PSP Video 9 2.17 Beta - Convert videos into the PSP format

PSP is the classic Sony console that apart from running games, also allows you to play all kinds of videos, but unfortunately only in the native format of the console.

PSP Video 9 however allows you to convert any video format to PSP. The program has a wide variety of options that lets you select both the quality of video and sound and it includes an administrator to copy video created directly to the console. All you need is a USB cable and your PSP to transfer files to your console. However, as you'll see in the developer forum, nothing goes quite as planned with this program. Although files are transferred, frequently you won't be able to watch them which is what a lot of users are reporting. One of the problems is that files will frequently appear as 0KB and the developer suggest that it may be because your PSP memory is not "clean" enough for the program to need. What you'll need to do is reformat your entire PSP memory card which is a drastic step but seems to be the only way to get things going again.

If you've got a PSP, and want to watch movies and clips in other formats, this is an option although you may find it hit and miss.

Sothink DVD Movie Maker 1.0.70424 - Convert popular video formats to DVD

Converting video to DVD format is obviously essential if you want to watch any of your favourite films or clips stored on your hard drive on your DVD player.

The likelihood is, most of your videos are in various formats so you'll need someway of converting them all without requiring a different program for each different format. Sothink Movie DVD Maker is designed for those that want maximum flexibility in this regard allowing you to burn to DVD format files from a wide variety of sources including AVI, MPEG, internet clips and those recorded by DVC or webcam plus virtually any other format you can imagine. When adding clips to the GUI, you can play your source clips to check that it's the right video you were looking for. Conversions can be cancelled at any time so if it's taking too long, there's no problem but it would have been much better if the developers had allowed us to pause conversion for completion at a later stage. However, they have added an option to extract video files to a DVD folder so that you can burn your films to DVD at any other time.

With the ability to add subtitles as well, you can create some surprisingly professional results with Sothink DVD Maker and it supports just about any format out there.

It's great to have a portable multimedia device such as a PSP, an iPod or a Zune to watch movies on the go. The problem comes when you need to convert those videos from the PC to a suitable format so that you can watch those videos while commuting or traveling.

Koyote Free Video Converter can help you handle this issue in a very simple way. Far from complicated, bloated converting tools, this easy app lets you convert videos in a snap. You can choose between a wide range of formats, including those which are used in all popular portable devices. Available formats are presented as profiles with set preferences, but you can easily tweak them to suit your preferences.

Koyote Free Video Converter includes a small video window, but sadly it's only intended to watch video frames as the conversion process is working. It would have been nice to be able to use it also as video player to preview the contents of the movie before converting it.

With Koyote Free Video Converter you can easily convert videos to a variety of formats, including those suitable for portable devices.

Renpad PSP Video Converter 1.1.0.1 beta - Convert videos and films to PSP mp4 format, for free

Finally you can watch all your favourite films and videos ‘on the go’ with your Sony PSP, thanks to this free, open source video converter.

The program is still in 'beta' but it seems to work really well. The conversion process is fast, and you can tailor your final PSP-friendly mp4 file, selecting the video resolution, the video quality, the frame rate, the aspect ratio and the quality of the audio. You can also leave the settings as they are for a fast, good quality conversion. We tried with DivX and MPG files and it worked perfectly.

The improvements that could be made are mostly on the management side. It would be good to have a clearer view of the videos available on the PC and which of them have been already converted. The interface could also be a bit more pleasant without damaging its current clearness. It would be also a good idea to show the estimated time for the conversion process and a percentage indicating the status of the compression.

Be prepared to view your favourite videos on your Sony PSP with this useful, fast and free converter.

Tooble 0.0.3.05 - Youtube videos right into your iPod

Saving Youtube videos in your iPod is a real pain. First you have to download those videos with a specific software tool, then you have to convert them to the appropriate format with another tool and finally you have to import them in iTunes.

With Tooble this tiring task is reduced to a couple of simple steps: look for the Youtube videos you want to store in your iPod and import them directly into iTunes. The program lets you browse Youtube right on its interface, either by categories or performing a search. Then you only need to mark those videos you want to download, and Tooble will transfer them to your computer and also convert them from their native FLV format to a more iPod-friendly format.

