Graph 4.2 - Draw mathematical graphs in a coordinate system

Graph is an open source application used to draw mathematical graphs in a coordinate system. Anyone who wants to draw graphs of functions will find this program useful. The program makes it very easy to visualize a function and paste it into another program. It is also possible to do some mathematical calculations on the functions.

Draw functions

Graph can draw normal functions, parameter functions, and polar functions. You can use a lot of built-in functions, e.g. sin, cos, log, etc. You may specify color, width and line style of the graphs, and the graphs may me limited to an interval. It is also possible to show a circle at the ends indicating open or closed interval.

Interact with other programs

You can save the coordinate system with graphs as an image on disk either as a bitmap (bmp), Potable Network Graphics (png) or metafile (emf). You may also copy the coordinate system into another program, e.g. Microsoft Word, either as a normal image or as an OLE object, which may be edited later by double clicking on it.

A lot of options

While still easy to use Graph has a lot of customization possibilities, e.g. fonts, colors, axes style, grids, etc. The axes, which may by normal or logarithmic, can be placed either by entering specific values, or by moving or zooming with the mouse.

Evaluate

Given an x-coordinate Graph will calculate the function value and the first two derivatives for any given function. Alternatively the function may be traced with the mouse. Graph can also fill a table with evaluated function coordinates in a user specified range. Data from the table can easily be copied into another program, e.g. Excel.

Calculate

Graph can help you calculate the area under a function in a given interval and the distance along the curve between two points on the function. The program can also show the first derivative of a function, and create tangents and normal lines to a function at given coordinates.

Point series and trendlines

You can create series of points with different markers, colors and size. Data for a point series can be imported from other programs, e.g. Microsoft Excel. It is possible to create a line of best fit from the data in a point series, either from one of the built-in models or from a user specified model.

Shadings and labels

Graph can insert shadings used to mark an area related to a function. Shadings may be created with different styles and colors in a user specified interval. In addition to the optional legend used to describe each function, a label may be added anywhere in the system. A label can contain text with different fonts, images and objects created in other programs.

Scratch 1.2 - Combine graphics, photos, music and sound into interactive creations

Scratch broadens the range of what you can design and create on the computer, making it easier to express your creativity. With Scratch, you can create characters that dance, sing and interact with one another, create images that whirl, spin, and animate in response to movements of the mouse, or integrate images with sound effects and music clips.

Scratch is a perfect tool for kids to learn the basics of computer programming, providing them with a tool that helps them explore their creative side by designing interactive birthday cards, short animated videoclips or interactive reports for school.

At the core of Scratch is a graphical programming language that lets you control the actions and interactions among different media. Coding in Scratch is much easier than in traditional programming languages: to create a script, you simply snap together graphical blocks, much like LEGO bricks or puzzle pieces.

Once you’ve created a Scratch project, you can share it on the Scratch website, the same way you might share videos on YouTube or photos on Flickr. Or you can embed your Scratch project in any other webpage – for example, embedding an interactive Scratch animation on your MySpace or Facebook homepage.

Stellarium 0.9.0 - See stars, planets and nebulae in realtime

Chances are that not very many people have heard of Stellarium although it is very similar to one of the most popular pieces of software available today – Google Earth. While Google’s software allows you to focus on the earth from a starting point in outer space, Stellarium reverses your perspective and places you at any point on the earth’s surface, staring up and out into deep space.

An interesting feature is that as time passes, the virtual star system will evolve, with the sun setting and the various constellations becoming more prominent in the dark night sky. You have a selection of visual effects that you can switch on or off such as the atmosphere, or trace lines for the star systems. Impressive stuff for a few minutes, but once you’ve got the general gist of what the software entails, you’ll quickly tire of zooming out to distant stars and watching as they slowly move across the screen.

While Google Earth brings you detailed photos of our planet’s surface, Stellarium can only achieve a much lower resolution representation of the solar system’s planets, without mentioning the fact that stars are limited to simple white dots zipping through the sky. With over 120,000 stars accurately plotted out in this virtual planetarium, it’s obvious that a lot of work has gone in to its creation. However, that excruciating level of detail is likely only to appeal to the real die-hard star gazers.

