MSD Collections 2.20 - Excellent collection manager for books, movies and more

MSD Collections enables you to organize a wide range of collections or at least, the most popular ones: books, magazines, movies, music and programs. Everything is managed under the same interface, with only one menu changing for each kind of collection.

This is clearly an advantage when learning how to use the program, something for which you will need some time due to the huge amount of options and settings available. In fact, the whole interface feels overwhelmed by tables, toolbars and icons, and its design could be certainly improved.

In spite of this flaw, MSD Collections is an excellent application. It enables you to create highly detailed records of every single item in your collections and even track loans and generate PDF reports. Plus, databases are managed with the reliable SQL technology and also encrypted for more security.

WhereIsIt 3.90 - Create and manage multimedia catalogs

WhereIsIt is an application written for 32-bit Windows operating systems, designed to help you maintain and organize a catalog of your computer media collection, including CD-ROMs, audio CDs, diskettes, removable drives, hard drives, network drives, DVDs, or any other media that Windows can access as a drive.

The most basic goal for WhereIsIt is to provide access to the contents of any media you have from a cataloged database, even if the media itself is not available on the system - you can browse lists of files and folders, search by any criteria, use descriptions, thumbnails, categories, flags, etc.

WhereIsIt can be used to handle any kind of data, including downloaded programs, magazine CD-ROMs, music collections like MP3s or audio CDs, graphics collections, document backups, etc. WhereIsIt can handle lots of them, too, a couple hundreds or thousands disks in a catalog is nothing unusual, yet catalogs remain reasonably small, single-filed and easy to transfer or send to other users. You can also create more than one catalog, and at any time open and work with as many catalogs at once as needed.

WhereIsIt is easy to use for both beginners and advanced users. It features a familiar and well thought-out, Explorer-like user interface, combined with strong searching and reporting capabilities, multi-language support, automated description and thumbnails importing through extendable plugins from more than 70 different sources, and much more besides.

All My Movies 5.0 - A useful cataloger for your movie collection

All My Movies is a nifty utility for cataloging one's movie collection. It supports all formats, new ones - DVD, Video CD, AVI and MPEG files, and old ones as well - VHS tapes, for example. The program helps easily track films - which movies are loaned, which ones are borrowed, etc. Most importantly, the program is specifically designed for DVDs and works fully automatically with all digital carriers.

Basically, all a user has to do is to insert a DVD or scan a hard-drive. The program will extract all movie information - title, director, actors, description, genre, languages, subtitles, etc. If absent, this information can be imported from online movie databases, like IMDb.com with one mouse click or entered manually.

The best thing about All My Movies is how easy it is to use. Having a tree-like database structure, program owner can quickly sort movies by genre, actor or director. Another great perk is an option to capture movie screens for DVDs and AVI files and attach them to the database. User comments can be added too.

True movie fans with thousands of titles in their collection are certain to like the fact that movie data stored with All My Movies can be exported to HTML, MS Excel or plain text files. In addition, the program comes with password protection options to prevent unauthorized access, and a straightforward loan manager. Another advantage is that the program support third-party plug-ins, including database import from other popular movie cataloguing applications.

Ant Movie Catalog 3.5.1.1 - Manage your collection of movies DVD, CD and tapes

There's plenty of DVD and CD managers out there but there are few that allow you to organise DVDs, CDs, DivX files and even cassettes in one easy to browse and search database.

Since I'd rather have my video and audio collection all under one program, I quite liked Ant Movie Catalog. First of all, it's completely free and the source code is open to modification by its users who are brought together by the program's forum. There are several reasons why this database appeals.

First of all is simplicity - it's not bloated in any way so searching and navigating through your collection either by format, genre, alphabetically or year is extremely easy and fast. Second of all, it takes a lot of the hard work out of cataloguing your collection because it imports information about your media from the internet using scripts. These include scripts for the IMDB, DVDFR (a French DVD website), Allocine /a French film site) and Culturalia (a Spanish multimedia site).

In addition, it can store all information in two formats - either binary or XML - the latter makes it possible to export your collection to Excel and other database applications. If you do add too many album and film covers to Ant Movie Catalog, it can start to slow down a bit but there is the option of linking to external pictures rather than importing them. You can also display in graphical format, stats relating to your multimedia collection - how many of a certain format you have, genre, date etc.

