Being a massive football fan, I'm really looking forward to the forthcoming Euro 2008 Championships, which take place in Austria and Switzerland in June.

The tournament looks set to be a real cracker and what better way to prepare for the footy-fest than by downloading the official wallpaper of the championships? Its design is stylish yet conservative. It's basically a blue background with a couple of large but subtle icons on it. The Euro 2008 logo is displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the picture and there's an ad for the official website on the left of the screen.

It makes for a good background, as there's not too much going on and few colors used, meaning that your desktop items are still clearly visible. I guess the only thing that lets it down for me is the fact that there is no football imagery on it. Perhaps it would've been nice to see a photo of one of the stars of the tournament on there.

Nevertheless, if you're getting excited about the forthcoming tournament I'm sure you'll like this one.

The Earth is probably the best planet I've ever been to, so I like to keep abreast of what's going on in the world. I found this desktop background great for monitoring cloud cover, the advance of day and night and noctornal lights around the globe.

Although the cloud cover only renews itself every 3 hours, you might be able to find a server faster than those built into the Desktop Earth and apply this for quicker generation. The illuminated surface of the Earth updates every minute though, so it's great for finding out where the Sun is concentrated at any given moment. I would have liked to have seen a few more options, such as the ability to rotate the image on your desktop, but on the whole Desktop Earth provides a decent solar clock, a rudimentary weather chart and, more importantly, a stunning view from your desktop.

Despite the apparently direct relationship between his art and the cartoon sources, Roy Lichtenstein described his process of selecting and transforming images as one of "seeing, composing, and unifying." His drawings reflect how deftly and freely he could adjust the balance of forms, color, line, and detail; these measured studies for paintings were scaled up and projected onto canvas to be enlarged and redrawn.

This process led him to adopt the use of benday dots, which quickly became his signature mark. Just as in the comics, Lichtenstein used these dots in his paintings to convey surface, tone, shading, and form; yet unlike the mechanically printed originals, Lichtenstein's dots were painted by hand on canvas with brush or stencil.
