EvoCam is the program to turn to if you're looking to have better control on your Mac's webcam. Working equally well with iSight as with other external webcams for Mac, EvoCam lets you record, view and stream videos straight from your webcam to an external server.

EvoCam comes with a number of filters to spice up your videos and you can choose whether to include or not the audio. The program also features more than two dozen animations to slip into your window. EvoCam features motion sensor recording, so that the app only records when the webcam identifies movements.

iSpQ VideoChat is a desktop conferencing software but mainly with a view to helping you meet new people rather than arrange business meetings. iSpQ VideoChat effectively connects you with people from around the world in a live video chat community. There are hundreds of different iSpQ VideoChat public directories, private chat rooms, and an online contact list for you to choose from and meet people although how many people you will find online in each one is a little hot and miss.

On the plus side, the video conferencing interface of iSpQ VideoChat is elegant and easy to use with very high resolution images supported. You can also view other people's profiles and photos before you chat to them but you've only got access to this if you're a paid subscriber which leads to the main problem. iSpQ VideoChat seems little more than an online dating or singles club for those looking to hook up although if that's what you're looking for, and you don't mind paying for contacts, you may well like it.

iSpQ VideoChat performs no miracles when it comes to conferencing software but if you're looking to meet new people around the world and chat in real time, it could be for you.

macam is a godsend if you want to make your new USB webcam finally work on your Mac.

macam is essentially a driver, which supports a very wide range of webcams. The application can be a little tricky to set up but is the easiest and quickest way to make your USB webcam work. Using the macam interface you can test the video quality of your webcam and adjust elements like contrast, color, sharpness thanks to a few sliders.

However if you really need to make your camera work with an external application like Skype, you'll need to drag the macam component folder you get in the disk image into your Library>Quicktime>folder. The component works with all Quicktime aware applications so once it's installed your webcam should normally be recognized by your Mac.

Even though all the latest Macs already do include iSight, you sometimes happen to need an external webcam, which you can move around and point to different directions. If so, make sure you have the macam driver set up to get it up and working.

Although it might be a little tricky to install, macam is an excellent driver which allows hundreds of webcams to work on a mac. Recommended if you're looking to do some videochatting.

Are hooked on video blogging? Do you have a Seesminc account? Then Vidnik is a must have for you.

This Google application makes great use of your iSight camera to produce quick videos for the web. Perfect for video comments, it also allows you to add a description, tags and place it a category. You can also perfectly use any camera connected via USB or FireWire to record short videos.

Vidnik is still very much in Beta, so don't expect it work perfectly. Although Vidnik works with your iSight camera, it doesn't offer any effects, like the ones you get in Photo Booth. One issue currently with the program is that it causes a delay between audio and video when encoding your videos to YouTube.

If you're addicted to video blogging, you will very much enjoy working with Vidnik, although be aware it is still in development.

What better way to spice up your video chats than with a couple of effects? This is where a program like CamTwist comes into play.

The sofware package offers all sorts of original effects to add live to your webcam videos. It is a little difficult to set up, but once installed works with most video chat services like Skype, Yahoo! Messenger or uStream. However it won't work with Apple's very own iChat service.

CamTwist includes a Studio section, which will allow you to do a bit of live mixing, like adding overlays, switching cameras, or creating a live slideshow. This coupled with the effects on hand let you really get creative, without having to dish out a single penny, simply because CamTwist is completely free. Dream Recorder is certainly an original application and we like the idea of monitoring your sleep and generating statistics from that. However the interface felt a bit confusing. The icons were too small and often had little or no explanations. Users need also be aware that the results you get with Dream Recorder can vary widely. They can depend on things like how close you place your Mac to your bed, what type of sleeper you are and many other small details. Still, try it out, Dream Recorder is good fun.

FunBooth adds a bit of excitement to your webcam sessions. The application gives you loads of props to disguise yourself with like fake mustaches, hats or funny sunglasses. You can take screenshots of yourself and then view them from the clip roll at the bottom of the interface.
