http://solar-walk-3d-solar-system-model.en.softonic.com/mac

Solar Walk - 3D Solar System Model is a hybrid app for the iPhone, iPad and Mac that allows you to explore the solar system in 3D.

The 3D model in Solar Walk is a scaled reproduction of the real Solar System and the latest update is designed to explore not only the Solar System, but the whole Milky Way Galaxy. Among then most interesting features are the ability to view the biggest cities on the globe, the 10 most interesting Earth satellites and points of interests on Mars, Venus, and the Moon. In addition, there are educational videos to inform you on certain aspects of the universe.

You can click and explore just about anything although some stars aren't clickable. Some dwarf planets, moons, satellites and asteroid belts are also missing but in general, the level of detail is superb. The lack of information may be because Solar Walk - 3D Solar System Model was originally released on iPhone and iPad and hasn't been fully developed for the larger screens on Macs.

Solar Walk - 3D Solar System Model is a superb educational tool for anyone with an interest in the universe.

Download Solar Walk - 3D Solar System Model 1.6.2 in Softonic

Celestia 1.6.1-A great way to learn about the universe

http://celestia-mac.en.softonic.com/mac

If you've been gripped by space-travel fever or just want a simple but effective way to learn about the universe then Celestial is a superb learning tool.

Celestial gives you a superb overview of the bigger picture out there by allowing you to explore the universe from the comfort of your armchair. It works by allowing you to navigate your way around the universe using your mouse and when you discover something of interest, you can use your mouse wheel to zoom in. You can also zoom right into planet surfaces or zoom out far enough to see the entire Milky Way.

Obviously, there's no A to Z map of finding your way around the universe and so fortunately Celestial has a "Go To Object" tool found under the "Location" bar. Type the name of the planet or solar constellation you want to see and Celestial magically whisks you there a la Google Earth. I'd recommend running the demo for starters because it takes you on a quick guided tour of everything Celestial can do.

There are a few drawbacks to Celestial. It would have been useful to have annotation of the solar system so that you can see which planets you're approaching or looking as it does get rather confusing browsing through the stars. Also, the level of detail of planet surfaces is a bit disappointing. It's understandable considering the lack of data we have about all the planets but even the Earth has very little detail. However, it should be noted that detail can be expanded using the "Celestial Motherlode" which is a collection of extensions from planet detail to space craft which can be downloaded.

Overall however, Celestial is an excellent learning tool or simply a lot of fun for all those that have an interest in Space and the constellations.

Download Celestia 1.6.1 in Softonic

Station Spacewalk Game 2.5.1.24931-A short experience with NASA on the Space Station

http://station-spacewalk-game.en.softonic.com/mac

Ever wanted to experience space? The world of video games isn't short of space experiences, but they're nearly all science fiction, and usually involve blasting some kind of aliens.

NASA has created a short 3D space adventure, Station Spacewalk Game, allowing you to undertake EVAs (extra vehicular activities), or spacewalks, around the International Space Station (ISS). It's more education than game, but anyone interested in space travel will find it interesting.

Using the excellent 3D plug-in Unity, the Station Spacewalk Game gives you four missions to complete, maintaining and fixing the ISS, and heading out to collect lost tools, while making sure you have enough oxygen to get back to the airlock.

It's a pretty short game, although improvements are promised, such as unlimited exploration, which will be a big improvement. The controls are via the keyboard and mouse, and while there are a few keys to learn, you can have a control list on screen at all times. Also, the pace is very slow, so there's no rush to find the right key!

While Station Spacewalk Game requires a light touch on the controls, it's not too hard and the gentle, slow pace of the game is fantastic. The model of the station is good, though it's a shame Earth has pretty poor resolution, as that would really make it a beautiful experience.

Thanks to Station Spacewalk Game there's no excuse not to realize your childhood dreams of being an Astronaut, at least in a simulation!

Download Station Spacewalk Game 2.5.1.24931 in Softonic

http://lastrologue.en.softonic.com/mac

What's your astrological sign and your ascendant? What mood are you in today? L'Astrologue claims to be able to tell for you. We liked the colorful interface, composed of the astral calendar, and which lets you add elements like planets or objects easily. The dynamical astra chart is fun to use and will show the progression of your sign. L'Astrologue doesn't limit itself to astrology and also features other beliefs like biorhythms or numerology.

L'Astrologue looks good and is all around accessible but real guidance for first time users is lacking . There's no help guide available nor are there any explanations to the different features in the program. For one, we could not understand how you can edit your data like town or birthdate.

WMF Viewer 2.6.3-View and convert WMF images

http://wmf-viewer.en.softonic.com/mac

Windows Metafile (WMF) is a graphics file format native to Windows systems, which originated in the early 1990s.

They usually contain both vector and bitmap components, but are only usually used in illustrations and content created in drawing or presentation applications. For example, most clipart in Windows is in the WMF format. Normally there's no way of working with them on Macs unless you have a special application, such as WMF Viewer.

