Facebook Exporter for iPhoto 1.0.5 - Send photos to Facebook

The name says it all about Facebook Exporter for iPhoto. This application lets you work straight from your iPhoto library and decide which photos you'll share with your friends on your Facebook account.

All you need to do is select the photos you want to share and click on 'Export' in your iPhoto menu. In the Facebook Exporter window you'll first have to log in to your Facebook account, then select whether to create a new album or add the photos to an existing one.

What I liked in Facebook Exporter is that you can easily add captions to your pictures and tag friends. To do this just move the little square onto a person in the photo and type in their name.

Once your pictures are ready all it takes is to press the 'Export' button. You'll still have to open up your Facebook account though as the uploaded photos will only be set as pending, until you approve of them in your account. A good way of ensuring the right photos are uploading yet it makes the processing a little longer.

Facebook Exporter for iPhoto makes it easy to upload your favorite pictures onto your Facebook account.

Gallery Designer 1.0.9 - One-stop solution to publish photos, videos and audio

Most multimedia publishing programs only allow you to publish one type of format be it photos, video or audio - Gallery Designer allows you to publish all 3 at once and does all the HTML coding for you.

Everything is explained and taken step by step until your gallery is online with no further effort required on your part. To get going, first of all you're asked which image files you want to upload. Secondly, you're asked what title you want to give the album and the layout parameters - how big, what style etc. Then, you simply click "Build" and the software whizzes into action building a perfect HTML gallery, complete with thumbnails, for publishing on the net.

Once ready, you are given detailed control over exactly how you want the gallery to look such as by changing the thumbnails to full image size, the titles, layout gallery style, border colors etc. If you see another gallery online that you like developed using Gallery Designer, you can even borrow that template or alternatively, design your own.

With support for for a wide range of video and photo formats and even support for text files, Gallery Designer takes the pain out of coding your own online gallery.

Slideshow Magic 5.0.5 - Build professional-looking slideshows and presentations

Slideshows are one of the best ways to add colour and life to a photo collection no matter what the subject matter.

Slideshow Magic is aimed at both home users and business professionals who want to impress friends or colleagues with their photo slideshow creations. Best of all, it doesn't require the viewer to have the program installed as all slideshows can be saved in any QuickTime compatible format.

The easy to use interface is somewhat like that of a video editor allowing you to add music or audio tracks either for the whole slideshow or just specific segments. You can add some impressive transitions and titles much in the same way as you do with Windows Movie Maker for example. The program also features a useful guide to help you get your photos online or burnt to DVD. However, unfortunately the program doesn't provide either it's own webspace or burner for uploading and saving photos. For uploading, you'll need an FTP client and web host and for burning, a third party burner such as Nero.

In addition, although it's a cross platform application, sharing with other platforms requires some form of network solution between clients (although this needn't be something complicated - a program like MSN Live Messenger is enough

Slideshow Magic is a relatively cheap but powerful way to get your photos either online or burnt to DVD.

ShuffleSaver is a screensaver file for Mac that allows you to display Flickr and iPhoto pictures. While the display preferences on your Mac already let you show your iPhoto albums, it's nice to finally get the option to show Flickr photos.

ShuffleSaver only displays public photos, even if you select a user's collection. You can also filter out by newest or most interesting photos on Flickr. ShuffleSaver lets you choose only three tags by which to filter public photos.

If you want to control the way images appear, make sure to check out the hotkeys in ShuffleSaver's options.

ShuffleSaver only offers four different transition types and we have noticed that pictures at times appear distorted. Also keep in mind that display is limited to 500 pictures a day, and that these are refreshed every day.

ShuffleSaver offers an easy way of enjoying Flickr public photos every day as a screensaver.

These days, when it comes to publishing your own photo albums and sharing them with your friends there are many programs to choose from. JALbum is a free and intuitive tool to edit your photos and prepare good looking albums.

Although the interface feels a little crowded it will provide a good way of exploring your folders for pictures and quickly selecting the ones you want to put into your album. JALbum also includes a good set of editing tools to tweak your pictures a bit, like removing red eyes, blurring or sharpening.

