ForkLift 1.6b1 - Fast and friendly file manager for Mac

ForkLift is a fast file manager with an attractive interface, which makes handling uploads and downloads very easy.

The first thing you notice about it is its dual pane interface, which lets you view two different folders at once. The bottom pane of the interface has all the details on the file you select, which you can also view with Apple's Quick Look.

ForkLift lets you select your favorite devices and you can also use its search box to find specific files faster. I also quite liked the various editing tools, which allow you to batch rename files, split or create an archive.

Connecting to a server is also pretty straightforward. ForkLift gives you a choice of FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and even includes Amazon S3 and Bluetooth.

If there's one thing missing from this program it would really be the ability to schedule uploads, great if you handle a large amount of files.

ForkLift makes for an excellent file manager, thanks to a friendly dual pane interface, good editing tools and simple connection settings.

AbleFtp 8.05 - Automate your FTP transferring tasks

AbleFtp is designed with those users in mind that need automate FTP transfers without having to constantly manage them themselves.

The program is extremely easy to use with no programming or scripting required and features an attractive GUI for an FTP client which by and large are usually pretty drab affairs. It's designed to run up to 1000 or more tasks a day which is an incredible amount that most people will have no need for but indicates that even business users may get some mileage out of this program too. If you have any urgent problems, the program also offers free technical support so you don't have to upgrade if you get stuck although major upgrades have to be paid for.

There's no denying however that the big draw of this client will be the scheduling and remote access options. You can schedule FTP of files between your PC and the server and even automatically rename files based on the current month, day or time if needed. In addition, FTP supports wildcards (*) and can transfer multiple files at once. Meantime if you want to monitor your transfers from afar, the remote FTP directory monitor can detect directory changes and initiate FTP, ZIP, copy and delete actions.

It may not be the most advanced FTP client you'll ever use but it's certainly one of the most intuitive and automated and therefore, a great time saver.

FileZilla 3.1.3.1 - Secure and fast FTP transfers

You could pretty much consider FileZilla an open source success story. It's popular, works well and fast, and regularly updated.

If you're looking for a solid FTP client what more could you ask more? In fact, FileZilla is not just limited to FTP, but also handles FTPS and SFTP for secure transfers of multiple files on multiple servers. The interface, if not a little ugly, gives you a quick outlook of all your transfers, sites and disks and makes it easy to drag and transfer. I also quite like the QuickConnect feature to access your favorite server in seconds.

FileZilla is known to be fairly fast, and can also resume downloads and handle very big transfers, I'm talking here higher than 4 GB. You can set both local and remote filters for things like images, explorer files or CVS and SVN directories or even create your own. FileZilla also includes a tool to compare directories in terms of file size or modification time.

The application can guide you when setting up your network and lets you set speed limits in case you don't want to overload your bandwidth.

One thing really missing from FileZilla though is a scheduler to automatically set transfer times.

Despite lacking a scheduler, FileZilla is an excellent open source FTP client. It's stable, fast and very efficient. Highly recommended.

Fugu 1.2.0 - Open source SFTP

Fugu gives an interface to the commandline Secure File Transfer (SFTP). The whole application is encrypted letting you upload and download files in total security.

Fugu offers an interface that, if not a little rudimentary, is similar to most FTP clients. You can browse through your directories, drag and drop files and preview images. Fugu includes full directory upload and history.

In terms of security, not only does Fugu handle SFTP, but you'll also find it works with SCP and SSH. You can create your own SSH tunnels, perfect for transmitting encrypted information. Fugu also interacts well with your Mac's Keychain and handles Public Key Authentication.

Fugu works with external editor and you securely change your permissions and owner or group access. The application can also connect to alternate ports.

The interface may not be that sexy, but Fugu is a very reliable SFTP client. What's more it's completely free!

ExpanDrive 1.2.10 - Access remote files from your Finder

We recently reviewed MacFUSE, which we explained would help create all sorts of intuitive interfaces for file system implementation. ExpanDrive is the perfect example of what you can achieve with MacFUSE.

This application lets you access all your remote files via SFTP straight from your Finder. There's no worrying about downloading or uploading files, the program keeps you connected to your server from your Finder and you can edit, change and save your files easily. All you need to know is your host name, username and password to connect to your SFTP server.

Files opened from a Subversion (SVN) can be edited straight from ExpanDrive using the built-in SVN commands from any text editor. The most impressive thing about ExpanDrive is how responsive it is, making you almost forget that you're working on remote files.

