iPod.iTunes 4.1 - Synchronize and transfer MP3s from your iPod to your iTunes

Unlike other iPod software to copy songs off the iPod, iPod.iTunes checks which tracks and playlists on the iPod are not in the iTunes music library and only adds those seamlessly to the iTunes library, avoiding duplicates, saving your time. Beside playlists, iPod.iTunes can also transfer song dependend data like "My Rating", "Last Played", "Play Count", album artwork, etc...

Simple one click synchronization (Screenshot)

Option to choose tracks manually if you don't want to synchronize them all. You can listen to tracks before you choose to transfer them.

Tracks and playlist entries can be synchronized together or separately. If the tracks on the iPod are already in the iTunes library and you only want the iPod playlists, you can use the playlist synchronization alone.

With every track synchronization iPod.iTunes creates a date&time stamped playlist in iTunes containing the tracks which were transferred. This gives the option to easily add those tracks to existing playlists or to create new playlists from the transferred tracks.

Support for the iPod's "On The Go" playlist.

Copies by default seamlessly to the iTunes music folder and creates a folder structure based on artist/album, as in iTunes (with options).

File naming based on track number and track name, as in iTunes.

File formats: MP3, AAC/MP4, Protected AAC (iTunes Music Store), Audible audio books, Podcasts, Apple Lossless.

Support for Windows-formatted iPods.

iPod.iTunes can run directly from the iPod, so it's always there when you need it.

Registration is independent of the computer. You can just connect your iPod to any Mac without registering every machine.

iPod.iTunes can be used to:

Keep music and playlists on different Macs up to date

Do a full restore of tracks and playlists - i.e. after a hard disk failure or if you buy a new Mac

Revert accident deletion of tracks and/or playlists in iTunes, if these are still on your iPod

Clone an iPod

Transfer an entire music library from one Mac to another via the iPod

When transferring files to and from your iPod or iPhone, iTunes is generally the application of choice, as it's where all your media is stored and the interface makes it easy to work with your devices.

Xilisoft iPod Rip aims to be the intermediary between iTunes and the mobile devices in a simple interface, which basic users will enjoy. As soon as you start up the program, all you need to do is connect your iPhone or iPod. You can then choose whether to add files to your device, export files or send them directly to iTunes. Everything is carried out via the program's interface and is very easy for anyone to work with.

Obviously the process can take a bit of time if you are trying to transfer large amounts of files. During that time, it's best to avoid using iTunes and go off and do something else until the whole process is finished.

Xilisoft iPod Rip provides is an easy step-b- step way of transferring files to and from your iPod or iPhone. Recommended for basic users.

You'll probably think: oh no, yet another iTunes desktop player! It's true that the Mac nowhere short of this type of application, with each one more or less resembling the other. So what would make you go for X-Tunes.

For one, the interface is fairly sleek and discreet. It's unobtrusive and easy bring up thanks to a key combination. You can also tweak the opacity and fading delay. I also like the fact that it is only a preference pane item, so you have a proper menu from where you can adjust the setitngs. It's a shame that unlike many other iTunes desktop player, this one doesn't appear in your menu bar.

Although the player is fairly basic and will show only the typical play buttons, the fact that it's GPL means that adventurous programmers out there can play around with it and create something a little more original.

Still, X-Tunes remains an unobtrusive desktop player for iTunes with good keyboard controls.

OnDeck 1.9.4 - Show your iTunes

Judging from all the third party programs that let you show your iTunes track info on your desktop it seems this is the only feature missing from Apple's media player.

OnDeck, another such program, displays your track info and album art in a dark semi transparent window, which can be resized. If you have Growl installed, OnDeck can notify you via a mini pop up every time a new track is being played.

If you feel like sharing your listening habits online you can publish them to the web, either via FTP or by using Audioscrobbler. This option is much more easy to adjust than the display settings, which we found rather unintuitive. Theoretically you could customize what information shows up in the OnDeck window, however the app doesn't provide you with the elements to select (like album, artist, rating...). If you want to customize the info display you'll have to more or less guess what you want to show.

This and the fact that the app has been discontinued for a while now, do not make it the most attractive iTunes info displayer. We suggest trying out CoverSutra instead.

YamiPod 1.7 - iPod manager which can import lyrics

Sometimes, the most popular apps are not always the best choice. For instance iTunes, which may be too big a download for someone who just wants to manage the songs stored in their iPod. If this is your case, take a look at this little app.

Its name is Yamipod, an acronym that summarizes this program’s main function perfectly well: Yet Another Manager for iPod. That’s it. Without even needing to install it on your system, Yamipod will take care of your iPod content management, providing you with a clean interface and simple, easy-to-use tools.

Once you copy the program to your PC, you can run it straight away, although it won’t really work until you plug in your iPod. Yamipod will then scan its contents and list all your MP3 folders and files on its interface. Also, the program does not launch automatically when you connect the iPod to your PC, which may be a nuisance for some but certainly a relief for others. I prefer to take control over when and why my software starts up.

Yamipod’s simple interface displays a list with all the songs stored in the iPod and allows you to perform different managing tasks. For instance, you can browse through your music by artist or album, check the playlists you’ve created or view extended information about each song. You can even listen to music with the built-in player. However, we should note that we had some problems testing this as the player didn’t seem to work properly.

Perhaps the most interesting function is the possibility to copy both MP3 and AAC files to and from the iPod, which makes it very easy to update your music library. If you want to copy music to your PC from the iPod, select the songs and click on the “Copy song to...” option in the context menu. To copy them back to the iPod, just drag and drop the files from the Windows Explorer onto the program’s interface.

Finally, another very interesting tool is the “Remove duplicates” utility. No matter how careful you are, you’ll end up having duplicate songs in your iPod, especially if it’s a large one. Yamipod will find them by comparing ID tag data and file sizes, showing a list of possible candidates before actually deleting them.

