EarthDesk features three map views (Political, Natural Color and Living Earth Satellite), 11 projections, and 10,000 cities. You have many options that cover how the Earth is projected onto your desktop, the centering of the map, and how you want it to refresh. Note that EarthDesk does not install itself as a standalone application - it simply loads as a preference pane, from where you can administer it.

When you install the EarthDesk in your preference pane, you're presented with the configuration options. The first thing you need to do is choose a city to center it on in the Locations tab (your hometown location in other words). There are 10,000 to go through but fortunately you can search for them using the search box.

The Display tab is the most interesting as regards setup. In here, you can configure what kind of view you want to use, how far you want to zoom into the Earth and how close you want to see the clouds. Note that you can access the preferences at any time from the menu bar, where you'll see the EarthDesk icon although you'll have to activate this option in the actual preferences itself.

You'll have to experiment for quite a while to find the view that you like. One thing I definitely recommend however is zooming into the planet because it's a bit more interesting than seeing the globe as a whole (at least during the day anyway). The cloud formations you see are the actual clouds in the sky at any given moment and their movements update according to the time schedule you've specified.

All things considered, this isn't particularly interesting. There's a saying 'About as interesting as watching paint dry' - and 'watching clouds move' could be used in the way. I imagine that EarthDesk is more interesting at night when darkness falls and you start to cities light up. I also experienced problems stopping and starting Earth Desk - the second time I tried to start it, it simply wouldn't.

EarthDesk is an interesting desktop background for geographers, those keen on keeping an eye on weather movements in real time, or simply those that want a slightly more original desktop background.

Wally is an automatic wallpaper changer with a very particular characteristic: it grabs images from several sources, not only selected folders and files in your local drive, but also several online sources like Flickr, Yahoo!, Panoramio and more. Also, the program gives you the possibility to save the downloaded images to your local drive.

The good thing about Wally is that it's like having endless wallpapers for your computer. The bad thing is that you can't really choose them – except for the images in your hard drive, of course.

The program does feature some configuration settings with which you can filter the images that are going to be used, but as there's no preview you don't actually know what image has been chosen until it's finally displayed on the screen. This is the kind of uncertainty that will please some users, but which some others will find extremely annoying. On the downside, Wally was a bit unstable during our tests, and tended to crash if we wanted to select the picture manually.

A few years ago Webshots Desktop used to be an online service from which you downloaded wallpapers at will. It has now evolved to a desktop utility to download, manage and organize your collection of wallpapers, though it still depends a lot – too much, for our taste – on the web browser.

The Webshots Desktop interface features a series of tabs, each of them with a different purpose: download new wallpapers from the site, check images marked as favorite by the Webshots Desktop members, and organize both your local and online files. However all of these actions, like we said before, end up working in your browser.

While the collection of images offered by Webshots Desktop is astonishing in terms of quantity and quality, the truth is that the program is very limited. Unless you pay for a Premium account, you only get to downloadd a wallpaper a day, the highest resolution you can get is 800x600 and your personal upload is also limited. Add to that the fact that images come in a non-standard format (WBZ) and Webshots Desktop suddenly doesn’t look that attractive anymore.

Webshots Desktop used to be a great resource to download high-quality wallpapers, but now it’s a bit too bloated – and free accounts are too limited.
