Lavirinto3D 0.6.0 - An attempt to reproduce Zenji on the Atari800XL

Lavirinto3D is a version of the classic block building game genre inspired by Zenji on the Atari800XL.

The rules are very simple - using a ball you must link up a whole maze of pipes making sure to correctly fit the right pipes with the right connections. The problem is that some of them quite literally eat-up other sections just as you're about to connect them so it's not quite as straightforward as it sounds. There are tutorials to take you through the first few levels however with each being more elaborate than the last.

The biggest drawback from the start is both the level of difficulty and the graphics. It wouldn't have taken much more effort to have added more challenging first few levels and the same goes for beefing up the graphics which to say it's supposed to be a 3D game, don't really jump out at you. The general feeling after only a few levels, is one of boredom and this is one game that really needs some more challenges thrown in to make you keep coming back to it.

Lavirinto3D will only really appeal to fans of the original Zenji game on the Atari800XL unless you really like your puzzle games simple and unchallenging.

Pozzo - Jello Crusade - Clean up the rotten jellos before the health inspector arrives

If there were awards for weird originality, then Pozzo - Jello Crusade, would surely win. In this game, you play the role of a janitor named Pozzo who works for a jello restaurant.

His dream is to save enough money to escape the hell he finds himself in but unfortunately his manager has found out that the local health inspector is dropping by for an unscheduled check. Your task is to clean up the entire premises of rotten jellos but here's the catch - Pozzo has no limbs and can't help eating all the jello he finds (I told you it was weird).

Pozzo cannot retrace his steps once he has eaten jellos off a tile which is about the only little "challenge" that the game seems to offer. However, the levels are quite imaginative even if the graphics certainly are not. New blocks and tiles appear from time to time which attempt to block Pozzo's way. In later levels, you have to be much more careful about the routes you take as the pitfalls grow deeper.

Poor graphics and a dodgy soundtrack combined with a bizarre concept make Pozzo - Jello Crusade one of the more unusual and less satisfying puzzle games out there.

mGomoku - A classic Japanese "Connect 4" style puzzle

If you've never heard of it, then Gomoku is a classic Japanese puzzle game also known as Five-Stones, Five-In-Row, Five-In-Line, Tic-Tac-Toe, Make-Five, Renju, Gobang and Piškvorky.

The rules are simple - to win you must have a continuous line of five stones of the same color. Like in Connect 4 - the The line can be either vertical, horizontal or diagonal except there's 5 instead of 4 of course! You can select between wither the devil or an angel as your player of choice and can choose one of three strategies and 5 possible levels.

mGomoku features some very colorful graphics, some natty visual effects plus the sound effects aren't bad either. You can choose your level of difficulty although the higher levels are virtually impossible to master. It would have been nice if you could have a two player mode too but as it is, you'll just have to settle for playing against your PC.

mGomoku isn't the most original puzzle out there but it delivers more than a fair few hours of entertainment.

Axiebal 7 - Puzzles and balls combine in this platform game

What do you get if you mix balls, puzzles and action and add your own level editor in their for good measure?

The answer is Axiebal 7 which sees you control a ball through a valley of torment and even allows you to design your own levels. Axiebal 7 works on a top-down view and scrolling levels to give you the feel of a hand held console game. Your aim is basically to guide the ball through several death defying levels while avoiding all kinds of obstacles and dangers that lie in your way.

On your way, you must collect flags until you reach your base again. However, the biggest danger you'll face is falling off a cliff so steering your ball to reach the craftily placed flags is not as easy as it may sound. There are also solid walls that stand in your way but you can blow them up with bombs to find your way home. Best of all however is the Axiebal 7 level editor which gives you the option to create your own challenges and courses when the default levels become too boring.

For a free fun game, Axiebal 7 is a decent time waster and offers a nice combination of action and puzzles.

Pipe Mania - The classic tube puzzle springs a leak!

If you've ever had problems finding a decent plumber then you'll definitely identify with Alfonso Junior and Sister Fawcett in Pipe Mania.

Pipe Mania is a race against time to save their paradise island which has been taken over by cowboy plumbers. It's a fast paced puzzle game that challenges you over a staggering 300 levels which you can't help could have been reduced significantly and the developers could have just increased the difficulty level.

