iGenres 1.0.2 - Change the pictures that represent genres in iTunes

The genre images that go with iTunes can be dull and there's no way of being able to change them within iTunes itself.

iGenres allows you to easily replace covers that are listed in iTunes to represent every genre with some really cool alternatives. The developer's website gives you a great idea of what's possible with some stunning creations for genres such as Britpop, Indie and Jazz. To change an image, simply select the desired gender and drag the image you want to use from now on. iGenres automatically resizes images so that they fit correctly.

If for any reason you feel that that you don't like the image you've selected, iGenres offer an undo button which takes you back to your original starting point. There are literally hundreds of images to choose from covering every imaginable genre. There's not much to criticise it for really other than it may have been nice to have some kind of user forum where other users could share their creations.

iGenres allows you to make very simple image changes to genres in iTunes that don't make much difference to your listening pleasure but give your collection a touch of individuality.

Syncopation from Sonzea provides a hands-free solution to keep your iTunes music collection synchronized across multiple computers running Mac OS X. Once installed on two or more Macs, Syncopation goes to work, finding music that is on one computer but not the others, and automatically transfers the songs between them so that they both contain your complete music collection.

Leave it running in the background and it will keep your iTunes libraries up-to-date. When you make changes to your song files on one computer, Syncopation updates your other computers with those changes. If you add files to one of your computers, Syncopation replicates the new songs to your other computers, whether they are iTunes Music Store purchases or tracks ripped from your own CDs. Syncopation works over your Ethernet or wireless network.

Dupin 1.4 - Duplicates manager for iTunes

Wanna get rid of all those annoying duplicate files you have in iTunes? Dupin is a good tool to use. Thanks to its iTunes like interface, you can easily view your songs and playlists. Search and filter songs based on numerous criteria like artist, album or size. Luckily Dupin doesn't limit itself to songs but can also search through other iTunes files like podcasts, audiobooks or movies. The program can help you locate files in Finder and in iTunes and even find duplicates in libraries from other users.

In terms of performance, Dupin can feel a bit slow at times, and we found that it could slow down iTunes if it was opened up at the same time. When searching for duplicates in smart playlists Dupin is also not as effective as in normal libraries. Finally some users might be annoyed at having to examine every track to make sure that all duplicates have been eliminated.

Overall though Dupin is a handy tool to quickly find any duplicates in your iTunes libraries.

Managing large music collections is never easy. iTunes is one of the best programs out there for this sort of thing but it's not great for controlling music in motion. TotalTunes Control basically gives you total control over your music reproduction in a way iTunes can't. TotalTunes Control sleeps in your taskbar until required when it presents you with a compact window to control everything in iTunes. It can be recalled or closed at any time and crucially, lets you assign keyboard shortcuts for iTunes.

The shortcuts consist of the normal play/pause/forward and rewind functions although they are not easily configured. You also get the progress and volume sliders and toggles for repeat and shuffle and a source menu from which you can change between the library and any of the playlists you might have. The main problem is that you have to accept the program's default settings which is not ideal but at least better than what iTunes can offer. All in all, this program offers a much easier way to manage iTunes in motion.

iTunes is the best music player out there, but don't you wish you could control it without interrupting your task at hand? Now you can. Control iTunes. Whether it's to pause the player, adjust the volume, skip a track or rate a song, you can do all that and more with simple customizable keystrokes.

Why bring up iTunes just to see what track is playing? SizzlingKeys features a floating window that shows you the current song name, artist and more. Place it anywhere you wish on the screen by simply dragging it. Having all the features you can imagine is useless if the app is difficult and confusing to use. That's why we make ease-of-use our top priority. Customizing SizzlingKeys cannot be easier.

What SizzlingKeys lets you do:

Control iTunes player

Rate songs

Select a playlist (searchable!)

Search for songs

Shows you the current song

DesktopLyrics 1.0.6 - Your favorite iTunes lyrics delivered to your desktop

You'll get more out of your favorite songs if you know the lyrics - or at least, you'll stop singing the wrong lyrics and looking like an idiot.

If you're a big iTunes user, then you'll need DesktopLyrics to deliver lyrics directly to your desktop as songs play without any effort on your part. However, the lyrics are delivered in a Window that doesn't automatically appear on top of everything else so it can remain hidden. It would have been useful if the developers had somehow added an option to set the DesktopLyrics window on top but as things are, you'll have to minmize other windows to see the lyrics.

DesktopLyrics can also be a bit hit and miss as regards the lyrics it selects. Usually, you'll get the right song but occasionally it will either select something completely wrong or worse, nothing at all, leaving you with just a blank box. It seems that Desktop Lyrics doesn't use a wide range of databases to retrieve info which is why this occurs.

There are probably better lyric finders out there although DesktopLyrics is fine for anyone with a pretty mainstream music collection who doesn't mind minimizing windows to see it.

Breakaway offers a little feature that you won't find in iTunes: it will automatically pause the media player when the jack of your haedphone is plugged out. This will prevent you from embarassing situations, especially if your music is on really loud.

Breakaway only takes a few seconds to set up. Make sure you check 'headphones mode' to make it work and 'resume play on reinsert' to automatically restart your music once you plug your headphones back in. You can also set a mute key and have it force open iTunes.

