BetterTouchTool allows you to customize many different types of gestures. On the Magic Mouse, these include pinch in/out (zoom), single finger tap left, single finger tap right, single finger tap, two finger tap, two finger click, two finger swipe (up/down/left/right), three finger tap, three finger click, three finger swipe (up/down/left/right) and 'TipTap' left/right.

On a Touchpad, it allows you to configure three finger swipes (up/down/left/right), three finger tap, four finger swipes (up/down/left/right), four finger taps and 'TipTap'. There is very little to fault with BetterTouchTool. It really brings your Magic Mouse or Touchpad to life and enables you to make significant savings in productivity in the way you use your mouse device. It's easy to use, highly customizable and best of all, completely free.

Keyboard And Mouse Recorder works via a small application window (which is a bit too small for regular use) and with a design which you normally find in Mac Classic applications. The good thing though is that it takes no installation as you can open and use it as soon as it's downloaded.

Keyboard And Mouse Recorder works simply by pressing the Record button then carrying out the action you want to show. This can be replayed using the play arrow. In the preferences, you can also time recordings to take place at set intervals. Annoyingly, however, videos can only be saved in a proprietary format created by the developer and it's not clear how you can convert this to something you can upload and share.

Keyboard And Mouse Recorder is certainly easy to use, but it is a bit too basic to be used for advanced recordings of mouse and keyboard movements. You may well be better off trying something like Keyboard Maestro.

The first thing I liked in Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor (TTTT) is that it holds your hand from the start. As soon as you launch the program a rough looking, yet friendly Viking greets you and will guide throughout the lessons. You can always rely on him if you have doubts or questions. The first exercises are meant to teach you how to place your hands correctly on the keyboard and how to type common letter associations. As you move on the difficulty rises and you are asked to type longer key words at a faster pace.

Where you need to reproduce a certain key combination a pair of virtual hands shows you how it’s done on the keyboard. Whenever you make a mistake the letters will appear in red and you will hear a beeping sound. You can check statistics to see with what keys you make the most mistakes. Not one to overlook a detail, TTTT even gives you tips on how to sit correctly in front of your PC so that you don’t tire too quickly. For the more experienced, you can also set your Words Per Minute count to see if you are typing on par with professional standards.

Once you feel more comfortable with your typing skills you can try them out in the two games provided by TTTT: Safari Park and Brick Factory. Both challenges give you a time limit to type certain key associations. You can adjust the speed to make it more difficult.

The Songseeker option blends iTunes to Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. This option can detect what song you’re playing and will download the lyrics if you click on the iTunes logo in the right hand corner. The program will display them and you’ll have to type in the correct characters. This is another way of learning how to type, and what’s more, you can enjoy your favorite song at the same time.

Depending on the language you’ve chosen when you installed TTTT, you can set the type of keyboard you are using. For example, English users will have a choice of UK, US and Dvorak keyboards.

If you don’t feel at ease with your typing skills, I strongly recommend using Ten Thumbs Typing Tutor. You’ll be able to learn at your own pace and will improve thanks to a multitude of exercises testing your hand placement, dexterity and speed.

Logitech Touch Mouse Server allows you to control a Mac with your iPhone or iPod Touch. The Logitech Touch Mouse Server sits in your Mac menu bar and provides status updates when your iPhone is and isn't connected. Just connect your iPhone to the server and it activates the phone as the main controller for your machine.

Note that you need to download the Logitech Touch Mouse App server for your iPhone or iPod touch from the Apple store first. When you run the Touch Mouse app on your iPhone or iPod touch, simply select the computer you want to control from the list that appears. The server icon will change to when your iPhone or iPod touch connects to the Touch Mouse Server.

It might seem pointless now but you never know when your iPhone or iPod Touch might be useful for controlling your Mac.

MagicPrefs is a toolbar application which significantly improves the functionality and configuration options of Magic Mouse. These include such things as the MagicMenu which gives you a holistic display of your Magic Mouse features plus the the ability to configure the middle click, hold down both mouse buttons plus access Spaces, Expose and the Dashboard.

You can even control the taps using MagicPrefs' Tap Sensitivity feature which allows you to use a slider to determine how hard you want to tap the Magic Mouse. Not only do they simplify your workflow, but they save time and can see you make substantial increases in productivity. Keyboard Maestro is a great tool for anyone new to creating keyboard shortcuts because it allows you to configure keys for just about any action. Keyboard Maestro creates what are known as 'macros' to trigger actions based on keyboard actions.

When you start the app, you'll see that many actions have already been configured for you, such as nudging the mouse cursor in a certain direction or switching to your previous application. However, creating your very own keyboard shortcuts is also fairly easy. Just click the '+' symbol to add a new one and click 'Record' at the bottom of the interface to get going. Keyboard Maestro will then record your actions to associate with the particular key or key combination you have configured.

