The Kaspersky PURE interface isn't very slick, but it is easy-to-use and very accessible. It's divided into 7 areas. My Computer Protection (the antivirus), My Backup and My Parental Control make up the main three, with My System Tune-Up, My Encryption, My Virtual Keyboard and My Password Manager bringing up the rear.

There is an awful lot to Kaspersky PURE, but all of it is well-explained and simple to figure out. Almost all of the features have a wizard, and there are two levels of control available, one for people who would prefer minimal interaction and another for those who want more control.

The Kaspersky PURE settings menu is ample and has some great features that make using the program a pleasure. The best of them include a gaming mode, folder encryption and some of the most comprehensive parental control elements I have ever seen.

Unfortunately, there is a price to pay for this excellence. Kaspersky PURE is extremely resource-hungry, and will all but paralyze a less powerful computer. The installation process is long and drawn-out, and the scans take a very long time. Ultimately, prospective users will need to take a long look at Kaspersky PURE before deciding if their computer - and patience - has what it takes to make the most of an excellent security program.

Installing BitDefender Internet Security takes quite a long time and requires the usual system restart. Once you’re done, BitDefender Internet Security updates the database and performs an immediate check on your system for any possible threats. The program also features a built-in firewall, parental control tools to protect your kids when browsing the web and encryption utilities.

Two strong points in Internet Security are its special Game and Laptop modes. The first one opens the firewall to prevent connection issues and disables any resource-intensive processes, while maintaining a safe, fun gaming experience. The latter temporarily tweaks security settings to prevent the antivirus from draining the computer’s battery.

Besides the app’s functionality, Internet Security features a nicely designed interface with three different views (Basic, Intermediate and Expert) so that you can make the most of BitDefender Internet Security no matter what your level of expertise is.

Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security has a number of settings that make using it more comfortable: scheduled scans, password protection and the facility to view logs are just a few examples. You'll also be able to take advantage of Trend Micro Vault (a password-protected "vault" folder) and System Tuner, which performs a scheduled computer tune-up (start-up programs, disc clean-up, etc.).

Despite covering lots of bases, Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security isn't all that impressive. In addition to a lengthy installation process and a lack of offline help, it feels like a pretty basic program, with no particularly interesting or ground-breaking features. After using Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security for a while, you can't help thinking that a hundred other security suites do exactly the same job - only better.

The main System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware privides an overview of your system’s status, letting you know if you need to scan or update virus definition, for example. On the left, you’ll be able to access the various program components, such as the scan function, real time protection, updates and your past scan results.

The Good

System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware offers you several different scan settings, such as the ability to scan the whole system, or just specific files and folders. You’ll also be able to set scan scheduling options, choosing to run the tool on certain days, or under certain conditions, such as when you are away from the computer. The configuration options for System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware – access through the top right corner - are pretty complete, and will allow you a considerable amount of control over the program’s behavior. You’ll also be able to set the program to protect your email from threats.

The Bad

That said, for a paid program, System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware seems pretty lacking. There are no interesting tools or features, and lacks some pretty standard options, such as the ability to pause scans or reduce the system resources used by the program when you are gaming. System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware is also pretty slow, and the program doesn't integrate into the context menu, making it harder to scan individual files without going into the program interface.

System Shield AntiVirus and AntiSpyware works, but in this day and age, really doesn’t offer anything special in the way of computer protection.

eScan Virus Control features real time virus Scanning including scanning of SMTP and POP3 traffic. eScan Anti-virus is a good option for those that have to remotely administer security packages - such as Network Administrators - because it features a "Management Console Lite" for deploying software licenses, remote installation, uninstalling other AntiVirus products, upgrading the product and enabling or disabling eScan monitor status.
