PC Tools Disk Suite - All-in-one hard drive optimization, defrag, repair and partition app

PC Tools Disk Suite attempts to cover all possible angles when it comes to hard drive management.

PC Tools Disk Suite offers all in one hard drive management that integrates disk optimization, a cleanup tool, a defrag utility and even a partitioning and backup tool in one well presented and easy to use pack. Like most PC Tools products, the interface is the same as used across the entire line of products and clearly presents the options available to you.

As is to be expected, the cleanup and optimize feature of PC Tools Disk Suite aims to reduce unnecessary files and indicates how much free disk space it's recovered for you at any one time. The defrag tool reorganizes files on your disk and should speed up your system and it supports both FAT and NTFS drives. It's nice that you can select whether to defrag quickly or slowly in PC Tools Disk Suite although the fast defrag doesn't seem to make much difference at all. On the other hand, the long defrag does take a while and you¡'d be best to use it overnight.

The PC Tools Disk Suite Backup feature allows you select which files you want to backup regularly either manually or via scheduler and finally the Partition feature allows you to create, merge, split, resize, delete, copy, and move partitions. However, you'd be highly advised to backup all your data using the total backup option on PC Tools Disk Suite as disk partitions can result in lost or corrupted data very easily if you don't know what you are doing.

PC Tools Disk Suite is an incredibly comprehensive suite that covers all the major areas you need to keep your PC in tip top condition.

Sometimes it's handy to have an all in one tool that does everything from cleaning the registry to system monitoring rather than several different apps. This is not only more likely to work properly and not conflict but it's also lighter on your RAM.

Desktop Maestro is an all-in-one cleaning and monitoring application that integrates registry cleaning, system monitoring and privacy cleaning. The developers PC Tools are well known for Registry Mechanic and Desktop Maestro combines the best of this tool with it's other flagship product, Privacy Guardian.

Desktop Maestro features the same clean and easy to administer interface that you get with most PC Tools products. Desktop Maestro will scan your entire registry for any invalid entries and clearly lists the registry errors found so you can choose to selectively clean each item or automatically repair all errors. It does of course make a backup before making any changes. The Privacy Guardian basically clears any trace of surfing habits and document use from your system and finally Desktop Maestro can also provide optimization and performance tweaks that can improve efficiency in system usage, processes, CPU, memory and disk space.

Desktop Maestro is a quality all in one product that removes the need to have a separate registry cleaner, privacy cleaner and optimiser in one.

When you have finished, Disk Doctors Linux Data Recovery will be able to tell you how much of the data is genuinely recoverable and how much of it is lost for good. Disk Doctors Linux Data Recovery is extremely fast due to the "TurboScan" engine that it uses so you don't have to wait long for it to go through the motions.

For Linux users, Disk Doctors Linux Data Recovery is a rare utility that allows you to salvage whatever remains of your data when you think that all is lost.

Disk Doctors File Shredder 1.0.0 - Shred files without leaving a trace

The problem with Windows is that it never properly deletes files when you think they've been deleted - it often leaves behind
traces that can be recovered by anyone in the know.

The problem is that the allocation area or the index of the file system (FAT or NTFS) marks the area used by the deleted file as
empty but the actual raw contents of the files are always present even if the file has been deleted. Disk Doctors File Shredder
ensures that anything that you've deleted definitely remains deleted no matter what Windows may have done with the files.

Disk Doctors File Shredder helps you to shred files and folders from your Windows drive, shredding the deleted data and leaving
no traces of sensitive critical data. Disk Doctors File Shredder is very easy to run and use via a hierarchical explorer which
displays which files and folders are available to shred. Those that you want to shred, simply add them to the Disk Doctors File
Shredder “shredding zone” and you have 9 options over exactly how shredded you want the files to be processed by Disk
Doctors File Shredder differing in thoroughness and time it takes. The developers claim that the shredding standards of Disk
Doctors File Shredder reach those of the US Department of Defence although this is obviously impossible to verify.

Disk Doctors File Shredder is a very secure way to make sure that anything you delete is definitely deleted and remains
so.

Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer 1.0.0 - Secure deletion of data on your hard drive

Disk wiping or hard drive clearing can be necessary for a number of reasons such as to install a new operating system or to simply maintain your privacy.

Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer is an ultra effective solution which helps you remove every last shred of data on your hard drive. The reason is that many deletion tools only delete the file structure from your hard drive so you can't see it anymore but in effect, it still exists. Data recovery software can therefore often recover it if needed which is why it's not a particularly safe way of deleting data. Note that Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer aims to eliminate any risk of file recovery so use it with care.

Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer eliminates data files at the heart of directories and shreds data beyond recovery. Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer offers 9 types of disk wiping which include Fast Zero Overwrite (for quick deletes) and Random Overwrite (which scrubs out data repeatedly to ensure it's gone). Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer also offers a series of ultra secure deletions such as "US Navy" and "US Department of Defense" deletion methods which basically emulate those used by such organizations.

Disk Doctors Data Sanitizer is a very secure way to delete data from your drive and ensure that data recovery software doesn't discover anything.

