If you're trying to learn how to play a song on your instrument, you'll know that repeating and rerunning certain track segments is essential - in which case you might find Amazing Slow Downer a Godsend.

It's a pain to keep using the fast forward and rewind buttons so one alternative is to use Amazing Slow Downer. Amazing Slow Downer allows you to repeat any section of a music track at full speed or speeded-up/slowed-down by stretching the music by -50% to 400%. The important thing however is that it doesn't change the pitch.

However, this doesn't mean you can't change the pitch because you can. Amazing Slow Downer allows you to manually change the pitch if you wish in semi tones at full or lower speed. However, you have to actively do this yourself - Amazing Slow Downer won't do it for you which is a blessing or a pain depending on what you need it for. When CDs came along, most of the World rejoiced in their ingenuity although some lamented the loss of a big old vinyl.

Those that mourned its loss at least found solace in the fact that they could record their favorite vinyl records into digital format. However, rusty stylus needles and scratched vinyl surfaces mean that the recordings haven't always been great quality. ClickRepair is a small application that tries to help you restore the sound archived from old records (vinyl or shellac).

Note that this is not a vinyl audio capture tool however - it can only help you once you've got the audio saved to hard disk. In order to use ClickRepair, you must first capture the sound as uncompressed audio files in 16 or 24 bit format in either AIFF or WAVE format - MP3's are not supported. The program will accept either mono or stereo file formats and the maximum sample rate is 96 kHz.

The removal of hiss and crackle is a two-stage process - detection followed by repair. The program analyzes interference on the record and compensates for hiss and crackles by performing audio interpolation based on an analysis of the surrounding sound. The results are satisfactory although there's no way you could say that it removes every last imperfection. Unfortunately, it's also been developed using Java which does make it rather slow at times although this has been done in an attempt to make it a cross-platform app.

If you're looking for a cheap and easy way to remove imperfections from your beloved vinyl, ClickRepair will certainly do at least a partial job.

Power Sound Editor is one in a long line of similar audio editing programs that gives you everything you need to edit, cut and splice your music but nothing particularly original.

The program is mainly useful for those that need to add sound effects or special effects to music and sounds. It's also useful for equalising sounds although not a great deal more than that. The good aspect is that it's a very GUI based program - i.e. it presents everything in graphical form usually via icons. These graphics represent the various actions you might wish to carry out such as ripping tracks, equalising sounds and cutting tracks. For novices, the cutting and editing is particularly easy as it allows you to do everything in visual form. Ableton is known for making excellent audio software, with Ableton Live one of their star apps. This program will allow you to manage all the processes of audio production, from beat creation to adjustments, recording and live sets.

The application, which could compare to a powerful combination of sequencer and sampler, comes with a library full of instruments, MIDI and audio effects to start working with. Ableton offers two sorts of views, arrangement and session, the first being like a traditional timeline, while session lets you add and play around with effects. One thing that impressed me is that you can associate any key on your keyboard with any effect, which makes for a really intuitive track creation process.

Ableton Live includes real-time stretching and warping of audio and even video import to sync audio to video.

Although you'll definitely need some technical knowledge to use Ableton I found the application very well detailed, with the info view box on the bottom left giving clear explanations of everything. Ableton Live also comes with loads on tutorials to master the program.

Ableton is a highly flexible and powerful audio solution for music production. Fitted with a great interface, a wide library of effects and loads of help, you won't find many programs as good as this.

I'm sure that over the years you've managed to build up quite a collection of music. However, if you were born before the year 2000 then the chances are they won't all be stored in the form of perfect quality digital audio files. Vinyl, tapes and CDs were very good at the time, but given that we're all used to listening to music in crystal clarity these days, it can be quite painful to listen to these crackily old recordings.

I was also mightily impressed with the click and crackle filter, which is particularly good for cleaning up vinyl recordings.

Once you've edited your audio, you can committ it to CD using the built-in burning tool, and there are also tools for ripping and converting. If you want a program that can edit tracks for mixing and creating your own music then look elsewhere, but if you're after something that can improve the sound quality of your audio then Cool Record Edit is a powerful solution.

I must admit I'm not very fond of audio editing tools. Mixing music has never been my cup of tea, so when it comes to testing an audio editor, chances are I end up more confused than satisfied. However, this isn't the case with Audacity. To begin with, this editor is free source and supports MP3, two features which usually don't meet in this kind of application. Secondly, it's easy to master, even for newcomers. And finally, there's a wide range of filters and special effects you can apply to your music so that you easily achieve the desired effect.

Audacity doesn't stand out for its interface. At first sight one wonders if this program is really going to be that easy to use. In fact, the interface sometimes makes it really hard to work with your tracks, especially when you zoom in on them for a more comfortable editing session. Besides this, I found myself constantly right-clicking on the working area and the tracks too, waiting for some handy context menu to appear but nothing came out.

After these few first minutes struggling with the interface, it's time to begin having fun. You can open as many tracks as you want by just dragging and dropping audio files onto the program's interface. Use your mouse to select the fragment you're interested in and begin working with it. You can perform the basic editing actions (cut, copy, paste) or apply effects to it. The zoom tool helps a lot when selecting small areas, as well as the chronometers found at the bottom of the program's window. Obviously, you can use the integrated player to check how your work sounds before saving the project.

Audacity features quite a large selection of filters and effects. Each one has its own setting options to adjust it to your liking. But what I loved is the possibility to preview how the filter will look on the audio track. This preview function allows novice users to test each filter before actually using it and also configure it with great accuracy.

On the downside, Audacity doesn't have much more to offer. After a few days playing with the program, you soon grow tired of selecting audio fragments and adding effects, and you feel like you need something else. In other words, the simplicity of the program makes it easy to learn, but at the same it makes it too basic and requires a lot of creativity on the user's side to obtain ear-catching results. Anyhow, Audacity is still a perfect choice to take your first steps in the music mixing world and then perhaps move on to another more professional tool.

What's better than learning to play a musical instrument to unwind from a busy day? Although my advice would be to take an instrument and start playing it learning bit by bit, more methodical and expert users may advise you to follow a guide and practice theoretical exercises.

aGuitar Pro lets you manage your guitar or bass progress with exercises on the notes and on the accords. There are many advanced lessons you can follow and surely it can be helpful for advanced students as a reference point. The program features testing tools to sample your knowledge of the harmonic world.
Unfortunately, I don't see it as an easy tool for beginners. This is because of the way information is displayed which seems to be too technical. It would have been good to have a simple mode display for beginners so to ease things when learning and testing basic notes.

The tab reader and tab editor are also interesting as they can modify or create music sheets with text and notes of your favourite songs. It would have been good to have a function to search for songs online in free databases, but you will have to do it manually.

aGuitar Pro can be useful to study and test your knowledge of guitar theory if you are already a medium experienced player. It also includes a tab reader and editor, which ease the transcription of songs for professionals.
