FIFA 08 - Become a football legend with the latest FIFA game

Everyone knows there are two types of gamer - those that love that Pro Evolution Soccer, and those that prefer FIFA. Until recently, I'd have told you that those in the latter camp are a bunch of idiots who don't know anything about either computer games or football. Since the last couple of releases of the EA game though, I've shocked myself by becoming increasingly impressed with FIFA (largely because it's becoming more like Pro Evo, I would argue). The ubiquitous update for the 2007-08 season is by far the best release to date and it seems that the game has finally come of age.

The gameplay is more fluid than ever and thanks to some tweaks to the shooting mechanism, defending pressure, player attributes and even the influence of air pressure, it's now a very realistic simulation of the beautiful game. The graphics are smooth, detailed and well animated and the commentary and crowd effects make it seem just like you're watching it on telly. FIFA has always had the benefit of licencing on its side and this year there are a staggering 620 teams from 30 leagues, and a total of more than 1,500 real players at your disposal.

The management mode from the previous version stays, and now EA has introduced a new feature that I've been wanting from a football game for a long time. The so-called "Be A Pro: Co-op Season" mode sees you create your own player profile, then play just as that player for the season in a team with your pals, or with others online. It's an interesting experience that gives you the opportunity to prove how good you really are at the game and develop your skills as an individual player.

With the usual slick presentation and infinitely customisable options, Pro Evo 2008 is really gonna have to go some in order to top FIFA 08.

FIFA 09 - The soccer classic strikes back

It's incredible to think it's been 15 years since the FIFA game dynasty began. FIFA 09 is a far cry from the blocky graphics and rigid gameplay of the original, 16-bit version. But, of course, the question is, how much better is this one than FIFA 08?

The answer, in short is: a little. The graphics in FIFA 09 have been refined, with more photo-realistic captures of the superstars of soccer, and some great new animations both on and off the ball. The presentation of the game is as exquisite as ever, with new match intro sequences featuring the players warming up in the tunnel, crowd chants specific to each club, not to mention the cool new 'widgets' system on the menu pages, where various online and offline stats are displayed at all times. Unfortunately, it was impossible to test the commentary in FIFA 09, as it's not included in this demo version.

In terms of its gameplay, FIFA 09 offers a smooth ride, although there are few changes to the way the game handles other than a few new tricks and the addition of more realistic collisions. I could've done without these clashes, as sometimes it takes your player a long time to get up after a heavy hit. In fact, one of the new gameplay enhancements in FIFA 09 is the physical presence of some players, which means large defenders are more likely to bundle you off the ball, requiring more cunning to get past them.

While this demo of FIFA 09 is limited to four-minute demo matches between a choice of six clubs, the full release looks set to really raise the bar in terms of its online modes. I'm particularly excited by the new Adidas Live Season mode, where player information is updated dynamically depending on performances in real life.

FIFA 09 is undoubtedly a great football sim, although unless you're particularly interested in the online aspect of the game, you may not see a great deal of benefit in upgrading from 08 (other than, of course, the updated transfers).

Whether it'll prove better than Pro Evolution 2009 is a matter of extensive debate, but FIFA 09 is definitely the best version in the EA series to date.

Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2009 - The popular console title is let down on PC by its controls

One of the traditions now associated with the coming of autumn is the release of two big football titles: FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. As any fan of gaming will know, these two games go head to head each year, with PES usually coming out on top. The latest edition, PES 2009, will be a huge seller on the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION®3 consoles but how does it perform on the PC, a format notoriously unsuited to sports games?

I'm not going to lie to you: the PES 2009 demo for PC isn't exactly revolutionary when it comes to the old problem of porting console titles to Windows. All the old problems are there but the horrendously clunky controls (caused by lack of analog sticks) are the biggest barrier to enjoying what would, on the correct platform, be an enjoyable and well-designed game.

Another weak point in the PES 2009 demo is the lack of any game options whatsoever. With no way of adjusting graphics, sound or controls, the demo has a very rigid feel to it. Sound controls in particular would be a welcome addition, if only they allowed you to turn off the awful music Konami has selected for the menu and intro pages, and the tinny, poorly rendered chants during the game.