This elegant yet discreet application is a great complement to a live presentation on your Mac. Once launched, it's easy to use it to highlight on your mouse, thanks to a small spot of light that will focus on it, or on your keystrokes, which appear in big characters at the bottom of your screen every time you type. Left and right mouse clicks will appear in different colors and you can also customize different sounds for different clicks.

Mouseposé includes a talkthrough tutorial, perfect for new users, which demonstrates all the features of the program with a voiceover. It only takes a few minutes and should give you a pretty good grasp of how it works and what it can do.

You can use both speech recognition and AppleScript with Mouseposé, however not all users will feel comfortable working with the latter.

Motype can enable you to create the kind of flashy text graphics that you see in the movies but at a fraction of the cost. It works with most major editing applications such as After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Motion and Final Cut Express. For instance, you can add special blurring, 3D, particle and shadow effects to your intro or outro text that simply isn't possible in most editing applications.

It takes quite a while to get used to because it's designed for those that know their way around complex editing packages, so you'll have to spend quite some time learning it before you get what you want. However, once mastered Motype, it's remarkably easy to shape text into the effects and styles that you want.

Motype could still do with a wider choice of effects to add to text, but if you're just looking for a few basic extra touches, you'll find it more than sufficient.

aTypeTrainer4Mac is a multilingual typing tutor designed specifically for Mac OS X. It features a huge range of keyboard layouts as well as even more obscure non-system keyboard layouts such as Dvorak, Colemak or custom layouts being built using Ukelele. aTypeTrainer4Mac will automatically detect your keyboard language or layout type although if you've got several installed in your Mac system preferences, you can switch between them within the program itself.

aTypeTrainer4Mac follows a simple format. All you have to do is type a mixed-string of random characters. There's nothing fun or imaginative about this - it's simply designed to drill into you the position of keys on the keyboard. As a result, it is rather boring but quite effective at getting you to remember where keys are. You have a metronome ticking away as you type although there doesn't seem to be any incentive other than to get to the end of the text.

If this is simply too boring to bear, you can customize your own character set or import text from the page your web browser is currently on as long as you are using Firefox, SeaMonkey or Opera. Alternatively, you can also import your own text document. There are 30 levels to choose from. You can test your ability to type either by Accuracy, Quantity or Quality.

aTypeTrainer4Mac isn't exactly the most sophisticated typing tutor out there but it should improve your typing skills if you persevere.

Fortunately, a mini cottage industry of Magic Mouse software is already developing to fill the gap left by Apple. If it's simply the slow speed of your Magic Mouse cursor that is annoying you, MouseZoom is a simple solution that speeds it up even if your Mac OS X native mouse speed slider is set at maximum.

MouseZoom installs as a preference pane and operates via a simple slider. Simply use the slider to set the speed you want. Although this isn't designed specifically for the Magic Mouse, it does work for it and of course, it works with a Mighty Mouse, Trackpads and other generic mouse devices. As you change the speed, you get some humorous ratings such as 'Uber fast!', 'Nice and Fast', 'Not Very Fast', etc. You'll find that the top setting in MouseZoom is unbelievably fast - I can't imagine why anyone would need a mouse at that speed.

If your mouse or Trackpad speed is dragging you down, MouseZoom will speed things up to the pace you need.

Like the Mighty Mouse however, the Magic Mouse can be a bit limited at times so expect a whole line of Magic Mouse software like MouseWizard to come along and extend its functionality. MouseWizard is a very simple utility which enhances the use of your Magic Mouse and allows you to customize it to increase your productivity.

The main advantage of MouseWizard is that it adds three extra buttons, namely, 'pinch', 'bloat', and 'tap to click' trackpad gestures. It also features a few special add-ons, such as 'coverup' to put your Mac into sleep mode. The main interface is very easy to use, allowing you to configure what type of clicks do what such as configuring a middle-click for Exposé or a fourth click to open Spotlight etc. If you get stuck, a handy wizard takes you through the configuration process by telling you where to place your hands on the Magic Mouse.

The major benefit of MouseWizard is enabling you to have a middle mouse button which many people criticized when Magic Mouse was released. At the moment though, there is a known issue with the battery indicator not working with MacBooks, although the developer is looking into this.

MouseWizard is a well designed application that adds much needed functionality to the Magic Mouse.

Especially if you've recently switched to Mac from Windows, you may find this frustrating. KeyCue is a simple and very effective application which reveals all the available keyboard shortcuts available on your Mac. Just hold down the CMD key and the list of shortcuts will appear in the foreground in a few seconds. The window takes a few seconds to appear and sometimes I found it took a while to respond bit generally it responded fairly quickly.

Shortcuts are organized by category such as Dashboard and Dock, Spotlight and Front Row. Once you've used KeyCue a few times to find the shortcuts that you need, you'll soon know them off by heart. There are several options and preferences such as the theme and view style but there is a distinct lack of themes to choose from

KeyCue is a great tool to discover and learn all the keyboard shortcuts on your Mac especially for those who have recently switched from Windows.
