SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature).

At the lowest level, SpeedFan is a hardware monitor software that can access temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can change fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your PC, thus reducing noise and power consumption.

Xpy 0.10.8 - Modify the hidden options of Microsoft Windows' installation

Do you know that when you install Windows, it leaves open a lot of vulnerable points that can be exploited by hackers or spyware.

Xpy allows you to close a lot of these vulnerable holes and make Windows considerably safer without the need to install any kind of security software. Amongst the things it can do are disable Windows "calling home", disable unnecessary services, disarm Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player and remove Windows Messenger. You can instantly improve your privacy and security by running it and removing certain unneeded components, speed up the performance of your system. The problem however is that it can close vital components that are needed for Windows to update itself. When you are presented with a list of components to remove or close-off, be very careful what you select as there is no real guide as to what each one corresponds to. The reason for this is that XPY is written and compiled using NSIS which do often get picked up as spyware by programs such as AdAware. The developers have assured that the program does not install any kind of malware and they are working to resolve this problem

A very simple way to close security holes and threats on Windows but be careful what you remove or close down.

Process Explorer shows you information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.

The Process Explorer display consists of two sub-windows. The top window always shows a list of the currently active processes, including the names of their owning accounts, whereas the information displayed in the bottom window depends on the mode that Process Explorer is in: if it is in handle mode you’ll see the handles that the process selected in the top window has opened; if Process Explorer is in DLL mode you’ll see the DLLs and memory-mapped files that the process has loaded. Process Explorer also has a powerful search capability that will quickly show you which processes have particular handles opened or DLLs loaded.

The unique capabilities of Process Explorer make it useful for tracking down DLL-version problems or handle leaks, and provide insight into the way Windows and applications work.

How many times have you walked up to a system in your office and needed to click through several diagnostic windows to remind yourself of important aspects of its configuration, such as its name, IP address, or operating system version? If you manage multiple computers you probably need BGInfo.

It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more. You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen. Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.

The first thing that strikes you is the sheer number of features this program has. It's absolutely ram packed with options that will keep you tweaking and fiddling with Windows Vista until the cows come home. The program features a "My Tweaker Tool" which allows you to create your own tweaker customized exactly how you want it. You can add, edit and delete DVD and CD drive names and labels, and the program now features full support for tweaking and optimizing Firefox.

It also supports Internet Explorer with the additional bonus that you can delete specific IE URLs.
Process Lasso 3.04 - Improve system responsiveness and stability in high load situations

One of most common reasons for your PC slowing down is processes that are hogging your system and taking all your CPU.

Process Lasso aims to solve this problem by reducing the priority of those processes that are not important and returned to a responsive level. It also works with multiple processes that are causing a problem so it can deal with more than one program at once. If you think that the program is prioritising the wrong processes, then you can define default processes that you want to be controlled or kept an eye on. Process Lasso also displays graphs and other graphical represeantations to show you which processes are requiring the most CPU usage. You can blacklist those processes that are showing rather high graph readings or that are clearly taking up more CPU usage than they deserve. Although the program requires no experience, it does offer advanced settings and twesking options to make sure that it only blocks those processes that are specified or targeted by yourself. Fortunately, the program itself is very low on resources so it will not add to your CPU hogging problems.

A very useful process monitor than will ensure your CPU only dedicates itself to those programs that really need it.

Belarc Advisor 7.2.24.6 - Get detailed info on your hardware and software

Ever needed to get detailed information about your PC but felt too lazy to look around for the specifications? Well, don’t bother yourself browsing the net or leafing through your PC’s instruction manual; set up a system analysis application like Belarc Advisor instead. This program will profile your PC, giving you thorough information on every aspect of your machine.

Installing the application only takes a few seconds and it will analyze your PC right away. Make sure you are connected to Internet, as Belarc Advisor only works inside a browser window. It displays not only your hardware specs like controllers, bus adapters or the capacity of your processor but also software versions and licenses. Belarc Advisor also provides you with a list of all missing and installed Microsoft 'hotfixes' with a direct link to the corresponding update page.