The idea behind Stellarium is a good one in theory, but when it comes down to it most people will see it as little more than a smart, interactive screensaver. That said, if you have an affinity for astronomy, would like to learn the constellations, or simply enjoy watching beautiful sunsets, then this is for you.

NASA World Wind 1.3.5 - The entire world is within your reach

NASA released World Wind six months before Google Earth, yet it failed to make as much of an impact. However, anything coming out of the prestigious American aeronautics administration is definitely worth a closer look. So what sets World Wind apart from Google Earth?

World Wind's real selling point is the quality of its satellite imagery. World Wind reveals Earth in many different perspectives thanks to the large variety of maps. Blue Marble exposes Earth in its true colors, Landsat 7 gives you high resolution imagery, and MODIS can display time relevant data such as earthquakes, fires or floods. Browse over mountains and observe the snowy peaks, the clouds, and the different colors of the rock, with incredible precision. Be aware though that the lower you go, the more detail will appear, and World Wind will take more time to process the image.

A digital globe wouldn't be complete without its own search option. Find a destination by typing its name in the search tool located on the top bar. Landmarks are particularly well catalogued. If you select the landmark finder tool from the top section, World Wind will exhibit small tags for all locations it considers of significance. Click on the tag and you will be directed to the Wikipedia page for that particular landmark, where you'll be able to read all about it. It is important to point out however that the search function in World Wind is not as good at finding cities as it is with landmarks.

Another of World Wind's assets is its usability. Zoom in over the map using the rollover button of your mouse and skim to parts of the screen with your mouse. The more you focus down on a place the more names of cities and significant locations pop up. These can clog up your screen however, so you'd be wise to configure World Wind to only show the information you need, like country borders and urban areas.

To set itself apart from Google Earth, World Wind provides two original tools. Capitalizing on its lunar explorations, the aeronautics administration lets you view the Moon in extremely high definition. Focus in on its craters, deserts and plains and search for Apollo 11's landing site. Additionally, World Wind recreates the infamous Oregon trail mapped out by American adventurers Lewis and Clark at the beginning of the 19th century, stretching out from Independece, Missouri to the Pacific state of Oregon. World Wind points to significant landmarks which should be of interest to students or history amateurs.

World Wind is as good a digital imagery program as Google Earth. While the image resolution process can be sluggish, World Wind manages to set itself apart thanks to its landmark finder and fun tools like the Moon visualizer and the Lewis & Clark trail.

Google Earth 4.3 Beta - Explore the globe

Google's satellite imagery software has truly changed the way we look at the globe. The application lets you zoom in on any part of the world and for some places, observe from a few meters away.

Google Earth not only displaces satellite images but it also includes terrains and sometimes 3D reconstruction of buildings. You can look for directions and businesses, just like in Google Maps and pinpoint areas or draw on maps straight in Google Earth.

Google Earth includes a very wide, and constantly increasing library of layers, which you can add to the map to enrich your experience. You'll find all sorts of information, from historical landscapes to national parks, regions where you can find endangered species or tourist spots. Google Earth will also showcase more news related information such as forest fires or tsunamis.

If stars is what you are into, turn to the Space mode and navigate among the constellations.

Moving around in Google Earth is incredibly intuitive thanks to the multiple navigation tools. Some areas will show less information than others, and Google Earth is known to use up a substantial amount of bandwidth, but it remains a fascinating piece of software

Google Earth is as of yet an unequalled application. Browse around the world, zoom into streets or go up and gaze at the stars. Millions of possibilities.

WebDicty is a free multilingual dictionary on the web. It has preconfigured a number of on-line Web dictionaries for Spanish, English, German, French, Italian, Catalan, Basque, Portuguese and Dutch including definition and translation dictionaries.

WebDicty does not have a list of words or a local dictionary. Instead, it relies on the freely available dictionaries on the web. Every time you type a word to look it up, WebDicty connects to the selected webpage, gets the answer, filters it an processes it so that is easy to read, removing embedded or pop-up ads. So it is basically a browser of preset pages (the dictionaries) with internal filters to remove the unwanted information. You can also open the actual webpage in your browser from within WebDicty by clicking on the browser button (the world icon).

April Fools Satellite Live 1.0 - See what's happening anywhere on Earth in real time

Have you ever wondered what life is like on the other side of the world, just on a normal day like today? Stop wondering: now you can see it.