After that you can import the videos manually into your iTunes movie library or let the program take care of this task too by marking the "Import video to iTunes" option in Tooble's preferences menu.

The only drawback to this handy tool is the fact that it tries to install some adware elements during the installation process. Luckily though you can politely decline the offer and install the program without any undesirable add-ons.

Provided you avoid the adware offered during its installation, Tooble proves to be a handy tool that lets you easily save Youtube videos in your iPod in just two steps.

Videora iPod Converter 3.06 - Convert video files to an iPod-friendly format

Videora Converter claims to convert all your videos to play on your iPod without requiring any “technical know-how” on your part. The program’s process in itself is simple: search and select the desired file, click ’Convert’ and there you have it, ready to play on your iPod.

Despite its simplicity, Videora Converter suffers from a number of shortcomings. For one, the interface, particularly the main window, is riddled with horrible flashing pop-up ads. This makes using the wizard a fairly tedious process and one that you should skip altogether. We were also surprised by the very haphazard video settings. For the video format, you have a choice between “old” or “new”; for the video size “ipod” or “tv”, with no explanation as to what Videora considers the “tv” size to be. Setting quality levels for audio and video continues in the same foggy way: basic, medium, high or best are the only choices you're offered.

The quickest way to convert is under the Current Conversion tab. This interface is probably easier to use than the wizard. Select your file, the device you wish to convert it for and the profile you want to use. Videora has more than two-dozen preset encoded video formats to choose from. While you should find what you want in that list, it would have been good to let users tweak the settings according to their requirements. In terms of your video file library, Videora keeps your created output files in folders, divided according to the devices and video formats. You can also automatically add the converted files to iTunes.

If not for the bewildering interface and extremely vague video settings, Videora Converter could actually have been a very simple iPod converter. In the future, let’s hope Videora makes the wizard actually user friendly and gets rid of all the pop-ups.

IPOD Video Converter for Free 2.6 - Transform your videos to iPod format

IPOD for Free Video Converter is a simple converter which allows you to watch all your favourite videos on your iPod. All configurations for the conversion can be easily accessed and adjusted and so it generally performs it's task pretty quickly and easily. Probably the major advantage of this converter over others is that it can download directly from YouTube and convert the files immediately into iPod format.

This one click downloading and conversion avoids the need for a third party program and makes watching videos on your iPod easier than ever before. Just be careful that you've configured the conversions to convert to the appropriate screen size and quality for your iPod. The final files can be rather large but it's worth it if you can watch your videos on the move.

A one stop solution for iPod addicts that want to take their videos with them.

iSpring Free 3.1 - Create high quality Flash movies from PowerPoint presentations

Finally you can convert your PowerPoint presentation into Flash file so to have the benefits of both formats. Microsoft's popular slideshow tool makes it quick and easy to to create attractive, animated presentations; whereas Flash offers all the benefits of a universal format which can be viewed on any computer and any browser as well as a potentially much smaller file size.

Firstly, you do need to register before you can convert any presentations, but the process will take just a minute. The program integrates perfectly with Microsoft PowerPoint. Put simply, when you have created the PPT presentation, press the 'Quick Publish' or the 'Publish' button, where you can select some options, and that's all you have to do. iSpring also includes a feature which allows you to insert Flash movies into PowerPoint presentations. It's a pity that there is not an option to set the compression rates for specific elements (certain images, sounds, etc.) - as that would make it possible to decide exactly where you want to compromise on quality.

It is also interesting that you can publish your Flash file online, allowing you to access all your presentations wherever you are. After pressing the 'Publish' button, select 'SlideBoom' as destination of your file and type the account details. You can sign up for a free account from the menu as well, and the process is fairly easy and quick.

iSpring lets you easily create your PPT presentations and convert them into a Flash file to share with your co-workers and friends. You can also publish and store them online thanks to a free hosting service.

