It's quite incredible how quickly Sudoku has become one of the most popular puzzle games on the planet. It seems that whenever you get on a bus, train or plane, you're guaranteed to see at least one person gazing at a block of numbers looking quizzical with a pen in their mouth.

The problem I have with Sudoku is that I find it gets very repetitive very quickly and I often end up putting down my puzzle book after just a couple of games. Skinz Sudoku breathes new life into the format of the game, with innovative gameplay that will keep you glued to your PC screen.

Like a normal game of Sudoku, you must fill the board with numbers from one to nine without repeating them in the same row, column or square. However, Skinz Sudoku offers four different ways of playing to add a little diversity to the proceedings.

The first is 'Wheel', where you pick a number from a number wheel that appears around the tile you selected. Then there's 'Square' which is essentially the same thing only with a simpler layout. 'Bar' is particularly interesting, as you first select the number you want to plot before touching the grid to put it anywhere. The final one is 'Writing' where you simply type in the number you want to include.

The game allows for the creation of new boards, the ability to change the appearance of the environment, save and load games, all without using the pointer. Though the game offers some fun ways of inputting numbers, the puzzle itself is essentially still the same, so if you're not into Sudoku then don't bother.

However, if you're an affectionado then Skinz Sudoku will add a more more variety to the way you play the game.

Sudokus have become one of the most popular pastimes in the last few years, not only on newspapers and magazines, but also as casual computer games.

SudokuWorld is one of those sudoku computer games you can play without pen and paper. This version is supposed to have about 100,000 puzzles (though I obviously didn't count them all), classified into three different categories according to their level of difficulty.

The game features a generously sized interface which makes it easier to play. I specially liked the ability to add the so called "pencil notes" (small, temporal numbers you're not sure of yet) and also the possibility to ask for a hint. On the downside, I was surprised to see I couldn't play with the keyboard's num pad, but only with the top number row, which is not that comfortable.

SudokuWorld will keep you entertained for a while with 100,000 puzzles in different difficulty levels. And if you get stuck, don't be ashamed of asking for a hint!

Sonic 3D Blast is a faithful emulation of the original Sega game. You will of course remember Sonic, the cool blue porcupine, who has to run around in a 3D world to collect rings, kill robots by jumping over their heads and, most important of all, gathering up the furry animals you meet during the game to free them.

When you have collected five of them, you’ll need to run in the big teleport ring, which will bring you to the next level, of which there are fourteen. As you proceed through the game you might also encounter Knuckles and Tails, the other two well-known characters of the story, which will bring you to bonus stage for extra ring-points.

Although it’s a classic game, it will take you a while to get use to the 3D movements if you are used to play to the 2D version. The playability is good, and it’s a good game for passing some time, whose 3D fluidity reminds you of Marble Madness.

If you were a fan of Sonic, it’s worth trying this 3D adventure, which, although isn’t exactly cutting-edge, is still an entertaining game which will help you roll back the years.

Wordzap is a fun word game that you can play via friends on the internet or against the PC. The aim is simple - create 7 words from the the letters that are dealt to you before your opponent does.

Playing against the PC is interesting because as you get better, the computer does too and it appears the game uses some type of Artificial Intelligence to keep up with you. The good thing about this is that before long, you've got an opponent who really gives you a run for your money. WordZap features three levels of vocabulary and four different types of game style (EasyZap, WordZap, LongZap and HardZap) which all differ slightly in points system and the way you have to form words. To play over the Internet, you need only know the IP address of your opponent. The game is available in several languages too so it's a good tool if your trying to learn another language apart from English.

Fun, fast paced and easy to play against a friend, this is a solid alternative to playing scrabble.

Pinch Ol' Santa 2 is a good example of an easy Christmas-themed time waster, perfect for a short break during work.

The story and gameplay are really simple: it's Christmas Eve and the whole world is looking forward to the arrival of Santa and his present-loaded sledge. But what if you could get more gifts that you actually deserve? Try pinching poor Santa while he's delivering packages around the city's roofs and see how many you can make him drop.

Despite the simple plot, the game can get quite difficult, especially with those small-sized, fast-paced Santas that appear in the background. Also, bear in mind that you can pinch Christmas lights for extra score.

On the downside, I found music to be a pain, but this may be due to the fact that I personally don't like Christmas carols at all. Also, the game ends up getting repetitive too soon.

Pinch Ol' Santa 2 is a funny seasonal time waster that soon gets boring due to the absence of new levels and challenges.

Sudoku Sensei is not just the traditional digital sudoku that allows you to play this popular pastime in your computer. It's also a complete sudoku suite that can create many new sudoku puzzles and what's more important, help you solve them.

In reality this game is quite disappointing. There seems to be very little difference between all the levels other than the studio upgrading it's technological features and furniture. In addition, it's just simply too easy. You'll find yourself rolling in cash so that upgrading to the next level just becomes ridiculously easy.

A great idea but shame the game never lived up to expectations.
