One of the worst moments you can live as a computer user is realizing you just deleted your most precious photos from the hard drive by accident. Don't worry, it has happened to all of us at some point.

In any case, before you start banging your head against your desk, try using UndeleteMyFiles and see if you can recover your important files. This tool analyzes your hard drive and finds any file that's suitable for recovering, even if you've already emptied the Recycle Bin.

Bear in mind though that this suitability depends on many factors, such as how much time has passed since you deleted the files and how much you've been using the computer, but as long there's a chance, there's hope.

UndeleteMyFiles is very easy to use and works not only with hard drives, but also with removable drives. Plus, it includes some file management extra features such as a file wiper, a disk imaging tool and an email recovery tool, among others.

With UndeleteMyFiles there's still a chance to recover those mistakenly deleted files, either from your hard drive or from any other removable media.

Pandora Recovery 1.3.7 - Recovers files even if they have been permanently removed

You'd be forgiven for thinking that Pandora Recovery is associated with the Pandora Genome music project but in actual fact, this utility has nothing to do with music.

It's quite simply, a file restoration utility that attempts to help you when you've accidentally deleted a file. Pandora Recovery can recover files permanently from the Recycle Bin simply by using the Shift + Delete keys bypassing. What's more, it can recover files that were deleted, according to the developers, up to a month after they were deleted. However, it's very unlikely you'll be able to recover something that's been deleted so long ago because a file "deterioration" (although the developers claim users have been able to recover files 5 years after deletion!).

This may all sound a bit far fetched although when you delete a file on a FAT32 or NTFS file system, its content is not totally erased from disk. Only the reference to file data in File Allocation Table or Master File Table is marked as deleted which means that sometimes you can make it visible again. The types of file you can recover are quite wide ranging including pictures, songs, movies and documents. Note though that you have a much greater chance of recovering data lost after the program has been installed because it scans your hard drive and builds an index of existing and deleted files and directories (folders). This gives you much greater control over which files to recover.

There are no guarantees that Pandora Recovery can help you restore accidentally deleted data but if there is any trace of it left, Pandora should be able to give it a damned good go.

DataRecovery could be the key that lets you undelete files that have been deleted by accident. This application is able to analyze your hard-drive (supports FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS) and locate files that have been deleted, offering you the option to undelete them.

How is this possible? Simple: because Windows doesn't actually delete files without overwriting the part of the physical disk where the file was located. With this program, retrieving deleted files will not always be possible, but it may just be enough to get what you want.

Word Repair 1.0.0.49 - Recover damaged Word files

If you've been working on a Word document for a long time then it's a nightmare when it suddenly corrupts or won't open.

The reasons for this are numerous and usually it's not your fault. If you've ever received any of the following messages then you'll know what I'm talking about: "The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. Check the file permissions for the document or drive. Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document."; "Word cannot open the document."; "Word cannot open the document: user does not have access privileges."; "When you attempt to open a Microsoft Word 97 document into Microsoft Word version 6.x or 7.x, the document contains garbage characters." Repair My Word can come to the rescue if you've suffered any of these error messages and has the ability to repair Microsoft Word 6.0, Word 95, 97, 2000, XP, and 2003 for Windows. To use it, you simply open the corrupt Word file, preview the recoverable text in the preview window and save this text to a new error free Word file. However, don't expect miracles from this software because it doesn't work in all cases and in addition, even if it can, the rescued document is often a jumbled mess of words of symbols.

If you've ever lost a Word document to corruption or file error, then this is definitely worth a try.

Deleting a file by mistake is one of those stupid accidents you feel ashamed of explaining to others, like locking yourself out of home or having to pay extra because you forgot your season ticket.

In the case of deleted files however, don't worry because there's a solution. It's called Glary Undelete (yes, the same guys who created Glary Utilities) and it can help you recover any file you've accidentally deleted from your system, even if you have already emptied the Recycle bin.

That said, bear in mind that this kind of software apps must be used with caution, in the sense that they are not magical tools that will recover your files no matter how much time has passed since you delete them. There are other factors that influence the percentage of success in file recovery in addition to time, like drive usage and cluster movement. But if you use Glary Undelete right after the "accident" occurs, chances are you'll be able to recover your files without any problems – and without anybody noticing it.

The program scans the selected drive, among which you can include removable devices, and displays a list with all deleted files along with their recovery status. You can also use filters to refine this search or look for specific files, which comes in really handy as the list is sometimes too long.

Did you just erase a file by accident? Don't worry: Glary Undelete can help you recover it.