HDClone Free Edition 3.6.2 - Clone disk drives in an instant

HDClone copies the entire contents of hard disks and other IDE/ATA, SATA/eSATA, SCSI, USB, and Firewire media on a physical level.

This even allows for the smooth creation of backups or copies of complete operating system installations. In combination with the special 'SafeRescue' mode of HDClone, this technique is also perfect for rescuing data in case of defective hard disks.

Furthermore, HDClone works independent of a partition layout, file system and operating system (i.e. it works with FAT, FAT32, NTFS, etc.). Thus, it also works with proprietary data formats which could not be accessed otherwise. Besides copying complete drives, it is also possible to apply it to certain partitions only.

SpaceObServer 3.3.2 - Manage your hard drive efficiently

Even though external hard drive sizes are increasing at a rapid rate, you can always find more space on your drive if you just look hard enough.

SpaceObServer is a sophisticated and effective hard disk space manager which scans directory trees using a background service, and stores their structure, sizes and properties in an SQL database. Why would you want to do this? Well, for one, it automatically allows you to see - in pie chart form - what's taking up most space on your hard drive at any one time. In addition, if you're interested in tracking your hard disk usage across several months or a long time period, then it allows you to do so instantly. For Windows users, it's very effective because it presents the data in a very easy Explorer style format - in 3D bar, pie charts and tree maps. The good thing is you can see at a glance which files are obsolete and which files are essential so that when it comes to cleaning up your drive, you don't get rid of anything important. It's surprising, using this program, how many files you'll find that are simply taking up space and are absolutely useless.

Easy to use and very effective, SapceObserver is an excellent app that will have your hard drive gleaming again in no time.

If you have a lot of external disk drives attached to your PC via USB, then it can be easy to lose track of how much space you've got available on each.

One way round this is to use DiskSizes which shows at a glance, status information about your computer's drives and most importantly, how much space is left on them. The additional information it provides includes cluster sizes and the total size of each drive.

However, the utility goes beyond that also measuring a folder's disk use and displaying the number of folders, files and sum of the file sizes. This is very useful if you're trying to count how many folders are on a drive which is something that Windows doesn't normally tell you in Explorer. This is also useful if you are performing backups and are not sure when you did your last one - more folders than on your backup drive will indicate that you've definitely got remaining folders to backup.

It's a shame it doesn't display information in graphical form but as a simple hard disk space monitor, DiskSizes does a solid job.

Image for Windows is an affordable, reliable drive image backup and restore utility that creates and restores snapshot images of entire partitions or volumes. The backups can be saved to a set of files on a local or network drive, or directly to most CD or DVD drives (which will create a bootable restore disc). When needed, you can simply restore the snapshot image and the partition or volume will be back as it was before.

Using the free PHYLock add-on utility, you can continue to use your computer while the backup is locked to a point-in-time. This eliminates the inconsistencies typically experienced while backing up a partition that is in use.

MacDrive has long been the standard for Windows users to easily and seamlessly open, edit and save files from Mac-formatted disks, but now we are taking things a step further. MacDrive 6 for Windows enables PC users to open, edit, and save files on Mac disks (HFS/HFS+). You can even format Mac disks and burn Mac CDs and DVDs.

MacDrive 6 also expands on the ability to format Mac disks (HFS/HFS+) by enabling you to partition your hard drives with the MacDrive Disk Manager. What's more, MacDrive protects your partitions from harm by Windows disk tools and warns you if your drives were not properly shut down.

Along with the ability to burn and partition, all the power MacDrive has added to your Windows PC is even better in MacDrive 6. We have dramatically increased the speed when dealing with large files sets, we have improved and simplified the control panel and we have expanded support for various Mac files types.

GFileStorage Beta - Use Gmail as a virtual storage device

Gmail is for me, clearly the best e-mail client I've ever used and anything that extends it's functionality is fine by me.

That's why I was more than impressed by GFileStorage which uses your Gmail account to transfer and store files on Google servers. As long as you've got a Gmail account, you can use it. Here is the other great thing - the program offers very strong encryption options so that you can be sure that your data is safe from prying eyes. Whatsmore, there's no limit on file size. You can upload any file size as long as your Gmail account has space. At the moment, Gmail offers about 7GB of storage space which is more than enough for most people's e-mail needs although if you want to store videos and music, you may be a little disappointed. The big question however is, how fast is it? Well, you'll probably find that it depends on many things including your own connection. GFileStorage uploads and downloads as fast as Gmail's SMTP (Upload) and IMAP (Download) servers permit. The developers claim that GFileStorage has minimal overhead with downloads, but uploads will sometimes incur an extra 2 seconds to update. The result sometimes is some painfully slow uploads but if you're not in a hurry then it's a brilliant utility.

Any Gmail user with space and time on their hands should give GFileStoarage a whirl.

If you've ever suffered from data loss or are upgrading your hard drive, then you need someway to backup and protect your data.