After selecting Exhibition mode (the only option apart from Exit), you're offered a choice of four clubs (FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United) or two licensed national sides (France and Italy) to pit against each other. There follows the usual tactical options screen, a brief summary of the (insanely crappy) controls, and you're straight into the action.

The first thing we noticed about Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is that the graphics have been improved somewhat since last year's edition - player models are smoother and more natural than previously, even if getting the players to go where you want is just as hard as ever. Other improvements include the general AI of computer opponents and the physics of the game, though we're only really talking about minor tweaks here.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is, in the end, a slight improvement on last year's slightly disappointing release. On the PS3 and Xbox, it looks likely to lose this year's contest as FIFA 09 has improved so much. On PC, and especially without a gamepad, its controls are so clunky and inaccurate that it's as much of a waste of time as Civilization is on a console.

In all: PES 2009 is worth a try but not highly recommended on PC.

From the first whistle of the season to heartbreak of cup failure, FIFA 07 throws you into the rollercoaster ride of a football season, has your team got what it takes to win the league or will they bravely battle relegation - its all up to you.

Relish every scintillating victory over bitter rivals and fume through every gut-wrenching poor performance at home. Savour the spine-tingling stadium atmosphere, home and away, as your team battles their way up the league table. Listen as your supporters chant your players’ names and bellow all the rousing club songs through rain and shine.

You have the power to shape your club’s destiny in the EA SPORTS Interactive Leagues, a new online mode that enables you to pit your club against supporters of your real-world opponents. Play your games according to the real-world schedule. When they play, you play. Track your team’s progress as the aggregate results determine your club’s position in the league table. Now you actually take to the pitch for the glory of your club.

New intelligent AI ensures that your 11 men on the pitch make realistic decisions, finding space and passing like professionals. A complete overhaul of the game engine now means that you have to employ real world tactics, make realistic decisions and think like a player in order to win matches.

Take on the updated and improved challenge of the Manager Mode. Player values and wages have been tuned to be even more realistic. Managerial decisions have even more tangible effects on player performance and welfare. Smarter CPU decisions mean rival managers are even more strategic in their own pursuit of silverware.

There are two main kinds of football games: the ones where you actually play the match against your competitor, moving the team players across the field, and the ones where you play as the manager of the team.

Football Manager obviously falls in the latter, as you can tell from its name, and offers gamers a comprehensive simulators that covers every single aspect of football management, from hiring players to game tactics, including training schedule, salaries and of course, dealing with team supporters.

In fact, the game is so complete that it feels just too overwhelming when you run it for the first time. Also, the fact that the tutorial is broken doesn't help either. But after playing it for a while, you can tell that this game is going to get you hooked on your computer for hours. Just one tip: use your own background music because the game doesn't have any.

Football Manager 2008 enables you to make your dream come true and manage your favorite football team with highly realistic detail.

Pro Evolution Soccer 5 - Prepare yourself for the joy, the frustration, the tears

It goes without saying, but we love saying it anyway - Pro Evolution Soccer 5 (PES 5) makes the best even better. With the new licensed teams, new trademark moves, massively expanded Master League and variable weather conditions, PES 5 ensures that console football is even closer to the real thing.

The best part is, you don't even need to take our word for it...

Arsenal's Thierry Henry, and Chelsea's John Terry, will be staring out from the box when Pro Evolution Soccer 5 is launched, this autumn. The two men, both at the top of their game in the world famous Premiership, are die-hard fans of PES and proud to be involved.

We've all got so much to look forward to, starting with the retuned controls giving players more control over weighted passes, one-twos, and so on. This ties in neatly with the improved animation, which not only looks more realistic, but requires you to time kicks and shots perfectly for maximum power - you're more likely to scuff the ball and make weak, inaccurate shots if you attempt to play them while off balance or out of step.

The new licensed clubs are all meticulously detailed, including the authentic representation of names and numbers on their backs. You'll find the most famous players bear an astonishing resemblance to the real thing. Increased detail in all players has been transferred to the Player Design mode, which has been hugely expanded to include more factors determining skill and ability.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 - The latest installment of the football classic

The latest edition of the most popular football game ever is here - Pro Evolution Soccer (known in Japan and the Americas as Winning Eleven) is a football computer and video game series developed by Konami (KCET).

