RipIt4Me 1.7.1.0 - Backup protected DVDs

Ripping CD's is increasingly difficult because of the protection that manufacturers place on the disks.

Now however, there are some programs strong enough to break that protection such as RipIt4Me. These encryption methods cannot be dealt with by most major DVD rippers and burners because they employ such encryption as ARccOS and RipGuard DVD techniques that totally immobilise programs such as DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter. RipIt4Me is an incredibly powerful ripper which can handle just about any encryption. Of course, it should only be used for non commercial use - such as your own personal backups of your own commercial discs. The program is very simple to use with a "One Click" wizard to take you through the very simple ripping procedure which consists of little more than inserting a disc, browsing to a save location, and off you go. In it's latest incarnation, the program now has an automatic updater and an encryption decoder which detects whether the DVD appears to be protected or not. You'll see this displayed in the main window during the first step of the wizard.

This is a remarkably powerful ripping tool that can rip just about any copyrighted DVD (although not all) but only use it for your own backups.

bitRipper 1.31 - Rip a DVD movie to AVI on the fly

A few years ago the task of ripping a DVD movie to your hard drive was so complicated that not everyone could do it. Nowadays it can get as easier as cicking on a button, which is just the way BitRipper works.

This tool is probably the easiest way to rip your favorite movies to your hard drive, provided they're not protected discs. Simply insert the disc into the DVD player, launch BitRipper and it'll automatically scan its contents and add them to a drop-down menu so that you can select exactly the sections you want to rip, if not the whole disc. Then just click on the "Start ripping" button and you're done! The DVD movie will start to be ripped to your hard drive on the fly, that is, without needing loads of space in your system.

This is probably the best method for average users, but if you prefer to be in control of everything when ripping a movie, you can also customize the program's settings by selecting codec (though only those which work with AVI files), aspect ratio, resolution and other technical details.

BitRipper is probably the easiest way to rip DVD movies to your hard drive, as long as it's not protected material.

DVD Flick 1.2.2.0 - Powerful DVD authoring tool

You probably have lots of different videos and films on your computer you would like to play on your home DVD player. Unfortunately, many DVD players can only read the standard DVD format and it's therefore a waste of resources to burn DVDs with avi, mpeg or wmv files.

DVD Flick comes in handy because it converts PC video files to a proper DVD format, readable by all standard devices. The final file size is much bigger than the original, for example: a 600mb requires a whole DVD. The conversion process is also very slow, but you can leave the program working while you use other applications, as you can select the priority your system gives to the conversion software. The final result will be an audio_ts and a video_ts folder, which is the standard for all DVDs and you can also chose to create an iso file which can be burned again at a later date. It would have been good to have the possibility to add subtitles but unfortunately this feature is missing.

If you are patient enough, DVD Flick is the perfect solution for burning your holiday movie to DVD, meaning that whatever DVD player your friends or family have, they’ll have no escape from your not-quite-Oscar-winning production.

This is a reliable program that does what it's meant to but at the end of the day, DVD Flick is really only going to be useful to people without a multi-format DVD player.

OSCAR G2V9 - Automatic download of subtitles for films

OSCAR is a useful application for downloaders that automatically search subtitles for movies in OpenSubtitles.org. If you're tired of never finding the right subtitles, then you'll be impressed by OSCAR.

Its very easy to use. Just pick a video file or folder containing what you need and click on the magnifying glass (this also can be done using Control + S). OSCAR automatically looks for subtitles that match your videos and the language preferences that you specify. It also supports command-line parameters, proxy support and drag-n-dropping of films and subtitles. In addition, if you have created subtitles for films, you can also upload them via OSCAR to the OpenSubtitles.org community.

As useful as it is, this is still very much a work in progress. There’s still a lot of work to do but the basic functionality (search/download/upload) is there along with some nifty features (such as IMDb support, filename templates and multi-language support) plus more to come according to the developers.

This is a really great tool if you own a ton of DivX or Xvid films that you've never been able to watch because of lack of subtitles or you'd like to distribute to a wider audience.

Ever wanted to create a DVD from one of your video files? DVDforger is a DVD authoring application which creates DVDs from almost any kind of video file as long as the right video codecs are installed.

DVDforger supports multiple titles with multiple audio tracks, subtitles and a simple menu. In essence, it's basically a GUI for a set of free tools including AviSynth, HC Encoder, Aften and DVDauthor. At the end of the process, you should have a DVD complete with menus and separate chapters.

One big advantage of this program is that, to avoid copying huge files, it's not necessary to directly record the film onto a disc as you can simply store it as an image ISO. Another big plus is that it comes preconfigures for conversion of various formats so you don't need to waste precious time setting it up. However, although it claims to support all formats, you may find yourself having trouble working with Quicktime and Realplayer files and there may be others.

BatchDemux 0.14 - Seperate MPEG and VOB audio professionally

If you wish to turn a file MPEG to DVD, there are many applications out there to help you do a basic job. However, if you're going to do it properly and professionally, you'll need a utility like BatchDemux which gives you professional conversion results albeit with a more complicated procedure and interface than you may be used to

BatchDemux is a utility that allows you to convert the audio and video of one MPEG video from a VOB, quickly and thoroughly. If you're doing batch conversions, it can even process several files simultaneously and it utilizes MPTGX and BBCEMUX protocols to give optimum extraction quality.

However, with limited instructions, this takes some time to figure out properly, especially since DVD's vary in structure. Note that it only supports MPEG and VOB files and will not work with other video formats. On the plus side however, it work directly from the .EXE file so does not require installation and although it requires an external application to burn the DVD.

