Dock Library 1.0-Change the look and style of your Dock

http://dock-library.en.softonic.com/mac

The Dock is in my opinion one of the best features of OS X but it doesn't come with any alternative templates and styles.

That's where Dock Library steps in to provide you with several different templates and looks for your dock which can be activated in a click. Once you have installed Dock Library, you're presented with the main selection window where you can choose which Dock to activate. The problem is, it's empty so you'll need to download some styles from LeopardDocks.net or LeopardDocks.com. The styles are in zip format but you don't have to unzip them - just upload them to Dock Library and activate them.

There's not much more to Dock Library than that. The top dock in the selection list is always the default one so you can always undo any changes by selecting it. Changes are immediate although you may have to enter your Mac user password. There are no preferences other than whether to choose to check for updates on startup.

It would have been nice to have the styles preloaded into Dock Library by default without having to download them but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's a great little customisation tool.

Download Dock Library 1.0 in Softonic

Magnifique 1.2-Theme-Manager for Leopard

http://magnifique.en.softonic.com/mac

Magnifique is an application that changes the themes of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard at the flick of a switch. In just a few clicks, you can have a totally new look on your Mac.

Best of all, it's completely free but note that it doesn't come pre-installed with themes. You have to download them from the developer's site where you'll find 17 different ones to choose from. If you're a developer, Magnifique can also help you distribute your own themes. In fact, it's a perfect tool for developers that need to find a wider audience for their themes and work.

The interface is fairly self explanatory but the Add Theme button allows you to add themes to your library while the Remove Theme button deletes the selected theme from your themes directory. Make Theme is aimed at developers who want to create their own theme. Refreshing the theme list will add or remove any themes you added or removed while Magnifique is running. Finally, Restart Finder will allow you to see the effects of changing a theme although this is like killing the Finder process in activity manager which I don't like doing at the best of times. Restart Dock does exactly the same thing with the Dock.

Magnifique is an interesting tool although it should be used with care. If you apply a theme and it damages your default OS X theme there's little you can do so make sure you've backed up everything first.

Download Magnifique 1.2 in Softonic

Nocturne 1.0.4-Switch your Mac to night vision

http://nocturne.en.softonic.com/mac

The color blind among you might have noticed that the Universal Access section in Preferences allows you to invert colors on your Mac. Nocturne performs a similar task, however giving you a bit more flexibility.

Accessible from your menu bar, Nocturne lets you switch quickly between what it calls day and night vision. Even if you aren't color blind, you'll notice that night vision is much easier on the eyes when using Nocturne in a low light environment.

Nocturne's preferences can be played around with to customize day and night vision according to your needs. You can disable shadows and your desktop and create your own night vision by selecting two tints from the full color spectrum. You can also leave it in plain black and white.

Nocturne also lets you invert hue and screen. Give it a try to see what feels best for you. I felt the brightness adjustment slider was a bit limited though and couldn't really find a significant difference either way I set it.

Nocturne is a bit more advanced than the color inversion features found in Universal Access.

Download Nocturne 1.0.4 in Softonic

CrystalClear Interface 2.6-Go transparency mad in OS X

http://crystalclear-interface.en.softonic.com/mac

One of the best things about windows is that you can see through them - and CrystalClear Interface thinks the same should apply in OS X.

CrystalClear Interface allows you to add transparency to just about any window in OS X, change the colors of window frames, and even select an entirely new set of default window styles OS X to use.

In reality CrystalClear Interface is not an application but an input manager for Cocoa applications. The amount of customization possible with CrystalClear Interface is a little overwhelming, but that's one of the few downfalls of the program. Note that the latest version does not work on Lion either although the older version 2.5.8.8 works fine on Lion up to version 10.7.3.

You can choose from just about type of customization from making text contrast changes as you change your window's color, frame and transparency, automatically blur the background of windows, turn rectangular layout boxes into beautiful, color-matching rounded ones, and isolating active windows. The four preset themes - Aurora, In The Dark, In The Air and In The Garden - are elegant and to save yourself a lot of messing around, I recommend simply activating one of these.

If you're a big fan of Aqua and all the cool transparent effects it can create, you'll definitely enjoy using CrystalClear Interface.

Download CrystalClear Interface 2.6 in Softonic

DeskSaver 0.9-Give your Mac a stunning moving desktop

http://desksaver.en.softonic.com/mac

If you're bored of static desktop wallpapers then why not choose one that moves?

It might sound a bit weird but that's what DeskSaver does, creating some stunning closeups of natural objects and phenomena that look great on your desktop. Simply drag it to your applications folder and let it rip. The images will start appearing immediately and include close-ups of rain drops, particles plus a dose of psychedelic colors for good measure.

