The Sunbird Project is a redesign of the Mozilla Calendar component. The goal is to produce a cross platform standalone calendar application based on Mozilla's XUL user interface language. Sunbird is the standalone form of the Mozilla Calendar. Both use the same base code so their functionality is the same and they share the same bugs and bug fixes. The intended user is someone who uses Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird and wants a calendar application based on Mozilla.

Rainlendar 2.4 - Handy free calendar for your desktop

Rainlendar is a lightweight and customizable calendar for your desktop.

When I first launched Rainlendar I was impressed by the widget-like appearance. Widget are small, handy gadgets that can pop up on your screen to show you all types of information, from weather forecasts, to stock charts or the time and date. They are usually small, attractive and very discreetly fit on your desktop. Rainlendar’s elements similarly have that cloud-like feel. The notes, events and calendar windows float around on your desktop and can be moved about your screen and disappear or reappear in a touch.

Rainlendar stands out from classic calendar programs thanks to a highly customizable interface and the possibility to quickly and effortlessly jot down notes and important events. Although it only comes with two different skins, the program offers a link to www.customize.org, where you should find the style which suits your tastes. But Rainlendar doesn’t stop there. You can set up hotkeys to manage Rainlendar at the push of a key and, thanks to various plug-ins present in the program, integrate Rainlendar directly to other utilities like Outlook and iCalendar. Rainlendar is always within reach as a tray icon on your desktop and bringing it up just takes a click of your mouse.

Unfortunately Rainlendar’s real originality is also its weakness. The program offers a wide range of skins but adding these to the program is far from straightforward. You have to drag your downloaded skin into the Skins folder for the Rainlendar program file and then browse to the new skin from the ‘Edit Skin’ option in Rainlendar’s drop down menu.

If you like to keep your calendar on your PC, but find the one offered by Windows too dull, Rainlendar is a good alternative. You’ll enjoy setting your own style and the way it discreetly fits onto your desktop.

Chinese Calendrics 8.91 - Discover the Chinese solar and lunar calendars

Chinese Calendrics is a tool for the study of the Chinese Calendar. The Chinese Lunar Calendar is not only a lunar calendar but also a solilunar calendar (what some call a 'lunisolar' calendar), consisting of months corresponding exactly to lunar cycles and years which stay more-or-less in sync with seasonal years. Implicit in the construction of this calendar is a separate solar calendar, less well-known.

Both calendars depend on the times of certain astronomical events, principally dark moons and winter solstices. For at least several centuries (according to some scholars, since the 5th C. BCE) the times of these events have been ascertained not by observation but rather by calculation, so these calendars can be classified rule-based.

The calendar has the following uses:

Convert between dates in the Chinese solar and lunar calendars and dates in the Common Era and Julian calendars

Calculate the date of New Year's Day in the Chinese lunar calendar

Ascertain the Western dates of the starts of all of the lunar months in a year in the lunar calendar

Find leap months in the lunar calendar

Find the Western dates corresponding to Chinese anniversaries, such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries

Move forward or backward from a given date (and time) either by a period such as a month (Western or Chinese) or by any number of days

Calculate the phase of the Moon for any time within a 6000-year period

Search for the next or previous full moon, dark moon, lunar quarter, solar term or solstice or equinox of a certain type

Search for a solstice or an equinox in combination with a dark moom or a full moon

Search for the next or previous day, month or year with a certain element-animal correspondence (e.g., the next water-rabbit year or the next fire-chicken day)

Find days for which the element-animal is the same for day, month and year

Study the effect of changes in the prime meridian (120 degrees East, 116, 109, etc.) on the calendar

Active Desktop Calendar 7.48 - Customizable PIM on your desktop wallpaper

One thing that Windows lacks is decent calendar. Active Desktop Calendar is a fully customizable calendar which features notes, tasks, alarms, and merges neatly into whatever desktop wallpaper you have.

One of the best features about this calendar is that it allows you to share dates and data with others on your network. It also integrates with Outlook so that your appointments and tasks are displayed clearly on your desktop. You can even make it synchronize with your PDA via Outlook.

The calendar is fairly customisable. There are several options for changing calendar icons, fonts and colors, marking weekdays of choice and marking dates with notes and/or alarms. If you find the calendar is running slowly or slowing your system down, you can also revert to a text only version of the calendar. If you need hard copies of your important dates, there's also a very easy to use print option for calendar data. Although it's not necessary, there's also a world clock screen saver that shows your computer's system time, plus five major time zones around the world.

All in all, this is an excellent calendar although it's going to find it hard with things such as Google Calendar which are accessible from anywhere.

OggSync 3.22 - Synchronise Outlook with Google Calendar

If you constantly work between Outlook and Google Calendar, then this is an excellent plugin that enables you to combine the best of both worlds.