It is very popular in Europe, due to the realistic and playable gameplay. Partially as a result of EA Sports' affinity to purchasing exclusive rights for their FIFA series Pro Evolution Soccer games have traditionally lacked the sheer volume of licences present in EA's offerings, with the most notable absences being the FA Premier League, and more recently , the German Bundesliga (football).

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 promises to 'embrace the beautiful game' with more tricks and an overall more attacking mentality, with players encouraged to take people on. More licensed teams are included along with new boots, hairstyles and an improved Master League. More licenses are included, including fully licensed international kits with England, Spain and Italy to name a few (as well as the ever present Japan license). The French Ligue 1 Orange is now fully licensed plus more club licenses, including Manchester United, Olympiakos and Bayern Munich.

A Bundesliga licence was supposed to happen but Konami were forced to remove the Bundesliga licensing, which means the Bundesliga will not be present in PES6, not even as a series of unlicensed teams.

There are people who like to play soccer and people who like to focus more on the strategic side of it. If you're find yourself in the latter, here's a game you're going to enjoy a lot.

FIFA Manager 08 is EA's latest version of their successful soccer managing franchise. You'll be in charge of the soccer team of your choice, picked up from a huge list of professional soccer leagues. The game features an impressive level of detail, to such an extent that you end up feeling overwhelmed with information. As an example, FIFA Manager not only covers the professional side of your life as a soccer coach, but also enables you to create a personal profile with pictures of your kids.

In all, FIFA Manager 08 is probably one of the most complete soccer managers available, but on the downside, it can take a long time to learn how to play it and therefore, be able to enjoy it.

Football Challenge 2008 - Free 3D online football simulator

I'm not particularly fond of football but I must admit I had some fun while testing Football Challenge, a simple 3D online football simulator that you can play for free.

Be aware that this is no FIFA or PES. In fact football sim junkies may feel a bit disappointed at the game's simplicity in graphics and controls. Here you won't get the official player names or uniforms – in fact you can customize the team's shirt any way you want. What's more, there are no special moves or button combinations: the arrow keys and two action buttons (kick and pass) is all you need to play. On the other hand, this easy gameplay is what makes the game attractive even for people like me who don't know what an offside is.

Football Challenge includes both offline and online gaming modes. You can play against the computer and also enroll in online tournaments just by filling in a simple form and creating your team right away. The game will automatically find a match partner for you to start playing. Obviously, the more games you win, the higher you'll reach in the player ranking.

Football Challenge is a simple football simulator with support for online games, great for some easy fun but definitely not aimed at hardcore football fans.

EA just can't get enough, and apparently neither can the paying customers who continue to get excited and fork over their hard-earned cash for yet another Fifa Football title that promises to bring the realism and emotion of the World Cup to their living room. If there's one thing that EA has succeeded in achieving with the FIFA licence down the years, it's presenting glossy looking titles that take full advantage of its rights to use the true player names and all team strips, etc.

The intro and cut scenes are impressive and strike the perfect note to get you in the mood for some slick football. However, once you get down to the pitch you suddenly notice how jagged everything is when compared with the beautiful graphics that had you drooling in anticipation when you booted up the game. You decide that graphics aren't what make a game and get stuck in to the match proper. The speedy pace of play reassures you that this is a Fifa game worth having, but you quickly find that it gives you the same experience as the regular Fifa 06, and for that matter, 05. What's going on? Those rascals at EA have done it again. Taken their successful franchise, slapped on some new packaging and suckered us for our naivety.

Before you go out picketing however, there are some redeeming factors that should be considered. Firstly, at this stage EA must feel pretty much obligated to bring out a World Cup edition every four years if only to cater for the football-crazy fans that use it to commemorate each tournament. What's more, it lets the developer experiment with ideas that may just revolutionize future releases. For example, there is a new penalty-taking system in this version that accounts for players under pressure with the shot becoming slightly more difficult the longer you delay. There's also the new shooting engine, whereby holding the shoot button doesn’t adjust the power, but the trajectory of the shot. The power comes from the position the player is in as he takes the shot and whether he's moving, stationary, or under pressure from opposition defenders. These innovations really do make interesting changes and for most people will be an improvement on what came before.

