Shoo Apps 1.0.1 - Hide inactive applications

The little Shoo Apps program aims to hide inactive applications from your screen. It works via a little cursor, which you drag to set the number of seconds until the unused program is hidden.

From the somewhat unfinished interface, you can find a pre-established choice of apps to hide, from General, basically everything, to the Finder or Firefox bin. Obviously Shoo Apps will only show applications that are opened and you will have to decide which ones to hide.

The cursor itself felt somewhat imprecise. Even though you could set the time from a few seconds to minutes, I had trouble getting the exact time I wanted. The arrows on the right were similarly unintuitive to use.

To give Shoo Apps some credit, it will clear up your screen if you have a lot of applications open. However do not count on it for freeing up some memory for you.

Shoo Apps still needs a bit more finishing to make it a useful application.

HoudahSpot 2.2.2 - Multiply the power of Spotlight

HoudahSpot is a file search tool based on Apple's Spotlight technology. It enables users to quickly create and store powerful search queries. HoudahSpot has been designed from the ground up with ease of use and convenience in mind. You will feel right at home. We feel it is not the user who needs to be educated, but the software that should be made to the user's need.

With HoudahSpot you may search by name, contents, date, type or any other file attribute. It all starts with a basic query form. Take it from there to pinpoint the files you are looking for. Create complex queries by combining criteria using boolean operators.

HoudahSpot leverages Apple's powerful and fast Spotlight engine. It does not waste this engine's horsepower to run searches before you are done entering criteria. The search starts only at your command.

Search results remain up-to-date as long as they are on screen. Create a new file and it instantly shows up in the searches that match it. The top half of the query window allows you to express search criteria. The bottom half defines the search scope. The top half of the results window lists the file matching your query. This list may be sorted at wish. The action menu enables you to open files, reveal them in the Finder, move them or trash them.

In the bottom half you will find a column based file browser. The left-most column shows the siblings of the currently selected search result. To the far right is a larger view of the currently selected file.

HoudahSpot may be configured to start up as soon as you log in to your Mac. It is then ready to jump to your service at the press of a simple key stroke. You may save your queries for later reference. A query set up with a few basic criteria and a search scope might serve as a starting point for future searches.

Saved searches are much like smart folders. When saving a search its run state and result sort order are saved along with the query. A search saved while running jumps back to life as soon as it is opened. HoudahSpot comes with 2 such predefined searches: 'Applications' and 'Recent Documents'.

Queries saved to the template directory always are readily accessible from the 'Template' menu. You may assign keyboard shortcuts to up to ten templates. Templates may be used as stationeries or as smart folders.

iHook 1.1.0 - A frontend for commandline executables

iHook is a graphical frontend for any commandline executable. It gives scripts a pleasant Aqua face, and allows script writers to provide graphical feedback without having to learn one of the higher APIs available for Mac OS X.

iHook accomplishes this through its ability to understand a set of directives. When a script writes an iHook Directive to stdout, iHook will modify its own interface based on the content of the Directive. A simple shell script can have an Aqua interface, complete with a progress bar and drawer.

When launched in the Finder, iHook prompts the user to choose a script to run; iHook also accepts file drops on its icon, and will attempt to run the dropped file. iHook is also highly useful as an interface for Mac OS X LogoutHooks.

Advanced users know and trust Onyx, the maintenance and optimization tool for Mac. Deeper, created by the same developer is like a lighter version of Onyx, essentially offering up all the customization options. The interface is divided into all the main sections that Deeper allows you to customize. You'll be able to fiddle around with the Finder graphical effects like zooming and set horizontal and vertical spacing. Deeper also lets you choose what items you wish to show in the Finder menu.

We also liked choosing how many history items appear in Safari or setting it to automatically open up PDFs in the browser. Another handy setting is automatically disabling the cache. In login settings, you'll be able to choose what users appear and whether to disable elements like Restart or Logout. Deeper can also show the Debug Menu for pretty much all of your Mac features like Spotlight, your Address Book or Terminal.

While for some sections Onyx lets you adjust a good deal of settings, for others it's surprisingly limited. The browser, for one, is limited to Safari. Similarly, settings for Dashboard and Expose don't really offer anything special.

