CatEye 1.002-Add special effects to iChat and Photo Booth

http://cateye.en.softonic.com/mac

CatEye is a collection of eight bundles of special effects for iChat and Photo Booth.

The exact bundles of special effects it features are RetroPixels: retro art effects from the sixties and seventies, LoveFor80s: retro video effects from the eighties, BentPels: image warping effects from the nineties, FewTile: image tiling effects and BoobToob: analog TV effects.

Each bundle of effects in CatEye can be installed separately and they are conveniently grouped together when presented in Photo Booth. When you want to spice-up a conversation or surprise a friend, activate the Pong video game and watch balls fly across the screen.

If you're looking for a retro effect, then how about rolling back to the days of VHS video including a green hue for a really authentic worn effect? Alternatively, for fans of flower power CatEye has some cool flower child polaroid style effects too.

Although the selection of effects in CateEye is generous, only a few of them are really well done. Many of them are either poorly designed or are hard to identify exactly what they're supposed to be.

Nevertheless, CatEye is a fun way to spice-up iChat and Photo Booth sessions on your Mac.

Download CatEye 1.002 in Softonic

Nikon Camera Control Pro 2.0-Remotely control Nikon digital SLRs

http://nikon-camera-control-pro.en.softonic.com/mac

Nikon's are highly regarded as the creme-de-la-creme of digital SLR cameras and very popular among discerning Mac users.

Nikon Camera Control Pro remotely controls most functions of Nikon digital SLRs from a computer that is connected via USB cable or though a wired or wireless LAN. It enables you to remotely use the advanced functions of the latest D3 and D300 models such as the Viewer for previewing and selecting images prior to transferring them to your Mac.

Of course, Nikon Camera Control Pro is also integrated with Nikon's photofinishing software <taglink type="program" country="en" id="63633">Capture NX</taglink>. You can control a huge amount camera settings including the exposure mode, shutter speed, and aperture. The main problem that users complain of is that this software doesn't update itself automatically properly. In the case of those on Mac OS X version 10.3.9 this is a good thing however as Nikon Camera Control Pro is no longer supported so DO NOT update to this version if you are currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Nikon Camera Control Pro is the only effective way to control your Nikon remotely and complements well all of Nikon's software.

Download Nikon Camera Control Pro 2.0 in Softonic

ImageJ 1.46 d-Scriptable Java app for scientific image processing

http://imagej.en.softonic.com/mac

I'm not a big fan of Java based apps but the fact the it works across platforms (in theory anyway but not always in practice) makes it a popular choice with many developers.

And there aren't many Java apps like ImageJ which specialize in analyzing images. ImageJ runs either as an online applet or as a downloadable application which you'll find here. ImageJ can display, edit, analyze, process, save and print 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit images and supports most major formats including TIFF, GIF, JPEG, BMP, DICOM, FITS and "raw".

The main use of ImageJ is that it can calculate area and pixel values which may be useful for graphic designers. It does however go a little beyond that too allowing you to measure distances and angles, create density histograms and also line profile plots. It supports other standard image processing functions too such as contrast manipulation, sharpening, smoothing, edge detection and median filtering.

Although ImageJ can be a bit slow in Java, its a decent image analysis tool considering its completely free.

Download ImageJ 1.46 d in Softonic

ImageMagick 6.7.3-4-Convert and resize images using Terminal

http://imagemagick.en.softonic.com/mac

ImageMagick is a set of UNIX tools that can be used to read, write, and manipulate images in almost any format including TIFF, JPEG, PNG, PDF, PhotoCD, and GIF.

The advantage of ImageMagick is that it can be used to create images dynamically, making it suitable for Web apps. In addition, you can resize, rotate, sharpen, color reduce and add special effects to an image with ImageMagick. However, ImageMagick is strictly for those familiar with the Terminal or command line as there is no GUI. You can only make changes to images using commands such as "$magick> convert rose.jpg rose.png".

For those familiar with programming languages, you can use C, C++, Perl, Java, PHP, Python, or Ruby to make changes. A high-quality 2D renderer is also included which provides SVG capabilities. If you are familiar with programming commands, then the range of actions possible with ImageMagick is truly impressive, including conversions, resizing, transparencies, animated GIFs and shape drawing. However, the lack of GUI will exclude most people from using it.

If you know your way around programming languages and need a powerful command line based tool, Image Magick is worth exploring.

