Dejumble 1.2 B19 - Organize your life

Busy people know the importance of staying on top of tasks. Dejumble is a menu bar item to always have a hand on what comes next.

The application, which offers seamless iCal integration, lets you create your own tasks, adding notes, tags and a due date and time. You can also create groups into which tasks can be organized. Dejumble doesn't include an alarm and won't let you create iCal events though.

Your tasks are shown in a list, which can be extended and viewed in three different ways: all, today's tasks or past due. Unfortunately Dejumble won't show you the due time unless you click on the quick look button and open it up.

We liked the search box at the top, which made tasks immediately accessible. Thanks to search as you type you don't necessarily need to know how you named a complete task to find it.

Despite lacking a few elements like event creation or alarms, Dejumble is a solid application to create and access new tasks. It also features perfect iCal integration.

Things is an innovative task management program for Mac, which GTD (Getting Things Done) adepts will be comfortable working with.

Things lets you easily create tasks and organize these by project. You can set them for a given date or delay less important ones by placing them in the 'Someday' category. Things syncs perfectly with iCal so that any newly created task of project appears in the Mac calendar.

To keep your tasks organized, Things lets you add tags. The more you add the easier it will be to find and identify a task. You'll also notice tags appear at the top of the interface.

If multiple people are working on a same project, Things lets them collaborate and remembers contributions from each person.

I've found Things enjoyable to work with, although I would have liked it to interact with more applications like Address Book.

Things is a smart and friendly task management application for Mac.

Syncing information has become really important, simply because we all have all sorts of accounts on the web and usually more than one devices to work with.

Spanning Sync is a nifty little app that syncs your Google Calendar and iCal together. The app is really easy to set up on your Mac. It gets installed in your preferences pane and all you need to start using it is your Google login details.

Once open, just select either the calendars or contacts tab depending on what you want to sync. If you have more than one calendar and contact group on either iCal or in Google, you can select which ones to merge or sync them all together. You'll have to choose between either merging or simply replacing one with another. Also beware that Spanning Sync does not support same contact info yet, so if you choose to merge some of your contacts might appear twice.

A real handy tool to merge your Google Calendar and iCal. Fast and simple, gets the job done.

FlexCal, previously known as FlexTD, is a preference pane item that allows you to quickly enter todos and events in your iCal.

The application is activated via a hotkey, which you can set. Then all you need to do is type in your note, select the calendar it applies to, a priority level and the relevant dates.

The interface is clear and well designed, making it very easy to type in new entries.

FlexCal makes your calendar very easily accessible and avoids you wasting time having to open up iCal every time you come up with a new idea. Being a preference pane item, it doesn't take much space in your Mac yet can still be called up every time you need it.

If you find that you very often work with iCal, yet get tired of opening and closing the application just for writing up to-dos and new events then FlexCal should come in handy.

PreMinder Beta 0.7.2 - An alternative calendar for Mac

Tired of iCal? PreMinder, which is still in Beta, makes for a potentially viable alternative.

First of all, don't worry about losing all your iCal info and events. PreMinder lets you easily import all iCal information. The application is built in a multi-windowed interface, which has always turned me off a bit, as I find it unpractical to work. Not only do you have the big calendar window, but also the reminder window at the bottom, an events window on the left and a floating mini-calendar.

PreMinder provides multiple ways of scrolling through items, from a very handy monthly slider at the top to the daily notifier on the left or the quick back and forward buttons in the Calendar window.

PreMinder lets you create your own events, alarms and reminders. These can be repeated, stretched to multiple days or weeks and moved around very easily.

The search box at the top right of the PreMinder interface makes it easy to find any piece of data in seconds.

Although still in development, PreMinder is a promising alternative to iCal with lots of flexibility and features.

Chandler is an open source organizer which lets you create and save notes and organize them in your calendar.

Although at first I found the interface a little cluttered, it really seems to have everything you need. The quick entry section at the top, which you could mistake for a search bar, lets you create notes quickly. Detail on your notes is shown on the right side of the interface. Chandler also displays a calendar, which you can browse through to see notes for each day.

In place of tags, Chandler has what it calls collections. These work more or less the same way, however I've found them to be slightly less flexible.