There are however 5 game modes to choose from which add to the challenge or fun a little bit which are world, arcade, bonus, versus and an updated classic pipe mania game. The one drawback is that the game does rely on DirectX which sometimes results in slowdowns and even crashes if you are unlucky.

Pipe Mania is not the greatest game you'll ever play but it brings together puzzle and arcade action to provide a decent level of fun.

Isanaki 2.2a - Sudoku for the hardcore puzzle fan

Isanaki may only have six levels but it will surely be one of the hardest Sudoku games you've ever played.

The rules of the game are classic Sudoku. The aim is to fill the board so that each number appears only once in any row, column and block. However, Isanaki extends itself to 9x9 and 16x16 Sudoku boards, which can be extremely tough. The good thing is, if you simply can't work it out Isanaki will do it for you.

Isanaki also uses Wordoku boards which, while Sudoku boards contain only numbers from one to nine (and letters from A to G for 16x16 boards), Wordoku boards contain only letters. You don't really expect much in graphics from a Sudoku game although you can't help feeling the developers could have made a little more effort in this department. However, it's the intelligence and challenge of Isanaki that impresses - if you can handle this, you can handle any Sudoku variation.

Isanaki is only for those Sudoku (or Wordoku) players that really want to stretch themselves to new puzzle solving limits.

Parking Dash - The stress of finding a parking space turned into fun

Trying to find a parking space is not fun - and it hardly makes for a great game, although Parking Dash makes an ambitious bid to do so.

Parking Dash sees you as a valet who has to park and return your customers' cars in the quickest time possible. You have two gameplay modes to choose from - Story (which follows some kind of bizarre "parking plot") and Endless shift which is a relentless barrage of customers waiting for you to collect and retrieve their cars.

There are 50 levels to make it through although the variation between each one is negligible. The big difference seems to be quite simply the speed at which you have to act. You can however improve your parking lot to make more money and attract more customers but this amounts to the rather unexciting prospect of adding donut vending machines or installing lifts into the car park.

Parking Dash features good graphics and sound but it's not the most inspiring game you'll ever play.

Ratmania 1.3 - Help a rat find the way out of the maze

When I first saw Ratmania I though it would be something similar to Ratatouille, the videogame based on the Pixar movie. Unfortunately I must say the game fell short of my expectations.

Ratmania is quite an original puzzle game in which you're a rat. Yes, it's as creepy and nasty as it sounds. As a rat, you have to go through a series of labyrinths, following a specific route to the exit in the shortest time possible. The faster you are, the higher score Ratmania awards you.

The problem with Ratmania is that it all feels a bit too slow. The actual game takes ages to start, only after a long list of sponsors and a cinematic intro – a highly detailed, quite impressive one to say the truth. When playing, the rat moves too slow and you tend to desperately press the "run forward" key in hope that it'll make the animal run faster. Well, at least there are quite a few power-ups and bonus items to make each level in Ratmania a bit more exciting.

As for graphics, they're pretty elaborate – especially when you take into account that Ratmania is a project made by students – but not brilliant. In any case they're better than the perspective, which is a bit hard to judge and sometimes makes you lose sight of your way.

Ratmania is certainly not a Pixar game, but we appreciate the originality of the plot and the decent graphic work.

LinkLines 1.4.3 - Simple remake of the classic Tetris puzzler

If you liked Tetris then you'll probably enjoy LinkLines which is a classic remake of the Tetris arcade puzzle game.

The aim of LinkLines is simple - link five balls of the same colour to form a line in any direction. The ultimate objective of LinkLines is to stop lines on the board from filling up too quickly otherwise you've failed. The graphics in LinkLines are nothing special but it's the playability that keeps you hooked for a while. At first, it seems an impossible task to move and link blocks in LinkLines but as you get used to it, it becomes quite fun.

There's nothing fancy about LinkLines - no bonuses or obstacles to avoid but there are different levels which mainly differ in the awkwardness of sticking them together. The time it gives you to fit the blocks is very generous however and makes the game a little bit too easy in general. If there was some way of speeding them up, it would give the game's playability much more longevity.

Easy to play and challenging for a while, LinkLines will provide a certain level of fun although it's appeal may wear off a bit too quickly.

Fishdom 1.0 - A fish puzzle game with screensaver

If you like puzzle games and fish tank screensavers, why not have both of them on your PC? Now it's very easy with Fishdom.