Free FLV Converter 4.4 - Search, download and preview Flash videos

Have you ever wanted to search for and download your favourite videos without using your browser? Free FLV Converter lets you automatically access sites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, Google and Metacafé without opening anything else.

You can search by keyword and preview each video found in the rather basic interface and also download them in FLV format. After that, you can convert the files to AVI, IPod, IPhone, 3GP or PSP format. It also works vice versa and if the files in question are already in FLV format, it can convert to DivX, Xvid, MPEG, DVD and AVI with automatic HTML embed links. This means you can paste them into your website or blog to share instantly with the world. If you don't require these functions, the program interface still provides a convenient search platform because you can browse and watch videos at the same time. With just one click, you can download the video you are previewing. For ease of use, it allows you to create a download list of videos you want to save. Once it's complete, you can just leave the program to download the videos whilst you get on with something else although unfortunately, it still doesn't support batch downloading.

A very useful application for those who are not content with only having videos on the Internet but also want them on their hard drive but don't want to visit each video content site seperately.

Lots of videos these days (e.g. those you'll find on Google Video or YouTube) are encoded in Flash Video format. The problem is that not all media players support the format, so you'll need to get yourself a third-party app to convert it for you.

Pazera Free FLV to AVI Converter is one such utility and as the name suggest it allows you to transform a Flash Video file into an AVI. The program also lets you convert your FLV video to an MPEG if you so desire.

The program's user interface isn't exactly a visual delight and despite the fact that there isn't an icon in sight, it's pretty functional and you should be able to find your way around pretty easily. All you really need to do is load the FLV file or files that you need to convert using the 'Add Files' button, then click convert. The conversion process seems to be reliable and quick (though obviously this depends on the size of the file).

There are plenty of advanced options to tinker around with if you know what you're doing. For instance, you can adjust the audio and video codecs used, set the resolution or change the bitrate (only for AVI). You can even crop the video on all sides if you want.

If you want a no-frills solution for converting FLV files, the Pazera software is an able piece of software.

SUPER 2008.30 - Simplified universal player encoder & renderer

The evolution of computers reveals a trend towards multimedia centres where users can listen to music, watch videos, surf the net, work and view photo albums. If you’ve gotten your hands on media files, you’ve probably been in the situation at least once where you had to convert the files to transfer them on a different device (such as a phone or an iPod) or in order to play it in another application. SUPER makes audio and video conversion a breeze thanks to a well presented interface and a slew of options.

SUPER’s single window interface is divided into audio and video and the selection of output options is done via the three drop down menus at the top. We appreciated the number of formats available. SUPER allows you to convert movies and music to play on recent devices such as Apple iPod, Sony PSP and 3gp for use on Sony Ericsson and Nokia mobile phones. The huge bit rate menu, from 64 to 9792 Kbps, means you can truly optimize and quicken the conversion process. We were disappointed however that SUPER only offered 2 video codec outputs (H263 and MPEG-4) and 3 audio codecs (AAC, AMR wideband and narrowband).

On the audio side, SUPER allows you to select your language from individual tracks, but audio is limited to one channel and one sampling frequency (8000). It seems the program is more suited to video conversion. Luckily the program includes recognized encoders such as ff mpeg or mencoder, ensuring a decent conversion process for both audio and video.

Use the buttons at the bottom of the interface to play files and check their quality after having converted them. The ’Player Options’ button gives you the chance to tweak video features such as aspect, saturation, hue, brightness and contrast. All files converted or waiting to be converted are visible in a list and you can verify the streaming link and the output status.

In SUPER, we found a very open media converter that even the klutziest of users will get to grips with. If you watch a lot of videos and movie clips and would like to be able to enjoy them anywhere and on any device, SUPER is a program you’ll need to get your hands on.

MediaCoder has set itself as a software referent for video conversions and now is offering the same functionality and capabilities for portable devices.

After releasing a PSP and iPod Touch versions, we've been presented with MediaCoder for Mobile Phone, a new MediaCoder edition that has been especially developed to convert video files to mobile formats such as MPEG-4, 3GP and AVI. While the format selection is not that wide in itself, it should be more than enough to fit most mobile phones nowadays.

