Do you remember those good old Space Invaders games we all used to play in arcades not so long ago? Now you can relive those days with Reincarnation.

This frantic space shooter closely follows the "Kill 'em all" motto. There are no stages, just you and your spaceship in a vertically sliding setting, against endless waves of enemy ships which will constantly fall from the top part of the screen. This layout, the game's design, its pixelated graphics, its playability… it all reminds of those typical 80s titles.

That said, the truth is that Reincarnation is quite chaotic in every aspect: menus are hardly readable, the two available weapon types use the same key and what's more, the screen is so incredibly crammed with enemy spaceships and shots that it's virtually impossible to stay alive for more than five minutes. This unbelievable difficulty is what makes the game a bit disappointing, because you can't really enjoy for long.

Reincarnation is a nice try at getting old Space Invades style games, but the game is too chaotic and incredibly difficult.

Let's face here, if you're not fascinated by Space then there's something seriously wrong with your brain. In fact, I'm sure the vast majority of Earthlings would jump at the chance to zoom off into the outer reaches of the Universe. Now, thanks to the wonders of modern gaming technology you can now do just this on your home computer.

Of course, you won't really be in Space, but install Realms and you'll definitely feel like you are thanks to its rich, colourful graphics, slick animation and pumping musical soundtrack. The game can take a little while to load up if you have a slower processor, and you'll be presented with a series of retro tech-style load screens that seem to take forever to get through.

Once you're into the actual game though it seems like the whole of the Universe is there to be explored, and you can whizz off for miles in any direction of the screen. Steering your craft can take a little getting used to, especially if you try to turn and fire at the same time, as the movements of the ship are quite fluid and perhaps not as precise as they should be.

Nevertheless, Realms is a monster of a game, with scores of baddies to blast, missions to conquer and power-ups to collect. There are loads of options for changing the difficulty of the game by tweaking about with the number of asteroids, hardness of baddies, speed of the game, overall difficulty, etc.

If you want to create the impression of hurtling through the galaxy while you're sat on the sofa, then Realms makes for a great adventure.

No matter how much you like long, complicated videogames that suck up all your spare time, sometimes what you're looking for is a simple entertaining game just to have some fun.
Astro Avenger II is one of those easy, amusing videogames you can play for a while without the risk of getting hooked on them for days. Like those good old arcades you used to play a few years ago, this game puts you in control of a spaceship in a vertically scrolling area where the aim is basically to kill anything that dares move in front of you.

While Astro Avenger includes many traditional elements of classical space games (the aforementioned vertical scrolling, enemy waves, lots of power-ups) it also takes advantage of current technology, mainly regarding graphics and special effects such as lasers, explosions and the likes.

What I specially liked about Astro Avenger II was the possibility to buy new weapons, shields and bots – or upgrade the ones you already have – after completing each level. On the downside, some stages are so enemy-packed you can hardly tell enemies from the background scenario.

Astro Avenger II is the kind of game when you just need some simple, easy fun: an amusing space invaders clone with loads of explosions and power-ups.

If you miss the taste of good ol' arcade classics, this is the perfect opportunity to go back in time and enjoy a true space battle.

Kobo is a Windows remake of Xkobo, a popular space shooter for X11 systems. This modern version achieves to maintain the look and feel of old arcade space games, including waves of colorful enemies to defeat, loads of explosions and a fast-paced soundtrack. Plus, it features joystick support so if you have one, plug it to your PC and you'll really feel back in the eighties!

Kobo's aim is simple: kill whatever moves on your screen and don't let your spaceship get in touch with anything. Your mission consists on destroying enemy space bases by firing their weak points: some of them are really easy but some others require more shooting. In fact, the only difficulty I found was the spaceship's movement itself: instead of drifting along, your ship moves following a grid pattern (such as, for example, the snake game in mobile phones) which takes a while to get used to.

Kobo is an old-style arcade game that provides nostalgic fun, but requires some ability to control the spaceship's movement.

Alien Wars is like a trip back in time, to the years when we used to play endless space shooter games in bars and leisure centers. Now you can enjoy them again at home, in your own PC.

