UniMailer 2.1 - Send huge amounts of e-mail at once

If you need a way to send out e-mails to a huge number of contacts then UniMailer helps you reach them.

UniMailer allows you to manage multiple groups of contacts but also makes e-mails to them feel more personal by allowing you to add a separate name to each one. UniMailer allows you to write plain text or HTML messages and supports attachments, although it doesn't seem possible to insert images into e-mails.

You can however track mail after it has been sent so that you get a delivery receipt on arrival. On the other hand, if you need to add lots of statistical data to e-mails, you can import it from Excel, which makes it a particularly useful tool for businesses. After sending, you've got a complete searchable archive of what you've sent, showing when and who to.

Most home users won't find much need for UniMail but small businesses will find it an invaluable tool.

MailSteward 8.0.5 - Easily manage bulk mail

Most of us use either Outlook or an online web client such as Gmail or Hotmail for e-mail but some people have particular demands from their e-mail client due to the amount of mail they receive.

For those that receive very large amounts of mail daily, none of the above are particularly helpful when it comes to organizing content. MailSteward can help in this regard because it helps to control and organize large amounts of mail automatically so that it's easy for you to read and filter. Unfortunately, MailSteward doesn't work with web based clients although you can always redirect your mail to a desktop client.

With MailSteward, you can safely archive your large volume of vital email information, easily access your email database with fast, sophisticated searching and protect your essential email data from data formatting by locking important batches of mails. MailSteward can be a little tricky to configure but once you've done so, it works quietly in the background.

If you're already using another mail client such as Entourage you can export mbox files to MailSteward which could make your life seriously easier.

Pando 2.1.5.5 - Send up to 1 GB by e-mail

If you’ve ever had to publish, send or receive particularly large files sizes, you’ll know that it can throw up all kinds of problems – crashed servers, blocked inboxes and transfers that suddenly just hang-up. Pando aims to take the pain out of this process and according to the developers, 3 million people agree that it does exactly that.

Pando is based on a P2P network that enables you to send files of up to 1GB in size by e-mail or by publishing it to the web. It supports all multimedia file types including video, audio and photos meaning it’s great for people who deal with audio-visual files regularly.

For most users, the major benefit will be with e-mail attachments and the good news is, there's no need to change your existing e-mail client. Pando works by creating a torrent-like link file which you can then send in the body of your e-mail for the recipient to click on. There’s no need to be online when the recipient downloads the file and there’s no compression, FTP or dodgy web uploading applets to deal with. The reason you don’'t need to be online is because Pando sends files to its "super-node" servers, which means that there's always at least one "seeder" online at any given time. This seed is guaranteed for 14 days so even if you log off, your recipient can still view it. Obviously, the more people that share it too, the faster the download.

For those unfamiliar with FTP, Pando is fantastic since it works on the same principle as a Bittorrent client. Once the small interface is opened, you can drag and drop or select “add-file” to create a ".pando” file which you can then e-mail to whoever you want once it is uploaded.

The main drawback is that the recipient has to have Pando installed to receive the file. If you transfer files to someone regularly, this is not a problem but if it’'s just the odd file you want to send, then it could be a nuisance to ask someone to install it just to see your file. Be warned also that Pando cannot guarantee security although the developers assure that Pando has 256bit AES end-to-end encryption built in making it technically one of the most secure ways to transfers files online today. The only way that someone could realistically compromise your security however is by hacking into your e-mail account.

Whilst Pando is obviously open to abuse by sharing illegal files, most people go to the major Torrent sites to do that, meaning Pando is refreshingly free of any copyrighted material flying around and causing problems. Overall, it’'s a great solution for those unfamiliar with FTP who need to send big files regularly.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.16 - Mozilla's free, secure and customizable mail client

So you’ve taken the leap and installed the versatile internet browser, Firefox, but are you ready to trade in your Outlook Express for Mozilla’s open source mail application? Thunderbird is Mozilla’s award winning and free solution to manage your mail more efficiently.

Thunderbird woos users thanks to its flurry of options and the benefits of an open source application. Automatic updates ensure that you have the latest version of Thunderbird, preventing any security threats and offering you new features as soon as they’re available.