On the downside, ExpanDrive tends to leave behind '.DS_Store' files in your remote server, which you'll have to remove afterwards, if you want to keep your folders tidy. ExpanDrive also lacks proper explanations as to how it can be uninstalled. It installs a lot of different files on your system and you'll have to get rid of them to if your removing the program.

Despite these two minor drawbacks, ExpanDrive is a perfect example of what can be achieved with MacFUSE, access to remote folders in a snap.

Download ExpanDrive 1.2.10 in Softonic

Dragster 1.0.6 - Drag, drop, done

Dragster is an incredibly useful application that takes the drag out of file transfers. Just drag and drop files or folders on Dragster's icon in the Dock, and away they go! Dragster can send files via eMail, upload them to remote servers, copy them to your iDisk, or copy/move files anywhere on your local drives.

Dragster integrates unobtrusively into your Dock, making it instantly available when you need it, and completely out of your way when you don't. Best of all, Dragster lets you set up as many customizable "Shortcuts" as you like, taking the drudgery out repetitive file transfers to the same person or server.

There's also a contextual menu component to Dragster, so you can right-click or control-click a file in any program, and instantly send that file to one of the shortcuts you've set up. It doesn't get any more convenient than that! And of course, Dragster fully supports Bonjour, making file transfers on your local network ridiculously easy.

Dragster isn't simply an FTP client, it supports FTP, SFTP, SCP, SMB (Windows File Sharing), as well as AFP (AppleShare) for file transfers. Best of all, you don't even have to know what protocol to use: simply select "Best Available" and Dragster will figure it out for you! There's also no need to mount servers before uploading files, Dragster takes care of this for you!

Despite Dragster's simple and elegant interface, it has an extremely advanced file transfer engine under the hood that optimizes upload speed, especially for repetitive file transfers to the same location. Dragster also features a full-blown file browser for remote servers, allowing you to navigate through file listings using the same intuitive interface regardless of what protocol you're using.

Already using a program like Transmit, Fetch, or Interarchy for uploading files? No problem, Dragster is meant to complement programs like these, not replace them. Dragster offers you speed and convenience for quick file transfers that is unmatched.

Flow 1.0.3 - An FTP client built specifically for Leopard

Flow is a smart new FTP client for transferring files built specifically to use the new features found in Leopard.

The applications supports FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, .Mac and local connections and lets you carry out multiple transfers at once. Although it doesn't offer tabbed views, which I find absolutely necessary when working with different connections at once, it uses QuickLook to visualize files quickly in your Finder.

The interface is clean and simple, giving you the transfer rate for each file and a little progress bar to let you know has much has been uploaded/ downloaded. Programmers will enjoy having a built-in editor to modify code

The best feature of Flow surely is dropmarks. After creating a droplet in Flow, all you'll have to do is drag any file onto it to transfer it. Easy as pie!

Although it doesn't offer tabbed views, Flow is a smart new FTP client that makes great use of Leopard technology. Dropmarks are an excellent way of transferring files.

MacFusion brings all sorts of information to your Mac in the form of files and folders displayed as just another "Volume" on your Mac desktop. Right now you can use this software to show a Secure Shell or Secure FTP share from another computer on your macs desktop, letting you manipulate the files on it as if they were on your own computer. MacFusion can also do the same for any File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server, giving read/write FTP in the finder for the first time! MacFusion works using open source technology called FUSE ported by Google to the Mac platform (MacFuse). MacFusion is based on plugins, so you can expect exciting new file systems coming to your desktop in the future! This includes the files from your gmail account, pictures from Flickr, encrypted volumes using encfs, source code repositories using subversion, and more!

FileChute 3.0.6 - Send oversized files easily

Attachment sizes on emails regularly increase, and you can often find ways to share files online. Yet sending large files to someone can be a bit of a trick.

If you have an online storage account, such as .Mac, then sending large files with FileChute is really easy. Just drag and drop your files and let File Chute do its job. You can automatically create and store all of them into an archive file and scramble the file name to protect them. FileChute also lets you encrypt your file, although it will have to be a disk image.

Once you've entered login details for your storage account and have store the files on it, all you need to do is send a link to them to your friends. The program includes an automatic link shortener so you don't have to send a really long link to your files to your friends.

All FileChute really lacks is a truly nice interface to enjoy it on Mac OS X Leopard.

Despite the old interface, FileChute is a great program to send large files online easily.