Cameras 1.0.1-Lightweight and elegant camera manager

http://cameras.en.softonic.com/mac

Managing multiple cameras on your Mac can be a headache, with generic disk images littered across your desktop representing each device.

That's not to mention the problems you may experience with different applications every time you connect a new camera. If you're suffering this problem then I can't recommend Cameras highly enough. It enables you to assign different applications to work with different cameras, makes it easy to see what is connected, and it's all presented in an elegant and lightweight interface.

Despite the name, Cameras actually works with all camera-enabled devices including the iPhone and many mobile phones with cameras. One nice feature of Cameras is the ability to download photos on connection. I often find that Picasa takes ages to detect my camera and when it does, it spends ages building previews. Camera removes this problem by instantly downloading photos to a specified folder as soon as the device is connected.

I also loved the fact that Cameras supports Growl alerts so that you have definitive confirmation when a device has or has not been connected. This is far preferable to the usual procedure of connecting a camera and then wondering whether it connected or not until the disk images appears.

If you only use one camera, then Camera may not be of much use but if you're dealing with any more than two devices, I highly recommend it.

Download Cameras 1.0.1 in Softonic

http://kuler-desktop.en.softonic.com/mac

kuler desktop is a little widget designed to give you color inspiration at the click of a button, with community content taken from the kuler web app.

If you're a designer who gets stuck for ideas or just someone looking for color themes for their home or wherever, having color palettes to hand can be really useful. Based on Adobe AIR, kuler desktop is a neat widget that lets you browse new and popular color themes from Adobe's kuler site.

The kuler desktop interface is really attractive, and you can 'tear off' any theme you like and drag it around your desktop to wherever you need it. If you use any of Adobe's Creative Suite (3 and above) programs like Photoshop, you can import any theme directly into your work.

The only problem with kuler desktop is it sometimes struggles to connect to its API. It's annoying having to restart the app because it's not refreshing images. However, most of the time it's fine and can be really useful.

If you're looking for some inspiration, check out kuler desktop for tons of great color themes.

Download kuler desktop 2.1 in Softonic

Picaboo 3.2.0.2070-A nifty way to create and buy photographic masterpieces

http://picaboo.en.softonic.com/mac

Picaboo is a desktop app that lets you create different types of projects with your own digital images.

There are a lot of different photo editors out there that let you manipulate your own digital images. Picaboo adds an additional service of allowing you to be able to purchase and have a hard copy of your creations sent to you.

Picaboo requires no programming or design knowledge. You just pick the type of project you'd like to make and follow the step by step instructions. With Picaboo, you can make calendars, collages, photo albums and other creative content by choosing photos you already have saved on your computer and uploading them into the program.

On top of its easy navigability and usability, Picaboo is also a gorgeous app. It's got some great backgrounds to display your photos on while you're arranging them. Conveniently enough, the backgrounds aren't in the least bit distracting either.

In addition to being able to make your own different types of photographic content, there's also a convenient feature called BookGenie you can choose if you're not feeling all that creative yourself. BookGenie will automatically pull photos from your computer and then creates a read-to-edit photo book for you.

Of course, the big downside (or perk, depending on how you're looking at it!) is that to receive hard copies of your creations, you'll have to shell out some money. Picaboo's ultimate service is photo printing. Of course, if you just want to share your creations on your computer with friends and family, that doesn't even cost you a dime.

Note that Picaboo requires Adobe AIR to run.

Download Picaboo 3.2.0.2070 in Softonic

Flowpaint 0.2-Virtual canvas with an emphasis on brush variety

http://flowpaint.en.softonic.com

Flowpaint is a virtual painting app that allows your to cover your canvas as if you were using real brushes and paints.

Any painter who has used a virtual drawing app can be forgiven for not really enjoying the experience - they're just not realistic. Luckily there are graphic editors that try to emulate, with greater or lesser success, the sensations you get when painting with actual pens and brushes, and not a computer mouse or a digital tablet. Flowpaint is one of those editors, but even though it's a good start, it still needs quite a lot of development.

Flowpaint doesn't require installation, only the <taglink type="program" country="en" id="9160">Java Runtime Environment</taglink>. It features a very simple interface with no configuration options at all, just the ability to save, clear picture and undo. The right-side panel includes all the drawing tools, though surprisingly Flowpaint has no color palette – you simply have different types of brushes, each one of them with a different color.

