Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7.0.1 - One of the most widely used IM clients in the world

Microsoft Messenger has been one of the software giant's huge success stories being used by millions across the globe.

This doesn't make it the best chat client, but by virtue of the fact that Hotmail (now Windows Live Mail) was so popular, it took off while other IM clients were struggling to make their way. The setup process for Microsoft Messenger for Mac is quite long winded involving 9 stages of agreeing to contracts and signing up for a Windows Live account if you don't already have one.

However, once you're in, you're presented with all the standard options you get in the Windows version. You can see highlighted in blue all your contacts who are online and in red all those that are offline. There are tons of emoticons to choose from which is one of the best things about Microsoft Messenger for Mac and it allows video conferencing which is something that other clients such as Adium still haven't managed to offer. Microsoft Messenger for Mac does also let you connect to other instant messaging networks such as AIM, ICQ and Yahoo.

Microsoft Messenger for Mac offers everything that the Windows version does although you can't help feeling that the contacts could have been arranged in a more intelligent way.

Adium X 1.3.1 - Alternative instant messaging

Everybody knows that MSN Messenger on Mac is never as polished as it is on the PC. Still, that doesn't mean you should give up chat clients altogether, as the Mac offers excellent alternatives, like Adium X.

This messaging client is the perfect example of an excellent open source program. It's very regularly updated and has a strong and active community. Adium X works with almost all the IM services you'll find out there, including Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger and MSN Messenger.

The interface is simple yet colorful and multiple chats can be tabbed all into one window. If you want to engage in a private conversation with another user, Adium X support Off The Record (OTR) encrypted messaging.

As I said before, Adium X has generated an active community, which generates all sorts of extras for the client like icons, sounds, plugins or applescripts.

True, file transfer is a little flaky, and Adium X still doesn't offer voice or video chat, but it's very enjoyable to use and extremely flexible.

Adium X is a free and highly customizable IM client, that allows you to connect to almost any online chat service and engage in multiple conversations simultaneously.

Chaxer 1.2 - Change your status in Adium, Skype and iChat

Chaxer is a small little application that lets you quickly change your status in three of the most popular messenger clients for Mac: Adium, Skype and iChat.

Chaxer unfortunately will not work with other IM clients, and the ones mentioned above will have to be launched for it to work. Admittedly though, Chaxer is a pretty limited tool. True you can either change your status individually or in multiple apps at once, but you are pretty left with a choice of login, logout, available, away and offline. There is no way of adding your own custom status message for example.

Chaxer is discreet though and really simple to use. If you find that you constantly have Adium, iChat and Skype opened up it can be a good tool to have around. Users who only stick to one IM client will not find it of any use though.

An interesting application, yet Chaxer is fairly limited in changing the status on only three IM clients.

Gabtastik 0.4.1 - An interface for online chats

Remember how messenger used to be so popular only a few years back? Now it seems most people prefer to chat with friends on social networks like Facebook. Not only can you much more things, but most of them also include a built chat tool, that replaces the need for an IM client.

Gabtastik is a site specific browser (SSB) built so you can use these online chat services in a separate window. To translate: Gabtastik lets you use online chat services just like if they were separate applications.

The interface is clean and Gabtastik lets you open up multiple chats in multiple tabs. So far it only works with Google Talk, Facebook Chat and meebo. If you use an iPhone you'll probably be interested in learning that it also handles the Hahlo iPhone Twitter webapp.

Gabtastik uses very little RAM and its nice having all these online chat services in a separate window, instead of hidden away between various tabs of your browser. Obviously it's only limited to certain services, but if you use meebo, you'll have access to many more like MSN or ICQ.

Gabtastik lets you use online chat services in your very own browser window.

aMSN 0.97 Final 2 - An alternative to MSN Messenger

aMSN is an alternative to the classic MSN Messenger, with more features yet a much weaker interface. The chat client looks very similar to Microsoft's product yet differs on a number of points. aMSN developers have delved into the preferences menu, adding extra little features like event alerts and sounds, conferencing support or autoaway messages. Like with MSN Messenger you'll be able to transfer files and organize all your contacts into groups.

Audio/Video support is the number one function that users look for in IM clients nowadays, yet an area which aMSN doesn't particularly focus on. Webcam support is fairly weak and unstable, and instead of integrating into your chat window will open up in a new Quicktime window.

One of the biggest pet peeves of users with aMSN is the interface. It simply doesn't compare with more sleeker, more recent IM clients. To the developer's defense though you can download all sorts of skins from the program's website. Similarly it offers up a range of plugins, to customize your client to your liking. Chat addicts will also appreciate the animated emoticons on hand.

In terms of performance, you have to keep in mind that aMSN is still a Beta product, so still liable to some crashes and bugs. We did have some trouble when opening up new chat window and noticed that the client tended to use a lot of CPU.

In a few words, aMSN is a good alternative to MSN for users looking to add more plugins, skins and delve into the preferences menu.