Overall, an excellent solution for professionals although amateur users looking to perform a simple conversion will not need something this thorough.

Any person interested in understanding or modifying the operation of a DVD will be interested in PgcEdit as an excellent freeware program which makes it possible to modify almost all of the information contained in DVD IFO files. PgcEdit offers an easy to understand view of a DVD’s programming. It allows you to edit, via easy to use GUIs, all the DVD’s commands with their legal values, without any limitations except those imposed by the DVD standard.

PgcEdit also has an extremely powerful but easy to use PGC Editor, where you can make changes to stream assignments, subtitle colors, the chapter table, cell and PGC still times, the cell flags, VOB/Cell IDs and many others, again through an easy and intuitive GUI.PgcEdit is also a basic DVD authoring tool – by using its new DVD command, combined with importing menus and titles and its Command Editor, you can author your DVD from scratch. The main drawback is that it takes some time to familiarise yourself with DVD structures but for professional or amateur filmakers, this is an excellent tool.

SmartRipper 2.41 - A DVD Ripper with many unique options

SmartRipper is a free DVD application that you can use to create backups of DVDs on your hard drive. If you’ve got a big DVD collection and need a backup, then this is the sort of program you should be looking for. However, be warned that is only intended for backup purposes and not for duplicating commercial DVDs. The popularity of this program on Softonic is no doubt due to the fact that it is able to bypass many DVD encryption methods. However, development of SmartRipper recently ceased due to the legal implications of this so be sure that you only use the software to backup DVDs on which you own the copyright.

The first thing to know is that SmartRipper does not install itself on your machine. The download simply consists of the binary files including the SmartRipper.exe. All you have to do though is double click on the SmartRipper disk icon and the program interface pops up immediately. Unless you’ve got a DVD disk ready in your drive, the first thing you’ll receive is an error message saying ‘No DVD found’.

To use the program, simply insert a disc into your DVD-ROM drive. SmartRipper will automatically detect it and a short authentication process takes place to ensure that all files are readable. Once done, you’re presented with the main window. The program supports three copy modes: ‘Movie’ (copy the movie only), ‘Files’ (copy selected files only) and ‘Backup’ (copy whole disk). Obviously, the most flexible option is ‘Files’ mode since it allows you to select and deselect the check boxes next to the parts of the DVD you want to save. If you’re new to DVD ripping though, make sure that you know what you are ripping as it may not be clear from the file names on the DVD exactly which ones you want. If you’re unsure what you need from the disk, just start in ‘Backup’ mode and it will save absolutely everything on the disk.

Advanced users will be particularly impressed by SmartRipper. In the bottom half of the screen, the program gives you a breakdown of the technical data relating to each file on the disk. It automatically displays statistics such as the aspect ratio, display mode, resolution and max/min/average bitrate for every chapter. This is not much use for the average user but for multimedia specialists, it could prove useful if you plan to edit the DVD footage later. However, its advanced features go way beyond this, enabling you to refine almost every aspect of the ripping process.

A good example is the way it grabs the audio tracks. In ‘File’ mode, there are three options to choose from – ‘Direct stream copy’, ‘Demux to extra file’ and ‘Extract to new VOB (VOB means DVD Video Object – in other words, data on the DVD)’. ‘Direct stream copy’ does the standard ripper job of taking the 1:1 audio track from the disc. ‘Demux to extra file’ is a great option if you want to save the soundtrack without the video. It enables you to save the audio in a separate file away from the rest of the contents of the DVD. You can only save in WAV format but you could easily convert this to Mp3 with a simple converter. Finally, ‘Extract to new VOB’ does a similar job but the saved file will still be a valid VOB file. This means it can still be re-burned onto a DVD and is really useful if you want to extract the audio, edit it and then replace it back on a disc.

SmartRipper can be as simple or as complicated as you want it to be. It’s this wide appeal which makes this program one of the most popular DVD Rippers on Softonic.

Diko 2.31 - Optimising video conversion tool

Diko is a video converter: it converts many kind of video to fit a DVD-R as DVD-Video or a CD as SVCD. But how DIKO is different from the other video converters around?

For each step of this conversion, there's an optimal way to do it and a optimal software (generally freeware) to use. But using all softwares and learning each step to do an optimal conversion is a time consuming task in two aspects: you have to spend a lot of time learning to use the tools and you have to be around to run each tool. Since video encoding processes takes a while, sometimes this means that you would have to stay all day long around the computer to command one step after the other, besides setting the right options and doing manual calculations.

DIKO is an automation tool: it command many other software to get the best result in this conversion. It's like a super speciallized robot that does the all the calculations, decides what is best qualitywise and gives the right orders to all tools, aiming to get excellent video quality.

FixVTS 1.603 - Eliminate errors in VTS/VOB archive files

FixVTS is a very tiny tool that allows you to adjust your DVD files into better DVD compliance, so they can be opened in DVDShrink or vobblanker. FixVTS does a similar job as what's called an "IFOEdit Mock Strip", but only adjusts as little information as possible in the VOB and IFO files to allow opening in other apps while keeping the DVD as similar as the original as possible

You would use FixVTS if you messed up your DVD, for example by applying the wrong tool, or aborting in the middle of some processing, and the result can no longer be used. Another good use is for DVDs that have been authored with errors in the IFO or VOB files, such that they still play on your player, but won't open in DVD editing tools such as DVDShrink, vobblanker and others. Yet another use is fixing DVDs created by DVD-VR.
