This is a really good application. It's well organized, easy to use and makes reading on the iPhone as comfortable as possible on such a small screen.

Downloading books couldn't be easier - you can search for titles directly, or browse the various libraries in Stanza, and then download what you want. Books are automatically added to your library, which can be viewed by Author, Title or Groups. Turn the iPhone around and you get an iTunes like 3D library to browse.

The important part, obviously is the reading itself, and Stanza performs excellently. There are lots of settings to play with, but in general, you can pinch the screen to increase and decrease font size and save the setting you like, and sliding a finger up and down the page controls the brightness.

There is also a generous collection of themes for reading, so you can find a set up you're most comfortable with. Turning pages and navigating around books is also really easy and most importantly - fast.

Reading on an iPhone was never going to be perfect, but Stanza does about the best job imaginable.

There is a small selection of books pre-installed with MegaReader, and you can download and add more to your collection from a range of sources, including Feedbooks, Project Gutenburg and the Internet Archive.

You can browse lists of the books installed on MegaReader by title, author, or recently read. Unfortunately there's no search tool, which is annoying since the lists can be quite cluttered and hard to sift through.

The most innovative feature of MegaReader that sets it apart from the likes of iBooks, Kindle and Google Books, is its unique Heads Up Display option. This uses the live camera view as the page background, meaning - in theory - you can safely read as you walk along the street. We have to point out that you do this at your own risk, however!

There are plenty of ways you can customize your reading experience with MegaReader. There are 19 different preset color schemes, 31 fonts, 100s of text sizes, and you can alter things such as margin width, line spacing and text justification. MegaReader allows you to read in portrait or landscape mode, and will remember your place in a book when you pick it up again.

MegaReader is a great iOS ebook reader with a dazzling array of titles and some useful features, too.

Although Reading Rainbow implies that this app is only for reading, it includes plenty of rich media with games, audio, and video to keep your kid learning and entertained for hours. While the app itself is free, there is an option to purchase a monthly subscription within the app to unlock new content.

LeVar Burton returns in this reimagining of Reading Rainbow. He provides a friendly face and voice to the video content offered by the app. There are 'video field trips' where kids can learn about different things like zoology and astronomy. If you have a subscription, new content will appear every so often.

Digital books are at the heart of Reading Rainbow and that's where it needs work. This first version doesn't include support for the iPad with Retina Display so text and menu items look crunchy. Video, on the other hand, looks just fine. Text is surprisingly small, making it difficult for kids to read. Books are interactive but only offer basic sound effects and animations.

Overall, Reading Rainbow is a good first app and has enough to get kids excited about learning but it needs more polish.

There are two free books available with the app, and samples and demos of the paid versions. Books you've downloaded appear on an iBooks-style shelf, which makes managing your collection much easier.

The books themselves are of very good quality (or at least the ones we tried were). TouchyBooks for Kids reads all of the text aloud while a musical soundtrack plays in the background.

The graphics are great and the books are full of interactive elements, encouraging children to touch certain parts of the screen to trigger animations or play sounds. Pages in TouchyBooks for Kids are turned simply by touching the left and right arrows. Each book features a button to quickly take you back to the first page.

TouchyBooks for Kids is a pretty polished app, but it could still do with some work. The catalog of books is a bit sparse at present and would benefit from the addition of more titles. A search tool and book categorization feature would also be useful.

That said, children will love TouchyBooks for Kids as it provides highly entertaining interactive storybooks.