Messenger for Mac 7.0.1 - Microsoft's MSN Messenger for Mac

The highly awaited new version of Messenger for Mac is finally out. While it keeps a slightly similar interface and same set of features, Messenger for Mac comes with some extra features.

You will still have to sign in using your hotmail or Windows Live account. Once installed, you'll see Microsoft Messenger 7 offers a slightly updated interface, yet overall very similar to that of version6. Messenger now offers Bonjour support, so you can detect and connect with users on the same local network as you. Features like sending files, displaying a picture or emoticons are unchanged. You can change your display name and add a personal message just by clicking on them. One new feature is that you can give nicknames to your friends. Just click on their display name and start typing. We also liked the search feature, which is really handy to quickly find a contact or email address.

It's obvious that this upgrade is aimed at corporate users as they get the most significant updates though. The highly touted audio and video feature, with which you can have videoconferences with your contacts, is only available to them. The same goes with detailed presence information, as you'll need a version of Office Communications Server 2007 to use it.

Corporate users will love the new features in Messenger for Mac 7, like Bonjour Support, detailed presence information and especially audio and video. Personal users will find barely anything different from version 6.

More iChat Smileys 3.1.1 - 120 smileys for your chat client

Tired of the limited choice of smileys in your chat client? More iChat Smileys will provide you with 120 new emoticons to illustrate your online chats with friends.

Contrary to what the name suggests, this pack will not only allow you to add smileys to iChat, but also to other clients such as AdiumX, Proteus, Fire, Mercury and Skype. The pack is very easy to install and can be used right away. You'll see it offers all sorts of emotions, from happy to sad, ecstatic, disappointed and even original characters like a policeman, pig or a witch. There are also a few miscellaneous icons like a moon, sun or mobile phone.

I do get the feeling that some of them are a little outdated, or highly similar to the ones already present in MSN Messenger. Still, if you're a big fan of emoticons and can't really imagine a chat without them, then this pack will surely extend the choice already present in your chat client.

More iChat Smileys is a good set of 120 new emoticons for chat clients like AdiumX or Skype.

Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 2 - Chat with your Yahoo! friends

Yahoo! Messenger for Mac allows you to chat with your friends from the comfort of your Mac. Although the application is blessed with a pleasant interface, similar to that of iChat, it suffers from slowdowns, possibly due to the application still being in Beta.

Yahoo! Messenger lets you add your own profile picture or use your Yahoo! avatar if you have one. You can display the iTunes track playing on your Mac, just like with Skype and organize all your contacts in groups. Yahoo! Messenger also includes the expected emoticons and different status, including the ability to sign in as invisible. Up to now nothing spectacular.

In an attempt to emulate VoIP clients, Yahoo! Messenger allows you to make calls and send SMS messages, an option you'll also find in MSN. You can also connect and use your webcam, however be aware that it tends to lag and slow down during use.

Yahoo! Messenger allows you to transfer 'monster' files, that is ones up to 2 GB. That sounds great, unfortunately files over 200 MB tend to take a significant amount of time until they're fully transferred.

An attractive interface and good call and SMS features unfortunately don't make Yahoo! Messenger a true VoIP client yet.

Mercury Messenger 1.9 - IM client with RSS and multiple account support

Mercury Messenger, also known as MM or dMSN, is a free alternative to MSN Messenger offering almost all the same features.

The IM client allows you to connect to your live or hotmail account and chat with your contacts. You can organize them by groups, use emoticons, send files and activate your webcam during chats. The interface itself is highly similar to that of MSN Messenger albeit a much less attractive one. I found that the different elements are placed a little clumsily here and there, making Mercury Messenger slightly unintuitive. Luckily the interface is interchangeable so if you find a good skin you can use that instead.

A big difference with MSN Messenger is RSS support. Mercury allows you to add and preview RSS feeds. I was a little skeptic of the idea at first, as I much prefer previewing RSS feeds on a whole screen, however I found it very similar to feed reading on a mobile device, which works in some way. Mercury Messenger has a tabbed interface which allows you to open and work with multiple accounts. Beware that having too many open simply ends up confusing though.

Although missing the most recent features of MSN Messengers and despite a weaker interface, Mercury Messenger is a good alternative with RSS and multiple account support.

Psi 0.11 - Instant messaging as free and open as it should be

People tend to stick to the more known messaging clients when there are so many excellent open source alternatives out there like Psi.

This client was built to connect to multiple Jabber accounts and more known IM accounts like Yahoo or MSN. It's simple to set up, thanks to startup tips and guides found in the forum and wiki.

This last point is one of the main strengths of Psi. The open source project benefits from a strong community which has really helped make it a solid messaging client over the years. One of the examples of that is all the localized version of Psi that are available.

Psi is easy to use, yet discreet and features lots of iconsets and emoticons. You can also fully customize the interface and add your own icons. You can work with hotkeys and create command lines to insert in your chats, however more technical users will probably feel more comfortable working with these.

