Like the basic version, the interface of Contenta Converter Premium is very simple. The toolbar across the top gives you access to the program’s main features, all of which are available in the Premium version. These include advanced features such as read/write of JPEG 2000 files, reading of RAW formats, PSD formats etc.

You can convert photos between formats (both popular and less common ones), reduce the size of images and automatically rename them and sort them into subfolders according to their metadata. Contenta Converter also lets you preview images and check the amount of space you save when optimizing their size.

In the Premium version, there are additional features such as the ability to flip and crop images, converting multiple PDFs to images and adding special effects.

However, the main problem with Contenta Converter Premium is the same as the Basic i.e. if your metadata for images is very generic or inaccurate, it doesn't work very well as it uses this information to identify files.

Overall though, Contenta Converter Premium is a very powerful tool for sorting, renaming, converting and manipulating images that have the correct metadata attached.

Batch Image Converter is very simple - just a single interface with drop down "advanced" section. You choose your destination file parameters - JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP or GIF - and one of Batch Image Converter's six size settings, including email and custom.

You can then drag and drop your photos into Batch Image Converter. The conversion takes place immediately, and you can view a log of the process if you want. Underneath the advanced options, you'll be able to specify where you want Batch Image Converter to save the new files - if you don't, they'll be mixed in with the originals.

Batch Image Converter is pretty simple, but for uncomplicated conversions, it's perfect.

However, there's no denying that Polaroids have struggled to compete in the digital era and Poladroid attempts to ensure Polaroid's survival even longer with a simple conversion tool that gives your photos the Polaroid look. These again though are rather annoying - when you just want a Polaroid picture to impress friends with, it ends up with scratches and smudges across it. It would be preferable to turn this feature off completely if you wanted to.

Poladroid is just like having your own Polaroid camera - in fact too realistic at times because it adds effects that you don't necessarily want but it's one of the best and easiest ways to give your photos that Polaroid touch.

Most recently, GraphicConverter has been updated with a slick new Cocoa interface which makes it look more like iPhoto. Regular users may or may not like this shift closer to iPhoto but it does make GraphicConverter slightly easier to use. The functionality is till pretty much the same though. GraphicConverter comes with two browsing views which let you dig in deep in folders and find your images. It can also convert images into most of the popular image formats out there.

Although there clearly aren't as many editing tools as in Aperture or Lightroom, GraphicConverter comes with a very wide list of filters and effects that you can place onto your images all of which are accessible from the menu bar. GraphicConverter lacks the more advanced web sharing features that are integrated into iPhoto however.

Thanks to a revamped interface plus some powerful and accessible features, GraphicConverter is a solid photo application for managing, converting and editing your pictures.

All you need to do is set the DropJPG icon onto your Dock and drop any item onto it to convert them. Simple as that. Naturally you're best choosing individual files and not trying to convert batches all at once.

You can also choose to delete the original after conversion and have DropJPG close after conversion. If you wish to store all your files in one particular folder, DropJPG will also allow you to decide what files newly created images are stored in.

Rawker allows you to convert a single RAW file or batch process a folder of RAW files. Alternatively, you can set it to automatically scan a specific folder every few seconds. You can modify settings to optimize the appearance of your image and these can be saved in presets or files.

Rawker produces TIFF image files with 16 bits color depth (48 bits per RGB pixel), PNG (16 bits) or JPEG (8 bits). Metadata is preserved throughout the conversions which can be done in one of two modes: using Apple's Core Graphics (Quartz) technology or Dave Coffin's DCRaw tool. DCRaw doesn't need to be installed separately because it's embedded into Rawker. However, there is no way to adjust white balance or the DPI settings for the saved file.

Overall though, Rawker is an immensely useful and free tool for photographers and those needing to perform RAW conversions.

Changing the viewing size allows you to view at different zoom levels and all conversions are usually in good quality although there are inevitably some degradations. WMF Converter is a simple and effective tool for anyone wanting to view WMF on Mac although you'll have to cough-up $20 for the full version.

Photo converters always win points with me when they allow you to preview the final product before you convert and Contenta RAW Converter does not disappoint. Contenta RAW Converter reads all major RAW formats and gives you full previews before conversions whether they are single files or batches. Although it doesn't support every digital camera out there, if you've got one of the major brands then you should be OK.

You can rename and organize your photos in subfolders using EXIF, IPTC and XMP tags which makes them much easier to organize. Of course, the conversion and reduction of RAW files makes them much easier to send via e-mail to friends and family too. One handy extra is a thumbnail generator that turns images into thumbnails, removes metadata and generally makes them much easier to publish on the net.

TransformPicture also allows you to simultaneously convert to other graphic formats such as PNG, BMP, TIFF, JPEG, JPEG200, GIF and PICT. In the preference window you can configure various settings but you can't create set templates for repeat resizing or rescaling jobs or. You can however define the settings to be implemented by default or use a percentage scaler to determine the width and length of each image prior to conversion.

On the plus side, it can process multiple images simultaneously simply by allowing you to drag a folder of images to your window or from the application in Finder. This makes batch processing of images an absolute breeze.

TransformPicture is a very easy to use and effective scaling tool which makes resizing images very simple indeed.

Icon2Image is designed to help you get the best out of your Mac and create thumbnail images in multiple formats that will grace OS X. Icon2Image allows you to create image thumbnails of files, folders and disk icons in just about any image formats. The problem with Icon2Image is that the installation is a little complicated. It's not just a case of dragging the program icon to your applications folder.

First what you need to do is place the contextual menu plugin in "/Library/Contextual Menu Items/". You must then place the preference pane in "/Library/PreferencePanes". You then have to logout and log back in to load the contextual menu which is a bit annoying. Finally, to activate the Icon2Image Demo you need to open the "Password" tab of the Icon2Image System Preference pane to activate this product for the first time.

This rather annoying installation process sets the mood for what it quite an awkward product to use and it does make for easy access via Finder's context menu. An accompanying system preference pane enables you to configure various options such as the background color or size of the generated images. It gives you a ton of image formats to save in but the overall feeling is one that Icon2Image should have been made much easier for the first time user to run.

Icon2Image can help you create image thumbnails in many different formats but the hassle of installation and operation may put-off first time users.
