Flock is a browser for blogging and social network addicts. Based on the Mozilla infrastructure, it offers many features found in Firefox like tabbed browsing, quick RSS feed aggregation and customizable toolbars. Thanks to the web clipboard, you can copy any image or text you find on the net. Favorite links can be saved with tags and you can customize your own world, where you showcase your favorite sites, feeds and media. This brings us to one of the main features of Flock, the media bar, placed at the top of the browser. This tool lets you search and view any sort of media from sites like YouTube, Facebook or Flickr.

However the real strength of Flock comes in its social networking integration. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, Xanga, Magnolia and more can be opened up from the "accounts and services" sidebar. Thanks to the people sidebar, you'll be able to quickly see all your friends from your different networks. Flock also offers up a blog editor, from which you can write up all your posts. News junkies will also like the RSS reader, also accessible from the sidebar.

While we were impressed with all the major improvements found in this new release of Flock, we felt that the sidebar was probably a bit overused. RSS feeds, social networks, favorites, and the web clipboard all open up in the sidebar, meaning you can't have them on all at once. The blog editor is a nice touch, but it's a shame that it doesn't allow you to upload images to your blog.

If your high on social networks, Flock is definitely the browser for you.

With Fluid you can access all your web applications from your desktop.

Ever used Prism or Webrunner? Just like these two applications, Fluid allows you to access all your web apps (like Facebook, Gmail or Campfire) from your desktop. Essentially, Fluid is a simple browser that hosts web applications in a very basic interface. Once you start it up, type the url of your web app in the window, select a name and location, press OK and you're ready to go. The advantage of using it is that you free up your browser for other things. It also uses up very little memory and is very fast.

On the downside, Fluid is in a way like a stripped down browser window. No controls, panel bar or preferences, you only get a browser window for each webapp you launch. This also means that most of the features you take for granted in your browser, such as spell-checking, pop up window management or tabs will not work.

Although it doesn't offer the advanced features of a browser, Fluid is a great tool to access your web apps separately on your Mac desktop.

Those of you who are hooked on eBay now have a desktop application to monitor items on the auctioning site. GarageBuy lets you create smart searches, select item categories, payment type or sort of item. It displays images of items and all the information relating to the owner.

Although this process was at times unstable, once you have GarageBuy setup, you can have all your searches saved and even purchase items. Scalp is a nifty little tool to share your iCal calendar with anyone.

This little hack lets you publish a calendar to .Mac via FTP or SFTP. You can set a password and username to protect it in SFTP, in case you want your calendars to be private. Publishing to iCal can be a very good and fast way of actually sharing dates and notes with your friends and colleagues.

Scalp lets you set five different publishing settings: tasks, titles and notes, automatic modifications, alarms and attachments. Effectively you can then almost publish different versions of the same calendar.

Setting up Scalp is a little tricky, especially managing to connect via FTP to your .Mac account, but once it's up and ready, there's no real difficulty to running the program. The application can still be a little unstable though, especially on Power PC, where it hasn't really been tested.

Despite its instability, Scalp is a nifty hack to easily publish iCal calendars via FTP to .Mac.

Syncopation from Sonzea provides a hands-free solution to keep your iTunes music collection synchronized across multiple computers running Mac OS X. Picturesque is the ideal program to add a finishing touch to your pictures, polishing them off before sharing with others.

The application showcases your selected images from the strip on the top of the interface. Just click on one to bring it up and start editing. Picturesque offers five specific effects: perspective, reflection, shadow, curve, and stroke. I was very impressed by the 3D effect given in perspective and the reflection. The way effects are added onto your pictures is also really impressive.

All changes made to an image are saved as presets, which you can view in the list on the right of the interface. This is very handy for batch editing images. Just select the ones you want to change when your preset is set. You can add as many presets as you want.

Although Picturesque lacks any proper image editing tools, it offers a great set of snazzy effects to turn your pictures into masterpieces.

Application Switcher Menu (ASM) is a preference pane that offers a clear view of all your applications. Accessible as a drop down menu from your menu bar it can show any application in a few clicks. You'll be able to customize the preference pane, adding separators, choosing how the icon appears or selection whether the application, the icon or both appear.

One of the most appreciated features of ASM is the Classic Window Behavior, which brings all windows of an active application forward. We suggest using this when you have many programs and folders open and need to focus on one in particular. If you’ve ever had to publish, send or receive particularly large files sizes, you’ll know that it can throw up all kinds of problems – crashed servers, blocked inboxes and transfers that suddenly just hang-up. Pando aims to take the pain out of this process and according to the developers, 3 million people agree that it does exactly that.

Pando is based on a P2P network that enables you to send files of up to 1GB in size by e-mail or by publishing it to the web. It supports all multimedia file types including video, audio and photos meaning it’s great for people who deal with audio-visual files regularly.

For most users, the major benefit will be with e-mail attachments and the good news is, there's no need to change your existing e-mail client. Pando works by creating a torrent-like link file which you can then send in the body of your e-mail for the recipient to click on. There’s no need to be online when the recipient downloads the file and there’s no compression, FTP or dodgy web uploading applets to deal with. The reason you don’'t need to be online is because Pando sends files to its "super-node" servers, which means that there's always at least one "seeder" online at any given time. This seed is guaranteed for 14 days so even if you log off, your recipient can still view it. Obviously, the more people that share it too, the faster the download.

For those unfamiliar with FTP, Pando is fantastic since it works on the same principle as a Bittorrent client. Once the small interface is opened, you can drag and drop or select “add-file” to create a ".pando” file which you can then e-mail to whoever you want once it is uploaded.

The main drawback is that the recipient has to have Pando installed to receive the file. If you transfer files to someone regularly, this is not a problem but if it’'s just the odd file you want to send, then it could be a nuisance to ask someone to install it just to see your file. Be warned also that Pando cannot guarantee security although the developers assure that Pando has 256bit AES end-to-end encryption built in making it technically one of the most secure ways to transfers files online today. The only way that someone could realistically compromise your security however is by hacking into your e-mail account.

Whilst Pando is obviously open to abuse by sharing illegal files, most people go to the major Torrent sites to do that, meaning Pando is refreshingly free of any copyrighted material flying around and causing problems. Overall, it’'s a great solution for those unfamiliar with FTP who need to send big files regularly.

Just because Macs are normally virus free doesn't mean you never have to scan yours. Leopard Cache Cleaner (LCC) is a solid application to scan and clean your Mac of alls sorts of unwanted files. You'll easily remove cache, language localization files and other unnecessary data. If you're worried about crashing your Mac, you can even run LCC in Single User Mode. To protect your Mac, LCC includes ClamAV antivirus, which although quite sluggish, performs deep scans of your system.

We liked how you could adjust a few Mac features, like momentarily shutting off Spotlight or the Dashboard to improve the performances of your Mac. Users would also do well to create automated steps for simple actions like removing cache or scanning the Mac. While the program is not that complicated to use, we felt the interface was slightly counterintuitive. Once you get familiar with it it should be fine though. The name of the program is also a bit confusing: Leopard Cache Cleaner is essentially the same as Tiger or Panther Cache Cleaner, only that it works on Apples latest OS.

A good tool to have around to carry out regular maintenance on your Mac.
