Glary Utilities is an excellent toolkit includes a handful of system utilities that enable you to tweak, repair, optimize and improve your system's performance. Tools are conveniently categorized so that you can quickly find what you're looking for: disk cleaner, uninstall manager, memory optimizer, file shredder, duplicates finder, tracks eraser... just about any tool you need.

All the tools included in Glary Utilities are generally very intuitive and in case they make important changes to the system (like the Registry repairing tool) Glary Utilities creates a backup copy first.

Not all the tools included in Glary Utilities include configuration settings, something we missed in some of them such as the Disk cleaner. Also, we would like to have a Firefox Assistant, the same way the program includes an Internet Explorer Assistant.

In a few words, CCleaner Portable is the pocket version of CCleaner, an excellent cleaning tool with which you can erase unused files, thus gaining back valuable free disk space and making Windows run faster and smoother. The great advantage about CCleaner Portable is that it allows you to do just the same without leaving any evidence of use on the computer. In fact, you don't even need to install it. Simply run it from your USB memory stick and you'll have immediate access to all of its features. CCleaner Portable does create some necessary keys in Windows Registry, but these are deleted when the program is closed, so there'll be no trace of it left on the system.

Regarding its functions, CCleaner Portable does a very satisfactory job. The program helps you to get rid of many different files such as Internet cookies, temporary files, log files or all those leftovers found after months of installing and uninstalling applications. The configuration menu in CCleaner Portable features interesting options like the possibility to keep certain cookies which may be useful for you or the ability to add custom file types to the delete filter. Apart from freeing up disk space, CCleaner Portable also lets you uninstall applications, find broken registry keys and list all the programs set to run when Windows launches.

On the down side, CCleaner Portable does not allow you to undo changes, so you must be very sure about what you want to erase before clicking on "Yes". Also, the program can take a few minutes before finishing the analysis that must be done prior to deletion. However, this is probably due to the fact that CCleaner Portable runs from a USB device and that we checked all the available options when cleaning our system – the test found 558 MB of removable material, which obviously took a while to be deleted.

All in all, CCleaner Portable is every bit as good as its "big brother" and comes in really handy when you want to use it on any PC without installing anything or leaving any traces behind you.

The interface in Free Windows Cleanup Tool will surely ring a bell. It’s almost an exact copy of the popular CCleaner, with the same structure and icon layout. The only difference is that Free Windows Cleanup Tool includes an extra feature: a defrag tool for the Windows Registry.

It is hard to recommend Privacy Agent over CCleaner as CCleaner has more control, speedier performance, and many more features. While Privacy Agent's interface is more fun and flashy, it's not really necessary and doesn't make for a better app.

Overall, Privacy Agent does what it does well but it just can't match CCleaner's performance or features.

Though AppCleaner doesn’t really include any revolutionary feature or any utility you can’t already find in Windows, it offers you an easier, more comfortable environment to access and use them.

The interface In AppCleaner is divided into three main tabs: Cleaner, Tools and Options. In Cleaner you’ll find four more tabs (Apps, Browsers, Registry and Windows) where you can select the elements you want AppCleaner to get rid of: browser cache and internet history, temporary files, lists of recent documents, invalid Registry keys and more. The Tools tab, on the other hand, includes utilities to uninstall software from your system and remove selected applications from system startup.

Before you apply any changes, AppCleaner lets you create a backup in case the changes to the Registry cause any problems and you need to roll them back. If only the program let you add new apps to clean their traces, it would be perfect!

AppCleaner doesn’t include any revolutionary features, but it’s still a handy, easy-to-use utility with a bunch of cleaning and maintenance utilities for your system.

The minimal size of this software means that it install and runs efficiently, and although it can play a important role in keeping a hard drive clear of unnecessary files, we can't help but notice that in reality DCleaner is a stripped-down version of CCleaner. While DCleaner was released more recently, it doesn't seem to have learned from the example of the more experienced and comprehensive CCleaner. And if the developer didn't want comparisons of the two to be made, the program should have been given a different name.

Our biggest criticism of DCleaner is the interface design. Put simply, it is ghastly, and this fact alone immediately made us wary of trusting it to delete potentially vital files from our system. It's unforgivable that such a simple program requires slide bars and next buttons for the menu items when the program window itself takes up one quarter of the screen and doesn't allow you to resize. What's more, you would be forgiven for missing the 'Run Cleaner' button altogether because of its drab design and peculiar positioning in the top-left corner of the window.

We were also taken by surprise with the link to the DCleaner website, which comes in the form of the only graphical element on screen, and once clicked, produces an error message and closes the program. That's one feature that will have a lot of people scratching their heads!

All in all, DCleaner does perform an important role in any computer user's routine, and will help most make the best possible use out of their hard disk space. Nevertheless, there is a program that does the same thing, and more, with the added bonus of better packaging- and it starts with 'C'.
