With YouTube and other sites providing ever increasing amounts of video content, it's easy to lose track of all the clips you've downloaded - that's not to mention all your DivX films.

Personal Video Database is a very simple but functional database that gathers together all of the clips on your hard drive that allows you to catalogue them in some kind of meaningful way. perhaps the most aesthetically beautiful or complete in terms of functionality, but it works and All the basic features you'd expect such as cataloguing by genre, title, rating etc are there plus there's even a rudimentary online database check that can verify what your film or clip is based on keywords. This even extends to importing cover art of films and TV shows if necessary or available although you can disable this retrieval feature as it can take some time. If you want to expand it the program, you can do so via plugins that are included in the installation package although most of these plugins just extend the information retrieving functions.

It's not the best looking program in the world and it doesn't come with any outstanding features but its fast, lightweight and does what it's supposed to.

The Magic Folder 2.0 - A magical way to organise your folders

Folder management is something that can easily be improved on in Windows and The Magic Folder aims to do exactly this.

The Magic Folder is basically a utility that helps you categorize and move files. When you drag a file into the utility, it will look at the file extension and place Document files (like DOC, XLS, PPT, etc) in the Documents folder. The same principle works for other file extensions - image files like (JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, etc) are automatically placed into the Pictures folder. It's not fixed in stone however where the files you go. You can add/remove file extensions recognized by The Magic Folder and change where files go or even add your own folder locations. Alternatively, you can configure the program to prompt you for the storage location each time you move a folder.

The program does not operate entirely independently of Windows Explorer - when you click The Magic Folder you can select from the list of folders you want to access and then jump directly to that folder in Windows Explorer. Most recently, the developer has updated the folder graphics to encompass four different folder types.

If you don't have time to manage your folders or check where they've gone, The Magic Folder will ensure that you're desktop stays as tidy as possible.

If you have lots of photos, music, software and documents then it's probably a good idea to begin making backup copies, so that you have everything conveniently stored in CD or DVD. But how can you manage such a collection?

The answer is CD Archiver. This program helps you create an organized catalogue of all your recorded CD and DVD in a very easy way: insert a disc in the drive, choose or create the appropriate category and CD Archiver will read it and store its index of contents in the database. Be warned that, although almost fully automated, the whole process can take a while as the program is a bit slow indexing large discs.

Once you have your database, you can see a nice graphic that displays the distribution and percentages of file types but, what's more important, you'll be able to search for any file with the embedded search engine, without having to check discs one by one.

Visual CD 3.1 - Catalog your CD and DVD collection

When your CD collection outgrows all the available shelves of your bookcase, you know it's time for a bit of organization. And the easiest way to organize a CD collection is by creating a catalog.

Visual CD enables you to create that CD catalog in just a few simple steps. Insert the disk into the CD drive, let Visual CD index its contents and save it as a fully searchable catalog. This means that you can later on explore, search and find files that are saved on CD even if the physical disc is not in the drive.

Visual CD doesn't work only with CD: it also supports DVD, floppy disks, removable hard drives and even folders in your system hard drive. What strikes me is the fact that each drive you explore must be saved as a new catalog, whereas other similar tools save explored drives as categories inside one single catalog.

The program features also very interesting advanced functions such as a duplicate files finder, a file splitter, a photo renaming tool, a playlist generator and a thumbnail maker, among others.

Visual CD lets you save the contents of your CD and DVD in separate catalogs so that you can browse and search your collection without having to insert each disk one by one

MovieManager 2.03 - Movie managed with IMDB integration

If you're a big movie fan then you'll probably have a ton of DivX files that need cataloguing and organising.

MovieManager can be used to lookup information on the Internet and locate and catalogue your movies for you. It makes organising and finding your movies much easier and features Internet Movie Database (IMDB) integration to ensure that your films are updated with the latest info. The program stores everything from cast members to production credit details including when it and where it was made.

It's also very flexible in that it can accept pretty much any kind of multimedia file as it scans your drive. It can then list and organise films based on genre, actors and other specialist criteria. If the data is wrong or you need more, it provides direct links for each film in the IMDB. You can even generate links from the database to the films on your hard drive so all you have to do is find and click the film to watch it. The problem with this is that if you constantly move your film files to external storage devices, the links get quickly out of date so it's a good idea to use just one drive and keep them all in there if you're going to use MovieManager.

A powerful way to organise films that make your collection look great and helps you learn more about your favourite films

Is your movie collection so large that you can hardly manage it? Then it's time to use Movienizer, a handy tool that helps you organize your personal movie database in a very easy way.

In fact, Movienizer supports multiple databases, so each member of the family can keep track of their own movies. Information is downloaded from several cinema websites on the Internet, which can sometimes take a while. This means that you don't have to type in anything, but at the same time the program allows you to edit any detail if you want to. Surprisingly, Movienizer kept on showing an update reminder every time we added new movies during our test, which is strange because we were testing the latest version.

