When you have all your music on your PC, it’s really important to have it well sorted and catalogued so you can always reach your favorite tracks. But making sure your music library is kept up to date is a gargantuan task to say the least. Even though this is relatively easy to do in iTunes, you can also use a program specifically made to handle this chore. eTunes is a music organizer with which you can create play lists, rewrite ID3 tags and rearrange your music library. Since eTunes doesn’t actually load up any of your tracks it barely takes up any memory and you don’t have to worry about it slowing down your PC while you are entering modifications to your track titles.

It only takes a few minutes to get to grips with eTunes. Once the program has loaded the information for all your songs from iTunes, it displays a list of your complete music library. All you need to do is select the entries you wish to modify and type in the modifications. Luckily you can make changes in batch, something that comes in handy if you need to change the name of an artist and don’t want to work your way track by track. The search bar at the bottom of the program is rather rudimentary but it comes in handy looking for a particular song. While eTunes is not a music player it still lets you listen to your favorite songs. Clicking on the big play button at the top left will launch the selected track in your default music player.

eTunes is a modest little program to help you organize your tracks. While it sports a clean interface and convenient tools, I’m not sure it offers anything that iTunes doesn’t.

Folder management is something that can easily be improved on in Windows and The Magic Folder aims to do exactly this.

The Magic Folder is basically a utility that helps you categorize and move files. When you drag a file into the utility, it will look at the file extension and place Document files (like DOC, XLS, PPT, etc) in the Documents folder. The same principle works for other file extensions - image files like (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, etc) are automatically placed into the Pictures folder. It's not fixed in stone however where the files you go. You can add/remove file extensions recognized by The Magic Folder and change where files go or even add your own folder locations. Alternatively, you can configure the program to prompt you for the storage location each time you move a folder.

The program does not operate entirely independently of Windows Explorer - when you click The Magic Folder you can select from the list of folders you want to access and then jump directly to that folder in Windows Explorer. Most recently, the developer has updated the folder graphics to encompass four different folder types.

With YouTube and other sites providing ever increasing amounts of video content, it's easy to lose track of all the clips you've downloaded - that's not to mention all your DivX films.

Personal Video Database is a very simple but functional database that gathers together all of the clips on your hard drive that allows you to catalogue them in some kind of meaningful way. perhaps the most aesthetically beautiful or complete in terms of functionality, but it works and All the basic features you'd expect such as cataloguing by genre, title, rating etc are there plus there's even a rudimentary online database check that can verify what your film or clip is based on keywords. This even extends to importing cover art of films and TV shows if necessary or available although you can disable this retrieval feature as it can take some time. If you want to expand it the program, you can do so via plugins that are included in the installation package although most of these plugins just extend the information retrieving functions.

It's not the best looking program in the world and it doesn't come with any outstanding features but its fast, lightweight and does what it's supposed to.

Most of us have a fair stack of DVDs kicking about the house these days and with so many drawers, cupboards and attics in today's homes it can be very difficult to keep track of your film collection. Fox Movie Manager is one of a plethora of software applications designed to help you keep your flicks in order. The unusual thing about this app though is its interface, which is drop dead gorgeous, complete with a shiny black background and high quality posters from each movie.

The interface is more than just a pretty face though, and it contains some nifty cataloging tools, such as the ability to view most searched-for films, and a cool title and title page navigator that gives you a summary of each film when you mouseover its image. There are a wealth of different panels locked within the interface that let you manage your film loans, list films that you haven't seen yet, and make use of a powerful search function.

Fox Movie Manager can get a little overwhelming at times due to the sheer number of windows and panels that adorn the interface. It would have also been nice to see a field for recording entries by number, as many enthusiasts like to categorize their DVDs in this way. With a little patience though, this is a very powerful piece of kit for anyone with a passion for film.

iTunes is, for many reasons, the most popular music organizer. But that doesn’t' mean you can't use alternate cataloguers to manage your ever growing MP3 collection.

One of those alternatives is Jukes, a full featured music manager with which you can bring some organization to your chaotic MP3 library – especially if it's already too big to be manually managed. The program can automatically add all the albums in your collection by simply selecting your music folder. No need to type in any data!

Jukes displays very detailed information about each track and album, including album art. You can search the database using filters, see statistics about your music collection and even generate a report with a list of all your songs The program also features an embedded player, although we could say this is not its main strength – it ended up freezing the whole application during our tests.

If you'd like to test something different to iTunes, you may as well give Jukes a go. Though not as powerful, it's still a handy, full featured music manager.

If you're a big movie fan then you'll probably have a ton of DivX files that need cataloguing and organising.

MovieManager can be used to lookup information on the Internet and locate and catalogue your movies for you. It makes organising and finding your movies much easier and features Internet Movie Database (IMDB) integration to ensure that your films are updated with the latest info. The program stores everything from cast members to production credit details including when it and where it was made.

It's also very flexible in that it can accept pretty much any kind of multimedia file as it scans your drive. It can then list and organise films based on genre, actors and other specialist criteria. If the data is wrong or you need more, it provides direct links for each film in the IMDB. You can even generate links from the database to the films on your hard drive so all you have to do is find and click the film to watch it. The problem with this is that if you constantly move your film files to external storage devices, the links get quickly out of date so it's a good idea to use just one drive and keep them all in there if you're going to use MovieManager.

Librarian Pro is a very flexible application to organize all your books, movies, games or whatever you wish to keep a list of. Although the program still feels quite unstable (importing or exporting didn't work properly for me), we'll let that go for now as the program is still a pre-release. What makes Librarian Pro interesting is how easy it is to view your list and create new smart collections.

You can customize the layout of lists you export and send them to the web or to your iPod. Librarian can also import elements from mulitple sources, like borrowers from your Address Book or item information from a number of sites. You can view your Amazon cart from the application and even retrieve things like album covers.

Librarian Pro is a great program to keep updated lists of your favorite items and always be aware of who's borrowed what from you.

With BookDB you can enter all your books with author, category, publisher etc and print them out in a variety of formats. Why would you need such a thing? Well, if you're always going to book sales and buying bargains only to get home and find you've doubled up, take a printout with you! BookDB has a super-condensed print mode so you'll need a magnifying glass, but at least it'll save a tree or two.

BookDB also has lending library features. With them, you can add borrowers, loan out books, add multiple copies and so on. If you'd like to test these new features, just create a blank file called 'library.txt' in the same folder as BookDB2.exe and restart the program.