Users worried about their security or working with Psi in a public environment will be glad to know that it features SSL encryption and lets you use OpenPGP to send encrypted messages.

Psi is a real pleasure to use and is loaded with features, from security to customization and not forgetting multiple IM and Jabber compatibility. If you're looking for a good alternative messaging client, this is the one to choose.

Coccinella is an open source jabber client with a nice set of features.

Coupled with a whiteboard, Coccinella becomes a useful tool to chat and work on projects with other people on a network. Although it won't let you use multiple accounts, the client is highly flexible, and will allow you to connect to any Jabber/XMPP server, including popular IMs like Messenger, ICQ and even Google Talk. However you won't be able to make use of the VoIP capabilities and webcam support of these IM services, as Coccinella does not handle them. We also did suffer some stalls when launching the application. However, general performances of the client were good.

The client's interface is simple and uncluttered and you can keep all your messages in an inbox, making them easy to browse by subject, sender or date. Coccinella also offers file transfers, and you can choose your own avatars. Apart from the decent collection of emoticons, you can also import new ones if you have them in jisp format.

The whiteboard is really fun to use and easy to share with as many other users as you want. Coccinella also offers up connections to chatrooms, something we've never really been convinced of, but at least, for people interested, it's there.

Coccinella is a good open source jabber client with a whiteboard and loads of emoticons that can connect to any server. A recommended IM tool.

Spark 2.5.8 - Full featured IM client for internal communication

Spark is an IM client that you can use in organizations such as schools or companies to allow people communicate with each other in a quick, efficient way. Of course, there's the possibility to use one of the big IM programs like Live or Yahoo! Messenger, but Spark is faster and far more secure. It uses the Jabber protocol which can be configured to use either private or public networks, depending on the plug-ins you install on your server.

Spark displays a nicely designed interface that makes it really pleasant to use. I especially like the emoticons sets included in the program, as well as the usage of a color code to distinguish between different statuses (online, away, busy and so on). Spark also has some extra details that are hardly found in LAN clients, such as avatar support, conference rooms, voice chat, spellcheck and even a special tool to capture anything on your screen and send it directly to any contact. What's more, the program includes some other useful tools like a basic note editor and a task list.

Of course, no software app is perfect and neither Spark is. I had some problems when trying to organize my contacts into groups, with groups completely disappearing from my screen (but easily recovered by restarting the program). Also, I feel configuration settings fall too short: I'd like to be able to change the font and color of my text or hide offline contacts, just to mention two missing options.

Spark is an attractive, secure and fast IM client for local network communication, with extra tools that make it a great companion for your daily work at office.

For those of you that use the iChat client, iModz will power up the features of Apple's chat client. This little program lets you manage your status in iChat adding all sorts of information. Very simple to use it allows you to change your status with any sort of static or animated image. I personally quite like the feature to display iTunes songs in iChat, similar to what is already available in Skype. If you feel creative you can also use iModz to display all sorts of info like links from Safari or an email from Apple Mail.

It's a shame that iModz is only limited to iChat. This nifty client really brings more to iChat's functionalities, allowing you to share extra information with all your contacts. Effectively, if you use iChat with iModz you're getting a great chat client with loads of features.

Portable Adium 1.2.2 r4.0 - Multi-account messenger to use wherever you like

Adium is already a popular instant messaging application for Mac offering as it does access to multiple protocols and accounts. You can use it to connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, Jabber and other chat services all at the same time, meaning you only need one chat program open for all your different accounts.

In this special mobile bundle, the application is designed to be placed on your portable device (e.g. USB key, iPod, portable hard disk etc) so that you can run it on any Mac you like. Simply connect your portable device and run the program directly from it: all your profile and account info are stored on your device, meaning there's no need to set-up your client on each new machine you use.

The design, implementation and performance of this version of Adium are just as great as on the normal version. The only thing I'd question is just how useful the portable version would be: between work and home it could serve as handy but with very few internet cafés opting for Macs, it might prove less useful for travellers and students.

MSN Messenger 4.0.1 - MSN Messenger for Mac 10.3.9 or under

The older version of Messenger, 4.0.1, still remains a top download on Softonic, even though it's been superseded by the newer Microsoft Messenger 6.0.3. This version will be useful for those of you that still have any Mac OS under 10.3.9. Fitted with all the basic functions you'd expect of Messenger, the application lets you organize your contacts in different groups, set your status and use emoticons. New conversations open up in a new window, which you can move around anywhere on the screen.

While it's fairly easy to check your Hotmail account thanks to the mail button at the top of the interface, we found that sending files and images to other users can be a bit slow. MSN Messenger can fairly be used as basic IM client, we still recommend updating to the latest version, for those of you that can. Not only is it more secure, but it will also offer more features and a sleeker interface.

A good and basic IM client for anyone with a Mac OS under 10.3.9.