The images are certainly eye-catching, but it can be a bit off-putting with your desktop moving all the time. Frustratingly, there are no options or preferences either to give you control over what is displayed and the frequency of motion. There are supposed to be pause, resume and restart controls but CMD-clicking on the dock icon or accessing the DeskSaver menu reveals nothing.

DeskSaver is nevertheless more interesting than your average desktop background and features some stunning natural close-ups.

Download DeskSaver 0.9 in Softonic

There's nothing like a roaring fireplace. Of course, not all of us have a log fire but this Fireplace is the closest thing you'll get to one if you don't.

Fireplace is an impressive log fire simulator which fills your screen and offers the romantic feel of a fire but of course without the heat and the annoying cleaning up of cinders afterwards. If you've got dual screens, you can make one screen display Fireplace while the other you can use for work, leisure, video watching etc. The only thing you can alter is the crackle of the fire with a slider.

Fireplace is a very simple but soothing way to bring the aesthetics of a log fire into your home.

Download Fireplace 1.2 in Softonic

I was looking forward to installing this theme on my Mac and showing off its Leopard-like feel. Unfortunately, it felt more like a disappointment.

While you'll get the sleek semi-transparent menu bar, and the new Dock look, this last one feels a bit buggy and looks odd to me. Installing it is a bit of mess too.

You'll have to check access for assistive devices from Universal Access in System Preferences. Running the installer for Liger won't be enough to set it up though, as you'll also need to add themes, icon set and pictures.

Still, this is a great effort and a nice way to get Leopard on your Mac before anyone else. If you can't wait for the release of Apple's next operating system, it's well worth the pain of installing Liger onto your Mac.

Download Liger 1.6 Final in Softonic

iDock 4.2-Have as many Docks as you want

http://idock.en.softonic.com/mac

Do you want a different Dock for every day of the week? Do you get bored with the same Dock but don't want to mess around changing it? Or do you simply want to bring more order to your Dock?

If so, iDock could be your answer. iDock allows you to have as many docks as you want opening up a whole new world of organisational possibilities. For example, you could use iDock to sort your applications, stacks, downloads and more according to what you're working on or what you need.

iDock works via a simple switcher mechanism. Simply open iDock and click on either the "Change Dock" button or the "Go To Dock" button. If you choose "Change Dock" you can use the arrows to scroll through them. If you chose Go To Dock, type in the number of the dock that you want to go to and click Go To Dock. Dock changes take no more than a few seconds but you might find that sometimes your dock disappears. If this is the case, then you need only click "Help, My Dock's Gone!" and it will reappear.

iDock is a useful tool for anyone that needs more organization in their Dock although the likelihood of anyone needing more than 2 docks is questionable.

Download iDock 4.2 in Softonic

iLeopard 2.0.1-iTunes 7 theme for your Mac

http://ileopard.en.softonic.com/mac

iLeopard is a subtle theme that brings the iTunes 7 look to every corner of your Mac, from the Finder to folders and applications.

Once you've downloaded the package, take a few minutes to install it, making sure all applications are closed and restarting your Mac after the process. Although fairly discreet, you'll recognize the theme, particularly by the grey buttons, the selection menu or file paths. If you want, you can open up iTunes to find the similarities.

Because it's subtle, iLeopard fits in perfectly on your Mac. However, I did find it a little hard to notice at times if the theme was really there or not. I also found it a little difficult to uninstall. You'll have to dig into the downloaded package to find the uninstall file. This is the only way to remove the theme, as it is composed of a number of files you would have a hard time finding otherwise.

iLeopard is a discreet theme that brings iTunes 7 design to the whole of your Mac.

Download iLeopard 2.0.1 in Softonic

Somatic Rebirth System 1.0-80 new free icons to freshen up your Mac

http://somatic-rebirth-system.en.softonic.com/mac

If there was an award for weirdest name for an application then Somatic Rebirth System would surely be a contender. It sounds like some kind of medical breakthrough in birthing methods.

In actual fact, it's a whole new look for your Mac courtesy of an imaginative developer. Somatic Rebirth System features a collection of 80 freeware icons icons ranging from new folders, hard drives and discs to toolbar icons and much more. But it goes much beyond that because it comes complete with a new dock and other goodies.

For instance, those that use the developer's other application Candybar can also customize the appearance of your OS X Dock as well as the entire system folder with a single click. The problem is, the icons and redesign might not be to everyone's taste. I personally think Mac OS's default theme is much more elegant than the collection provided here although if you get easily bored with your desktop's appearance, I can understand the appeal.

Somatic Rebirth System is for all those that are bored of the look of Mac OS and want a complete redesign - not just a few icons.

Download Somatic Rebirth System 1.0 in Softonic