The program features three possible interface configurations (Simple, Normal and Expert) from which we recommend the first one, as you don't really need to tweak all the program's settings and it's clearly the easiest to use.

Available formats and codecs can be selected via a drop-down menu: this means you can select them manually, but there are no profiles ready to be used. A standard mobile phone image lets you get an idea of how the video will look like on your device. Sadly there's only one to choose from.

MediaCoder for Mobile Phone converts your favorite videos to mobile compatible formats in an easy, fast and efficient way, so you can carry them anywhere with you.

While Apple is slowly rolling out their highly coveted iPhone across Europe, many developers have started to create software apps to be used specifically with today's most fashionable mobile phone.

MediaCoder iPhone iPod Touch Edition is one of those tools, a video converter that enables you to adapt your favorite movies, shows and video clips to the video formats used both in the iPhone and the iPod Touch. This app is in fact a simplified version of the original MediaCoder that has been adapted to these two new video platforms.

The program features a highly detailed interface that displays all the necessary information for each conversion, including an iPhone-like preview window. In fact, it's so complete that it may feel a bit overwhelming for first-time users.

The confusion still goes on – and even grows – when opening the program's exhaustive configuration menu. But once the initial shock is gone, MediaCoder iPhone iPod Touch turns out to be an excellent conversion tool that works really fast and obtains excellent results.

MediaCoder iPhone iPod Touch is pretty much everything you need to convert and transfer videos to your iPhone or iPod Touch. Just take your time to learn how to use it.

MediaCoder PSP Edition enables you to convert your favorite movies and shows to the video formats used in Playstation Portable, so that you can take them anywhere with you. The interface, just like the iPhone version, feels a bit overwhelming at the beginning, but the program in itself is quite easy to use. There's also an embedded PSP player that allows you to preview the video exactly as it will be viewed on your device.

On the downside, I found the program to be a bit slow at some points, for example when launching it or when opening the configuration menu. Other than that, MediaCoder PSP Edition works fine, just like its older brothers.

In spite of some minor flaws, MediaCoder PSP Edition enables you to enjoy your favorite videos on the move.

iLove 3.5 - Convert your beloved films to watch them on your hi-tech phone

iLove is not meant to test your love skills but it is a powerful phone-compatible video converter for your favourite films and personal videos. That little 'i' at the beginning of the program's name will surely have reminded you of the hi-tech Apple phone. iPhone users in fact are probably the major target for this application. Actually, at the moment there is a great demand for applications to run on iPhone in order to use this piece of hi-tech gadgetry in many different ways.

Don't let the apparently-too-technical-interface put you off; it is actually very easy to select all the different options to tailor your final file. Just drop videos onto any place in the application to start the conversion process. The interface is basically an expanded menu that lets you decide whether to compromise on the quality, to have more films on the phone, or to set the best audio and video resolution to show off to your friends the fantastic definition of your brand new 'touch-screen'. Just for your information, the application will be useful also for Cowon and Archos devices.

The conversion process is fast and the option of having subtitles is interesting indeed. I bet you end up loving this iLove.

Quick Media Converter 3.48 - Convert videos into multiple formats

Quick Media Converter is a flexible and comprehensive solution for converting video and audio with an eye on simplicity, usability and speed.

In fact, it is the speed of this particularly converter that impresses above everything else. It's incredibly fast at processing and converting files although it dies seem to be hit and miss in the final result. For example, some files you may find have not converted quite like they should have or are totally unreadable. It seems that sometimes, the speed is down to the fact that it's not quite processing files in the right way. The interface is very easy to read with all the logos of the possible conversion formats across the top - including FLV, Quicktime and RealMedia. This is sufficient for most users although if you need control over the specifics of the output file there are more options in the Expert Mode tab. From here, you can specify everything from resolution ratios to audio compression and codecs. The problems here arise however if you don't have the right codecs installed. If you try to convert to Xvid or vice versa without the right codecs, then the conversion will either refuse to run. Everything is easy enough to configure via drop down menus and tabs.

