With IKEA Home Planner you can plan furniture distribution on your new home before actually moving into it, or redecorate any room in your house with your favorite pieces of IKEA furniture. The program doesn't include the complete IKEA catalog, but it helps you get an idea of how the new decoration will look like – without having to move heavy tables and shelves around.

IKEA Home Planner is very easy to use. You can switch between top perspective or a 3D render view, and also build the room itself (walls, doors, windows, etc.) before starting to add furniture. Plus, the program shows highly-detailed information about each item you add, including measurements, and all available colors. One big drawback, however, is the fact that the program doesn't include furniture for the living room.

Once you're done with the decoration, IKEA Home Planner also lets you calculate the final price so that you can manage your budget more effectively.

Purchasing an iPhone is a big financial decision for some. Make sure you like what's inside the tin by trying it out on your Windows PC first with iPhone Simulator.

This small program is written in Flash and lets you interact with a virtual iPhone on your desktop. In some ways, it is quite similar to the popular iPad emulator, iPadian. You can play around with the interface, as well as try out default applications that come standard in the iPhone.

With great quality graphics, this app lets you test some of the iPhone's popular feature. With iPhone Simulator, it's possible to access the clock, calculator, notepad and iOS system preferences. The wallpaper can also be modified. While iPhone Simulator looks like it's using iOS, it's important to note that this is a flash application and cannot adequately simulate the entire experience of an iOS device.

Unfortunately, some key applications on the phone are not activated. This includes the popular Safari browser. iPhone Simulator is also modeled after the third generation iPhone so anything new that came out in iPhone 4 can't be tested here.

iPhone Simulator is a handy utility if you want to get an idea of what it's like to own an iPhone. Unfortunately, the features you can test remain limited.

Whether you’ve bought an electric guitar, acoustic guitar or bass, Guitar and Bass includes everything you need to start playing the instrument right away: a library of chords and a chord builder, intervals, scales and keys, together with some extra tools such as a metronome and a key finder. Guitar Bass also includes a set of exercises to put your knowledge to test.

The interface in Guitar and Bass is somewhat bittersweet: on one hand, it's fully customizable and includes a guitar fret where you can play notes, practice chords and compose your own tablature music. On the other hand, each tool in Guitar and Bass opens up in a new window, which makes it uncomfortable to use – not to mention the big banner that takes up some interface space.

Despite these minor flaws, Guitar and Bass is still an excellent companion for all guitar and bass newbies. If only it came with a few basic songs to start playing right away, it would be perfect!

Edison is a small tool that features different customizable power schemes with which you can save energy by automatically switching off the monitor, the hard drive and the whole computer after a certain period of time. You can specify the time limit for each one of these elements and also create different schemes, one for your working hours and one to be used when you're not using the PC.

In a way Edison is similar to the default Windows power-saving options you can find in the Display Properties menu, though it's easier to use and offers more possibilities for customization. In fact, the program does change Windows power settings when you run it, so even if your close Edison your PC will switch off if you scheduled it for power off at a given time – which I found annoying, chiefly because Edison didn't warn me about it.

Another negative point about the program is that it requires you to create a free user account on the developer's page. Man, I'm just trying to save some money and energy here, what do you need my name and email address for?

With Edison you can configure your PC to switch off certain system elements, thus saving energy and money.

Sending personalized cards through the mail can be expensive and time consuming. Personal eCards helps create and send personalized cards for a number of different occasions. You can import your own photos, choose a design, and edit text for your custom cards. After you're done you can save, email or share your creation on Facebook and Twitter.

The interface of Personal eCards is very snappy and allows drag and drop importing of photos. There aren't many options, however, and the card design selection is very limited. The designs that are available, meanwhile, are decent but bland. There are no options to adjust anything other than your picture and text, which is a bummer. It would have been nice to at least rotate a photo for some fun angles.

Overall, Personal eCards is a very basic card creation program but it works well. We just wish there were more personalization options and card designs.

Local Cooling displays the amount of power used by the computer, monitor, hard drive and other peripherals on its window. You can then configure it to shutdown the monitor, spin down disks or even hibernate the computer after a certain period of time.

After using the program for some days, you'll be able to see, in terms of trees and fuel gallons, how much energy you have saved. You can also register in the author's website and compete against other users.

In all, a nice tool with a more than laudable aim, but still we missed some configuration options like the possibility to change measurement units.

Although the Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact interface isn't the most attractive, it features a sensible layout and easy drag & drop interaction. You pick your background (or a blank page) and add elements from the bars on the left. You can then move, color, edit and modify the elements as much as you like until your scrapbook is shaping up just the way you like it.

The Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact has quite advanced editing options, many of which will be familiar if you have used programs such as PhotoShop. You can tweak position, transparency, layers and more, but if you aren't used to the concepts, don't worry - Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact has extensive help, tutorials and tooltips that can help you on your way.

The scrap elements available to Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact users are a combination of your own material (as images) and pre-designed objects available from the DaisyTrail.com website. Some of these are free, but the vast majority must be purchased. Although adding content is easy, we found that manipulating it once it was on the page was a little harder.

Digital Scrapbook Artist Compact is a great free application to take your first steps in the more graphic side of scrapbooking.

Garfield Comic Reader is a simple tool that downloads a daily Garfield strip to your computer. You only have to run the application – no installation required – and the program will automatically display the corresponding strip on your desktop.

Garfield Comic Reader also lets you save the strip to your hard drive, though only in GIF format. The only thing you can't do is review strips from past days, meaning that if you miss the strip one day, you won't be able to recover it.

The trick to avoid this is copying Garfield Comic Reader's executable file to the Windows Startup folder and therefore having it running automatically for you. In this way you won't miss a single strip and you'll start your day with a smile.
