Fast and easy - once you have the access code


Minbox works very well generally but one issue you may have is having to wait for an Access Code. The code is needed to activate the service but you may find yourself having to wait some time before receiving it. Some users have reported this wait can be as much as a few days. However, once you have it, viewing photos in particular looks great thanks to the elegant way that Minbox presents them in a lightbox style format.

MSecure also includes other neat security features such as an auto-lock to stop someone seeing your data if your leave your Mac unattended, strong password generator and a sync tool which the developer claims is as secure as cloud services such iCloud, Dropbox etc.

Easy to use - once its setup


mSecure can be a bit tedious to setup. There's no way to import passwords from an exported file but mSecure will prompt you if you want it to manage your passwords or credit card details that you enter. Once this is done, you don't need to worry about remembering them again.

The syncing with iCloud works pretty well although some users have reported problems and unreliability issues with this. However, not having to enter password details into your iPhone or iPad after having entered them on your Mac is a great timesaver.

Not as good as 1Password but solid


mSecure is very similar to 1Password but the inability to import an exported passwords file and the occasional problems with syncing mean it's not quite as reliable. However, users report that any problems they have experienced have been promptly dealt with by the developers of mSecure.

A very good all round privacy manager


If you want an easier way to manage passwords and credit card details, mSecure is a good choice.

Powerful but not too complex


The other problem with professional special effects video editing packages (such as Adobe After Effects) is that they are usually quite complex to learn and use. Motion treads a very fine line between packing lots of power, but also being easy enough to pick up without weeks of tuition of practice. Although it isn't exactly After Effects, it's not far off but at a fraction of the cost and a much gentler learning curve.

Packed with editing features


Motion is incredibly feature rich for such an economical package. It doesn't offer as much power as After Effects, but it's not far off. The number of features is enormous but includes Smart Motion Templates for instant effects, 2D and 3D modelling, Text Animation plus direct exporting to YouTube and Vimeo. The entire list is exhaustive though and covers just about all the major features you need in a special effects package.

Surprisingly easy to use


The Motion interface is a single-window interface with a familiar look and feel to anyone that's worked with a major image editing application such as Photoshop. It makes it very easy to customize Final Cut Pro titles, Smart Motion Templates make it easy to add special effects and even 2D/3D modelling isn't too complicated. To apply a special effect, just choose from one of the 230 different behaviors.

An excellent alternative to After Effects


For those that can't afford After Effects or don't want the steep learning curve that comes with it, Motion is definitely worth trying.

Train your troops for battle


If you like battlefield strategy games with cute characters and animations, then Battle Nations may still appeal. In Battle Nations, you're in command of an Imperial Army and must assemble an army of troops that can defend your Outpost. Your team consists of soldiers with different personalities such as Sgt. Ramsey, Lt. Morgan, Floyd, Zoey, Perkins, and others all of which have different strengths and weaknesses.

Over 500 missions and 100 vehicles


Battle Nations is a huge game with over 500 missions and 100 vehicles to use. However, as mentioned earlier, your firepower is very much reduced unless you're willing to make in-app purchases for many of these weapons. These include the ability to construct, customize, and fortify your Outpost with things like military installations, shops and barracks. The turn-based combat basis of Battle Nations means its particularly fun to battle your friends and others random players around the world.

Too many in-app purchases


As already mentioned, the biggest drawback of Battle Nations is the number of in-app purchases that are necessary to make it truly enjoyable. It would have been far better if the developer had charged a fee for the game rather than use a freemium model. This is particularly annoying when it comes to having to buy extra lives to continue a game and to speed-up a game in progress. Battle Nations is also a game that requires constant attention - if you don't log on regularly, you'll soon find your territory and troops over run.

Well animated strategic gameplay


The overall graphics and sound in Battle Nations are nothing outstanding but are well animated. The strategic element to the game give it an addictive ingredient, but again, these qualities are offset by the constant need to purchase items, lives and other enhancements.