A powerful and speedy converter that works across multiple formats although don't be surprised if some of your conversions result in blank videos or unplayable files.

Free TalkMail 1.0 - Send spoken word e-mails

Are you tired of typing all your e-mails or are you just a slow typer and don't have time to reply to everyone?

Then why not speak your responses? Free TalkMail enables users to long, high quality voice emails for free to any email address around the world. The e-mails can then be played back on any PC, Mp3 player and replies can be made for free. It's an ideal tool for mobile professionals who are not in the office regularly and have to shoot off a few e-mails on the move, to college students who just want to have a bit of fun online. The big drawback with this program is that the files are often very large - I don't understand why the developers couldn't have given the files a higher compression ratio or included a small compression utility. The other downside is the interface which looks very archaic. It looks like something out of Windows DOS and there's certainly no scope for changing the skins. Then again, this is not the kind of program you use just to look at - it's designed especially to do one particular function which it does well - the sound quality is good and it's very easy to use.

A useful little utility but it's a mystery why the files are very large and there's no way to change the rather ugly interface.

XviD4PSP 5.0.30 - Full featured video converter for PSP, iPod, iPhone and more

Many portable devices feature video capabilities, but not everyone takes advantage of them as you usually need to convert video files to another format and there's no easy way to do it.

XviD4PSP solves this problem by providing you with an intuitive, easy-to use tool that lets you convert almost any kind of video file to a wide range of formats, including those that most portable video devices (iPod, iPhone, PSP) work with. The program features a highly detailed settings window where you'll be able to configure every single detail about the video conversion. In fact, it's such a complete configuration menu that it'll take you some time to tweak it properly.

XviD4PSP includes an embedded video player where you can preview the video file before applying any change to it. Note that the program requires some extra tools to work but they come bundled with the installation file. And in case you get any warning messages about missing components, you'll probably do fine by just installing a coded pack.

The program features a nicely designed interface, but if there's something I especially enjoyed about XviD4PSP is the huge array of supported video formats. It works with pretty much anything you can play as a video!

In all, XviD4PSP is a powerful tool that comes in very handy for those of you who like to watch movies on the move and therefore need to convert video files very often.

HandBrake 0.9.2 - Free DVD to MPEG-4 converter

Forget paying for a program to rip your DVDs to your computer because thanks to the wonders of open source, HandBrake is here to convert disks to MPEG for free. Considering it doesn't cost a dime, the application delivers exceptional results. Converting any type of DVD through a simple-to-understand UI, the program whizzes through the process of producing an MPEG-4 file to save on your machine.

You'll need to have the right codec installed for the type of file you wish to convert (DivX, Xvid, OGM, 3ivx, etc.) but HandBrake lets you perform two-pass conversions and to codify a double soundtrack. Another great feature is the bitrate calculator, which alters the quality of the video according to the final file size you wish to achieve. You can even trim the black bands around a movie to maximise the size of the file. Although I experienced a couple of crashes with this version of HandBrake, it's nevertheless a great open source solution for ripping your DVDs.

Acala 3GP Movies Free 3.7.5 - Convert video to 3GP, the format for mobile phones

With the expansion in capacity and range of mobile devices, users are increasingly demanding to be able to watch their favourite visual content on the move.

Acala 3GP Movies Free is a professional program for converting Avi, DivX, Xvid, Mpeg, Vob and several other formats to work on mobile devices. The interface is very professional yet easy to use and conversions are usually excellent quality and lightning fast.

The developer claims times of just 10 minutes to convert a two hour movie to 3GP and while this may be a little overstretching it, it certainly works quicker than any other 3GP converter I can remember. The good thing is that the program works in a similar way to a video editor - you can mark the in and out points of your film so you can cut out annoying titles at the beginning and end if you don't want them.

If you've got a lot of files to convert, it also supports batch conversions. You can easily split and preview films as they are converting to see whether the quality is to your liking.

All-in-all, this is an excellent 3GP conversion tool, especially if you need to cut and splice files and are in a hurry.