If you don't already have Onyx, Deeper is a good app to have to fiddle around with your Mac's hidden functions.

TheAdmin 1.0 b23 - The easiest way to manage accounts on OSX

As the administrator of a Mac with multiple users, you want to make sure that each of them has access to preferences and items that they need, and that the right applications are set up. You could do it one by one, or you could work with TheAdmin.

This tool, although still in Beta, so a little unstable and still lacking in features, should make your life much easier. Select the accounts to act upon from the left side menu, or simply choose to select all from the drop down pane at the bottom, then select the applications and files to install and drop them into the table view at the top. Removing is just a case of selecting an application and pressing backspace.

Using TheAdmin, only the applications you choose will appear in a user's Dock, and you can set it differently for every user, changing the order or which ones appear.

Obviously it would be nice to see control over more settings like security or sharing preferences. Let's keep in mind that TheAdmin is still in Beta though and should hopefully have new features later on.

PreferenceCommander 2.3.3 - Control your preferences

PreferenceCommander allows you to tweak individual preferences for each of your applications.

As soon as you start up the program, it will scan your Mac for all the preferences files for each and everyone of your applications. This can take a bit of time if you have a lot of programs on your Mac so try to be patient. Once the process is finished you'll be able to scan through pref files for each application, just by selecting the app in the list on the left side. You can also use the search box.

PreferenceCommander displays preferences text files, which can be a little disconcerting for first time users. We recommend paying more attention to the saved preference sets at the top of the interface. You can quickly add or remove them one by one thanks to the plus and minus buttons. They also give you a much clearer idea of key preferences saved for each application.

PreferenceCommander will cater to people who want to quickly tweak the preferences of their applications. You can always do this one by one, by opening up preferences in each program, but this naturally takes more time. PreferenceCommander saves you the hassle and at the same time gives you a quick overview of all applications.

Despite an unappealing preference text file view, PreferenceCommander offers a quick way of quickly viewing and editing preferences in your Mac applications.

MsgFiler is a little Apple Mail plugin to quickly file your emails into different folders.

The plugin is easy to install and accessible from your menu bar. All you need to do is select the emails you want to move, press Command - 9 and then type in the name of the folder you want to drop the messages in. You can also select "move with MsgFiler" from the Message tab in the Mail menu bar.

The standout feature of the plugin is selecting the folder into which you'll drop your mails. Not only can you choose multiple messages but also, thanks to find as you type you can quickly find the most adequate folder for your emails. Also click "Show" in the MsgFiler window to quickly open up the selected mail folder.

On the downside, users will claim that emails can still be quickly organized in different folders in Apple Mail, either via good ol' drag and drop or by setting up solid rules to start with. MsgFiler gives you another alternative.

Even though it's not absolutely essential, MsgFiler is a good Apple Mail plugin to quickly store your emails into folders.

Sometimes it doesn't get better than this. Service Scrubber is an extremely well thought out tool to manage your services menu. On startup, the program only takes a few seconds to load up a list of your services. If you want to unselect one of them, all you have to do is uncheck it from the list. By clicking on the little "i" icon you can edit information for the service and even add a keyboard shortcut. And if you have trouble spotting a service (or if you're really too lazy to use Spotlight :P ) click on the path at the bottom of Service Scrubber's interface to open it up in a new Finder window.

Service Scrubber makes your services menu accessible and configurable in seconds. You can click the reload button on the top right of the interface to bring your changes into account. Just make sure that you know the password for your Administrator account to be able to validate your modifications.

Service Scrubber lets you update your services menu in seconds.

The Dashboard allows you to use mini applications called widgets. These widgets allow you to see information such as the date and time, or the running value of stocks that the user can setup. They also can be games or just about anything that developers can come up with. The Dashboard makes it very handy to easily access these widgets and the type of data or information that the user wants to look at. There are literally thousands of these widgets that have been developed and can be downloaded from various sites. The problem with the Dashboard is that the number of widgets that can viewed on the screen at one time is limited to the amount of viewable screen space that the user has.