Flowpaint's tools are divided into Sketching, Painting and Effects. The bottom half of the panel allows you to make tweaks to these effects, but you'll just have to experiment, as it's not at all clear what each option does. Despite these limitations, Flowpaint is an attractive painting app, perfect to start experimenting with realistic digital tools, but there's just no way it's as advanced as other programs like <taglink type="program" country="en" id="38751">ArtWeaver</taglink> or <taglink type="program" country="en" id="42899">TwistedBrush</taglink>.

Flowpaint is a simple drawing tool with an interesting array of options, but it still falls short of expectations when compared to other similar programs.

Download Flowpaint 0.2 in Softonic

TexMakerX is an application that integrates many tools needed to develop documents with LaTeX.

Amongst its many features are a unicode editor to write your LaTeX source files (including syntax highlighting, undo-redo, search-replace etc), 370 mathematical symbols and wizards to generate code. It also enables you to view documents by structure for easier navigation of a document. In other words, TexMakerX adds hundreds of symbols and characters to your computer that wouldn't normally be available.

Although most general users may not find a use for LaTeX, it is particularly popular with mathematicians as it allows them to perform complex formulas which they can edit far more easily. TexMakerX allows you to work with multiple documents in separate tabs with numbered lines to make distinguishing projects and documents easier. Finally, TexMakerX also features an error console on as well as a spelling tool to keep mistakes to a minimum.

TexMakerX will only mainly appeal to those with special typographical needs such as mathematicians but for anyone involved in LaTeX it's a powerful tool.

Download TexMakerX 3.2.2 in Softonic

GPSPhotoLinker 1.6.4-Add GPS positioning and location data to your photos

http://gpsphotolinker.en.softonic.com/mac

One of the major innovations in the latest release of iPhoto was the addition of Geotagging to your photo collection.

However, if like me you don't use iPhoto, you'll need an alternative way to automatically add geotags to your photos. GPSPhotoLinker adds GPS positioning and location data to your photos as long as your camera has GPS tagging enabled. The latitude and longitude recorded by your GPS unit are linked and saved to your photos. GPSPhotoLinker automatically enters the city, state and country into the metadata.

Adding geographic information to an item is known as geotagging and if you're not convinced of it's worth, check out the developer's <http://www.flickr.com/photos/earlyinnovations/map/">mapped web galleries. There are four main steps to tagging with GPSPhotoLinker. Connect your GPS device to your computer, Choose your GPS receiver type, Download them and finally, "Load" them. All that's left for you to do is set the Time Zone and to choose a tracking point. Another bonus of using GPSPhotoLinker is that using Spotlight, you can easily search any of the metadata right in Finder making it easier to find your photos.

Considering it's completely free to use GPSPhotoLinker is an excellent application for anyone that wants to add geotags to their photo collection.

Download GPSPhotoLinker 1.6.4 in Softonic

PhotoRocket is a simple application that allows you to send photos to social networking sites from your Mac or iPhone.

For example, PhotoRocket can import photos from iPhoto or Photo Booth and send them directly to Facebook, Flickr, Google or Shutterfly. If you create a PhotoRocket account, you can also upload images directly to your web gallery and share them with others instantly. Alternatively, just drag photos to PhotoRocket in your Dock and it will instantly upload them ready for sharing.

One good thing about PhotoRocket is that there are no limits on the resolution of images. However, one rather concerning aspect is that the terms and conditions seem to state that you may lose copyright control of your images once they are uploaded.

Those who don't want to see their images stockpiled in a photo archive for commercial use by PhotoRocket may therefore prefer to send their images by more traditional methods such as email or uploading them directly to their favorite social networking sites.

PhotoRocket is a simple application that offers easy, resolution-unlimited photo sharing but may pose some copyright issues for some.

Download PhotoRocket 0.10.157 in Softonic

Flickr Uploadr 3.2.1-Publish to Flickr from your Mac

http://flickr-uploadr.en.softonic.com/mac

The Flickr Uploadr is a must for anybody with a Flickr account. It avoids you the pain of opening your browser to upload your photos to your account. The application lets you create photosets and add tags to your photos. You can also manage the privacy and safety levels for each photos, to allow everyone, or just your friends or family to view them.

The application uploads your photos fairly quickly, although that also depends on your bandwidth size. It will also let you know how much of your monthly upload limit you've used up. If we were really picky we 'd say the program should automatically sign you into Flickr instead of opening a browser window to give you access to your account.
