Easy to use

Using Revo Uninstaller is very simple. As soon as its installed, the main interface displays which programs are installed. Right click on the icon for options and information, or simply select the one you want to remove and Revo Uninstaller performs a very through removal process, including making a backup point in case anything goes wrong or it removes something you don't want it to.

Revo Uninstaller delves deep into your Registry to remove all entries and other temporary files that most other uninstallers leave behind. Some unscrupulous developers make sure that their programs are as hard to remove as possible while other things like malware get totally rooted in your system and Windows uninstaller can do little to help. That's why you may find it useful to use Total Uninstall before you install new software as it creates a snapshot of your system prior to installing a new application. It then takes an additional snapshot after the installation has completed and performs an automatic comparison of the two. The program displays any changes that have been made in a tree view, highlighting all registry values and/or files that have been added, changed or deleted. The program then saves these changes and if you decide to uninstall the application, it can reverse the changes to the previous state. This is similar to the Windows rollback utility although that takes up a lot of space on your hard drive and only makes rollback points at certain intervals. This program does it when you want although it does take rather a long time to scan and analyze the state of your machine at any one time.

The first thing we liked about Free Uninstaller is the fact that it doesn't require installation (it would have been quite paradoxical the other way round). Also, we didn't have to wait for ages for the app list to appear, as we used to with Windows. Free Uninstaller displays the list immediately and uses a color code to distinguish invalid elements and system components. Other nice extra options offered by this program are a search tool and an information box which shows information about the selected application.

In short, a basic, easy-to-use program that does a very good job when it's time to do some software cleaning in your hard drive.

The Norton Removal Tool works as a step-by-step wizard, guiding you through the uninstalling process. You don't have to look for the specific folder where Norton product is installed, as the tool will automatically detect it. Then, it will erase every single item related to the application, including Registry keys.

The whole process hardly takes a couple of minutes, but please bear in mind that you may be asked for your Norton serial key, as well as having to restart your system after Norton Removal Tool has finished its job. Also, it would have been nice to be able to select which products you want to uninstall, in case you have more than one.

IObit Uninstaller 2 puts a particular emphasis on uninstalling tricky software and programs. Every time you uninstall, you’ll have the option of a Standard or Advanced uninstall – Advanced will allow you to finish up the process with a Powerful Scan to remove leftover items from the registry.

IObit Uninstaller 2 also offers a Forced Uninstall option, which lets you specify the file path of the program to be uninstalled. This is really useful for those tricky programs that don’t even appear in the installed programs list. Finally, there’s also a Toolbar uninstall option.

Apart from these advanced uninstall options, IObit Uninstaller 2 has a number of other features that make it pleasant to use. There’s a search function, the ability to do batch uninstalls of multiple programs at once and, of course, various filters for your installed programs so you can pin down the ones you need to remove more easily.

Help for IObit Uninstaller 2 is online only and there aren’t many configuration options. You can export a list of your applications, and manage logs of previous uninstalls, but that’s pretty much it. In all, IObit Uninstaller 2's functionality isn’t that much more advanced than Window’s built-in uninstaller, but if you are looking for a more attractive interface for the job, or if there’s a particular program that’s giving you trouble, it’s a good, effective option.

IObit Uninstaller 2 is a nice uninstaller for stubborn programs. Average users, however, may not actually benefit from it very much.

Although The PC Decrapifier is designed for new computers, there's no reason not to use it on an older one. It's easy to let hard drives get filled up with unwanted installations, but Windows makes uninstallation a bit of a pain. Instead of uninstalling one by one, The PC Decrapifier tries to automate things, y letting you select multiple applications to uninstall at once.

The PC Decrapifier doesn't need installation. When you open it, you are taken through a step-by-step process, after which the the app closes. The PC Decrapifier first asks you what startup processes you'd like to kill, so your PC opens more quickly, and then you can choose to uninstall any other program on your PC. While it lacks some of the advanced features of Revo Uninstaller, it's quicker and lighter.

Unlike many apps that warn you about deleting things, with the startup process The PC Decrapifier actually gives you a layman's explanation of why you should or shouldn't delete a program. It's not totally automated - once it starts you'll have to agree to each uninstallation, but the process is still quicker and more efficient for multiple apps than in Window's Control Panel.

The PC Decrapifier isn't the most complex or slick looking uninstaller, but it is efficient and effective. Great for multiple uninstallations, and cleaning the rubbish off new PCs.

Installing and uninstalling this kind of software can leave your hard drive in a bit of a mess, with registry entries and hidden files left undeleted. This is where AppRemover comes in handy - a program designed to remove some of the worst uninstall offenders.

When installed, AppRemover is just a .exe file that will remove itself after use, so it won't add to the clogged up hard drive problem. When you run it, any antispyware or antivirus programs are listed, and you can choose what to delete, or delete them all. After the uninstallation process, AppRemover gives you an analysis of what was done, and if some files will be deleted after the next restart of the system and so on.

It's a shame AppRemover doesn't have broader removal abilities, as it does a great job of uninstalling these security programs. This will be especially useful for anyone wanting to replace their anti-virus app with another, when two different security programs have created system conflicts, or in case the program's uninstall process fails for some reason.