Lightweight, easy to use and covering just about any conceivable media you might own, Ant Movie Catalog is an easy and free way to bring your collection together.

Librarian Pro is a very flexible application to organize all your books, movies, games or whatever you wish to keep a list of. Although the program still feels quite unstable (importing or exporting didn't work properly for me), we'll let that go for now as the program is still a pre-release. What makes Librarian Pro interesting is how easy it is to view your list and create new smart collections.

You can customize the layout of lists you export and send them to the web or to your iPod. Librarian can also import elements from mulitple sources, like borrowers from your Address Book or item information from a number of sites. You can view your Amazon cart from the application and even retrieve things like album covers.

Librarian Pro is a great program to keep updated lists of your favorite items and always be aware of who's borrowed what from you.

Movie Label 2009 4.1 - Catalog your entire movie collection

If you're a movie fan then you've probably got tons of films - both on DVD and DivX - and you may be losing track of what and what you haven't got.

The important thing with any program like this is that it makes data entry quick and easy and Movie Label 2009 certainly allows this. To get going, simply start the "Movie Query" function and type the name of the movie you wish to add to your collection. The cool thing is that Movie Label then downloads data about the movie and adds it to your database automatically. The problem is that sometimes, it doesn't seem to recognise films but unless you've got a real eclectic collection, you should be OK. It also makes searching through your films easy to check whether you have a film or not - just click on the column header and your collection will be sorted by that particular field. This can be by title, name of actors or theme which is useful in organising your collection on the basis of your favourite themes or actors. To top this out, the program includes export options to XML, HTML, Excel and text files.

A great organisational tool for movie fans that are starting to find their collection spiralling out of control.

The Magic Folder 2.0 - A magical way to organise your folders

Folder management is something that can easily be improved on in Windows and The Magic Folder aims to do exactly this.

The Magic Folder is basically a utility that helps you categorize and move files. When you drag a file into the utility, it will look at the file extension and place Document files (like DOC, XLS, PPT, etc) in the Documents folder. The same principle works for other file extensions - image files like (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, etc) are automatically placed into the Pictures folder. It's not fixed in stone however where the files you go. You can add/remove file extensions recognized by The Magic Folder and change where files go or even add your own folder locations. Alternatively, you can configure the program to prompt you for the storage location each time you move a folder.

The program does not operate entirely independently of Windows Explorer - when you click The Magic Folder you can select from the list of folders you want to access and then jump directly to that folder in Windows Explorer. Most recently, the developer has updated the folder graphics to encompass four different folder types.

If you don't have time to manage your folders or check where they've gone, The Magic Folder will ensure that you're desktop stays as tidy as possible.

If you have lots of photos, music, software and documents then it's probably a good idea to begin making backup copies, so that you have everything conveniently stored in CD or DVD. But how can you manage such a collection?

The answer is CD Archiver. This program helps you create an organized catalogue of all your recorded CD and DVD in a very easy way: insert a disc in the drive, choose or create the appropriate category and CD Archiver will read it and store its index of contents in the database. Be warned that, although almost fully automated, the whole process can take a while as the program is a bit slow indexing large discs.

Once you have your database, you can see a nice graphic that displays the distribution and percentages of file types but, what's more important, you'll be able to search for any file with the embedded search engine, without having to check discs one by one.

Visual CD 3.1 - Catalog your CD and DVD collection

When your CD collection outgrows all the available shelves of your bookcase, you know it's time for a bit of organization. And the easiest way to organize a CD collection is by creating a catalog.

Visual CD enables you to create that CD catalog in just a few simple steps. Insert the disk into the CD drive, let Visual CD index its contents and save it as a fully searchable catalog. This means that you can later on explore, search and find files that are saved on CD even if the physical disc is not in the drive.

Visual CD doesn't work only with CD: it also supports DVD, floppy disks, removable hard drives and even folders in your system hard drive. What strikes me is the fact that each drive you explore must be saved as a new catalog, whereas other similar tools save explored drives as categories inside one single catalog.

The program features also very interesting advanced functions such as a duplicate files finder, a file splitter, a photo renaming tool, a playlist generator and a thumbnail maker, among others.