Each entry has a very detailed page with all kinds of data about the movie: title, director, cast, plot summary, even pictures. The whole database can be searched on any of these topics. Also, Movienizer includes a basic embedded media player to watch videos and a loan manager, so that you don't lose track of movies borrowed by friends.

Have a better organized and much more complete movie database with Movienizer.

Soundbase was created to fill a gap in the large amount of free and commercial mp3 players. It doesn't pretend to have the ultimate MP3 or audio solution, but it will most likely fit somewhere into your MP3 playing experience. As a player, as a tag editor or as an organizer. It will always give you a quick way of doing common tasks.

Soundbase uses the windows subsystem that compresses and uncompresses audio files, the Audio Compression Manager (ACM). By using this windows subsystem the player does not require any additional DLLs or drivers, and as such a basic install of Soundbase will take less then 2mb (5mb if you install the 60 basic skins too). Windows itself supports the most common formats (MP3 , WAV, WMA). You might need to read the help section on installing more sophisticated formats (APE, FLAC, Ogg) to enable playback for those files. The Help section provides you with links to free (ACM) codecs packs and will give you information on how to best install the different codec packs and the teams personal preferences on quality and performance of these codec packs.

You can skin Soundbase, organize your music to different locations, edit tag information, search, filter, create playlists. Soundbase doesn't use any registry entries but stores all in one ini file, it is completely anonymous, it can run from any location with limited user access rights, and much more.

iTunes is, for many reasons, the most popular music organizer. But that doesn’t' mean you can't use alternate cataloguers to manage your ever growing MP3 collection.

One of those alternatives is Jukes, a full featured music manager with which you can bring some organization to your chaotic MP3 library – especially if it's already too big to be manually managed. The program can automatically add all the albums in your collection by simply selecting your music folder. No need to type in any data!

Jukes displays very detailed information about each track and album, including album art. You can search the database using filters, see statistics about your music collection and even generate a report with a list of all your songs The program also features an embedded player, although we could say this is not its main strength – it ended up freezing the whole application during our tests.

If you'd like to test something different to iTunes, you may as well give Jukes a go. Though not as powerful, it's still a handy, full featured music manager.

TV Series Manager 0.9.1 - Organize your collection of TV series

The thrill of being left with a cliff-hanger at the end of a show and having to wait a week to find out what happens in the next episode, is something that's disappearing from modern TV culture. There are plenty of people these days who boast entire collections of series on DVD or in digital format on their computer who never have such problems.

If you're one of these people who likes to hoard dozens of episodes of Lost, House, 24, Heroes, Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, etc. then it might be worth checking out TV Series Manager to help you stay on top of your viewing. The database app can add the series you want, including which seasons and chapters you have, along with a raft of other data such as gender, date of first broadcast, actors, crew, etc.

One neat feature is that if you have a particular episode on your computer, you can set up a link to it in the program information section, which when clicked, will launch the video in your default media player.

Unfortunately the app isn't particularly well designed and it'll take you a bit of time to work your way around the interface. The omission of a right-click menu is a cardinal sin in programs like this and means you need to waste time wading through options in the main menu at the top.

However, if you're the sort of person who can't function without your favourite TV show then TV Series Manager can help you keep on top of your viewing schedule.

BookDB 2.1.101 - Enter all your books with author, category, publisher etc

With BookDB you can enter all your books with author, category, publisher etc and print them out in a variety of formats. Why would you need such a thing? Well, if you're always going to book sales and buying bargains only to get home and find you've doubled up, take a printout with you! BookDB has a super-condensed print mode so you'll need a magnifying glass, but at least it'll save a tree or two.

BookDB also has lending library features. With them, you can add borrowers, loan out books, add multiple copies and so on. If you'd like to test these new features, just create a blank file called 'library.txt' in the same folder as BookDB2.exe and restart the program.

Flickz 2.7.0.1 - The compendious DVD movie organizer

Flickz is an ideal solution for keeping track of your DVD movie library. The main aims in designing Flickz were speed, compactness and linkage to other data sources. Whereas many other movie organiser programs that are widely available allow you to record extremely detailed information about every aspect of your DVD collection Flickz, by contrast, stores only a modest but important sub-set of the total amount of information available.

The real power of Flickz lies in it's unique Display Filter search facility and the in-depth hyperlinked cross-referencing built into the compendious HTML web pages that are generated by the program. These pages not only form the basis of a self-contained personalised web site, but also serve as a research springboard into The Internet Movie Database via a movie title or cast member link.

Flickz also creates a corresponding sub-set of web pages that are optimised for viewing on a PDA type hand-held device. As well as the facility to export the details as text, there is also a comprehensive backup and restore facility to ensure that your data is always safe and sound.

Entering a new title is simplicity itself, since all necessary details, including a thumbnail image and plot summary are automatically imported from The Internet Movie Database. This does, of course, assume that you have a working internet connection, preferably broadband. In fact without such a connection, Flickz will not be of much benefit to you!
