TrailRunner 1.8v275 Beta - Plan your running and cycling routes

TrailRunner is a great little app if you want to plan out a route, whatever it is you want to be doing, whether hiking, running cycling or looking for directions.

The applications integrates maps with notes and a route data graph in a well designed interface. When creating a route in TrailRunner you can zoom into the map and pinpoint specific areas. The program also shows directions. It can load information and elevation data from openStreetMap and display routes in Google Earth.

TrailRunner wouldn't be of any use if it did not work with portable devices. Luckily, data and routes can be easily synced with your iPod or GPS device. Even better, if you use a Garmin Edge or ForeRunner you'll be able to handle your workouts from the Garmin Training Center. Maps can be exported to your mobile device as NanoMaps.

Obviously TrailRunner isn't immune to the odd bug every now and then, and you might notice it doesn't always find directions, but overall it works well.

TrailRunner is an excellent application to plan your own route and sync it to your mobile device.

OsiriX 3.2.2b3 - Process DICOM images

This program’s name will probably remind you of the Egyptian god of life, death and fertility, Osiris. In fact this application has something to do with all these matters, as it’s a medical tool to view scanned sections of the body.

It is meant for professional users and while I doubt you have an x-ray machine or an electro-magnetic scanner in your bedroom, you might learn something by looking at the demos available. You actually have two very big samples to download, with lots of DICOM images (the standard for radiological and non-radiological medical images). What does it have this kind of image file more than a JPEG? Well, a lot. You can see the picture in 3D, zoom in, discovering details, basically you can navigate within the picture, even turning it upside down if you wish. This gives you a perfect idea of the shape of human organs and could be useful for any science student or generally curious person.

OsiriX is used by doctors and while they may find it fairly easy to use, non-professional users might find it intimidating and difficult understand at first. You might find it useful to quickly read the relative wiki to find more DICOM images to download and understand how to use the 4D functionality (a 3D image with a temporal event in it, like the heart beating). It’s not easy to view what you would like, unless you find an online source of DICOM images or you have your own magnetic resonance imaging machine.

The human body is fascinating and OsiriX allows you to analyze it with 4D images that you can zoom in on and explore. It might be difficult though to find DICOM images which you are interested in.

Diet Sleuth X 5.1.2 - Organize your diet

Diet Sleuth is one of the most complete diet software programs available for both Windows and the Macintosh. It is a nutritional database and personal health logbook.

Diet Sleuth allows you to keep track of what foods you eat each day, and their nutritional value. For each day, you select the foods you have eaten, and the number of servings of each. Diet Sleuth will automatically calculate your caloric intake, fat grams, carbohydrates, fiber, protein, cholesterol, along with sodium, potassium, and calcium. You can select from over 5000 different foods from 21 categories, including fast food, lunchmeat, junk food, seafood, and baby food.

In addition to the included food groups, you can create and edit your own foods in a separate catagory. You can also create a category of favorite foods to quickly access commonly used foods. In addition, you can enter nutritional information for your own custom foods. Diet Sleuth users can exchange custom foods with each other.

A built-in Recipe Editor allows you to quickly enter a custom recipe, with the nutritional information automatically calculated, based on the ingredients.

Diet Sleuth can also keep track of your daily weight, and calculate your EER or Estimated Energy Requirements, which is an estimate of how many calories you burn each day, based on various factors. This lets you estimate how much weight you can expect to lose on a given day, based on your caloric intake.

Time Out 1.5b1 - Break reminder tool with micro-breaks

It is very easy to fall into bad habits when using a computer for hours on end. You care about what you are doing, so can sometimes push yourself too far, or over-strain yourself. The human body isn't built to sit in one position for endless hours, gripping a mouse or typing on the keyboard. Dejal Time Out is here to help. It will gently remind you to take a break on a regular basis.

Time Out has two kinds of breaks: a "Normal" break, typically for 10 minutes after 50 minutes of work, so you can move about and relax, plus a "Micro" break: a very brief pause of typically 10 seconds every 10 minutes, so you can remember not to tense up too much for long periods. You can disable either kind of break if desired, and the breaks are automatically paused when you go away from your computer, and can be reset when you come back.

You can configure how long each kind of break lasts, and how long between breaks. Each Time Out is announced via the screen slowly dimming, with related graphics materializing, and when the break is complete, it fades out again. You can change the time these transitions take... and you can even change the color and the level of transparency during the break. So if you like, you can make it mostly transparent so you can continue reading while on your break... though it's better for you if you give your eyes a rest during the Time Out.

siRNA's, or short interference RNAs, are widely used in biological model systems to inactivate genes of interest. Recently, a plasmid based RNAi system has emerged based on a DNA vector called pSUPER. However, designing primers to make the pSUPER constructs can be an error prone and time-consuming task. iRNAi was made as a tool to help scientists quickly design error free oligos.

4Peaks is a program that helps molecular biologists to visualize and edit their DNA sequence files. At last there is a decent solution for analyzing trace files on the MacOSX platform, taking another step away from slow and non-native programs from the MacOS9 period. Also, 4Peaks supports most commonly used sequence file formats right out of the box, you no longer have to convert them first using AppleScripts or other painstaking methods. Analyzing your sequence was never so much fun!