Fun - for a while


Overall, Battle Nations could be a fun and addictive game but the sheer number of in-app purchases to keep it moving forward really hold it back.

Dungeons and Dragons meets chess


Hero Academy is like chess - but chess with lasers, guns, spells and other weapons. It's therefore a bit trickier to get to grips with than traditional chess and it's recommended that non-iOS players follow the Hero Academy tutorial at the beginning. From here you'll learn how to place units, attack and cast spells. Like chess, your aim is to protect certain pieces, in this case various crystals that are scattered around the board.

It's all about the Action Points


Hero Academy is based on Action Points. The smarter the moves you make, the more Action Points you win and the more special tricks and weapons you can accumulate in order to destroy your opponent and collect the crystals. To make your team even stronger, there's the usual option of in-app purchases ranging from Dwarfs to Elves.

Fun but tedious if you play just one game


Hero Academy is fairly easy to play as long as you follow the tutorial. The most frustrating aspect however is the waiting. If you're playing online, it can take quite a while for your opponent to make a move as there doesn't seem to be a set time limit. However, you can start more than one game meaning you can switch between games while waiting for your opponents to make their next move.

Addictive gameplay


Hero Academy isn't a visually impressive game but the tactics involved make it quite addictive. Anyone who has played chess will understand and enjoy the strategies needed to beat an opponent and the sudden twists in balance of power that can be the result of just one smart move. The overall graphics could be better - they don't display particularly well on Retina Macs for example.


For fans of chess, or those that like Dungeons and Dragons, Hero Academy is an original game with addictive gameplay.

Although it doesn't offer all the functionality of the mobile versions, it's still a very worthy alternative.

Rock-solid syncing with mobile devices


The developer of Viber for Mac is keen to highlight that it has superior mobile syncing than competitor products. Viber does a good job of making sure that wherever you left off on your mobile device, your chats can be picked up. Contacts are also synced, although some users already report some problems with this. You can make calls and video chats with other Macs but you can't yet make video calls to mobile devices or do video conferencing using Viber for Mac.

Slick, easy to use interface


The interface is very elegant and easy to use. Anyone who has used Skype or Messages will have no problems using Viber. You'll need to sign-up for a Viber account if you don't have one, which you are prompted to do when you setup the app.

Reliable syncing and good quality video


Viber for Mac generally syncs very reliably and efficiently and the quality of video-to-video on Mac is as good as anything Skype can offer. However, some users have already reported problems with syncing and the lack of ability to call mobiles is a bit disappointing.

A solid IM and VoIP client


Viber for Mac is a solid IM and VoIP client that's worth trying for anyone that's had enough of Skype and Messages.

More than this however, you can create your own battles against the computer in "Annihilation" and "Control Point" Skirmish modes which test your tactics and endurance to their limit.

Single player campaign


Company of Heroes Complete: Campaign Edition for Mac is a special Mac edition of the game which features the single player campaign from the original Company of Heroes as well as additional campaigns and content from the expansion pack Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor. This is more than enough for hours of gameplay but if you want, you can create your own challenging custom battles against the computer in the newly added Skirmish modes, "Annihilation" and "Control Point".

Complex Skirmish mode


Company of Heroes Complete: Campaign Edition isn't very easy to pick-up for those new to war games. If you've ever played Call of Duty however, you'll have few problems learning how to manage battles and missions. The Skirmish mode is however extremely challenging for even the most experienced players and it will take several hours of play before you're ready to use it.

Good graphics but dated


The all round general graphics and sound in Company of Heroes Complete: Campaign Edition are pretty good. However, this is a game that was originally released more than 5 years ago on Windows and there's no doubt that it's age does show a bit. The lack of a multi-player mode is also a shame - on Windows it is possible but not on Mac.

Realistic but dated


It's taken a long time for Company of Heroes Complete: Campaign Edition to come to Mac but for WW2 and Call of Duty fans, it's definitely worth a try.

You fight for good and freedom on the light side or follow the path of power and evil to the dark side.

