A very long time ago a dragon named Bolgrot arrived in the eternal Province of Amakna. The young Rykke Errel was the only one with sufficient courage to face the terrible creature. Instead of reducing him to dust as he could easily have done, the dragon prostrated himself before the young paladin and swore allegiance to him.

Rykke met Helséphine, a young enchantress, and fell madly in love with her. When he introduced Helséphine to Bolgrot, Rykke could not have imagined what would happen.
The dragon, mad with rage, slew the sweet Helséphine and flew far away, ravaging everything in his path. Rykke threw himself into the pursuit of the dragon. When he found him, the two former friends clashed in a titanic struggle. Using his weapons and his magic, Rykke managed to strike down the dragon; however, mortally wounded, the young hero died soon afterwards.

Seeking an explanation for the sudden violence shown by Bolgrot, the sages of Amakna discovered in the dragon’s entrails 6 strangely coloured eggs that they called DOFUS. Consequently, it was discovered that when these eggs were reunited their power was absolute. Absolute, but also unstable. The sages took the wise decision to keep these terrible relics a closely guarded secret.

During the centuries that followed the secret of the existence of the DOFUS was so well guarded that it was eventually forgotten altogether. But one accursed day, the guardians of the secret discovered that the DOFUS had disappeared. The news was not slow to spread, arousing terror and covetousness.

It was not long before numerous adventurers arrived in Amakna, attracted by the prospect of glory or plunder. The destiny of Amakna from the on became uncertain, and the appearance of many unknown and terrifying creatures added to the confusion.

We're in the 22nd century and the human race is in trouble. This is the main setting of Space Siege, an interesting mixture between RPG and action games.

Space Siege creates a dark, oppressive atmosphere inside the last surviving spaceship after the massacre that wiped out the Earth. You're the only one capable of confronting and defeating the Kerak, the invading alien race. For this reason you'll be assigned several different missions in Space Siege, in which you'll have to explore unknown areas, collect mechanical parts and kill loads and loads of enemies.

The graphics in Space Siege are excellent, especially as regards light and shadow effects. The space environment somehow reminds me of the Alien series: a gloomy spaceship full of dangerous creatures in which you need to explore in constant tension.

As for gameplay, Space Siege is played very much like role-playing adventures: you use the mouse for everything (moving, killing, interacting with objects…) and use keyboard to change perspective. It's somewhat hard to get used to it, especially if you come from action games, but the worst is definitely having to repeatedly click on an enemy in order to kill it.

Space Siege is an original and attractive mixture of action and RPG elements, set in a gloomy space atmosphere.

I've never played a game named after a bone before, but was pleasantly surprised by what Tibia offered. The plot is not a whole not different from your standard role playing game. You're a knight, or a druid or a sorcerer or a paladin and must explore a mystical world solving quests and building up your skills and weapons.

There are plenty of zones to explore, although you'll only be able to access some of them if you're a Premium subscriber. The game is pretty easy to get into, even if you've never touched an MMORPG before. The inventory is quite straightforward to understand and the battle system is highly intuitive. Graphically, the game reminds me a lot of Ultima, which is no bad thing, because although it's colourful and detailed, Tibia doesn't put a massive strain on your system resources.

One of the few things that annoyed me about this game was the fact that you lose your skills, experience and even levels when you die, making it very frustrating having to build all this up again - only to lose it all over again.

As a result, Tibia is a highly enjoyable game if you have the patience to come back and build up your skills again whenever you die.

Who hasn't dreamed as a child of being a merciless pirate setting sail across the seven seas in search of fortune and glory?

Now is your chance to bring those sweet childhood memories back and pretend you're a pirate, though this time the game takes place in your web browser and you have to compete against other players from all over the world.

Seafight is an original RPG online game, both in its main plot and its general concept. On the one hand, unlike other role-playing adventures, Seafight is set in a pirate environment, with sea battles, cannons, treasure islands and mercenaries drinking rum in the pub while they wait to be hired for their next adventure. On the other hand, the whole game is played online, on the Seafight website, without having to install anything; a quick, free user registration will do.

As for the game itself, despite its originality, I must say it's a bit disappointing. Maybe I imagined something different and therefore Seafight fell short of my expectations, but the overall impression is one of confusion and network issues. The interface is cluttered with images and graphics, which is probably why the pages take a while to load. Also, I lost connection to the server a few times while testing the game, something I found disappointing.

Other than that, I thought the pirate environment was quite appealing. I also liked other features such as online combats with other players, quests to improve your experience level and the possibility to customize your equipment by buying or upgrading ships, acquiring new weapons or hiring your crew. If Seafight could improve its interface and fix connectivity issues, I'm sure it would be a great game.