Of course, Outlook has features that Google Calendar doesn't and vice versa so this program truly allows you to combine both to get the best out of them. OggSync is a simple utility that synchronizes appointments, events, tasks, alarms and much more. Whether the two products synchronise successfully depends largely upon whether you get the configuration right which can take a few attempts - it requires a little bit of a trial and error approach. One particularly big benefit of this program is that it extends many of the best features of Google Calendar to Outlook. For example, in Google Calendar I have different calendars for different areas of my life - work events, family events and leisure. Normally, Outlook doesn't allow you to do this but by using OgSynch, it brings a whole new wealth of features to Outlook, including the ability to separate events in this way and even to Windows Mobile devices.

A truly useful utility for those that spend way too much time between two calendars and need to simplify the way they organise their lives.

Lightning 0.8 - Add a complete calendar to Thunderbird

The one thing that most Thunderbird users miss is a complete and integrated calendar - well your wait is over if so.

Lightning has been timed to coincide with Sunbird and readily integrated into Thunderbird complete with organizer, task list, reminders, alerts and calendars. The look, feel and functionality are undoubtedly similar to Microsoft Outlook and likewise, you can add events and invite others to important meetings and events. However, for my money, the developers here have followed Google a little too closely. It feels very much like Google Calendar in use although admittedly, it's got more advanced scheduling and event detail options. Of course, Mozilla have taken much of Sunbird - their standalone calendar - and placed it in Lightening so if you're a Sunbird user, you'll find Lightening very easy to learn and pickup. The good thing is that Lightening is much lighter on your memory and of course, integrated perfectly into your e-mail so you don't have to operate two separate applications.

Sunbird, Google Calendar and Outlook users will find no major innovations in Lightening but it does bring a much needed add-on to Thunderbird.

ReminderCube is a simple personal agenda that includes the most common productivity tools for your daily work at the office: a calendar, a task list, a reminder app, a program launcher and even a mini-reader for your favorite RSS feeds.

All these tools are displayed in separate windows which you can show or hide at will. In this way you can leave opened only those that you really use. However, it seems that the program doesn't keep this configuration and shows all of them again when you restart it.

Regarding appearance, the interface looks a bit clunky despite the author's efforts to make it attractive by using skins, themes and gradients.

Calendar Magic 16.9 - Calendars pack with lots of utilities

Calendar Magic is an easy-to-use pack of calendar utilities that is entertaining, informative, educational, and of equal applicability in the home and in the office.

It supports the following calendars: Full year and individual month Gregorian, Afghan, Armenian, Baha'i, Bangla, Chinese, Coptic, Egyptian, Ethiopic, French Revolutionary, Hebrew, Hindu Lunisolar (3 variants), Hindu Solar, Indian National, Islamic Civil, Julian, Revised Julian, Parsi Fasli, Parsi Kadmi, Parsi Shenshai, Persian (2 variants), Sikh Nanakshahi and Vietnamese calendars. A user option is provided to choose between displaying/printing calendars showing each week starting on a Monday (in line with the ISO 8601 international standard), on a Sunday for North American users, or on a Saturday for Middle East users.

It supports a month-by-month, side-by-side comparison of any two of the 23 calendar systems listed above. The display remains synchronised as you change day, month and year values in either calendar system being viewed. Again, users may choose between displaying each month with weeks starting on a Saturday, Sunday or Monday.

It supports date conversions among the 23 calendar systems listed above, plus conversions to Balinese Pawukon, Thai solar, old Hindu Solar, old Hindu Lunisolar and Mayan date formats. Julian day value, day of week and day of year information is also displayed. For Gregorian dates, many other facts are displayed, such as modified Julian day value, Lilian day value and Rata Die day value, and year related information including Roman numeral form, Dominical Letter(s), Dionysian Period, Julian Period, Golden Number, Solar Number, Roman Indiction and Epact. Various special days are also recognised (e.g. Halloween), as are modern Olympic years, Commonwealth Games years, European Athletics Championship years, and World Athletic Championship years.

It includes lists of Western Christian festivals, Eastern Orthodox festivals, Hebrew festivals and Islamic festivals for any (Gregorian) year. In addition, Hindu festivals may be listed for any year in the range 2000 to 2043, Baha'i festivals from 1845 onwards, Buddhist and Chinese festivals from 1645 to 3000, and Sikh Nanakshahi festivals from 1999 onwards.

It has the ability to create, display, update and delete reminders for events (birthdays, anniversaries, meetings etc.) for "this year", "next year" or "every year". When Calendar Magic is started up, both visual and audible warnings are given for "imminent" events (those occurring within the next seven days) for which reminders have been set. In addition, a calendar for any month, in this year or next year, may be displayed with day numbers highlighted in red for those days in the month for which reminders have been set. Left-clicking on any "red day" will cause the reminder(s) set for that day to be listed.

MonoCalendar 0.7.2 - Free. useful calendar for tasks and events

MonoCalendar is an application designed for easy management of multiple calendars. The idea was to try to make a program like iCal for Windows.

MonoCalendar does not try to be a iCal substitute. If iCal existed for Windows, we would recommend using that before MonoCalendar. On the other hand, since it currently does not exist for many systems, it is an alternative to consider, and furthermore it is an alternative that is free.

This is what MonoCalendar has to offer:

Create any number of calendar defined groups

Ability to see five or seven days in a week

control the number of hours to show

support for .ics calendars