Fishdom is a colorful, addictive puzzle set under water, as if it was right inside a fish tank. Your aim is to arrange similar pieces in groups of at least three by swapping them with each other, so that they disappear from the screen. When all the golden-boxed pieces on the Fishdom interface are gone, the level is complete and you're given money as a reward.

The most original characteristic of Fishdom is that it's not limited to being a game. Pause the game at any time and you'll be able to use it also as a cute screensaver for your PC, making your monitor look like a relaxing yet lively fish tank.

The Fishdom screensaver is easily customizable with fish, plants and other decorations that you can buy in the game's shop with the money you earn by playing the game. However, you'll need to be patient because getting a really beautiful fish tank will take a while!

Fishdom is a very original and surprisingly addictive game which can also be used as a decorative fish tank screensaver.

Circular Level Reloaded 1.00 - Challenging puzzle game with a psychedelic style

I have to admit I love logic puzzles, so I guess this is why I found Circular Level Reloaded quite entertaining.

Circular Level Reloaded is a challenging puzzle that presents a series of pieces in the shape of gears that you must turn and arrange in a certain way, so that the colored tiles at the end of those gears match the surrounding circles.

It sounds more complicated than it is, really. In fact, the first few levels in Circular Level Reloaded are quite easy – to get you hooked up on the game - and the real challenge only comes later on, with additional colors and more complex combinations. There are more than 60 levels in Circular Level Reloaded, so you'll be amused for a while!

Circular Level Reloaded is a fun puzzle with an attractive approach. The main drawback to the game is, in my opinion, graphics. Despite being just a logic puzzle, graphics could have been made more elaborate and attractive. It would simply make the whole game better, a well as having the help area in Circular Level Reloaded in other languages apart from German.

If you like puzzle games, you're going to like Circular Level Reloaded, though you need to be prepared to play with quite simple graphics.

BlackFlip 0.51 - Flip the tiles to score points

Puzzle games are great for wasting some time on your and it's always nice to see something new and original to try out, rather than the same old challenges all the time.

BlackFlip is an interesting puzzler where your mission is to flip over black and white tiles in order to tile the grid in one color. There are more than 6,000 different grids included in the game each with a different pattern, and a differing difficulty level, from one to five stars (with five being the most difficult).

I found the game a little frustrating at first because it's very difficult to work out exactly what you're supposed to be doing and there are no in-game instructions. After checking out the demo video on the developer's site and experimenting for a bit, I finally worked out the dynamics of the game.

BlackFlip actually proves to be quite engrossing after a while, and the thrill of turning an entire grid white becomes strangely compelling. With so many puzzles included and a Zoom facility to help you out, there's certainly plenty of life in this one. Unfortunately though, I felt some of the difficulty ratings were a bit odd, as some supposed five-star ones I finished very easily, while I puzzled over a few one-star games for ages.

The gameplay is a little convoluted, but once you get the hang of it, BlackFlip becomes an amusing way to pass some time.

TangledBugs 1.36 - Help the bugs unwind the web

Personally I detest creepy crawlies and there's nothing I hate more than walking through a spider's web and enduring the ensuing panic as I try to pull it all off my face before Incy Wincey comes along.

Someone told me the best way to overcome your fears is to confront them. I wasn't ready to dip my head into a big bucket of spiders though, so I thought I'd try out this game to improve my web-untangling skills without having to face a real-life arachnid.

When you first start out, TangledBugs seems a little complicated. You're faced with a tangled mess of spindles that you must unravel by moving around the bugs that each end is attached to. You can't move to the next level until none of the lines are crossing each other.

Once you've checked out the in-game demonstration it becomes easier to understand. You soon realise that when the lines turn green it means that they don't intersect another line, leaving you free to concentrate on untangling the rest of the web.

Of course, you could just sit there randomly moving the lines around until they all go green, but in the timed, sudden-death mode a little more logic is required in order to get out before it's too late. The graphics are pretty slick and being able to control the game using the touchscreen is a real boon, but ultimately I found the game gave be a headache because of the sheer complexity of some of the puzzles.

Nevertheless, TangledBugs is ideal for anyone who wants to keep their brain engaged during a wet lunchtime in the office.

Caisses 1.21 - Impressive free Sokoban game with 500 levels

If you've ever dreamed about working in a warehouse (and I know I have on many occasions), then the chances are you used to love playing Sokoban. Although, you probably didn't know it was called Sokoban, but it's the one where you have to push boxes in a straight line into a designated space.