Belarc Advisor also carries out a CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmark of your PC according to elements such as event log policies, security options and users rights. For each category, Belarc will give you a grade out of 10, with elements you comply with given a green check and those you fail given a red cross. If you click on a particular element you will be taken to a suggestions page. For example, click on “password age” and a new tab will open up with information on how and why to change your password regularly. We recommend looking over Belarc Advisor’s suggestions for any element in the benchmark that your PC might have failed. Try implementing their tips and do the benchmark test again to see if your PC gets a better score.

While the amount of information can easily overwhelm new users, Belarc Advisor is an excellent and speedy solution to get detailed specs on your PC. Providing details on your hardware and software and featuring a thorough benchmarking test, Belarc Advisor should come in handy when upgrading your PC or looking for any vulnerability to patch.

There are many reasons why you wouldn't want your operating system connect to Microsoft's server, be it for practical reasons or pure idealism. Based on the source-code of the award-winning Xpy, Vispa allows you to easily tweak your Windows Vista for better privacy and security, even system performance. Do a few clicks rather than finding the write registry keys or program settings.

The only recommendation I can give is not applying settings without vague knowledge of what you're doing. Not every setting is desired in every environment. Vispa is no tool for beginners, just a more convenient way of tweaking your operating system.

Thoosje Vista Tweaker 2.0 - Tweak every nook and cranny of Vista

It was only a matter of time until Vista slowed down enough for it to need tweakers to keep it running at a decent speed again.

Thoosje Vista Tweaker is a free "professional" tweaking tool that's there to fill that gap and allows you to optimize various default settings in Vista. With around 60 different tweaks, it's certainly not short of tweaking options although how many of these really make a difference is debatable. However, you can go tweak crazy because the program performs a brief backup of your current settings in case the tweaks affect your system adversely.

The interface is extremely attractive and easy to use. A menu down the left side gives you options on which part of your system you want to optimize such as Internet Explorer, System UI or General Performance. However, if you don't want to go through all of these separately, you can just perform all tweaks in one go. There's nothing more to it than that - just perform your initial backup, let it run and see if it's made any difference.

Note that some of the tweaks aren't really "tweaks" at all in the strict sense - they are more like shortcuts to things such as Vista system settings that normally, you may not have used or find difficult to access

A well designed tweaker with many optimization options and should make at least some difference to the performance of Vista.

Safarp 0.5 - Substitute for the Windows Add/Remove Programs control panel

One thing that really annoys me about Windows is the limited Add-Remove software tool which seems both cumbersome and often ineffective.

It takes ages to show you what programs are installed and even when it does, it doesn't show you everything that should be on there anyway. Safarp however is a much better lightweight alternative that makes uninstalling and removing programs much simpler. It displays a list of all the installed programs on your PC and allows you to uninstall and repair them as you would with Windows.

However, much more than this, it also offers a search tool (something desperately missing from Windows) which allows you to search through installed programs and identify a specific one that you'd like to remove or repair. This saves so much time when you've got lots of programs installed. However, it's ineffective when the program installed is under a different name - say it's prefaced by the name of the developer or something - although it's better than nothing.

What's also great is that it can automatically detect entries that are obsolete or no longer on your system and remove them from your programs list if the original unstaller failed to do so. However, be very careful what you remove - some entries may seem erroneous but they can perform vital functions and so it's always best to Google or double check what they are before you remove them.

If you're frustrated with Windows Add/Remove interface, then you'll find Safarp a breath of fresh air.

When it comes to system maintenance, why have a separate tool for each element when you can have everything you need in Mz Ultimate Tweaker?

This amazing toolbox features an impressive selection of tweaks and apps with which you can dramatically improve your system's performance with the minimum risk. It's very easy to use – even for the not-so-experts. What's more, it creates a backup copy of your system right before changing anything, so that you always have a way back in case something goes terribly wrong.

The program's interface is divided into two main sections: Tweaks and Useful tools. The first one contains a bunch of system tweaks you can apply in different areas such as general performance, services, visual appearance or your Internet connection. They're all neatly organized in categories on the left-side pane.

