MacFamilyTree can even be used to create family reports and create contact information via ID cards for your family. The impressive 3D effects it adds to family trees makes navigating it really slick. Most recently, MacFamilyTree has been updated to allow users to search online for your family history, a service which currently is free to use. You can also publish your family trees and history to the web if you have a MobileMe account.

The main drawback of MacFamilyTree however is the fact that it doesn't have the search power and social interaction aspect that something like say Genes Reunited has. It's also prone to lags and crashes when family information files grow quite big according to some users, meaning that you might have problems managing large family trees.

Overall however, MacFamilyTree makes discovering your family tree a slick and easy experience.

Book Hunter uses dynamic links to update fields automatically from the net. It allows you to create custom libraries and themes, make a list of future purchases, organize books, create reading lists, wish lists, and more.

Book Hunter does this in a slick Mac OS X style interface which includes thumbnails of book covers.

Book Hunter also includes self updating smart-lists from Amazon, links for associated images, videos and files, network syncing plus Quick Look, Address Book, and iCal integration. Although Book Hunter lacks some of the advanced features of applications like Librarian Pro, it's still a very solid application and a great introduction to book cataloging.

We found that iMedia cleverly manages to unite all media files under one interface. And yet, we sometimes felt that browsing movies or music in the application was not all intuitive. For some file types it just seems more natural to browse from separate applications like iTunes for music. Because iMedia fits all your media files in one place, it can feel a bit cluttered. However some people will find this much more useful to browse through their files quickly and get preview of what is on their Mac.

All in all, iMedia Browser is a useful program to view all your media files from one place.

Enter DiskTracker, a simple cataloging utility that helps you keep track of your offline files. If you have several removable media disks, DiskTracker is ideal because it will maintain a local directory of files on removable disks meaning you can search for files without actually having to insert the removable media. As a result, you can still search for items using Spotlight even if the disks aren't connected to your Mac.

One concern is that DiskTracker has been in a beta for some years now and it's strange that the developer hasn't been able to iron out any bugs that have prevented a full release being made. It's possible that it doesn't have much time to administer it because there's no doubting the interface is very dated. However, it has to be said that it seems very stable and if you use a lot of external drives, could mean you find it more useful that Spotlight to find data on your machine.

If you've got a lot of removable media devices, and you're constantly forgetting where your data is, DiskTracker is a simple but highly effective solution.

You can customize the layout of lists you export and send them to the web or to your iPod. Librarian can also import elements from mulitple sources, like borrowers from your Address Book or item information from a number of sites. You can view your Amazon cart from the application and even retrieve things like album covers.

Librarian Pro is a great program to keep updated lists of your favorite items and always be aware of who's borrowed what from you.

The full screen mode, which shows all the album covers, is a nice way of browsing through your titles. Bookpedia also streamlines the way you can create smart collections to keep all your different books organized. We also quite liked being able to create a book wishlist or at least seeing the one you have on Amazon. Bookpedia also lets you keep a note of who has borrowed which book and can generate all sorts of statistics on your collections.

While scanning book bar codes with your iSight camera worked most of the time, it can fail every once a while. Always make sure there's sufficient light and that the bar code is clean. One other little drawback we could also point out is that Bookpedia doesn't let you sort by author last name.

Apart from that, Bookpedia is a top notch application to keep your book collection organized.

Music Box is simply a handy database for your music files that aims to help you organize them and keep them in order. It allows you to instantly find which CD or DVD a particular track appears on and organize your tracks into as many categories and subcategories as you need. You can also read and edit the meta data information of the tracks - including ID3 tags, iTunes tags and AAC tags. You can edit most major music formats including MP3, AAC, MP4, Ogg Vorbis, Monkey's Audio and FLAC.

If any of your songs are unlabeled, Music Box will automatically try to retrieve information using either the MusicBrainz or Amazon CDDB database. Of course, in addition to all this, tracks can also be grouped by artist, album, genre, volume or category. Mostly Music Box is easy to follow and use. However, there do seem to be some issues with tagging. Occasionally random characters may plague your track names and album listings although for the most part, it works very well.

MusicBox is an extremely powerful music tagging and cataloging tool for those that need complete control over their collection.

Making use of the latest Apple technology, Media Catalog offers a powerful search tool, which comes in extremely useful once you've been cataloging a good deal of media. You'll also notice the Quick Look tool at the bottom, to get a fast preview of elements.

I enjoyed how Media Catalog always seemed to keep everything well organized. Even better was the statistics section, which gives you extra details on files like size, update or number of volumes.

Now Media Catalog can take some time cataloging your media, especially if you're throwing at it big sized files, however in general its works extremely quickly.

Media Catalog is an excellent and fast application to index all your media.

This application will store anything, be it document, video, image or more. The application offers you a wide choice of ways to save all these, whether by fitting them into groups, labeling, creating smart lists or even adding notes.

You'll also always be see the exact number of items in each area from the sidebar of the program.

It luckily also integrates Spotlight, making it really effective at quickly finding anything.

New items will open up in tabs, which is either annoying or useful, depending on what you want to see. I personally would like to be able to control tabs how I want.

Together also includes an embedded browser to preview bookmarks and links, which is more or less like a simplified version of Safari. Importing is fairly quick most of the time and you can see files being added to categories in real time.

Flick! helps you document all of your creations and record a wide range of data including medium, dimensions, date and much more. You can also keep track of details of clients, create mailing lists and produce an assortment of useful reports.

Using Flick! is generally fairly easy with a pleasing interface although it can be a bit sluggish at times. This may be partly because underlying Flick! is the FileMaker Pro database engine which makes it rather bloated. However, the workflow is logically organized so that you never wonder what you have to do next to fill in a field or enter data.

One handy feature is the ability to upload pieces of art and work to Flick! which helps you when remembering what is what in your database. This includes images and even video.

Flick! is a niche program that will only appeal to artists with large amounts of work to catalog and apart from the sluggishness, it's a decent app.