However the strongest feature of the application is certainly making albums. This is very easy to do and JAlbum comes with a number of styles to start out with. You can also download more skins from the developer's website. Once you're album is done, you can either upload it to your JAlbum account, if you have one, or to any other server if you have the login details.

With a good set of editing tools, and a straightforward process, the free JAlbum makes for a great way of creating photo albums to share with your friends.

PictureSync 1.8 r15 - Share your pictures online

After taking a picture, the next step of any digital photographer is to share it online. PictureSync lets you upload pictures from your Mac onto your web accounts.

The application works with a wide range of services, main ones being Flickr, Facebook, Zoomr or PhotoBucket. The authenticating process to these services is a little painful, as you need to open up your browser to log into them. Once set up though, uploading is seamless.

PictureSync only works with three photo applications, iPhoto, Expression Media, Aperture so if you use Lightroom or any other software you'll have to dig into your folders to get your pictures. PictureSync includes a slider window from which you can edit and check information and metadata in pictures. However you won't be able to add specific features each web service offers, like tags in Flickr.

Want to quickly share photos online? PictureSync is a good solution, if not somewhat limited in features and integration with photo software.

Shoebox 1.7.2 - Organize your photos by content

Shoebox is an alternative to iPhoto which lets you store and view a great number of pictures on your Mac.

Graced with an attractive interface, Shoebox is a very enjoyable application to use. You can see all your different pictures in a thumbnail view and still get the hierarchical keyword structure at the top of the application window. Shoebox also offers a number of different views including full screen to really enjoy your shots. Shoebox allows you to tag your pictures, which is probably the best way to keep track of all of them and can automatically import your snaps from iPhoto.

In terms of performance, Shoebox is definitely faster than iPhoto in processing and displaying pictures. Shoebox also offers Spotlight searches and advanced searching capabilities via multiple criteria, which is absolutely essential if you're dealing with a large photo library. We also enjoyed using filters and creating private catalogs.

However, Shoebox lacks any option to print out books, calendars or stamps. Neither does it let you send your snaps to a photosharing site like Flickr, something which all photo viewers should offer by now. It will let you burn discs or easily make backups though. Users have also complained about issues with slideshow view and the fact that Shoebox is limited to one computer, which is annoying if you need to upload your photos to two different Macs.

Despite not offering any printing options or photosharing online, Shoebox is a very fast photo viewer with a good keyword organization and tag management. Recommended if you're tired of iPhoto.

JetPhoto Studio 3.0 - A free photo organizer and web publisher

JetPhoto Studio stores and organizes all your digital shots.

JetPhoto Studio will import pictures from your camera as soon as it is connected to your PC. We like how the main interface includes a calendar to let you browse photos by date. Jet Photo Studio has fairly basic editing tools, and functions like crop, sepia, black and white, image contrast, and auto enhancing, which will allow you to personalize your photos. You can also batch resize your photos and protect them with a watermark. JetPhoto Studio also allows you to rate photos by adding a star next to the ones you prefer. You can set tags to quickly identify related pictures, but annoyingly you’ll have to create new ones for each individual album.

Making screensavers, wallpapers and slide-shows is extremely easy and quick. You can also create two types of Flash movies, stand-alone or deluxe, the first being a typical slide show, and the second showing an animated thumbnail list of your selected images. The only downside is that you can’t set the types of animations and speed of transitions.

You can use JetPhoto Studio to send images, via MMS or infrared, to your friends’ mobiles, yet however exciting this sounds, the feature is not really up to standards. You’ll actually need to know your friend’s mobile brand and exact model and even if you do, there’s no telling whether the service will work in your country. We found that JetPhoto Studio did not support this feature in Spain. Another promising feature is locating photos thanks to GPS and tagging them on Google Earth.

JetPhoto Studio also allows you to quickly upload images to the online photo sharing service Flickr, and it’s very easy to order quality printed copies via PrintExpress. The JetPhoto Server tool is also a good way for anybody with some scripting knowledge to upload and edit their photo albums onto their weblog or personal website.

Jet Photo Studio lets you manipulate photos in all sorts of ways, however some of its functions are not up to standards.