As in previous World Cup releases, you can go back in time except this time to play classic moments from the history books such as the final half hour of England’s 1966 match against Germany with them trailing 1-0. Unfortunately you've got to do this with the present-day players and this takes away from the feeling of authenticity of the experience.

Fifa World Cup 06 does make a good souvenir to remember the championship by, but will probably only last as long as the tournament does, and in our opinion that doesn't justify buying it. On the other hand, if you haven't got a Fifa game from the previous two years, then this will provide you with enough spectacular goals and World Cup trivia to keep you occupied between matches.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 - The best soccer game just got better

Let me confess something before I start this review. In 2001 I played my first game of Pro Evolution Soccer (PES). It was against my friend Aaron and I won 1-0. Then I won 2-1, then he beat me 1-0 with a lucky goal so I won the next one 6-1. He didn't actually score, I gave him the goal on a piece of paper. Since then every year on Earth has meant a new and improved experience of watching Aaron's sad and aging face. So I like PES. I like it a lot.

There are two kinds of football gamers, those that want an authentic footballing experience, and people who play FIFA. PES won the hearts of the former with their first release, which managed to make you feel like you were playing a game of football that you could have been watching on television. They got so much right in that first game that subsequent releases have been bemoaned for their lack of 'big' developments. But we have had faster gameplay, more subtle ball control and some great set-piece changes. Now in 2008 we have 'Teamvision'.

'Teamvision' is the big news of the latest edition of PES and involves the computer's players owning a kind of 'artificial intelligence' that allows them to adapt and react to your gameplay. So much so that you now need to play in true Kenny Dalglish-style as a kind of player-manager with one eye on winning the match and one eye on making sure your tactics outwit your opponent's. Defenders and goalkeepers are more responsive to danger and attacking players make more intelligent runs off the ball, which is now a special blue PES leather number four if I'm not mistaken - it does seem rather small. Plus there are some nice manager and dug-out shots during the games and goalscorers celebrate with the subs. You also get extensive editing options if false names still annoy you.

The retail version comes out in November so get in some practice early. Then you can beat all your mates and rest happy for another year.

Fantasy Tennis - Cartoon style tennis game for all ages

Fantasy Tennis is a beautifully presented cartoon style tennis game that you'll have hours of fun with. You start by selecting a character to compete against players across the planet and then go on to win as much gold as possible in your quest to be world number one.

You're first taken through a tutorial that teaches you the secrets you'll need to master the game. It does not follow traditional tennis rules however. Games are won over one or two games instead of sets but even better, you can collect objects during the game which give you extra energy and power to win the game. The graphics and cartoon style animations are movements are absolutely first class and it's more like an arcade game than a real simulation.

The most fun is club mode where players can join together in clubs and play against other clubs at certain times. When the club is founded, other players can join depending on the club level. A level 1 club can have a maximum of 5 members and a level 4 club 20 members, etc.

This is a hugely enjoyable animated tennis game with a totally original premise. The only drawback is that there are only a handful of characters to choose from and if this were expanded or opened up to open source developers, it would be game, set and match.

Project Powder 1.32 - Free online snowboard simulator

Maybe summer is not the most appropriate season to practice snowboard, but Project Powder makes it possible – as long as you have a computer with you.

Project Powder is a frenetic snowboard simulator that challenges you to play and compete against people from all over the world, either individually in single races or teaming up with other players in group races. The game also features an extensive social components, including a lobby, chat rooms, instant messages and more.

Unlike other sport simulators, Project Powder is very easy to control. It features a complete tutorial that teaches you the basics of racing, plus a few nice jumps and tricks. Mastering them in order to reach the finishing line in the first place is another story. Also, keep an eye on penguins, rocks, snowplows and other obstacles! As you can see, races in Project Powder are definitely full of surprises.

Project Powder features surprisingly good graphics (at least for a free game), and that counts not only for landscapes and character design, but also for the physics engine, capable of rendering a truly speed sensation while sliding down the mountains.

Being an online game, Project Powder requires an internet connection at all times. But the main drawback, in my opinion, is the game's lengthy installation process.

Project Powder is a challenging, action-packed online snowboard simulator with which you can have fun with people from all over the world.
