DiskAid 1.2 - Use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a removable storage drive

Both the iPhone and iPod Touch are great tools to have your favorite music and videos always with you, but what if you also want to carry files or documents?

The solution is then DiskAid, a simple tool that lets you manage the contents of your Apple device as if it was just another removable drive plugged into your computer. DiskAid doesn't require any special drives or difficult configuration at all; just connect the iPhone or iPod Touch to the PC and you're good to go.

DiskAid lets you browse the contents of the device in a neatly organized folder structure, drag and drop these contents to and from the PC and also perform some file management tasks like creating new folders or renaming others.

On the downside, you'll find that the folder structure is not easy to recognize, that is, folders' and files' names do not always correspond to the apps and files you have in your device. For example, while checking my music collection, I saw that all the MP3 files were renamed to strange character sets instead of their regular names.

With DiskAid you can easily use your iPhone or iPod Touch as a storage unit for files and documents, and also transfer them to and from the PC. You'll have to guess what their real names are though.

Types 1.0.2 - View, edit and restore file associations

If you're anything like me then you're probably installing and uninstalling apps on a daily basis, which usually messes up all file associations in the system.

In that case, you can either repair them manually or run a program like Types. This simple tool lists all the file types available in your system and helps you view and edit their associations with certain apps. This means that, for instance, if you've always opened JPG images with XnView but this association has been taken over by another graphic editor, you can easily restore it with Types. Plus, it doesn't even require installation.

Besides file associations, Types also lets you edit icons, context menu, properties and other features of all file types shown in Windows Explorer. On the downside, the program is not very easy to use and doesn't include any documentation either, so you better know what you're doing before editing anything.

Types can help you restore broken file associations in your system, though it may not be easy to use for a beginner.

Konvertor 3.65.5 - A multimedia viewer/converter supporting multiple of formats

Sometimes you need a quick and easy solution to your conversion needs whether it's audio or images that are the problem.

Konvertor is a simple multimedia viewer and converter which supports conversion of various formats of images, animations, audio, video and text formats quickly and easily. Konvertor is able to convert just about any conceivable format which makes it extremely powerful. You can also use Konverter to organise your files by labeling them with personalised descriptions and as regards images, add filters. These include such effects as resizing, blurring and charcoal effects and it even accepts Photoshop plugins. However, the program only works alongside Internet Explorer as a plugin so Firefox users will be disappointed. By right clicking on images on any internet page, you can preview them in Konverter and be given options which format you want to convert it to. It also offers you the option to send the photo by e-mail or set it as your Windows wallpaper. The developers claim it supports over 140 formats and while that may be hard to believe, you'll certainly find it hard to catch it out.

Konverter is a great IE add on for anyone that wants to have an all powerful conversion tool for images and some audio.

Swiss File Knife 1.5.0 - Portable list of command line tools

Swiss File Knife - SFK makes daily tasks with Windows Command line easy. It covers such a huge range of tasks that it's hard to list them all here.

Amongst many other things, it can find and extract text in binary files, list dir tree sizes, filter and replace text, run an instant ftp server, find duplicate files, join many text files into one, create and verify md5 checksum lists and of course, run a command on all files. It can also detab text, create hexdumps from files, trace contents of a tcp connection, find dependencies between files, print colored text to terminals, locate commands in path, print last lines of a file, hex to binary, binary to source code, convert CR/LF, split and join large files. So how does this help you in your daily life. Well, if you want to transfer files from one PC to another for example, Swiss File Knife allows you to simply type "sfk ftpserv", and you have an ftp server running within one second. The same goes for many other functions: "sfk find" finds text within files - without long and boring index creations. "sfk run" runs your self-defined command on all files, but you get a preview of what would be done before the stuff is really executed.

No installation, registry modifications or DLL dependencies - SFK simply runs instantly, anywhere and is a great command line tool.

FileTypesMan 1.06 - Easily view and edit file type associations

After installing a few dozen software tools you've probably ruined your file association, meaning you no longer control which app opens which file types.

FileTypesMan can help you sort this out by displaying a list with all current file types and extensions currently registered in your system. You can edit each file's properties right on the program's interface, thus fixing broken associations or removing non-working right-click entries, just to mention two possible interesting usages.

FileTypesMan doesn't require any installation and while it may seem a bit too technical for novice users, it's definitely a very convenient file type manager that comes in especially handy when your file associations are overrun by any app.