This frantic shooter follows the tradition of vertical scrolling games in which you have to kill anything that comes down the screen. Enemies will appear in separate waves, along with some asteroids and a big boss from time to time. Fortunately there is also some help in the shape of diverse bonus that provide you with more powerful weapons or a temporal protective shield.

Alien Wars includes a long list of levels, which means that you'll have fun for quite a while. On the downside, it also requires concentration and fast-responding reflexes, so be prepared for a few deaths before you get the knack of it.

Alien Wars brings back the excitement, fun and action of a good old space shooter.

This Space Invaders clone features seven different worlds to unlock and explore while trying to erase endless enemy waves from your screen. The ship is controlled with the mouse and you fire with the left button. In case you get tired of firing continuously, simply leave the button pressed.

B-Intruders includes many bonus elements that you can pick with your ship. Unfortunately we didn't have a clue on how to use them, because they didn't respond to any key and the game doesn't include any documentation either. In the end, the overall feeling is that the game is too repetitive and ends up being boring.

When I read that Gunroar was a space shooter set in the middle of the ocean, I imagined something completely different. My mind depicted a highly detailed sea and futuristic offshore racing boats. But Gunroar is nowhere near that. The game's graphics are so simple that they could be easily mistaken for the typical outer space setting in this kind of games.

However, this doesn't mean you can't enjoy the game. Gunroar features very quick, fun action in endless battles against waves of enemy boats and the usual boss from time to time. The game enables you to use different types of control, from which we strongly recommend the mouse plus cursor keys combinations as the less difficult one. Otherwise you'll be struggling with your keyboard while enemies massacre you.

Astrobatics is a fast-paced game that will delight fans of the space-shooter genre, and indeed adrenalin-seekers in general, and the sheer speed of the action is something that's impossible to get across in words. When it comes to gaming, addiction is what sells, and Astrobatics has this in abundance, as you fly through space at breakneck speeds blasting all manner of weird and wonderful enemies and traversing obstacles.

The excellent graphics and sound only add to the impact of the game. Although the initial levels start off fairly easily, they quickly become very challenging as the number of baddies flying at you increases to mind-boggling proportions. This can make the game a little frustrating but not quite enough to prevent you coming back for more. As you grow to learn the weaknesses of the end bosses, you should find you can go on to achieve greatness in Astrobatics.

As one of the first and most popular videogames of all time, Space Invaders is also one of the most copied. Atomers is a slick shooter that merges elements of Space Invaders with Galaga-style enemies. The story is a pretty standard one - save the planets by blasting aliens. But the main thing is that this is a simplistic game that will have you gripped for hours.

Like Space Invaders, you sit at the bottom of the screen as the alien ships shoot and swoop down on your from above. One of the cool things about Atomaders is that every time you shoot an enemy you'll get a different charging weapon type. Once you've collected four of these, you can reel off one shot to devastating effect. This, and the addition of mother ships and end-level bosses adds a little more interest to the standard Space Invaders gameplay.

Graphically, the game is very impressive, with gorgeous backgrounds, smooth animation and some rad explosion effects. With a kicking soundtrack and some great FX, this is a highly polished creation, compared with early Space Invaders games.

Warning Forever is an impressive arcade style shoot-em up which manages to stay challenging whilst not getting too boring. Your aim is to shoot down the enemy mothership which sails through the universe blowing-up everything in it's path. Once destroyed, you meet a bigger enemy on the next level and so-on until your ship is eventually destroyed.

As you progess level by level, the ship increases it's number of arms, it's speed and it's armour becomes stronger. Your main problem is cannonfire from the mothership although there are also obstacles such as meteors and planets to avoid. What you really notice with this game are the sound and visual effects which are really explosive for such a tiny game. However, once you've gone through 5 or 6 levels, it really get's a bit too hard and you'll have to spend a fair few hours on this to complete it. It's great for releasing stress anyway!

Turrican was a cult classic on the C64 and Amiga back in the day and now the program returns on the PC in this faithful recreation. The object is to navigate a space soldier through nine challenging levels, blowing away all manner of aggressive robots, attacking plants and avoiding dangerous traps along the way.

The game plays very well, allowing you to shoot updwards as well as horizontally. Anyone who's a fan of the original like me will be pleased with this recreation as the graphics and sound are very true to the Commadore classic, although there aren't that many new additions to enjoy.