Satellite Live is an impressive mapping application with which you can view satellite imagery from any location on the planet, traveling from one place to another with just a mouse click and zooming in and out at your will. In a way it works very much like the popular Google Earth but with a slight difference: Satellite Live offers live, real-time images.

The program uses former military technology that has now been released to civilians. Software developers have quickly taken advantage of it, producing a striking piece of software like you'll never have seen before.

You're able to watch people actually walking down the street, parking their cars, buying groceries from the market stall or going for a walk in the park. Obviously the program only shows images from public and open areas so forget about peeking into somebody's bathroom to witness private stuff. Nevertheless, Satellite Live features an extraordinary zoom level with which you won't miss a single thing.

The program includes also a locating feature (which finds any place on Earth in a matter of seconds), an embedded screen capturing tool and navigational buttons to move around maps. However, there's no support for extra information layers yet.

Bear in mind that the level of detail may vary from one place to another, which means that populated areas such as New York, Los Angeles, London or Tokyo have more image quality than the Nevada desert or the Amazon jungle. In any case, Satellite Live is still an incredible application that opens a window to the world from your own computer.

Satellite Live lets you witness what's going on in any location on the planet, in real time. Though the level of detail may vary, it's still an impressive app with which to learn how life is in other parts of the world.

WordWeb 5.5 - Free English thesaurus and dictionary

If you write many articles, you probably know what a pain it is to have to regularly skim through a heavy dictionary to find the word you’re looking for. Luckily there’s a whole batch of lexicon applications that’ll send it back to the shelf (or in the trash can) forever. WordWeb is the perfect example of this type of dictionary and thesaurus combo in a hands-on interface.

What you’re looking for in a dictionary application is something you can open in a click, paste your word, and immediately get the results. You get that in Wordweb via system tray integration, and a Ctrl+Alt+W hot key combination. On install WordWeb will ask you the English locale you will use, such as Australian, Canadian American or New Zealander. The program keeps a history of your searches and you can quickly access them via the side arrows. You can refine your search by selecting word category like nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and decide to show pronunciation, usage and offensive or vulgar words. WordWeb isn’t associated to any world famous reliable dictionary like Webster’s ,preferring its very own online source, comprising of more than 240,000 words and updated regularly, according to the developer.

The heart of WordWeb resides in the results tabs, although the difference between them all wasn’t obvious from the start. After a bit of testing we found that the “nearest” tab showed you the preceding and following words in the dictionary, “see also” was a suggestion of related words and “similar” presented a word that resembled your search but had a slightly different meaning. “Types” goes down to the meaning of the word, for example solid “types” will be plastic, crystal or block. The “type of” tab is another variation. “Types of” solid will be substance, state or form. These tools will be particularly helpful if you feel limited by your vocabulary and are looking to diversify your choice of words in the document you are writing.

WordWeb is a reliable dictionary and thesaurus with a simple, hands-on approach. It is an ideal partner to fight off writer’s block and improve your vocabulary. The online dictionary is a rich source and WordWeb should help you out of any mind jam whenever you’re writing an article.

Concept maps are a great way to organize projects, distribute tasks or even illustrate a term paper with a colourful explanatory chart. And now, with CMapTools, they're easier than ever to create.

This application helps you to design any type of relational charts, concept maps and other types of diagrams. It works in a very intuitive way: double click on the screen to create a new element and right-click on it to customize its appearance.

CMapTools exports charts to a variety of formats (XMl, PDF, HTML...) and also enables to share them on the Internet, although we found the connection to CMap servers a bit slow.

Moonphase 3.1 - See the current moon phase anytime, anywhere

Staring at the moon has something romantic about it, doesn't it? But I'm not sure if staring at this virtual moon produces the same effect.

Moonphase is an astronomic tool that tells you exactly what the moon phase is at this very moment – or on any day you choose from the program's embedded calendar. It works with any location on Earth, which you can select by entering the correspondent latitude and longitude numbers or simply by clicking on the map (much easier, huh?).

Besides displaying the moon phase and using attractive animations to switch from one phase to the other when you change date or location, the program doesn't really offer much more: no configuration settings, no location search box. Well, at least you get the sunrise and sunset times as a free extra.

Moonphase is a simple astronomy tool especially developed for those of you who feel a special attraction towards our satellite.