Yummy FTP 1.7.2 - The FTP/SFTP client Mac OS X style

Yummy FTP is an FTP and SFTP client application for Macintosh, built as native Mac OS X software from the ground up, with the goal of providing a reliable, powerful, yet easy to use file transfer utility. Since it’s release, Yummy FTP has gained a reputation for being the fastest, most reliable, and most flexible FTP client available. Here’s why:

Reliability

The unique connection manager monitors for busy servers or dropped/stalled connections and will re-connect and resume transfers from where they left off. Firewalls are traversed with ease with, due to the automatic FTP mode detection system. Misbehaving servers are pandered to in order to get the job done. Other apps simply display an error message.

Flexibility

Yummy FTP takes all the best standard features available in other solutions, makes them better, then adds a bunch of its own uniquely powerful features, resulting in a highly focused and productive feature set. You won’t find any bloat here. It’s also compatible with a wide range of servers from the FTP server built into Mac OS X, to Windows, Unix, and even XBox and Dec VMS servers, which fits nicely with its ability to customize settings on a per-server basis. It’s fast and it’s efficient too, using minimal CPU resources at all times.

DockDrop is a simple little application to transfer files to a number of protocols. It's a great way to share them with others in seconds.

As the name suggest, DockDrop appears as an icon in your Dock. Just select the folder you want to transfer and drag it onto the icon. You'll be able to upload to FTP, WebDAV or SCP. You can also send pictures to Flickr with it. Once your file has been uploaded, DockDrop will create a url for it on your clipboard, which you can use to share the file with other people.

DockDrop's real strength is its simplicity. Using it is just a case of dragging and dropping and sharing the url with others. This is only the first release of the program, but we hope that future versions will add Amazon S3 and maybe SFTP to the list.

Despite limitations in the protocols, DockDrop is a really simple tool to share files with others. Drag and drop at its best!

The Transmit Widget lets you access the excellent FTP client for Mac straight from your Dashboard.

Once you have Transmit set up on your Mac it's a good idea to also get this widget, to quickly transfer files. The widget is easy to configure: enter server, user, password and path details and your ready to go. Next all you need to do is drop files you wish to transfer onto the widget. As Transmit processes it you'll see the little truck icon get in motion. A little green check will tell you that the transfer is done.

On the downside don't expect the Transmit widget to give you full access to all of the great features in the FTP client. It's only really useful for quick uploads. If you want to browse for files, create a secure transfer, access Amazon S3 or interact with Spotlight and Automator your better off connecting to Transmit altogether. One thing to note though, every time you carry out an upload in the widget the Transmit interface will pop up, showing that it's actually working.

FTPortal is an application and contextual menu that facilitates uploading files to specific folders of your FTP servers. It is most useful when you need to upload files to the same folders very frequently. You can upload files by either dropping them on a FTPortal application, or control-clicking on them in the Finder to display a contextual menu. Both the application and the contextual menu can be configured for uploading to any folder of any FTP server account.

CrowzNest acts as a lookout and monitors local folders for activity. The folders being monitored are called Hot Folders. CrowzNest will only monitor folders nominated by the user and these folders are directly linked to a corresponding folder on a remote FTP site.

The CrowzNest icon can be seen in the System Status Bar and runs continuously, monitoring all Hot Folders for activity. When a file is changed or added to the Hot Folder CrowzNest will detect the change and submit the file to be automatically uploaded using Captain FTP's Transfer Manager.

To create a Hot Folder simply open CrowzNest and click on Add '+' button to enter the details. Click on the Hot Folder button and browse the local directory structure to select the folder to be monitored. Next add the details for the remote FTP Server and folder to upload the files to. CrowzNest will support remote servers with FTP, SFTP, SSL with Passive and Active modes.

iNetCourier 1.2.9 - Simple and effective file transfer over the internet

iNetCourier was designed to make file transfer simple and easy. There are three main limitations people encounter with ordinary FTP when transferring files. The first problem is that each person transferring files to the server needs to have an FTP client, and they need to understand how to use it. The second problem is that when files are sent to an FTP server, the server does not notify anyone the files have arrived. The third problem is that many organizations do not have a full time system administrator to manage the often complicated task of running an FTP server. iNetCourier addresses all of these problems.

First, only a web browser is needed to transfer files with iNetCourier. This makes it easy for someone unfamiliar with FTP to upload a file. Second, each time a file is uploaded, iNetCourier sends an email to the designated addresses to notify someone that files have arrived. This can save a lot of time and energy that is wasted by constantly checking the FTP server to see if that important file has arrived. Third, iNetCourier has a simple and easy to use interface for managing transfer sites and accounts. You don't need to be a full time system administrator to set up and use iNetCourier.