Well, the game is still alive and kicking, and is widespread on mobile devices. Caisses is one of the more interesting clones I've come across though, and provides amazing depth considering it's a piece of freeware.

Your basic aim is the same old story - you're a warehouseman who must shuffle parcels around. You can only push the boxes in a straight line, and you can't push more than one box at a time. As a result, the gameplay is very addictive, but certainly not very original.

The best thing about Caisses is the fact that you can customise the game to the n-th degree. Not only can you choose from a bevy of cool backgrounds, but there are loads of game themes to choose from too. For instance, you can choose to play as Pac-Man, Zangeif, a nurse, or even the Linux penguin, and the objects you push change accordingly.

It gets pretty tough as you progress through the 500 levels, so it would've been nice to see some kind of hints feature, but the challenge of getting your head around the hundreds of puzzles is enough to keep you coming back for more.

The graphics aren't the best ever and because this version is ported from a mobile phone version, the game window is quite small.

Nevertheless, Caisses offers a fun way to test your brain during a break from your usual routine.

Now normally, the thought of getting a virus on my computer fills me with dread. However, as soon as I started playing HexaVirus I discovered a new passion for bugs.

That's largely because this game is just so darned addictive. You start out with a gameboard filled with different colored hexagons. The object of the game is to remove the hexagons by getting different viruses to eat them (obviously it's not based on the scientific nature of viruses, but that doesn't matter).

A colored virus appears in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen. When you click to select it, all the touching hexagons of that color will be wiped away, freeing up more space on the gameboard. You need to select the color of the virus you want to lay down based on the position of the hexagons on the screen.

It sounds complicated but within a couple of tries of HexaVirus you'll understand exactly what's going on. You must clear the board within 30 moves, a challenge which becomes as infuriating as it is gripping. The sense of achievement once you've cleared the board is so immense that you'll be itching to go to the next level and try to clear it in one less move.

The graphics are fun and colorful and the animations of the little virus characters are cool too. Beware though that this PC version of HexaVirus has been ported from a Windows Mobile game, so the game screen is small.

Ultimately though, it's an innovative and thoroughly enjoyable puzzle game.

Shift 1.06 - Wipe out the squares to score points

I love a good puzzle game to pass the time during my lunch break, but I'm bored of all the usual crosswords and sudoku games in the newspaper.

Shift makes for a refreshing break on your PC, with some innovative gameplay that will keep you hooked for ages. The game consists of a series of colored blocks with faces on that you must match together in groups of three or more to clear them. The difference between this and games like Tetris is that all the blocks move as one big lump. As Shift has been ported from a mobile phone version the game window is very small, but you do get used to this mini view fairly quickly.

Shift boasts a very simple control system, and you just need to click on any of the four directional arrows to move the blocks in that way. I'll admit that, at first, the game tried my patience somewhat, and I thought I'd never score more than a few points. With a bit of persistence though I was able to rack up combos and hit some seriously good scores (even if I do say so myself!) After that it would take a meteor (or, in reality, the fact I had to write a review about it) to get me off this one.

It can become somewhat repetitive but the inclusion of two difficulty levels and a high scores table adds to the longevity of Shift. You can also choose to show or hide the next bricks to test yourself even further.

This is an innovative puzzle game with colorful graphics that's ideal for amusing yourself during a coffee or lunch break.

Boogie Bunnies - Have fun saving bunnies with this easy to play puzzle game

Boogie Bunnies is a puzzle game in which you have to 'save' the highest number of rabbits from falling into a river in order to complete each level. The way you do it is by matching the little animals by colours so that when you form a group of at least 3 bunnies they ‘disappear’ in front of you. You can stick rabbits together either in vertical or horizontal lines, but never diagonally. This is to say, the play field is essentially a perfectly square grid, densely packed with animals.

At the bottom of the screen there's a progress meter that slowly fills up when you save your friends. Once the meter is filled, you progress to the next round. As bunnies descend down the playing field and fall to their tragic deaths in the ice river their loss has a huge impact on your meter, until it is ultimately depleted and the game ends.

Boogie Bunnies is very easy and fun to play and the 3D cartoon graphics are really pleasant. Although the game is meant for kids starting from the age of three, you can still have fun with your friends thanks to the multiplayer mode which can grant you hours of laughter.