Visual CD lets you save the contents of your CD and DVD in separate catalogs so that you can browse and search your collection without having to insert each disk one by one

If you're a bookworm and you've literally got books all over the place, then why not get organised by cataloguing them all in a database.

And what better tool to do it with than Book Collector which is like the iTunes of book cataloguing. This simply but impressive program allows you to browse through your collection from the comfort of your PC enabling you to share and rediscover old titles that had since been consigned to a dusty bookshelf. You can order your books by author, title, publisher, year or cover art. The clever thing however is that you don't need to scan in any of the cover art - it downloads everything you need from a database simply by using the ISBN number. You can include personal details like purchase date, store, location, whether you've read-it as well as catalogue chapter lists, characters and book creator credits. In addition, the program links book entries to e-book or audio-book files. In addition to downloading cover art, it downloads a quick synopsis of each book which is great for writing reviews or sharing titles with a friend. The only thing lacking maybe is something to save your favourite quotes or pages in and possible a link to the publisher's site for the author's latest releases.

An excellent tool for bookworms that will help you get even more out of your book collection.

If you're a big movie fan then you'll probably have a ton of DivX files that need cataloguing and organising.

MovieManager can be used to lookup information on the Internet and locate and catalogue your movies for you. It makes organising and finding your movies much easier and features Internet Movie Database (IMDB) integration to ensure that your films are updated with the latest info. The program stores everything from cast members to production credit details including when it and where it was made.

It's also very flexible in that it can accept pretty much any kind of multimedia file as it scans your drive. It can then list and organise films based on genre, actors and other specialist criteria. If the data is wrong or you need more, it provides direct links for each film in the IMDB. You can even generate links from the database to the films on your hard drive so all you have to do is find and click the film to watch it. The problem with this is that if you constantly move your film files to external storage devices, the links get quickly out of date so it's a good idea to use just one drive and keep them all in there if you're going to use MovieManager.

A powerful way to organise films that make your collection look great and helps you learn more about your favourite films

SoundBase 2008.02.22 - Play, edit and organize your albums

Soundbase was created to fill a gap in the large amount of free and commercial mp3 players. It doesn't pretend to have the ultimate MP3 or audio solution, but it will most likely fit somewhere into your MP3 playing experience. As a player, as a tag editor or as an organizer. It will always give you a quick way of doing common tasks.

Soundbase uses the windows subsystem that compresses and uncompresses audio files, the Audio Compression Manager (ACM). By using this windows subsystem the player does not require any additional DLLs or drivers, and as such a basic install of Soundbase will take less then 2mb (5mb if you install the 60 basic skins too). Windows itself supports the most common formats (MP3 , WAV, WMA). You might need to read the help section on installing more sophisticated formats (APE, FLAC, Ogg) to enable playback for those files. The Help section provides you with links to free (ACM) codecs packs and will give you information on how to best install the different codec packs and the teams personal preferences on quality and performance of these codec packs.

You can skin Soundbase, organize your music to different locations, edit tag information, search, filter, create playlists. Soundbase doesn't use any registry entries but stores all in one ini file, it is completely anonymous, it can run from any location with limited user access rights, and much more.

StatPlus provides a robust suite of statistics tools and graphical analysis methods that are easily accessed though a simple and straightforward interface. The range of possible applications of StatPlus is virtually unlimited – sociology, financial analysis, biostatistics, economics, insurance industry, healthcare and clinical research, probability calculations for lotteries and gambling operations - to name just a few fields where the program is already being extensively used.

While StatPlus is a “heavy-duty” professional statistical analysis tool, the interface is so simple that even people who have no knowledge of statistics are capable of processing data, provided they know how to use PC and clear instructions are given. This frees up intellectual resources for analyzing the results, rather than agonizing over who and how processed the data, and if any mistakes were made in the process.

SI Cataloguer enables you to create a database with all your CD and DVD (and also hard drive folders) so that you can locate any file stored on them in just a few seconds, even if the disc is no physically inserted into the unit.

This ability has several obvious advantages: it allows you to have your personal media collection perfectly organized and it also provides you with a very efficient way to search for any picture, video or song stored in it. SI Cataloguer has also a contact list and loan tracker to control who has a given CD or DVD at any time.

The program supports metadata for indexing HTML documents and MP3 songs, amongst others. However, it doesn't display EXIF data when managing pictures, nor does it allow the user to create new categories in the database.