The biggest worry for users is switching from one mail application to another and losing precious information. With Thunderbird the switch is painless because you can quickly import your mail and contacts from your Outlook and set up your POP3 or IMAP account is a snap. To stay well organized we suggest taking advantage of Thunderbird’s filters. While this option is nothing new to the experienced Outlook user, you’ll have to admit that Thunderbird makes filters much more accessible, thanks to a simple selection of combinations and actions. Create distinct folders for your personal and professional mail and your newsletters and associate them with filters to avoid the hassle of constantly sorting your mail. Another feature we could single out is the integrated spell checker, a blessing if you send many emails and can’t be bothered to constantly verify your writing.

Although it isn’t visible right away, Thunderbird also features an RSS reader. Handy if you need to follow the news or specialist websites, this tool fits seamlessly into Thunderbird and you could almost forget that it is a mail application. Paste in the RSS feed from your favorite news source and the main messages window will reveal a list of all the latest feeds. The message pane is used as an integrated browser window to display the selected article.

Email is the number one source of viruses, that’s why Thunderbird offers various levels of message encryption, a spam filter and support for valid certificates. We found the spam filter particularly effective. Set it to “learn” mode, and it teaches itself to separate the valid email from the rest of the junk. You have to be mindful of this option though, because Thunderbird can become too restrictive and may decide on its own that one of your friends is suddenly persona non grata. Reviewing your junk folder every now and then should avoid you accidentally losing friends. Thunderbird also automatically turns off Javascript and by default does not load remote images, a good way to defuse the risk of viruses from dodgy emails.

Another known feature of the Mozilla line of products is customization. Just as with Firefox, Thunderbird can integrate a slew of extensions and add-ons to rev up your inbox. You can also add or remove icons from the actions pane, selecting the ones you use most frequently.

The one place where Thunderbird fails, and professionals will confirm this, is the failure to integrate Microsoft Exchange support. An essential tool in any work environment, the collaborative messaging software is sorely missed in Thunderbird and seriously limits its usefulness in offices. Furthermore, we can question why Mozilla included an RSS reader yet failed to incorporate a calendar, standard in most mail applications nowadays.

While the lack of proper business minded features will limit Thunderbird’s point in the workplace, the simplicity, customizability and security make it a number one choice for home users. If you’re worried about your safety on the Internet or are just looking for a more efficient way of handling your mail, Thunderbird is probably the best solution out there.

Kerio MailServer 6.4.2 - Secure messaging and group collaboration

Kerio MailServer is what's known as a "groupware server" which basically means it allows several companies or organisations to collaborate on it at the same time.

Kerio MailServer does this through email, shared contacts, shared calendars and tasks.
Kerio MailServer does this in complete security because it is integrated with McAfee Antivirus which enables it to instantly remove viruses from incoming and outgoing email. Likewise, SpamEliminator automatically detects and filters spam from the Kerio MailServer.

Kerio WebMail is particularly easy to use. You can drag and drop mails to an extent that's not possible in Outlook but at the same time, it can be used in conjunction with Outlook because Kerio MailServer Server-based calendars and address books synchronize seamlessly with both Outlook, Entourage and of course, Kerio WebMail. You can even migrate data and messages from Outlook on anything held on an MS Exchange server with a handy wizard.

If you're looking for a good alternative to Outlook with more drag-and-drop features and need group collaboration options, Kerio MailServer is worth a try.

Most webmail and desktop email clients allow you to forward mail from other accounts into them. Mail Forward tries to give a bit more liberty to users by letting them forward up to 20 different accounts. The application is simple to use: just enter your SMTP details and forwarding address, then enter info for your different email accounts. You can ask the application to delete forwarded messages and set time intervals for when messages are forwarded.

Obviously, Mail Forward will be extremely useful to those that have multiple mail accounts but use a webmail service that does not support forwarding all other services to it. However, if you use Gmail or a good desktop client like Thunderbird or Apple Mail, you won't really need Mail Forward.

Do you like to get a little notification for new mail? If you use Apple Mail then you can find a number of different plugins to notify you in many ways. MailFX will display a graphical animation.

The plugin is easy to install and remove (it comes with an uninstaller) and can be activated from Mail>Preferences>Rules. We did have some trouble launching it though and had to run commands in the Terminal to get it working.