Yamipod is certainly no serious competition for iTunes but still, it’s a very interesting option for those of us who own an iPod and need a simple, neat and easy-to-use file manager.

Have a DVD that you'd like to enjoy on your iPod? Don't worry you can easily extract the video and have it encoded to an iPod-friendly format in no time.

Xilisoft DVD to iPod Converter is an easy to use program, with a very simple interface which will allow you to rip your DVD and convert the video to the best format for your type of iPod.

The application offers two modes, general and advance. In general, thanks to three drop down menus you can quickly choose what iPod model to prepare your video for, the video and audio rate. As you will see, the majority of these are in MP4. We were a little bit disappointed with the advance mode, which lets you enter your own setting, however lacks any sort of choice. Similarly, it's nice to have a preview, but the one in the application is simply to small to really serve any purpose.

Xilisoft DVD to iPod Converter takes a little bit of time to install and you will have to choose between PPC and Intel versions, as the application is not universal.

Despite some limitations, Xilisoft DVD to iPod Converter is a good program to quickly rip a DVD and convert the video to the best format for your type of iPod.

One of the functions I tend to overlook when using iTunes is star rating songs. I think I really should though, because it really helps when creating smart playlists or looking for songs.

Funes is a little menu bar item, which lets you add star rating in seconds. When a song is playing in iTunes just click on the Funes icon in the menu bar, then select the number of stars you want to give it. Easy as that.

Funes is still in development and you could encounter some issues with it, although we personally didn't when testing it. It takes up little space and is a nice application to have if your menu bar is not too crowded and if like me, you tend to forget to rate songs in iTunes.

Although it's basic limited to one task, giving a star rating to iTunes tracks, Funes is a handy little menu bar item. Give it a try and finally get all your iTunes songs rated.

Misu is what you need if you're tired of having to open up iTunes to exchange music between two iPods.

The nifty little program allows two iPods to connect to each other and merges their music collections. Any song that you don't have from the other iPod will be added to yours. The program is also very easy to use. Connect both iPods via the USB entries in your Mac, launch Misu, press 'Transfer', and let it take care of the rest. The process can take a little while if your exchanging a large number of tracks.

Obviously it would have been nice to be able to browse through the other iPod's library and select only the songs you wish to transfer, but it's still not a bad thing being able to exchange music in one go. The application is also fairly stable and requires little knowledge to run.

iSquint 1.5.2 - Convert videos to iPod or PSP

Here is the thing: you just got a new iPod and you want to watch some videos on it. You can transfer video podcasts or buy videos from the iTunes store. You can also use a tool like iSquint to convert any video you have to play on your iPod.

The small and modest application actually works quite well. You can choose to optimize for TV or iPod and use H.264 encoding for better quality. One of the most handy features is actually being able to add your converted videos to iTunes, making converting and transferring to your iPod a linear process. Most users will probably use the slider to set image quality, however brasher users will dig in the advanced features, which allow you to crop your video, set framerate, bitrate, width and height.

The thing I really hate about iSquint though is the nag screens encouraging you to switch to the developer's other shareware solution VisualHub. You'll be notified every time you launch iSquint and every time you finish a conversion, and naturally there's no way of getting rid of it. The other major drawback is the volatile audio quality when it comes down to conversion. You might need a few tries before you get a video with proper image and audio quality.

Overall though, iSquint is a good free tool to quickly convert videos to the iPod format and save them in your iTunes library.

iPod Access Photo 1.3 - Transfer photos from your iPod to your Mac

iPod Access Photo will allow you to transfer photos from your iPod onto your Mac.

Whatever type of iPod you might be using, whether it be Classic, Video, Nano or Touch, the application will handle it. The latest version even works with the iPhone. iPod Access Photo reads the ithmb thumbnail files stored on your iPod making it much easier to browse through pictures and select the ones you want.

You can browse photos by albums and the application includes a preview window for you to check your snaps. iPod Access Photo lets you transfer photos one by one or you can simply check all the pictures you want and batch import them at once. iPod Access Photo also thankfully allows you to override photo names and set the ones you want.

The only downside is probably the jpeg save quality slide bar found in preferences. This tool feels a bit imprecise to work properly. However, most of the times, you probably will prefer not to touch the quality of your photos.

iPod Access Photo is a very useful tool to browse through photos on your iPod or iPhone and transfer them to your Mac.

iPod Access 4.1.1 - Copy songs from your iPod back to your iBook

Unlike almost all the other iPod applications on the market today iPod Access utilizes the iPods internal database to display song information. By using the database song listings can be displayed instantly, playlist data can be viewed, and songs purchased from the iTunes Music Store can be displayed properly. Most other applications must fetch song data from each song individually, making them extremely slow and incompatible with file formats other than regular MP3s.

ScrobblePod 0.47.1 - Scrobble your music on your iPod

I've personally been addicted to last.fm since it was launched on the net and like how easy it is to discover new music and similar artists. Usually I let last.fm scrobble my iTunes to let other users know what I'm listening. The scrobble feature in last.fm is pretty straightforward but somewhat limited. For one, it doesn't work with an iPod.

Scrobblepod is the first application I've come across that offers extensive scrobbling features. It scrobbles your iTunes library, last.fm and your iPod if you connect it to your Mac. I like how it's easily accesible from the menu bar. It can automatically disable scrobbling of iTunes if you've been inactive for a few minutes. Scrobblepod also lets you connect to last.fm by entering your username and password. This feature did not work correctly when we tested it and we could not connect. Let's hope that once Scrobblepod is out of beta this will be fixed.

Overall, Scrobblepod is a complete application for any scrobbling last.fm addict.
