4shared desktop has the benefit of looking just like the web app, so users will be totally familiar with the layout. It also uses a fairly standard Windows-style layout, with a traditional file tree so it's easy to organize your files.

The advantage of this desktop version of 4shared is that big uploads tend be smoother. You can't accidentally close this app like you can a browser window either, so if you use 4shared a lot it's pretty useful.

While it's pretty feature rich, 4shared isn't as usable as Dropbox. On the other hand, the basic account gives you much more free storage space. It is also makes you feel more in control than with services like RapidShare or MegaUpload as it's much easier to manage what you are storing online.

There are good sharing options, but again it's just a little over complex compared with DropBox's super simple system. The upload/download frame features information like speed, and elapsed time, but it could really be presented better.

4shared desktop fits well into a Windows environment as a file storage and sharing application, but is over complex and the interface is a bit outdated.

With Dropbox you can seamlessly synchronize contents between several different computers – even mobile devices – no matter where you are. This means that you can use Dropbox not only to sync files between computers, but also to share photos with friends or collaborate in a common project with your workmates.

Dropbox is dead easy to use. All you have to do is install a small client and from that moment on, you'll have a special folder inside the My Documents folder. Anything you drop here will be synced in the background with your public dropbox profile – and therefore accessible online. Dropbox currently offers 2 GB of free storage, which should be enough to share quite a bunch of files.

Worried about privacy? Fear not. Only computers you link to your account will be able to access your files. Also, Dropbox keeps track of changes, so that you can access previous versions of a file. In a way it works as a backup tool as well, because it keeps copies of your files.

Dropbox has a main drawback though: it's painfully slow. Yes, it works in the background and yes, you don't have to be checking the uploading rate every ten seconds, but 30 minutes to upload three photos is simply too much for me.

In other words, Microsoft SkyDrive works like Dropbox. It's like an online hard drive with which you can synchronize the files stored on your PC so you can access them wherever you are. To be flexible, Microsoft SkyDrive offers complementary Mac, iOS and Android apps. To access your files when you're away from your PC, you just access your Windows Live Skydrive account, part of the Windows Live family.

Microsoft SkyDrive is a very easy to use. When you install it on your computer, it will create a folder called Microsoft Skydrive on your system. This folder is the shared one, so you need to put a copy of all the items you want to access in here. It comes with a few example documents so you can get to grips with the system easily, but it's really very, very simple. Once you've put the documents in the folder, they'll be accessible from any PC that you sign into with your Skydrive account.

Microsoft SkyDrive offers a generous amount of online storage, and excellent integration with Windows Live. These factors combine to make it a pretty strong tool. There aren't really any "configuration" options to speak of, but if you want to access your PC from your Microsoft SkyDrive account (i.e. from a different PC), you'll need to get a special code. Once you get the code, however, simple remote operations are easily done.

Bear in mind that Microsoft SkyDrive offers a default 7GB of storage. If you're already a Skydrive user, however, you're entitled to 25GB for free, which you can enable via your Microsoft Live SkyDrive account. It's very quick and takes literally one click.

In all, Microsoft SkyDrive is an excellent app. It's clean, quick and easy to use, as well as offering 25GB of free online storage.

4Sync is similar to other file storage services like Dropbox and iCloud in that it gives you a way to store files and access them across multiple devices. This includes on a Windows PC, Mac or mobile devices such as Android and iPhone, among others.

Share photos, music, videos and other files with 4Sync. Setting up an account comes with 10GB of free storage space. It's as simple and dragging and dropping files into the 4Sync folder on your computer. If you're new to this type of service, 4Sync very conveniently explains how to use the desktop app by providing a basic wizard with the download file.

During the registration process through 4Sync's desktop application, you'll be asked to create an account by providing an email address and password. Your email address acts as your username to access the web app version of 4Sync. If you want an additional 5GB of free space, you'll want to log into the web-based version of 4Sync via the email account you registered on the desktop app. On the bottom left of your account's main screen, simply click the blue button with the white plus sign that says "Get 5GB free." A verification link will be sent to the email address you provided. It's a little tedious, but definitely worth it for fifty percent more space to make use of.

Syncing occurs immediately across devices that have an internet connection. 4Sync also makes sharing certain files with friends easy by providing you with a shareable link whenever you want to make files public or selectively viewable to others.

Previously Google had a variety of different services that connected to each other. Now Google has released Google Drive which integrates Google Docs, Google+, and a cloud storage service into one.

While Gmail and Google+ are still separate from Drive, Google Docs was renamed to Drive with the addition of a free 5 GB of online storage. Like Dropbox, it adds a shortcut to your Windows Explorer so you can drag-and-drop files.

Once added, they are uploaded to your online account. Any type of file can be uploaded and are then accessible through the currently available Android app or online. The integration of storage with documents allows you to work with larger assets like images and video.

Friends can comment on anything you have uploaded, adding another level of social interaction. Drive is comparable to other cloud storage services, but the added connection to your Google account makes the unified system much easier to use. You can purchase more storage for extra space if necessary.

Google Drive has a lot of potential, but there is still room for improvement.

Microsoft Live SkyDrive is a free 25GB online virtual drive you can access for free with your Windows Live ID. It enables you to upload and share photos, videos and documents, either in public folders – accessible by anyone – or private folders than only you can see. Belvedere is a simple background application which can watch over your files to make sure that specific rules are applied to them. For example, you can ask Belvedere that all MP3 files larger than 500KB and whose name contains "Blues" is moved directly into the subdirectory "Blues" in the My Music folder. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for metatags - it only reads the names of the files.

Belvedere can be set to run a huge number of other tasks - just about anything you can do with a file in Windows can be assigned a rule in Belvedere. It can also use multiple criteria, such as the length, name, size or date of creation, each with several options. You have to ensure that Belvedere is always running however because if not, none of the rules are applied.

Belevedere is a very basic looking application with a lot of powerful uses. If used right, it could save you a hell of a lot of confusion although it takes some time to set up if you need several rules.

Set a password for all your folders, when you access them online, or share content with co-workers or friends. Diino comes with a useful client where you can manage file and folders you want to save online. Unfortunately, the desktop application doesn’t support the drag and drop function which is really a pity.

The service is similar to the Wuala one we saw some time ago, but in this case in order to have more than 2GB of space available you have to pay, whereas with Wuala you have to share your hard disk space as in peer-to-peer network.