Seafight is an original RPG online web game set in a pirate universe, where you can do quests, battle against enemy ships controlled by other players and grow in experience and treasures. Unfortunately its interface is a bit too confusing and the connection is not as stable as expected.

Space science fiction has loads of fans around the world, so I wouldn't be surprised to see hundreds of players having fun in DarkOrbit.

This free online web game sets you behind the wheel of a spaceship as a pilot who works for a company, which you can choose from Earth, Mars or Venus. Your main objective in the game will be to collect raw materials for your company, as this is the only way to generate energy and therefore become ruler of the universe.

Being a web game, you enter DarkOrbit right in your web browser by entering your username and password. In this way you access your user profile, containing a summary of relevant data you can check at a glance. But if what you want is some action, go ahead and click on the Play button.

This will open a new window where you can actually play the game. Graphics are quite basic, but they do the trick. Now all you have to do is travel around space (clicking on the screen with your mouse – cursor keys don't work) and collect raw material, while you gain experience by killing enemy ships and other space creatures. Experience points can also be earned by doing quests.

DarkOrbit works fine for casual gamers who just need some easy fun for a while, but I don't think it will appeal that much to hardcore gamers, who will probably feel disappointed by the game's simple plot and even more simple graphics. The connectivity issues I had while testing the game won't help either.

DarkOrbit is a free, web game that challenges you to command a spaceship and wander around space in search of raw materials for your company. However, I don't think it's the kind of game you would spend hours playing.

Role-playing games are usually set in medieval environments and feature knights, trolls and all sorts of mythological creatures. But some other RPG titles stand out of the crowd and offer an original setting along with some unique features.

This is the case of Wonderland Online, a role-playing adventure with an extensive social component, Japanese-style characters and environments and a turn-based combats that reminded us of pure RPG games. The first steps involve, as in any other RPG game, choosing a server and creating your character. You'll spawn in a ship that's unfortunately bound to sink, after which you're rescued by a nice castaway and the real adventure begins.

Wonderland Online features a bit of everything: doing quests to obtain rewards, killing enemies to gain experience points and progress through levels, learning skills, developing professions and, of course, meeting other players from around the globe. All these elements make of Wonderland Online a really attractive melting pot for all sorts of players, whether they like to wander around chatting with people or they prefer to focus on the development of their character.

I liked the game's visual style a lot. Characters - and even more, objects – are designed with great detail, with a nice isometric perspective. An important drawback to this design, however, is the fact that the text in the chat window is ridiculously difficult to read and doesn't get better even if you change the font color.

Other than that, I found Wonderland Online quite entertaining and addictive. In fact, I had to make an effort to stop playing and start writing this review. One final tip: don't feel overwhelmed by the amount of information you're presented with during the first few minutes of gameplay: the game is really easy to control and besides, you can always ask other players for help.

Wonderland Online includes traditional RPG elements (skills, professions, turn-based combats, resource management) together with social networking characteristics and a very original design. All these features make of Wonderland Online an MMORGP that's definitely worth a try.

Avencast: Rise of the Mage tells the story of a young boy who's preparing himself in an Academy to be the best mage in the world… rings you a bell?

No, the mage's name is not Harry and the Academy is not Hogwarts. Despite any initial similarities, Avencast is quite a different game, more in the style of classical videogames such as Diablo or Neverwinter Nights. Just like these, Avencast mixes an RPG-style adventure with action-packed combats in real time, providing you with an entertaining title that will challenge your different skills.

This means that you'll need to be lethally quick in battles against all kinds of nasty supernatural creatures, but also rack your brains in order to solve a bunch of puzzles and riddles which will in turn give you access to new sections in the game. Also, there are loads of new weapons and spells to improve your character as you progress along the game. Sadly the number of available levels in the demo is too short to experience the game at its fullest, but at least you can get a glimpse of it.

Avencast features highly detailed graphics and a overhead perspective you can adjust with the mouse. Also, there are three different ways to control your characters (varying in camera position and avatar movement) so that you feel as comfortable as possible.

Avencast: Rise of the Mage provides you with an entertaining mixture of magic, action, roleplaying and real-time that combats that challenges both your dexterity and your brains.

Love them or hate them, massive multiplayer online role playing games usually have this geeky aura of being extraordinarily difficult adventures, only intended for role-play lovers and heavy videogame players. If you share this idea, you should give a try to this game. SilkRoad Online is a good option to begin in MMORPGs, if you ever feel an interest in it.

The suitability of SilkRoad as an introduction for online role-playing games is due mainly to two facts: one, it’s absolutely free; and two, it’s really a very good RPG –that is, for a free RPG. So it’s a perfect choice for casual players who prefer not to get too involved, nor have to pay a monthly fee for playing.