When you mistakenly delete some of your dearest photos from the camera or any removable device you feel like the most stupid person in the world. You would do just anything to go back in time and rescue those pictures! Fortunately there's no need to sell your soul to the devil or start saving for a time machine. Simply download this neat tool and let it do the job for you!

Free Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery scans any media drive (be it a memory card, an USB memory key or a camera directly plugged to your PC) and recovers all deleted photos. It's so easy as selecting the drive you deleted the pictures from and choosing a folder to save recovered images. Plus, it supports the most popular graphic formats.

The program includes some other recovery tools that may be useful in case your memory card appears to be corrupted. The interface is quite easy to use, and the main window shows some misleading links to other apps written by the same author (I say misleading because they look like buttons for the program's functions).

Please, bear in mind that photo recovery is not a miracle task that will always solve the issue. It all depends on how much time has passed after you deleted the pictures and, above all, if you have been using the drive where they were stored. In any case, you should definitely give this tool a try. You're not wasting any money and you may be able to recover your photos. Is there anything more valuable than that?

Disk Heal 1.41 - Fix disk errors caused after virus infections

If you've been hit by a serious virus, you might be experiencing various problems with your hard drive even after the virus has been disinfected. Disk Heal recovers hard disk archives that have been infected by a virus or damaged in some way. It can also recover the functionality of programs that are no longer executable, access to corrupted registries and the launching of the Task Administrator.

However, because Disk Heal requires access to all of these areas which are usually restricted, it can seriously conflict with your antivirus software. It's therefore very important that you either disable any anti virus software you are running or, grant permissions to disk heal to allow it full access to your system.

You should also be very careful when allowing Disk Heal to make changes to the registry. Many security programs flag Disk Heal as a potential threat because it can make fundamental changes to your registry which can render your system useless. It's therefore essential that you make a backup of your registry before using Disk Heal.

If you have been affected by a virus and suffered hard drive damage as a result, Disk Heal may well help you, but be sure to back up your system before using it.

Have you ever lost a file due to corruption? If so, you may be able to rescue it via SmartFileCopier. It attempts to rescue anything from FTP servers to damaged CD and DVD's. It can also rescue files stored on a local network, FTP server, a web site or a removable disk.

In many cases, the inability to copy a corrupt file eliminates any chance of recovering the data. Normally, Windows will automatically notify you during the copying process if it detects errors in a file but there is no way to correct it or at least download a part of the file that may be sufficient to fix it.

SmartFileCopier works by loading the file into the program and running a diagnostic check to see whether it can be repaired. In 50% of cases, you'll probably find that it can't but it does occasionally manage to make corrupted file at least partially readable.

This is not a full-proof solution but it's definitely worth a shot if you've suffered the worst with a file.

Did you know that a typical CD-R/DVD-R disk can hold its data intact for only a few years? ICE ECC is designed to provide an ideal solution to this problem - before you store your data, protect it against corruption with ICE ECC.

ICE ECC is easy to use. To protect a file against corruption, just select the file/files/directories with the program by navigating the explorer-style window and click Create. This creates recovery file/files of the original files. You can easily control the size and number of the recovery files.

When you want to verify whether the file has been modified or if the data in it has been corrupted, just select the appropriate .ecc file and click Verify. ICE ECC will then do a full analysis of the file and let you know if it has been corrupted, in that case ICE ECC will automatically recover it for you.

FreeUndelete is a freeware data recovery program for deleted files. In case of accidental deletion of files on a NTFS file system (used by default in Windows XP, 2000 and NT) FreeUndelete is the utility to help.

A deleted file is essentially an area on disk designated as free and ready to accept data (such as contents of some other file). Luckily, unless the area has already been overwritten, it still holds the contents of the deleted file. Due to this fact it is possible to undelete files.

Fundelete 2.02 - A new version of the Recycle Bin with an option to retrieve deleted files

Although NT 4.0 provides a Recycle Bin, it is of very limited use. Only files deleted from the Explorer GUI end up being placed there. Any files zapped from a command window or from within a program are lost forever. Fundelete is a utility that replaces NT 4.0's Recycle Bin to provide full protection of files deleted from anywhere. Fundelete includes the same configurability as Recycle Bin's Properties dialog, including which drives should have protection enabled, and how large the Fundelete Bin should be allowed to grow. Fundelete also provides a filtering dialog that allows you to prevent files of specific extensions not to be sent to the Bin, such as editor backup files, and temporary files. You can also specify directories that will be excluded from protection.

Note that Fundelete does not enable you to recover files that were deleted before Fundelete was installed. To recover valuable files that may have already been deleted, try FileRestore from Winternals Software.