Chandler allows you to easily import and export information, mostly as CSV files and you can share your notes with others, by using the Chandler Server and Hub Sharing Service.

One of the best features of Chandler is that you can customize it with any sort of plugins found on the website.

Despite a slightly cluttered interface, Chandler is a solid open source note taker and organizer.

Nowadays online applications like Google or Yahoo! Calendar can easily be shared with other people. If you use iCal on Mac it's not that easy though. BusySync therefore comes in handy, as it lets you sync up multiple iCals to keep everybody up to date on upcoming events. From the BusySync interface, you'll be able to select the calendars you want to share and the rights you want to give to other users (read, read or read & write).

Using the Subscribe, you'll be able to monitor when calendars were synced and with whom. If you've been disconnected for a while, BusySync will automatically sync as soon you connect your Mac to your network again. BusySync works with the reliable Bonjour networking to sync iCals.

A nice feature to have to share iCal calendars with others.

Today will come in handy to those of you that need to have a quick view of the tasks and events for the day. The application synchronizes perfectly with both iCal and Apple Mail, so any event or task you create in them will appear in Today. If you select a different calendar in iCal, Today will also take that into account and only show related tasks and events.

You can also use the application to create your own tasks and events, although you will not be able to add an alarm, set attendees or attachments. Today can be opened from either the menu bar or Dock for quick access.

Today almost works like a widget. You can bring it up in a click and have an overview of all the tasks and events for the day. It's perfect if you need to focus and do not want to open up iCal. Having it perfectly synchronize with iCal and Apple Mail means you never have to worry about if events and tasks are updated on all your different applications.

Although offering basic event and task creation, Today is a great tool to immediately see tasks and events for the day. It boasts perfect synchronization with iCal and Apple Mail.

Scalp is a nifty little tool to share your iCal calendar with anyone.

This little hack lets you publish a calendar to .Mac via FTP or SFTP. You can set a password and username to protect it in SFTP, in case you want your calendars to be private. Publishing to iCal can be a very good and fast way of actually sharing dates and notes with your friends and colleagues.

Scalp lets you set five different publishing settings: tasks, titles and notes, automatic modifications, alarms and attachments. Effectively you can then almost publish different versions of the same calendar.

Setting up Scalp is a little tricky, especially managing to connect via FTP to your .Mac account, but once it's up and ready, there's no real difficulty to running the program. The application can still be a little unstable though, especially on Power PC, where it hasn't really been tested.

TinyCal makes either your iCal or Google Calendar accessible from the menu bar. You'll be able to see all your calendars immediately.

TinyCal appears in your menu bar as a drop down item. Even though the icon will not show the month nor date it will display the day. You can set multiple calendars to appear from the drop down, and have them either in a line or a row. TinyCal integrates both Google Calendar and iCal well, which does come in handy if you have different notes saved in each. It will also display days with corresponding events, which are shown right under the calendar.

One of the strengths of the applications is that it is not limited to the Gregorian calendar but will also show Buddhist, Hebrew, Islamic and Japanese. Our only disappointment though is that you can't set the start day of the week, and will have to settle with Sunday.

TinyCal works great at integrating both your Google and iCal calendars.

EasyTask Manager 2.0 - GTD task manager

Are you familiar with GTD (Getting Things Done)? It's a task management system that is supposed to help you be more productive and handle tasks and projects, both long term and short term.

EasyTask Manager is an application which supports GTD. You start by creating your different projects, then filling these with actions. You'll have to process your actions by putting them into the correct category. EasyTask Manager respects GTD terminology, so you'll find the traditional inbox, next actions, next days and someday folders, among others.

Once an action is finished, make sure to mark it as completed. EasyTask also allows you to sync your projects regularly. You'll have to enter an importance level, start and due date and ensure your tasks are in the correct context.

If there's one thing I could complain about, it would have to do with the flexibility of the interface. Don't get me wrong, EasyTask works great, but it still doesn't match Omnifocus.

Still, if you're a big fan of the GTD method, you should find EasyTask Manager to be a good productivity tool.

DoBeDo is a widget to handle your to-do lists from your Dashboard.