MailFX offers only five different animations and you will not be able to add your own or decide where it shows up on the screen (bottom right). However you can adjust the display time and visibility of the graphic and choose from more than a dozen sound alerts to associate to the plugin.

Despite offering a limited number of animations and some trouble with installation, MailFX may well suit Apple Mail users looking for graphical notifications. For a sleeker notifier I would suggest Mail.appetizer.

Google Notifier can be customized so that you receive a pop up message every time a new message arrives in your inbox. You can also set a sound for new mail and for calendar reminders.

Google Calendar and Gmail both show up as separate in your menu bar, something which I personally do not like but that some of you might prefer to separate mail and events.

RelatedMail is a nice little add on to your Apple Mail. This plugin shows up next to a selected message and shows all related emails by date, subject or sender.

RelatedMail is a little difficult to install, as you'll not only need to copy the folder into your library, but also enter a few Terminal commands. Once installed, open up Mail, select View and press 'Show Related Messages'.

I did find RelatedMail lacking in explanations. For most things, you'll find you need to go to the developer page to get more information. I would have also liked to be able to reorder related messages myself by choosing the field. RelatedMail seems to have a mind of its own though, both in the way it indexes and shows related messages.

Mailplane 1.6.1 - Enjoy Gmail from your desktop

Mailplane was created back in the days when IMAP support wasn't around in Gmail and you wanted to access your Gmail account from your desktop.

Nowadays you can consult Gmail from any mail client like Mail.app or Thunderbird. However, some users might like turning to Mailplane, which is specifically built for Gmail.

Fitted with a mail client interface, Mailplane displays your Gmail page in its main window. At the top of the interface you get a number of actions like sending, printing, or replying and more Gmail specific actions like starring or archiving.

Mailplane also lets you use Google Talk and opens it up in a separate window, so it works just like a separate application on your Mac, something we've been waiting for for ages and that Google still hasn't introduced. You can also easily take screenshots or send any pictures from iPhoto automatically via Mailplane. We also liked how attachments can simply be dragged and dropped to any message.

Overall, Mailplane works seamlessly and really feels like a mail desktop client. Only just for Google. You can easily connect to multiple Gmail accounts and use Gmail actions straight from the interface. Yet, as expressed at the beginning of this review, I wonder about the relevance of such a program when Gmail has finally added IMAP support.

A great way to enjoy Gmail and all its features on your desktop, yet Mailplane remains more of a niche product than anything.

Have you ever need to copy specific sections of emails, but could not waste time going through each and every one?

MailCM is a preference and contextual menu item to quickly find and copy to clipboard specific properties of an email. It works in Apple Mail and can recover elements like the header message, source, reply to or recipient address. To use it all you have to do is select the emails you need to retrieve, right click, select MailCM from the dropdown menu, then the property you wish to copy.

MailCM was a little difficult to install. We had to copy the plugin to the Contextual Menu folder in Library and restart Apple Mail to get it to appear. However once setup, it proved to be very handy and certainly saved lots of time when looking for properties in many emails.

Although a little difficult to install, MailCM is a good Apple Mail contextual menu item which copies message properties in one go.

Outspring Mail 1.0.1 - A mail client with smart features

It's not easy introducing a new mail client. If people aren't already using mail.app, they'll be perfectly happy with webmail. The company that brought QuickMail, brings Outspring, a smart mail client, to beat the competition.

You can expect the typical mail features in Outspring Mail, including POP/IMAP, SMTP and SSL support, handling of drafts and templates, the ability to create smart mailboxes and keep separate accounts. Outspring Mail also includes a search function at the top right and a solid spam filter to keep your mailbox free of junk. The interface is quite similar to most mail clients although the icons could have been better designed.

Outspring has unique features that aim to make it smarter than other mail clients. The brain will learn from your actions and suggest similar ones to you in the future. However when we tested it it didn't seem to work properly all the time. We liked the 'message deferment' function to 'snooze' new incoming mail. Intelligent summary is supposed to be a smart way of showing a small review of new mail, however it turned out to be incoherent way too often.

The major drawback to Outspring is it's price. $95 is just too much to pay for a mail client, especially when you consider that Outspring still crashes every now and then. At such a price, you should expect something top of the range. Yet for free, you can already find excellent webmail clients or even work with a very solid mail.app.