Repair and restore current file associations on your system in a quick, easy way thanks to FileTypesMan.

ResourcesExtract 1.0 - Extract icons and animations stored in EXE, DLL, OCX, CPL files

Here’s a simple but very effective program that you’ll love. ResourcesExtract allows you to extract, from an exe or dll file, all the pictures and videos contained in it. For example, if you’ve always wanted to have the icons that a particular application uses, this program lets you access them in seconds.

From the main (and only) program menu, select the path of the application you need to extract the images from, then select the destination folder and choose what do you want to get: icons, cursors, bitmaps, avi files, etc. Press the ‘Start’ button and ResourcesExtract will open a folder with all the files extracted, ready for you to use almost immediately.

The software’s layout is really basic and there are not many options you can choose from, but on the other hand, the program is simple and effective. It would have been good to have a preview of the files contained within the exe file in order to choose just the images we needed and to avoid extracting things we don’t really want.

ResoucesExtract is a powerful tool that lets you extract images, icons and AVI files contained in an application. This can be very useful for web developers, but also end users who want to have a particular image of a program they like available to use.

Wuala Alpha - Looking for a secure place to backup your files? Have a look here

Wuala is an online drive, accessible from anywhere. Based on P2P technology, it stores encrypted versions of your documents around the Wuala network, so that they will always be available to you with no risk of server breakdown. Thanks to a multi-download system (as bytes of your files are located on different PCs of the network), you will access your files quickly. The program in itself is highly usable and has a pleasant design. All the files you store are set as private by default but if you need to share them with your friends, groups or with the whole network, you can do that easily by changing their availability.

The downsides are that you need the application installed to access your files, and this may be a problem when you are not at home or in the office. Furthermore, in order to use more than 1GB of storage you need to make the same amount of space available on your own hard-disk, for sharing over the network. I.E. if you would like to store files of 50GB, you’d have to make 50GB available on your own hard-disk.

The application could come in handy for anyone who needs to regularly back up data. In that case, one would have a secure virtual disk, always available. For users who just need to have a limited online hard-disk, accessible from a web-page thus without any installation, there are simpler useful services, like eSnips.com.

Wuala is a potentially very interesting application for secure backups and sharing documents with a working group but some of its restrictions limit its utility.

IE Throttle 1.0 - Cap the uploads and downloads on IE

We've all had problems where our browsing speed has been limited by other uploads or downloads or problems on a network.

Often this can be related to other processes on your system but more often than not, it's because you have other downloads and uploads, such as on a P2P network, that's hogging all your bandwidth. In which case, usually there's not much you can but close the offending application down. Not to however with IE Throttle which allows you to limit the uploads and downloads on your system. You set the limits according to how much bandwidth you have and the program does the rest. You can exclude certain IP addresses however if it's essential that certain programs or pages need lots of bandwidth. The good thing is that this program can even be used as a solution over an entire network because you can install it on individual PC's. . The problem however is that users can easily uninstall it meaning that they can hog even more bandwidth to their heart's content whilst others suffer. To ensure that lost bandwidth is "caught up with" at a later stage, it also features a "bursting mode" which detects when your bandwidth is at low usage and allocates it those applications that have been held back

This is a useful little utility that can be of help to those individuals or even organisations that have been experiencing bandwidth problems.

Ignition is a CD/DVD burning optimizer. It helps you saving space on your media by optimizing the way files are placed on the CDs/DVDs of your set. For example if your backup fits on 3-4 CDs, a manual files organazation might lead on a 4th with only 10 Mb of data when a better organization would have only required 3 CDs.
DiskInternals Linux Reader 1.1 - Access your Linux files from Windows

With DiskInternals Linux Reader you can see the contents of the Ext2 and Ext3 partitions of your Linux partitions directly from Windows.

The interface is reminiscent of Windows Explorer and allows access to files, folders and anything else you've stored whilst using Linux. The program includes a browser and provides direct links to other utilities which can retrieve data from FAT partitions, NTFS drives, flash disks and optical disks. The problem however is that the Linux partition is read-only, so you can't save documents created in Windows on it. The reason for this is that if you were able to edit and manipulate documents without actually running Linux, it could damage or corrupt the files when you next start Linux.

