This popular customization program allows you to add skins, toolbars, and interfaces to fine tune your computer. While the trial version of Window Blinds offers a restricted number of skins, you can easily choose from the thousands available from wincustomize.com and Deviant Art, which load directly into WindowBlinds. The program barely takes any space in your hard drive and loads new themes or skins rather quickly. It is quick to install and very stable. Window Blinds also gives you a preview shot of what the design would look like.

The trial version is a bit limited as it does not allow you to use the in-depth SkinStudio, with which you can normally customize your skins by changing color, size, and background. If you’re feeling particularly creative, you can also create your own from scratch. Thanks to the new blurred glass effect you can make pretty original skins. We also found it quite easy to handle animations in the skins you created.

Deskspace (previously known as Yod'm 3D) allows you to use multiple virtual desktops and change between them with a fashionable 3D effect in the shape of a cube.

By default, the rotation of the cube is done with Ctrl+Shift and the arrow keys: left and right to move from one desktop to another, and up and down to zoom in and out. However, you can also change between desktops with Ctrl+Shift and the mouse, plus zooming with the mouse wheel.

You can have different desktop images and applications on each desktop. The 3D effect looks really nice and it doesn't use much system resources.

Dear Windows users, you have always had to suffer from Mac users' statements regarding the superiority of their system stability, functionalities and graphic design. For the latter it wasn't really possible to counteract anything, until now. The day of revenge is arrived, or it's nearly here at least.

With CubeDesktop you can have 6 independent desktops always available, which is useful, but the coolest thing is that to change from one to the other you have a very well designed full screen 3D cube to rotate. If you prefer, you can also choose a 3D flip or a 3D carousel menu. They all present the different desktop with the applications you may have opened and the background image you have. Linux users may argue that they already had this utility many years ago but first of all Linux is not normal-user friendly (ok, now Ubuntu has made things a bit easier) and it wasn't anyway so graphically pleasant and so fast to load...was it?

The downside of this application is that it uses nearly 50Mb of your RAM and it requires a powerful PC to run smoothly. Someone may also ask himself why one would want to use 6 desktops. I have enough mess with one.

I'm sure purists will say it's an unnecessary waste of resources, but if you like the possibility of having different desktops always available and you are a bit envious of Mac graphics, take your revenge now.

Shock 4Way 3D installs a Windows management system similar to Windows Vista or Aqua Macintosh.

When you activate the button of the program in the system tray it launches a three-dimensional vision of four desks. They can be ordered as faces of a cube, as a tapestry with all the desks in the same light or as a succession of them arranged in a row. Shock 4Way 3D has a system of keystrokes to change the view and move from one desktop to another with ease.

The combinations can be customized, but by default they are: Ctrl + Alt + `: Changes to the active window; Ctrl + Alt +1: Changes to the first screen; Ctrl + Alt +2: Changes to the second screen; Ctrl + Alt +3: Changes to the third screen and Ctrl + Alt +4: Changes to the fourth screen.

VirtuaWin is a virtual desktop manager for the Windows which lets you organize applications over several virtual desktops (also called 'workspaces'). You can create up to 20 desktops which you can chop and change to using desktop shortcuts - just hold down the Windows key and use the cursor keys. This application can be taken anywhere on a USB stick so it's useful for those that don't have a laptop or don't have enough disk space to install the original program. Unfortunately, it seems that this portable version has a few bugs, most annoying of which is the gaps that sometimes appear in the taskbar when you change desktops. The developers say this is caused by a bug in the 'Group similar taskbar buttons' feature of the Windows taskbar which cannot always correctly handle the large number of window state changes that occur during desktop change. However, it can be remedied by disabling the taskbar option although this is quite a drastic measure to take to ensure this program works properly.

There is no magic. There are two Windows API functions that make goScreen possible: ShowWindow and GetWindowText. So, as long as Microsoft supports this sort of interprocess communication, goScreen will work. When you go from one screen page to another, goScreen just hides all visible windows on the previous page and shows ones on the next.

Hiding and showing a window is a legal operation and all applications should react properly - for example, redraw itself properly. It is one of the major requirements in developing for Microsoft® Windows. Of course, there is no guaranty of how fast they will respond. Here I depend on them - if they are slow, please do not blame me. Also this explains sometimes bizarre behavior of other applications - they might call ShowWindow themselves, or not call it when it would be nice to do so.

GoScreen does not monitor Windows shell activity - this would require installing Windows hooks, which I believe is unsafe. For example, when one double clicks a file in Windows Explorer, shell finds in the registry what application can open this file, starts this application and commands it to open the file. GoScreen is not involved in this scenario.

GoScreen has no initiative. It can do many things, but only when you command it to do so. That is, as long as you do not touch goScreen, it does not touch your system.