The smart features certainly separate Outspring from the other mail clients. Unfortunately so does the excessively high price tag. Let's hope in the future Outspring becomes a bit more accessible.

WideMail 0.5.1 - Mail.app in widescreen

I'm not a big fan of Apple's Mail.app, although I have to admit it has improved over the years and is fairly easy to use. One thing I do like about it though is the plugins you can add to it, like WideMail.

This add-on allows you to view the Mail window in full screen, just like you would in Microsoft Exchange. There's nothing too far fetched in WideMail: essentially it turns the two row horizontal view into a two column vertical view. Some users find this appearance much easier to work with and clear.

You'll be able to adjust things like color, style and spacing of the columns from the Apple Mail preferences.

In all, it is a bit surprising that Apple did not include this possibility in the new version of Apple Mail. Having the WideMail plugin at least gives you a choice between the horizontal or vertical view. Beware though that it can be a little unstable every now and then and can crash your Apple Mail.

Despite being a little unstable, WideMail is a useful plugin which brings vertical view to your Apple Mail.

Eudora (Penelope) 8.0.0 b3 - Send e-mail to and receive it from friends and coworkers

Nostalgic users of the classic Eudora will be glad to get their hands on the latest outing, Penelope. This updated version manages to mix in iconic Eudora features with many things from Mozilla's Thunderbird. You'll immediately recognize the Eudora icons and the typical Thunderbird interface. The mail client is easy to install and to set up your own account. You can create filters to manage incoming mail and use Mozilla's search as you type feature to skip through your emails.

Penelope also includes an RSS reader, once again based on the one from Thunderbird. It worked smoothly importing new feeds. The preview window lets you read feeds directly from Penelope instead of opening them up in your browser. Another neat feature of the mail client is that you can now install all Thunderbird add-ons to it. The address book has also been improved and you can easily import or export it to various formats.

Despite still being a bit unstable (Penelope is still in development after all), the Eudora mail client provides a good alternative to send and receive mail. Qualcomm Penelope developers seem to have succeeded in blending the strengths of both Eudora and Thunderbird into one.

MiniMail 1.1.1 - Your Apple Mail at your fingertips

Don't you wish you could quickly check your new messages in Mail.app without having to open it all the time? MiniMail does just that. This nifty Apple Mail plugin shows your new email messages in a hovering window. The interface includes a "check mail" and a "new message" buttons. Other tasks like replying, forwarding or marking as junk are also immediately accessible from the button on the right of the interface. We also really liked how you can easily set hotkeys to MiniMail.

If there was one disappointment to MiniMail it's that the program only shows your new messages and doesn't let you cycle through your old ones. Apart from that, this is a great addition to Mail that I'm personally going to be using from now on!

SpamSieve gives you back your inbox by bringing powerful Bayesian spam filtering to Mac e-mail clients. It’s quick and easy to control SpamSieve from within your mail client, and you can customize how it interacts with the rest of your message sorting rules. Other spam filters get worse over time as spammers adapt to their rules; SpamSieve actually gets better over time as it adapts to your mail. By learning from the very messages that you receive, SpamSieve is able to block nearly all of your spam, without putting your good messages in the spam mailbox.

Main Features:

Powerful Bayesian spam filtering results in high accuracy and almost no false positives

Integrates with your e-mail client for a superior user experience

Integrates with the Mac OS X Address Book

Adapts to spam messages sent from particular addresses to catch 100% of them

Automatically maintains a whitelist of particular senders or mailing lists

Add sophisticated rules that match various message headers, or the message body

You can use the Habeas Safelist, which indicates messages that are not spam

You can use the “ADV” subject tag indicating that a message is spam

SpamSieve can decode and look inside messages

SpamSieve spam message statistics

Let SpamSieve notify you only when you receive non-spam messages

The corpus window and log let you see how each spam message was caught

Works with:

Apple Mail

Emailer

Entourage 9.0.1 through 11.x (2004)

Eudora 5.2 or later (Sponsored or Paid)

GyazMail

Mailsmith (bundled with Mailsmith 2.1)

Outlook Express 5

PowerMail (optional bundle with PowerMail 5)