The program is particularly good at handling pictures as it gives the user a preview much as you expect in Windows or a decent photo file browser. If you have any security software installed on Linux, this is also no problem as the program can circumvent it.

If you regularly switch between Linux and Windows or want to try and restore a deleted file, then DiskInternals is everything you'll need.

Data corruption is a terrible thing to happen to anyone and there's little you can usually do in the wake of it. However, BadCopy Pro is a damaged floppy disk repair and floppy data recovery tool that can help to salvage some data from corrupted files. It deals with all media including
damaged or defective CD data recovery (CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW) plus DVD data recovery (DVD-ROM, DVD+R/W and DVD-R/W).

It can also help with annoying burning problems caused by CD-R/W burning problems and retrieval of data from all sessions on multi-session CDs. If you've lost photos on digital camera due to corruption, it can also help scan SD disks for errors and recover data. Finally, it even extends to large external media such as Iomega Zip drives, Jazz drives, MO disks, and USB flash drives.

This program provides no guarantees but it's better than nothing and definitely worth a try if your data has become corrupted.

LojiklSweep creates hard drive backups and gives you multiple options over how it does so. The program has an easily navigable interface which guides the user through the process. First, it creates a task, indicates what should be copied (folders, registry, system files, and so on.) It also lets you select which filter should be applied and sets the date and schedule for the task. You then only need to indicate where the data should be recorded i.e. hard drive, FTP server, compact disc etc.

To copy data such as My Documents, Bookmarks browsers and folders of photos and music, LojiklSweep has direct access to the shortcut paths. You can also verify copies to check their integrity and automatically email backup alerts to let you know once it's been completed. This is also useful in that gives you an exact time and date as to when the last backup was performed.

In short, this is an easy to use backup application that does the hard work so you don't have to remember them.

PPT2DVD (formerly as PowerPoint2DVD) is a very simple tool to burn your Powerpoint files to DVDs or miniDVDs (MiniDVD is a regular CD that has DVD files in it.
DBF Converter is a versatile yet easy-to-use conversion program. It has a familiar Wizard-like interface but can also be used as a command-line utility for batch file processing. DBF Converter supports all the modern data interchange formats, such as XML, CSV, TXT, HTML, RTF, PRG and others. You can even convert your DBF table into a set of SQL queries that can be imported into any SQL database.

In addition to simple conversions, DBF Converter allows you manipulate data by selecting only specific columns and applying filters. Unlike simplified filtering rules that are normally available in other DBF applications, DBF Converter dynamically builds a sample database record form. The ability to put advanced masks and rules into any field of the sample record is one of the most valuable DBF Converter features.

PropertyEditor 4.2 - Expand the properties in the Windows File menu

Managing files in Windows isn't always simple and you're often left wondering why Microsoft has restricted the amount of things you can do with files. Thankfully, it is possible to access extra functions for changing and managing files, but you're going to need a third party application to do so. PropertyEditor is just such an application and lets you configure several more options.

First off, the program displays the path to the file and also its size. Then you can add new functions to the menu, indicating that the PropertyEditor is responsible fo a particular task. Another useful option is to assign a drive letter to a folder or device. Through a series of tabs you can tweak typical NTFS options such as the allocation of icons to files, manipulate the creation dates, and inidicate the state of the file (i.e. hidden, indexed, reading, temporary, etc.) In some cases you do need to be careful when changing file data as they is no way of reverting back to a file's original state.

If used correctly though, PropertyEditor opens up a world of new options for making your files easier to handle.

ZKleener 1.0b - Erase junk files, protect your privacy and gain disk space

ZKleener is a disk cleaning tool that enables you to get rid of junk files in a very easy way. In fact, you can define by yourself which kind of files should be considered as junk, because the program's settings enable you to filter file types by extension and therefore include or exclude them from the program's black list.

ZKleener features three different scanning methods (Quick, Full and Custom) with diverse depth ranges. It also includes a backup and restoration utility which is supposed to help you recovering files that have been deleted by mistake. Unfortunately this tool didn't seem to work for us.

Once the scan is finished (it doesn't take long, even in the Full System mode) the program displays the number of files that are about to be erased and the percentage of disk that will then be freed. You'll be amazed at the amount of disk space that can go to waste only in temporary files.

ZKleener is a great application to perform quick, effective cleaning tasks in a very easy way.