Much more than a simple widget, DoBeDo allows you to control your lists like a real GTD application. You'll be able to manage your items, adding and deleting them from the list. The interface is simple and clear making your lists accessible at a click. You can choose from four different styles and either a basic or detailed view. Items can be sorted by date, favorite list or randomly and you can show completed, future or both types of items.

The real strength of DoBeDo is its integration with both iCal and Apple Mail. Thanks to this, you can link up events from your iCal and emails from Mail. This is a great of way of managing multiple items through just one, easy to reach interface. If you need to, DoBeDo also allows you to quickly print out your lists to take them with you anywhere. While it can feel a bit sluggish at times, the widget is very handy most of the time.

In all, DoBeDo is a very handy to-do list widget with great iCal and Apple Mail integrations.

Curious as to the different phases of the moon? You can install this Moon Phase Calendar for iCal to keep track of them.

The calendar is for the period from 2008 to 2015 and will give you both the name and percentage of a moon cycle. For example 75% is disseminating and 25% waxing crescent. Moon Phase Calendar is essentially an ICS file, which you will need to save somewhere where your sure not to lose it. Double click on it to launch it in iCal. You'll then have to select which calendar to associate it to.

It would have been nice to see a bit more information in the Moon Phase Calendar, like some details of the different moon cycles or an image of what the moon looks like during one of them. Still, Moon Phase Calendar is very simple to add to your iCal and doesn't take much space either. You can even edit the events if you wish to add your own details or an alarm.

There's a plethora a task management tools out there and it's not always easy to choose which one is best for you. What ToDo is a clean application to handle your to do lists easily.

The application organizes your projects in folders, which are saved on the left side of the interface and you can create as many subtasks as needed. The tree view in the main part of the interface can be extended or collapsed and you just need to check a task that is completed. It will then appear as greyed out.

What ToDo allows you to set a due date, thanks to the calendar in the right window pane, and you can add color and bold for important tasks. What ToDo also makes it really easy to import and export todo lists at will. If you work with the Quicksilver application launcher you'll be glad to know that What ToDo integrates perfectly with it.

What it doesn't integrate with, surprisingly, is iCal. We were also disappointed not to find any search box. Although the program is easy to use, we would have liked to see a startup tutorial, so new users can learn how to create a new project.

WhatToDo is a simple task manager with a good tree view and an easy way of creating new projects and tasks.

It can be a bit of a pain to have to open up iCal every time you want to look at your events. This little widget gives you access to them straight from your Dashboard.

With iCal Events you can select which event calendars to show and how many days to display, from today to two weeks. For each day the widget will display events with corresponding time and the calendar color code. Clicking on an event will automatically open it up in iCal.

Task Coach 0.67.0 - Your friendly task manager

Task Coach will take care of all your pending tasks, as well as important dates and meetings, so that you never forget any of them again and you can also prepare them ahead of time. By organizing your tasks in a better way, you'll notice an increase in your productivity, making use of your time in a more optimized way and therefore gaining time for other tasks - or to enjoy your hobbies once work is over.

The tasks in Task Coach can be organized in categories and seen as list or tree structure. They can also be configured separately, which means that each one of them will have its own title, description and percentage of effort that has been applied on its completion. Plus, the program can be run from a removable USB device, so you can take it anywhere with you. If you don't have your USB memory stick with you, then you can always export the task list to HTML.

It would have been nice to have more exporting formats, as well as other small tools we missed like task reminders. But these are just little details that we can forgive in such an useful application.

Use Task Coach and improve the way you organize tasks. Boost your productivity and save time!

Anxiety 1.0 - Lightweight to-do management

Anxiety is a new to-do list app built specifically for Leopard. It synchronizes well with Mail and iCal and serves up a discreet yet attractive interface.

The application makes use of Leopard's Calendar Store function so syncing with both Mail and iCal works seamlessly. We enjoyed the sleek dark grey interface, which lists up tasks, with the total number appearing at the bottom of the window. You can check or uncheck these and swap between different lists by clicking on the drop down title list.

Anxiety also makes it very easy to create and add new notes in a second. You can also choose to have the program's icon appear either in your menu bar or on the Dock. Anxiety can hide away when inactive and appear at login.

Anxiety is a simple, unassuming yet attractive to-do list which syncs perfectly with Mail and iCal.
