As soon as your MP3 or photo collection starts to grow, you realize how important is to have your files properly named. And in case they aren't, Advanced Renamer can lend you a hand.

Advanced Renamer is a handy tool with which you can easily rename multiple files and folders simultaneously, applying a single renaming profile to all of them at the same time. This profile is totally customizable, meaning that the renaming tasks in Advanced Renamer may vary from fixing letter case to completely replacing the file's name with a new one.

What I like about Advanced Renamer is its flexibility when it comes to configuring the profile. There are certainly quite a few options to choose from, so you'll surely find one way or another to properly rename your files. Also, Advanced Renamer lets you preview any changes in real time, which is perfect to check how the new name will look like and fix any possible errors.

Don't waste precious time renaming tons of files by yourself: simply load them on Advanced Renamer, choose the most suitable profile and let it do the hard work for you.

Bulk Rename Utility is easy to use and has a small memory “footprint” so can be left running all the time without consuming all your memory.
PFrank 2.19 - Rename programs in bulk

PFrank is simple but convenient way to change and alter multiple files in one go without having to go through them one by one.

The developer claims to have been motivated by the lack of a decent renaming program as most have to be run with multiple passes using different sets of renaming sequences until finally getting the required names. PFrank allows you to rename everything you want to in one go using a Windows Explorer style interface. However, it does have a lot of options for deciding how and what type of files you want to rename which can be a bit tricky. For this reason, the developer has started a forum which deals with most of the main problems. Particularly with the new features that have been added, you may experience problems. These include the new plugin for insertion of meta data from raw image files (e.g. cr2, nef, sr2) and a much improved undo facility, new filters, new positioning controls and the ability for users to plug in their own renaming commands. There's also a recently added custom list manager for managing any number of custom lists for repeat file changing.

For those that do a lot of file changing and renaming, PFrank is an excellent mass file name changer that will ensure you save time.

WildRename is a file renaming tool that enables you to rename multiple files at the same time, therefore saving you loads of time and typing.

The program features a nicely designed interface, something I really appreciated as this kind of programs usually feature quite confusing menus. There are several renaming options, including the most basic ones (adding or removing characters) and also some advanced options such as changing case or replacing text strings by some completely new words.

I specially liked the possibility to simulate changes, so that you get a preview of how the new file names are going to look like before applying any definitive change to them. However this previewing option would be much more useful and effective if you could see it in real time and didn't have to actually process files.

Other interesting features in WildRename are the possibility to perform several renaming task on a row, save those tasks as a renaming job that you can use later on and also embed WildRename as a new command in the SendTo menu in Windows Explorer's context menu.

WildRename is a full-featured file renaming tool that will help you rename tons of files in just a few clicks.

Mass Renamer 1.0.0.49 - Rename several filles at once

There's nothing more frustrating than having to rename several files at once and then finding that you have to go through them one by one.

Mass Renamer allows you to change and rename files easily and quickly but not just that, it allows you to change some of the information contained in the document properties. It's particularly useful if you've been in a position where your files have been deleted and you need to restore them to their original state but don't have enough time to go through them all separately. Mas Renamer goes beyond renaming just file names however and also allows you to change whole directories (including subfolders) in one step. You can define rules for file changes and setup complex tasks to be carried out automatically while you are away from your PC. The problem is that this program seems mainly designed just for changing documents rather than other types of files. So for example, you can change documents according to Keyword, Template, Last Author and Revision History, but you wouldn't be able to change music or multimedia files.

A useful mass renamer but only for those that are editing mainly documents and need to search by a specific key field.

Changing the name of a large group of files individually can be a real pain in the butt. You may find that files transferred from your digital camera to your hard drive are in order, but their names consist of a group of letters and numbers that usually don't identify the pics themselves. Plus, after you transfer the files from your camera and delete them from it's memory, the next set of pics taken with your camera can have the same name as the files you've just uploaded. Different pictures, same name! Flexible Renamer by Naru will take a batch of files and give them the name of your choosing.

Flexible Renamer is an excellent file utility that takes large groups of files and allows you to change their names in bulk. Complete with numerous configurations, you'll wonder why you've always changed your file names manually!

Like many other things in Windows, Vista failed to address some pretty basic issues that still persist.

One of those is the simple act of file renaming which you still can't do in bulk. However, with this program, you can easily solve that problem plus many other file renaming issues. With this tool you can organize your music, picture, video, or any other types of files with much greater speed and flexibility than ordinarily in Windows. PFrank comes equipped wit a very useful preview button which allows you to preview changes before you make them. You can select several files at once - in fact as many as you want - and rename them all at the same time. The author claims that there is virtually no renaming function that can't be carried out by this program but if there is something you can't do, you can probably find out how to do it on the developer forums.

A useful little utility that's flexible and should come as standard with Windows Vista.

Namexif 1.0 - Rename your photos using EXIF data

Digital cameras are great for taking loads of pictures. The problem comes afterwards: they have such similar names that it's difficult to manage them.

This is why Namexif comes in handy. This simple tool enables you to rename digital photos to more telling names, that is, the date and time when the picture was taken. In order to rename files, Namexif makes use of the EXIF data recorded with each image. The whole process is done in a few steps – the program doesn't even require installation – and is really fast.

Namexif includes several naming templates to choose from, as well as the possibility to add a customized text after it. However, it doesn't allow you to rename files with completely new names, that is, without using the EXIF data. Another point I didn't like was the fact that you can't get a preview of the results before actually renaming files.

While having a date instead of a random number is probably a better way to organize photos, I'm not sure if it makes recognition any better. I don't remember every single date I took pictures, so maybe it would have been better to include a complete custom renaming as one more option.

Namexif renames your pictures using EXIF data, although we missed having more options to make photo names a bit more telling.

MP3 Fox 2008 4.11 - Simple yet efficient MP3 renamer

Sometimes simple is better, and MP3 Fox is a good example of it. This easy tool enables you to rename MP3 files according to the data stored in their ID3 tags or a customizable naming pattern defined by yourself.

The program doesn't require installation. Simply unzip the files to any folder and you're ready to use it. You can drag and drop MP3 folders and files onto its interface and then select the rename option you prefer among three different possibilities. Also, the program can apply upper case to the first letter in all words, remove numbers and replace certain text strings, among other options. During our tests, the renaming process hardly took more than a few seconds and results were excellent.

The great thing about MP3 Fox is that you can make a preview before actually applying the changes. The downside to it is that annoying message that appears every time you rename files, asking you if you're really sure. But I guess that's a tiny flaw that I can accept in such a simple, great program.

Easily rename your MP3 files according to their ID3 tags.

If you've ended up with a pile of files with useless titles, a file-renaming utility could help you keep things straight. This utility, 1-4a Rename, handles large numbers of files in one fell swoop. Change file names, extensions, or both. You can preview changes to prevent errors, but if you change your mind you can avail yourself with the Undo function. Enhanced sort functions help you organize strangely numbered files--digital photos straight from a camera, for instance.

And if you want a little fun with your utility, you may be amuse yourself by using Star Trek-style "stardates" instead of regular old months and years on your files.

Although 1-4a Rename is free for both personal and business use, the author asks that you send him an e-mail telling him what you think of the program.