WMF Viewer allows you to view WMF files on Mac and also convert them to vector and raster formats, including PDF(vector), EPS, JPG, GIF, TIF, PSD, PICT, PNG, BMP, SGI. There's not a great deal you can do with them beyond that though, other than navigate through a series of images using the arrow keys, or rotate them using the handy rotation dial. All the conversion file formats are listed in the drop-down menu in the bottom-right, and you can convert either one image at a time or a batch of images, using the 'Convert' or 'Convert All' buttons at the top. You can also change the resolution exported to although this is limited to 4 presets - 72, 150, 300 and 600 dpi.

There's nothing fancy about WMF Viewer, but if you have to work with Windows WMF files its a quick way to view or convert them.

Download WMF Viewer 2.6.3 in Softonic

http://voyager.en.softonic.com/mac

Go beyond the confines of the Earth and explore the Universe with this planetarium-style computer program. Its fascinating to see 3D simulations and navigate through the solar system and all the stars outside it.

What does the sky look like from Vega or the Pleiades? Finally, you can experience these beautiful views for yourself.
Voyager 4's stellar database is a complete and comprehensive compendium of data on more than 2.

5 million stars. View the components of binary stars such as Alpha Centauri, or the 'Double Double' in Lyra - orbiting each other over hundreds of years.

Using the program will not be as difficult as you might expect for this sort of application. Its tools are quite intuitive although you will have to try it a bit before being able to really enjoy the experience.

That said, there are so many functions and options you can get lost! I liked the Solar Neighbourhood feature which allows you to select the distance in light-years and see all the stars discovered so far, and of course rotate them to better understand their spatial postition.

It's both a professional tool for researchers and students, and an effective way for teachers (or parents) to show their students how things really work out there.

Especially in this field, a navigable 3D rendering of the Universe will be much more effective than pages and pages of text.
Discover the Universe in a fascinating way with Voyager 4.

Download Voyager 4.5.5 in Softonic

Satscape 2.02-Track satellites on your desktop

http://satscape.en.softonic.com/mac

I don't know about you but I'm not planning to launch any satellites into Space soon. However, with Satscape you can at least pretend to be working for NASA, tracking satellites orbiting the Earth.

Unfortunately the results are a little disappointing, though. Satscape is a cross-platform application for tracking supposedly over 8,000 satellites and even debris orbiting the Earth in real time. In fact, according to developer 'Everything from the International space station to a misplaced spanner can be tracked right on your screen with no special equipment'. The developer regrets, however, that Satscape doesn't currently track Santa (although every Christmas Google Earth does, if you really must).

When you open the Satscape download file, a Java downloader retrieves the program from the Satscape database. It requests unrestricted access to your machine which I'm not really keen on but hey, you have no choice if you want to use it. When you've finally dealt with all these access requests, the application can be launched from your desktop upon which you're immediately welcomed by a Steven Hawking-type voice. The 'robot' asks you to configure your settings, although it's not particularly clear how you do this.

After changing very little, I entered my location in the Location tab and saved the settings. Although there are no further instructions, you then click either 2D or 3D view to see the satellites in action. While I was hoping to see a nice revolving image of the globe with all the satellites, lost spanners and astronauts orbiting it, all I got was a choice of viewing two satellites, one of which was labeled ISS, which I presume was the International Space Station. There was no information about what the other satellite was supposed to be used for.

Overall, Satscape felt way too technical and confusing for a newcomer to this kind of thing. Apparently it issues voice warnings when a satellite is about to pass overhead and I can see how this could be useful for a TV satellite engineer on the ground here or other entity seeking to make contact with a satellite. For everyone else however, there's not much enjoyment or interest to be had in Satscape, unless you just want to follow the International Space Station.

Satscape is probably too technical for most people to figure out but if you have an interest in tracking satellites and are willing to persevere, then it may be one of your few options.

Download Satscape 2.02 in Softonic

http://astrograv.en.softonic.com/mac

If you're into gazing at the stars then you might find AstroGrav an excellent way to do so without even touching a telescope.

AstroGrav allows you to simulate how astronomical objects move and interact under the force of gravity. It features some impress interactive 3D graphics which allow you to move around within virtual astronomical system, while watching how it evolves with the passage of time.

There are a wide variety of sample environments included in the program such as Solar System, space mission, and abstract systems. These enable you to experiment with the software without having to enter any of your own data. However, if you are some kind of astronomical whizz, then you can also edit and create your own astrological environments. However, this is very complex and only for those that are either professional astronomers or have specialised knowledge of the solar system and how the coordinates of stars work.

For astronomers and space fans, AstroGrav is a fun and highly customisable astronomy program that's as enjoyable as it educational.

Download AstroGrav 1.7 in Softonic

Thanks to this little widget, you don't even have to go to the NASA website to check out NASA TV. The widget loads up straight from your Dahsboard and will automatically show you whatever's on at the time.

Image quality can vary though and also be aware that the widget can be quite memory intensive so we suggest having it removed from your Dashboard when you're not using it. Similarly, it probably won't perform as well if you have a lot of applications or widgets open.