However, if there’s something you’ll need to play SilkRoad, it’s patience. Loads of it. First, you’ll have to wait for the file to download, then for the EXE to be patched with the latest releases. After that, you may find yourself waiting to enter the over-populated servers and play. In fact, these issues were the main complaint of SilkRoad players, although now seems that the problem has been solved. At least, we didn't have to wait nor had lag problems during our tests.

Once you’re logged in, you start by creating your character. You can have up to three different characters and can customize them by choosing their physical aspect, clothes and weapons. When you’re ready to go, let the adventure begins! You’re free to move around this fantastic universe set in the ancient era of the Chinese Silk trading route and inhabited by players from all over the world. Use the map (M) and make your way through cities and landscapes, either killing enemies or accepting quests. Both will give you experience, which you need to level up your character. As you reach higher levels, you will be able to improve your skills in weapons, force and magic. Also, after level 20 you’ll have three professions to choose from: merchant, hunter or thief.

As a multiplayer game, there is also a heavy social side to SilkRoad. You can actually chat to other people and exchange mail messages with them, or join a guild in order to complete high-level quests which otherwise would be too difficult. However, most players end up spending their whole time grinding (that is, just killing monsters) as it is the easiest way to gain experience.

Concerning graphics, Silkroad offers high-quality characters and scenarios, especially if we bear in mind that this is a completely free game. OK, they’re not the best graphics in the RPG world, but good enough to ensure a realistic gaming experience. Its music is even better: a classical-style background soundtrack that adds to the atmosphere of adventure.

To sum up, we could go back to the words we said at the beginning: SilkRoad Online is a good introductory game for beginners. But if you’re already a serious role fan and you’re looking for a really high quality MMORPG, I would suggest joining me –and seven million other people- in World of Warcraft.

MMORPG developers are apparently doing some research on more original settings for their adventures, as the traditional medieval environment is quickly getting wasted. So, after seeing an Egypt-oriented game not long ago, today we have RF Online, a free online RPG with a science-fiction background.

Despite this innovative approach, RF Online keeps all the traditional elements of the RPG genre. You create a character, picking up any of the three possible races and several other classes, and then enter a widely populated world (server) where you'll be entrusted a series of missions. On accomplishing them, you'll be rewarded with valuable objects such as new armory or more powerful weapons and you'll also earn experience points. The fact that RF Online follows the typical RPG structure so faithfully helps a lot when trying to grasp the basics of the game. In any case, I recommend you to watch the complete tutorial included in the game.

RPG games usually take a long time to be properly tested and evaluated. Bearing that in mind, I must say I got an excellent impression from RF Online during our tests. It took me a long time to play (installation, patching and account creation) but then I was able to enjoy a very elaborate adventure, detailed graphics and a really excellent soundtrack. Also, the server's response time was great.

The first missions are really easy to quickly get you on the move; besides, you can always ask for help in the chat, as RF Online emphasizes team work a lot. The only thing I didn't like was camera control: it takes a while to get used to moving your character with the left mouse button while controlling the angle with the right one.

RF Online is a very original RPG set in a futuristic environment, but which at the same time keeps the traditional RPG elements. Plus, it's completely free!

During the last few years there's has been a clear increase of online roleplaying games, both free and subscription-based. Of course, quality varies a lot between all of them but sometimes you can find nice surprises like 2Moon.

First, this game has a strong background story, which is carefully explained on their website and which gives certain credibility to the game itself. Second, graphics are really good, both in characters and scenarios, something we honestly didn't expect in a free game. Last, but not least, the background music is also very good. It doesn't disturb you at any moment and contributes to the adventure's atmosphere.

It's difficult to state whether a RGP is good or not, having played it only for a while. But what I can say is that this game looks very promising. It features important success ingredients such as an easy gameplay and an important social component. Since the very first minute I was able to move around, talk to other people and start doing quests, although obviously progressing through levels, improving your gear and learning new abilities will take more time.

In all, 2Moon is an interesting adventure that adds one more choice to the free MMORPG menu.

Once your character appears on Azeroth, the game's imaginary universe, you're free to move around, explore the land or talk to other players, making use of the game's extensive social component. Your main goal in the game is to raise your character from level 1 up to level 70, earning experience points by killing monsters and doing quests which may range from gathering a few flowers to killing a fearsome dragon hidden in its den. The higher the level, the better the game objects (weapons, armor, spells, etc.) you can use. Eventually you'll be able to buy the most expensive items, like a flying mount, and enter the most dangerous raids, some of which can only be successfully finished with a very well organized team of 40 players.

As for graphics, the game displays extraordinary landscapes ranging from the snow-covered slopes of Dun Morogh to the jungle-like lands of Strangleton Vale or the desert plains of Tanaris. The atmosphere is enriched by natural sounds and excellent background music.

In short, World of Warcraft is a great adventure which can be played in many different ways. This may precisely be the reason why it appeals to so many players, from teenagers to grown-ups, all over the world.