Breakaway is what we like to call a niche application. It those one specific thing, but does it well. If you find yourself listening to your music with your headphones most of the time and don't want to find yourself in the unpleasant situation of having it blaring out of your Mac when you remove your headphones then this is for you.

iVolume 3.1.1 - Play your songs at the right volume in iTunes

iTunes uses a very fast algorithm to quickly analyze the volume of its songs. It's fast, but it's not very accurate. iVolume corrects the volume information that iTunes has calculated with better values. Therefore an algorithm is used that is oriented on the perception of the human ears. The result is a huge improvement of the 'Sound Check' function. You never have to readjust the main volume again when playing back your songs in random order. This is perfect e. g. for music on partys or hearing songs in random order with the iPod.

iVolume does not re-encode your audio files, so there is no loss in quality. Technically it looks for the tag named 'iTunNORM' that iTunes has put into your songs and iVolume just replaces the embedded value describing the volume of the song with a better one.

iVolume works closely with iTunes. Instead of reinventing the wheel or complicated handling with files at the filesystem level, iTunes is used as the interface to select the songs you want to adjust with iVolume. After selecting songs in iTunes, just switch over to iVolume and hit the 'Adjust' button to make the selected songs to the same volume level.

You know who you are. You’ve got thousands of song titles in your iTunes music library that you are constantly adding to and you’ve got a playlist for every occasion. You listen to your music at work and while you’re playing. So when you want to change a song or browse all of the albums by your favorite artist or just pause the currently playing song, why should you have to stop what you’re doing and go to iTunes? You shouldn’t have to, and now you don’t.

You Control: Tunes is a free utility that gives you complete control over iTunes from the Mac OS X menu bar. You don’t have to stop whatever it is you may be doing, switch to iTunes, take care of business and then go back to your original app. You can now simply pull down your very own custom menu that gives you access to the iTunes controls (Next, Previous, Volume, Play/Pause, Stop) as well as displaying the current track, artist and album. You can also navigate your entire iTunes music library from this menu as well so you never leave your current application.

With Cover Stream you can enjoy the beauty of your iTunes' Cover Flow on your Mac's desktop.

The application takes the feature onto your desktop so you don't even need to have iTunes opened to browse through all your albums. Flip browsing, which lets you turn over an album to view and select a track is something great and that Cover Flow definitely lacks.

Cover Stream also includes playback functions to control your songs and you can use a number of keyboard shortcuts to activate it faster. If you don't necessarily want neither iTunes nor Cover Stream up and cluttering your desktop you can keep them minimized and use the Mini-Flow view, much more discreet yet displaying the album cover and essential information.

On the whole Cover Stream performs well, however it can be known to use up a lot of RAM. We suggest trying not to have it on all the time.

Despite using up a bit or RAM, Cover Stream is a great way of enjoying Cover Flow and playing your iTunes music from your desktop.

Aurora is a nice little alarm clock for Mac with seamless iTunes support.

Easy to control thanks to a clear interface, Aurora lets you set up multiple alarms and easily configure your wake up time and specific dates for it to ring. It includes a snooze feature for those difficult Monday mornings and lets you set how long the alarm will ring. You can also easily decide which alarm to trigger on which day of the week.

Aurora includes iTunes support, so you can choose from a specific playlist or track to launch in the morning instead of one of the default alarms. We also liked how it can wake up your Mac at a special time of day or slowly put it to sleep, perfect if you want it to slowly turn off your Mac after watching a movie or DVD. Users will also like having remote support, so that you don't have to get up to turn it off.

Because Aurora used to be freeware, old users might be a little disappointed to learn that it now is shareware with the demo limited to 14 days. This is why 22$ might be a little difficult to sacrifice for some users.

Despite the price, Aurora is an excellent alarm clock for Mac with seamless iTunes support and loads of alarm and sleeper functions. Recommended.

Super Analyzer 1.0 - Quick stats on your iTunes collection

If you're anything like me, by now you have a sizable iTunes collection on your Mac. Have you ever thought to release some stats on it, just out of curiosity?

That's what Super Analyzer does. This Java Runtime requires no installation and will extract all the information from your iTunes to produce graphs and charts on your music library. You'll be able to see the evolution of genres, tracks you like, or highest playing times. Super Analyzer will also let you know the most played, highest rated songs and includes a whole list of count stats.

The application only takes a second to launch and generate graphs, though unfortunately you won't be able to play around with the data and arrange the graphs the way you want. Once you realize this, Super Analyzer becomes a bit limited.

All in all a novelty, but lacks the flexibility to really be useful for any iTunes owner.

Fetch Art allows you to download album covers directly from Amazon to your iTunes. It also adds ID3 tags for your MP3 files, so that the album cover can appear when you play the related songs in your iTunes. Fetch Art is integrated into iTunes making it a discreet and yet original add on to your music player.

Harmonic 2.2.1 - Lyrics done right

Harmonic lets you sing back to your favorite iTunes songs straight from your Dashboard. The widget will start as soon as you play a song, displaying the lyrics in a continuous flow. The application is set in a clean interface, which can be customized by choosing on of six colors, 3 text alignments and 3 text sizes.

Harmonic is somewhat limited in the sense that it only works with iTunes and doesn't let you choose the site you want to collect your lyrics from-there stands a risk that you may not find lyrics for lesser known songs. Overall though, Harmonic is an enjoyable widget that loads up quickly and automatically.