EaseUs Disk Copy is a useful tool for all those that need to backup, clone, or upgrade their small hard drive to something bigger or simply copy the contents of your hard drive. The Copy utility allows you to create images of huge hard drives by slowly scanning it and looking for potential read errors. This process takes quite a while because it has to inspect your drive in great detail so make sure you've got plenty of time spare or leave it running overnight. The program will warn you when it detects potential read errors that could start to damage Windows in the long term. You can perform various types of copy - copy all of your hard drive, a partition clone or a a sector by sector copy. The program has been recently updated to support the latest drives including IDE, SATAI, SATAII, SCSI, Firewire(IEEE1394) and USB drives, dynamic disks and it can help you with boot problems by showing you how to boot from a CD ROM. The GUI is very easy to use although as mentioned, it can be very slow at scanning and copying but at least you know it's doing a thorough job.

A useful backup and copy solution that's easy to use although not the fastest utility on the market.

FlexKit Express 1.8.12 Beta - All-in-one tool to optimize disk management

Keeping your hard disk in good shape is not an easy task. Fortunately we can count on applications like FlexKit, a package of tools which have been specially designed to analyze, optimize and clean your hard drive in a few easy steps.

This kit consists of five different utilities: FlexCls, FlexSize, FlexDup, FlexHash and FlexSig, Each one of them is devoted to a particular task, namely file categorization, space arrangement analysis, duplicate file search, signature generation for files and integrity check for files and directories. All five tools share the same interface and are very easy to use: simply select the one you'd like to run in the window's bottom right corner. Three of them (FlexCls, FlexSize and FlexDup) will need to perform an analysis before showing any results. This analysis must be repeated three times for each one of them, and in the case of FlexDup, it takes quite a long time.

On the upside, analysis results can be really helpful to optimize your disk structure, find out which directories are eating up too much disk space and free a bunch of megabytes by deleting useless duplicate files. Plus, they can be exported to a TXT, CSV or HTML report.

A great collection of tools to improve your system's general performance.

HDClone 3.2.9 - Creating identical 1:1 copies of hard disks and other media

HDClone copies the complete contents of hard disks and other IDE/ATA/SATA, SCSI, and USB media on a physical level. This allows you to create backups or copies of complete operating system installations smoothly. In combination with the special 'SafeRescue' mode, this technique is also perfect for rescuing data in case of defective hard disks.

Furthermore, HDClone works independently of partition layout, file system and operating system. Thus, it also works with proprietary data formats which could not be accessed otherwise. Besides copying complete drives, it is also possible to apply it to certain partitions only.

GMail Drive shell extension 1.0.12 - Convert your Gmail into a hard drive

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Gmail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium. Given the amount of space the service allocates to you, this can prove to be a very valuable tool.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.

Ever since Google started to offer users a Gmail e-mail account, which includes storage space of 2000 megabytes, you have had plenty of storage space but not a lot to fill it up with. With GMail Drive you can copy files to your Gmail account and retrieve them again.

When you create a new file using GMail Drive, it generates an e-mail and posts it to your account. The e-mail appears in your normal Inbox folder, and the file is attached as an e-mail attachment. GMail Drive periodically checks your mail account (using the Gmail search function) to see if new files have arrived and to rebuild the directory structures. But basically GMail Drive acts as any other hard-drive installed on your computer.
You can copy files to and from the GMail Drive folder simply by using drag'n'drop like you're used to with the normal Explorer folders.

Because the Gmail files will clutter up your Inbox folder, you may wish to create a filter in Gmail to automatically move the files (prefixed with the GMAILFS letters in the subject) to your archived mail folder.

Please note that GMail Drive is still an experimental tool. There's still a number of limitations of the file-system (such as total filename size must be less than 40 characters). Since the tool hooks up with the free Gmail Service provided by Google, changes in the Gmail system may break the tool's ability to function. I cannot guarantee that files stored in this manner will be accessible in the future.

CryptoExpert 2007 Lite 7.1.0 - Create virtual disk drives with a high level of encryption

CryptoExpert creates encrypted virtual disks and these disks are visible as usual disks with drive letters (for example, G:, H:, Z:, i.e. with any drive letter that is not used by other system devices).

The data stored on a CryptoExpert disk is stored in the container file. A container is a file, so it is possible to back up a container, move or copy it to another disk (CD-ROM or network, for instance) and continue to access your encrypted data using CryptoExpert.

Any free drive letter (or choosen letter) in the system may be used to mount and to open an encrypted file-container for access. When the virtual disk is opened, you can read and write data as if it were a conventional removable disk.

You can do anything with a CryptoExpert virtual drive that you can do with a normal hard drive; only that with CryptoExpert, the encrypted volumes require password authentication before the files become accessible.

Major features:

Uses powerful encryption algorithm to encrypt your data: CAST 128 bit

Ability to create encrypted containers (files vault) up to 20 Mb in size

Access your files on a virtual volume on the fly

Maps any free drive letter like G:, F:, K: for virtual volume

Requires password authentication before the files become accessible

Really fast

Looks like normal hard drive