First and third person perspectives


Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy switches between first and third-person perspectives with both shooter-style gameplay and of course, Lightsabre combat. The really smart thing about Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy is that the ending is really up to you. Depending on what you do and who you slay along the way, the ending will change.

Optimized for MacBook Pros


There had been some usability issues with Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy even on MacBook Pros due to problems with the graphics card but Aspyr now seem to have fixed the problem, and the game runs very smoothly including on Retina Macs. If you still experience problems, however, set the game to the lowest graphics setting and you should be OK. Unfortunately, there's no gamepad support yet though.

Superb graphics and sound


The graphics and sound in Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy are generally excellent. The game is fully licensed from Lucas Arts so all of the characters you'd expect from a Star Wars epic are present and named correctly. The dynamic plot also makes Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy something a bit different than you're average RPG.

A must for Star Wars fans


Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Knight Academy is a must for all Star Wars fans. Remember that if you've already bought on Windows via Steam, you get the Mac version for free.

With only 500 feet (150 meters) of runway to land and stop your jet on, it's an incredibly hard game that requires careful use of afterburner and throttle.

Lots of jets to choose from


You can choose from F/A-18 Hornet, F-14 Tomcat, C-2A Greyhound and A-6 Intruder, all of which handle in a slightly different way. To improve your technique, you can watch a 30-second replay of your landings and even use your mobile device as a remote control, although this only works with Android devices at the moment. In F18 Carrier Landing you must progress through your carrier, learning to perform patrols and photo reconnaissance and perform flight refueling in your quest to be Top Gun.

Different landing scenarios and conditions


F18 Carrier Landing puts you inside 3D virtual cockpits where amongst the many challenges are In-Flight Refueing and 12 missions, all with a slightly different landing scenario. However, the landings are always on aircraft carriers - it would be nice to see other places such as airbases added in future updates.

One of the most entertaining things about F18 Carrier Landing is watching the multi-camera replays of your landings. This not only helps you improve your technique, but also looks great although unfortunately you can't save them.


Superb high quality graphics


Probably the most impressive aspect to F18 Carrier Landing is the excellent graphics and sound which befit a game with a much higher budget. F18 Carrier Landing provides a highly realistic experience right down to the Head Up Display, weather conditions and realistic sound of the after burners.

A great game - despite the lack of combat


F18 Carrier Landing is a very impressive game that will appeal all wannabe fighter pilots and those that fancy themselves as a Top Gun. The only thing that could improve it is it there were real combat missions and weapons.

BitTorrent Sync Features

BitTorrent Sync uses a synchronization method based on P2P that is innovative and simple. First, simply choose the folder to share. Then generate a secret key (a long alpha-numeric code). Write it down and forward it to the people you want to synchronize your files with. It's as simple as that.

There are 3 types of secret keys to be used according to your needs: keys with read and write access keys with read-only access and disposable keys to be used within 24 hours (read-only or read/write).
Syncing occurs through a direct P2P connection, which ensures a very high transfer rate. Data security is ensured by an algorithm instead of 256-bit encryption.

Simple interface

The interface of BitTorrent Sync is organized in tabs:

Devices shows the computers with which you are synchronized
Shared Folders shows the folders you have shared plus transfers in real time synchronizations, download and upload in progress
History shows you a history of all transfers
Preferences allows you to set BitTorrent Sync according to your needs. You can choose to be notified at the end of a download, whether to set a bandwidth limit for uploading and downloading files and you can choose to run the app automatically when your computer starts.

Very fast P2P file transfers

BitTorrent Sync does not rely on an external server and offers no public file sharing capabilities. These are the main differences between BitTorrent Sync and online storage services such as Dropbox or SkyDrive.

In addition, the use of P2P ensures that you can store and share potentially unlimited amounts of data and during our tests we were impressed by the performance and speed of synchronization of the app.

Our opinion

BitTorrent Sync is an app with great potential. The use of P2P ensures optimum speed for synchronization and data protection is extremely high with a 256-bit algorithm.