To solve this, Virtual Dashboard was created. With Virtual Dashboard, users can create widget sets that can be switched in and out either through a menu or keyboard shortcuts. This allows users to create different sets and add or remove the widgets that they want to see. Virtual Dashboard allows the user to create as many sets as they desire. Users could literally have access to hundreds, if not thousands of widgets right at their fingertips.

Application Wizard lets you control your applications from one place.

The program allows you to open, close and switch from applications in seconds. You can also browse through all of them via Application Wizard's expandable menu view. The program lets you create and open groups of applications, depending on your needs, and find frequently used apps. You'll be able to set behaviors for applications, like if they open up at startup or for background-only applications to quit.

The transparent interface is unobtrusive and actually quite elegant on your Mac and having all applications shown in a menu view puts everything in your reach. When closed, the application is still available as a little panel in your menu bar, which you can also set anywhere else on the screen. It did feel a bit unintuitive, as you do not know what each light corresponds to.

Application Wizard almost works as a replacement to your Dock and Finder, as it not only shows applications, files and drives but also available and used space. You can also preview files and images. Although some of these things you'll more or less get in Leopard, Application Wizard offers up a new way to browse through your Mac.

FacebookSync 2.2 - Sync your Address Book with FaceBook

FacebookSync was a really handy tool to pull out all sorts of personal information from your Facebook friends and sync that your Mac Address Book. Since FacebookSync was released though, time has passed and Facebook has been criticized for its handling of private data, forcing the social network to tighten security. This means that it's harder than ever for applications like Facebook Sync.

FacebookSync could take all sorts of information including name, numbers, emails, addresses and even photos. FacebookSync will still work but you will be much more limited in the information that you can access.

FacebookSync is easy to use: once launched and your Facebook account accessed, a pop up window for every one of your contact will appear and ask you whether you want to add the information to your Address Book. Obviously it can take a little while for FacebookSync to get around it all if you have a significant amount of friends.

Once synced, your friends will have been added and filed to your Address Book. Note that FacebookSync does not let you work the other way around.

Until Facebook changed its Terms of Use, it used to be very useful for syncing friends to your Address Book. Much more restricted now.

SharingMenu presents a menu in the menu bar with which you have instant access to some of your sharing preferences. You can view and change them very quickly at any time. It shows preferences that you also can find in the "Services" tab inside the "Sharing" preferences inside the "System Preferences" of Mac OS X. Besides, "Guest Access" as part of Personal File Sharing can be turned on and off with SharingMenu. The color of the icon in the menu bar signals if there are sharing services activated or not. Furthermore with SharingMenu you can open the "Sharing" and "Network" system preferences with one single click.

MacJanitor 1.3 - Run system tasks at the click of a button

MacJanitor is designed to be used on a periodic basis by Mac OS X users who don't leave their computer on (and awake) 24 hours a day. MacJanitor is provided as freeware as a service to laptop and energy-conscious home users.

The Unix subsystems on Mac OS X were originally written for machines that were typically never shut off. Mac OS X inherits this assumption in version 1.x, and has many system maintenance tasks that are scheduled to run between 3 am and 5 am. In addition, there are scripts designed to run weekly on weekends, and once a month in the middle of the night.

If these maintenance tasks are never run (such as on a laptop that is always shut off at night), many log files and system database will grow extremely large or fail to get backed up.

MacJanitor provides a way to run these system tasks at the click of a button. Laptop users could click the 'daily' button every morning (or every few days), or office workers could click the 'weekly' button on Mondays.

If you've been leaving your machine off at night without allowing the maintenance tasks to run for several weeks or more, the first time you run them using MacJanitor may take several minutes. Also, if your log files have grown extremely large and you are low on disk space, the tasks may have problems moving the files around and compressing them. After that, it typically takes less than a minute for each task.

The output of the task is displayed in the scrolling view in the bottom part of the window. If for some reason you feel the need, you may print the output of the system maintenance tasks (but why?...).

You can't really hurt anything by running the tasks more frequently than is intended, and they don't need to be run on a strict schedule. Just run them periodically when you get a free minute every few days or weeks.

Hopefully, this will be addressed in a future update of Mac OS X.
