If you've ever been suspicious that your Oracle or MySQL database is not functioning correctly, then one way of verifying it is to test the load capacity. That's exactly what Transaction Generator does by enabling various verification tests. It basically has three main features - testing the performance, detecting bottlenecks in databases and tuning the application. It also features a few other minor tools too.

It works by using JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) to connect to the database so it will have to support JDBC to conduct the test. The program generates a load by sending a series of SQL statements to the database server which is registered as a transaction. I recommend the latter because if you're not familiar with databases, the command line will confuse you completely.

The listview is running in virtual mode, that means the data is displayed on demand. (not the entire CSV file is loaded in the listview) so CSVed can handle big files and is very fast.

In other words, you can do everything with a CSV file you wanted.

Navicat presents a clear interface to easily manage your MySQL database. You can quickly view elements like tables, stored procedures, events, queries and reports. Your data can be synchronized so it is properly updated in your database. Navicat supports all MySQL versions and lets you easily import and export your data. Similarly, Navicat makes it easy to generate and print out reports on yoru database. You can also manage mutiple users and connections.

We were a bit disappointed to find out that there is very little difference between the standard and enterprise version. The only new things that the latter offers are report building, viewing, exporting and printing. On the whole though, Navicat is a very user-friendly MySQL database manager.

For develpers, it offers a range of tools to assist database development and perform tasks such as object browsing, creating, running SQL statements and SQL scripts plus viewing and editing data. It's pretty powerful as it supports all major commercial databases including Oracle, DB2, Mimer, SQL Server, Sybase ASE, Informix and open source alternatives such as MySQL, PostgreSQL and JavaDB/Derby.

Most recently, it's been updated to include a Table Data Navigator which allows you to navigate foreign keys based on data selections. If you need something that supports multiple databases in one package, you can't go far wrong with DbVisualizer but it's severely lacking in instructional information to guide you through the database management process.

Creating databases and management software is not something that I used to relish, but these days the number of solution that make the job easier means I can build strong relational databases within a sound development environment.