The Useful tools category includes a selection of tools that have been especially developed for certain maintenance tasks. You'll find a CPU accelerator, a RAM booster, a start-up manager and a registry optimizer, among others. Any changes you make are automatically applied, but you need to restart the computer in order for them to take effect.

Mz Ultimate Tweaker is probably one of the most complete tookits you can find to keep your computer in perfect shape in an easy way and with the minimum effort.

If you're a hardcore computer user you probably work with quite a few apps opened at the same time, making the most of your system resources.

Unfortunately these resources are not unlimited and there comes a point when the system memory simply can't stretch anymore. This is when you need a program like MKN MemoryMonitor, which not only controls the way your system manages memory, but also lets you optimize it by freeing up a fixed percentage.

The program keeps track of both physical memory and paged memory, displaying a colorful animated graph that shows memory usage in real time, as well as some more specific details about each type of memory. This information is not only available in the program's interface, but also in a handy pop-up window that opens when you hover your mouse over the program's icon in the system tray.

Tracking memory management is not the only task for MKN MemoryMonitor though. You can also free up memory whenever you need it with just a mouse click. You can customize the percentage of memory to be freed, but unfortunately this process must be done manually.

MKN MemoryMonitor controls your system's memory management and also lets you free memory up when necessary, tough you must do it manually.

PC Wizard 2008 1.85 - Advanced system information program

A system analyzer is often overlooked as the toy of PC modding fanatics, but the reality is that these applications are very effective at dissecting your PC and giving you the hard truth about its performance. PC Wizard aims to explore the insides of your system and give you the complete low down on its strengths and weaknesses.

Once you launch PC Wizard you’ll notice it takes some time to detect all the hardware installed on your PC. Use the left side of the interface to navigate through the different categories. PC Wizard reveals all the basic details of your hardware, like ports, drivers and processors, but you’ll soon realize there’s much more to it, like analyzing system files or investigating the configuration of elements such as your Internet connection or your Control Panel. Over-sized icons make it fairly obvious what you can inspect, however we would have appreciated an explorer type window to navigate through components and select exactly what to analyze.

The core of any self-respecting system analyzer is the benchmarking tool and that is where PC Wizard excels. The application lets you inspect everything from processors to cache, RAM and multimedia like DirectX, MP3 compression and video. Benchmarks provide the results as a list of information or via comprehensible graphs. These will show you straight away where you’re PC stands and the “compare with” button will let you measure your processor up against well known models. We have to warn beginners though that the information is fairly technical and will be more relevant to experienced users. Just for fun, test out the video benchmark to obtain a swarm of multicoloured balls and lines all over your screen.

That’s the only bit of excitement you’ll get with this application though. PC Wizard is not here for fun it's here to be effective. The detailed information and thorough benchmarking tests give you reliable data on all the characteristics and components of your PC. The complexity of this type of application means beginners are best kept away from it altogether, however advanced users will revel in the wealth of knowledge it will uncover on their PC’s performances.

HWMonitor 1.10 - Full control over your PC's power stats

It's not only the world that's getting warmer - PC's, by virtue of the fact that they are becoming increasingly more powerful, are literally warming up too.

Most good PCs and laptops have a fan which automatically controls overheating and regulates temperature but this is not always 100% reliable, especially when you've got lots of external devices connected. The good thing about HWMonitor is that it gives you an instant overview of your PC's vital power and heat stats while at the same time, remaining very light and not adding to the problem. In fact, it doesn't require any installation at all and can be run simply from the .EXE file. The program does not copy any files into the directory or edit the registry in any way. The program probably shows you far more stats that it needs to in reality - I mean, who really needs to know the temperature of their graphics card? It would have been useful if the program had included some kind of basic and advanced view to prevent you getting overwhelmed with data but at least the info is there if you really need it.

If you're worried that you're fan is not doing it's job properly or your PC is getting disconcertingly hot, then HWMonitor is the ultimate monitoring tool.