Virtual Lab 6.2.2 - Discover the micro world with this virtual microscope

I was always fascinated by the science laboratory hours at school, when we had to use microscopes to literally discover new words, and test chemical compounds and the ways they react with eachother. I also remember how cool mercury was and how our incautious teacher had let us played with our hands in it, despite its toxicity. If you want to discover more about the micro-universe but you don't want to have the hassle of slides, drops of blood or samples of skins, give VirtualLab a try.

This application is funded by NASA and it is a digital microscope with many specimens you can easily download from the main page. You don't have to install anything, just click the thumbnail that attracts you most and the program take care of downloading it and make it available for you. Among the specimens available there are human blood cells, penicillin, pyrite, meteorite, lunar dust, yeast, dog liver and human kidney samples. Be careful though as some of the files are really big, more than 150MB and it will take ages to download them. This is because the images are really detailed and you can zoom in more than 150,000X. For some images then, you can also select a portion and have a 3D rendering in another window.

Looking at the downsides I found the technique you have to use to navigate through pictures pretty unusual, and I didn't like the fixed zoom. In fact, it is not possible to zoom in freely on an image, as there are just four fixed zoom levels you can choose from.

VirtualLab is a fascinating program with which you can efficiently discover the micro world thanks to 84 high-definitions. It's a pity there are some usability issues.

The Carbon Footprint Calculator 1.0 - Learn to calculate your CO2

We all are worried about climate change and whether this is linked to the pollution we produce. People are now more sensitive about how many carbon emissions their lifestyle produces. It is difficult though to have an idea about how green our choices are and what we can allow ourselves per year in terms of air travel, for example.

With The Carbon Footprint Calculator you can actually calculate your impact on the environment. You can roughly insert the total distance you drive and you travel by air, bus or train in one year. Swap between the metric and the English unit measurement system if you prefer. In the Energy Section you can specify the Electricity, the natural gas and the fuel oil used monthly, together with the State (US) where you live and the number of people who live with you. Then comes the recycling and activities section where you have to select the type of recreation you do, the buying habits and the percentage of trash you recycle. Finally, you will have to specify the percentage of food or items you buy that are grown or produced locally. I found it difficult to quantify the amount of food I eat each day in Kg. I've never thought about it and I was astonished to know that we eat between 25 to 75kg per day.

A detailed Footprint Result is shown after pressing the black footprint icon on top of the main form. It shows the amount of Co2 we produce in a coloured cake chart. You can compare it with the information provided underneath it, in which it states the average emission per person in US, which is about 20tons of Co2 per year, while the for EU citizens it's around 11 tons. Whether your personalised results will make you feel a bit guilty or proud of your lifestyle, remember you can always offset the emission you produce by supporting specific schemes. A selection of those, found on the Tufts Climate Initiative web site is: Carbonfund, The CarbonNeutral Company, Cleanairpass, Climate Care, Solar Electric Light Fund and TerraPass.

This basic application allows you to keep a track of your energy consumption and calculate your carbon emissions. Unfortunately, it doesn't allow you to create graphs comparing the results of different years and it doesn't give you any advice on how you can have a greener lifestyle based on your lifestyle.

Argumentative 0.5.43 - Make decisions clearer with argument maps

Wouldn't it be useful to have a visual map of your thoughts, stating clearly what can support your view or what could instead be raised against it. Argumentative will let you built clear charts with thesis and counter thesis so that you can prepare your speech or develop ideas in a more effective way.

The application makes use of colours to clarify the diagram. Reasons are written in a green panel, objections in red one while the elements in support of both are displayed in a blue box. At any time you can add reasons, helpers or objections to make your graph as comprehensive as possible. Finally, you can export it into Word, Power Point or transform it into other formats using an XSLT style sheet of your choice.

Argumentative's concept is interesting and useful, but the way to design your thought diagram is not that usable. I wouldn't say it is difficult, but surely nowadays we have reached some standard for icons in order to move, add or remove things. I don't find it particularly quick, as one has to go into the edit menu, and then select the adding option just to insert a new panel. It's not really difficult but it would have made things much easier if there were an icon for these functions on the main bar.

Despite a raw design which slows the creation process, this free program can help you organize your ideas, thoughts and presentations thanks to its clear way of displaying arguments and objections.