Don't know what to do about those vacation photos stored on your Mac? Want to create an original photo album out of them? You can use scrapbooking software like iRemember. The application lets you drag and drop your photos, arrange them how you like and then share the created scrapbook in many different ways.

iRemember is a great tool for beginners as it offers a friendly interface and is pretty straightforward. The editing tools are not incredibly advanced but allow you to do the essentials, like coloring, adding lines, text and shapes. Surprisingly though, you won't be able to flip images horizontally or vertically. The most exciting bit is all the extra material like backgrounds, patterns or clip art that iRemember includes to customize your own albums.

I'm a big fan of Flickr, the online photo sharing website. The only thing that annoys me is having to connect to the site to receive news on activity in my Flickr account.

1001 is a desktop client that lets you not only upload your photos to Flickr but also receive notifications on new photos from your contacts. You can customize your own streams of photos, which shows up as a patchwork of thumbnails in the interface, and refresh it manually. The application also features a pop up menu by which you'll be able to select which stream to follow.

Uploading with 1001 is also very simple. Simply select your photo, type in the title and text, select the privacy level and scaling. From the side of the interface you'll also be able to select tags to associate to your picture and groups to send it to. This last feature I really like because sending pictures to groups one by one on the Flickr site is really a hassle. Luckily 1001 can also batch upload pictures.

1001 can be prone to the odd glitch every now and then, but it remains fairly stable most of the time.

Despite some little glitches, 1001 is a nice tool to follow your Flickr photo streams and upload your pictures to your Flickr account straight from your desktop.

Photonic 1.0 Beta 4 - A Mac Flickr desktop client

Flickr is a great site to publish pictures or simply browse photos. While you can upload your photos directly to the site, it may be easier to use a desktop application.

Photonic is a bit more than a simple Flickr uploading tool. Consider it a full fledged client to browse the website and your photos from your desktop. You can organize and select the photos to upload to Flickr directly from its sleek interface. The GUI is well built and pictures are easy to browse through. Photonic also shows tags and titles for each photo.

What I really like about Photonic is how natural it makes browsing Flickr and your photos from your desktop. From the list on the left side of the interface you view your sets, contacts, groups and even search and explore by date, tag or keyword. In all, Photonic aims to make it unnecessary to go to the Flickr website.

The only trouble is that Photonic is still a little unstable and the odd behaviour can happen every now and then. We'll have to wait for a proper 1.0 release for a stable version of the program.

Still in Beta mode, Photonic is a promising desktop client for Flickr, with a very nice interface.

Jomic 0.9.25 - Enjoy your comic book archives

Jomic is a an excellent viewer for Mac comic books fans.

This open source application makes for a really handy comic book viewer. First of all, it handles of all the major image formats, including PNG and JPEG, and even supports comic book specific formats such as CBZ and CBR.

The interface is simple enough so that you make the most of your comics. You can rotate sets any which way you want and even alternate reading order from right to left, highly useful if you want to read a manga for example.

Jomic includes a useful zoom tool, with which you'll be able to zoom in on any point of a comic, and enjoy details or examine drawings more closely. You can also extract comics which you can particularly like and save them onto your Mac, however Jomic won't tell you where it extracts to. It should normally be on the Desktop though.

Jomic is an excellent comic book viewer for Mac, which supports lots of image formats, has a good zoom tool and can rotate comics in any way. Recommended for comic book addicts.

MemoryMiner 1.80 - Digital storytelling

MemoryMiner is an application used to organize and share digital media using a simple, yet powerful metaphor, namely "People, Places and Time." At its core, are a simple set of tools for treating photos as individual frames in a type of endless story board. A variety of other digital media, including sound, video, documents and URLs, can be added to each frame. The story elements are linked to each other by way of annotation layers identifying the people, places, dates and events captured in each frame, and can be exported for automatic publishing online.

MemoryMiner can be used for a variety of different purposes, from personal history and education through to art projects and marketing for business. Whatever your purpose, the process of creating and publishing a digital story with MemoryMiner is fundamentally the same:

Import images (simply by dragging and dropping from a folder or photo organizer like iPhoto)

Create of a list of relevant people and locations

Connect people and locations to images

Add descriptions to images

Attach other digital media to images

Select images for export (other relevant media will be automatically selected)

Export your photo-data package to a server of your choice (including .Mac)

View your digital story online
