Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3

Along with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat is one of the all-time great fighting games. It was also probably the first 2D title to that succeeded in simulating a 3D experience. In the late 80s, the game seemed so realistic that people thought it was unsuitable for younger players. Looking at it now, surely you wouldn’t say it is ‘realistic’, but you can still say it’s really violent. The final attacks, called ‘fatality’ or ‘brutality,’ definitely fit into this back this up.

In the third version of Mortal Kombat, the 'Ultimate' one, you can choose between 24 characters, each with their own special moves. To configure the keys you’d like to use, go to the Options > Set Config > Controllers menu; at this point, choose '6btn Pad' in the Port1 line and click Define. Now press the keys you would like to use to jump, move right, left, punch and kick by following the directions you see at the bottom of the frame.

If you are brave enough to face the bloody characters of Ultimate MK3, give this faithful reproduction of the game a try and see how close you get to the cliff’s edge.

Download Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 in Softonic

In terms of originality, Teeworlds scores top marks. if you combined Hello Kitty with Kirby's Dreamland and Quake III, then you'd get somewhere close to the concept.

You can choose from 17 character designs and fight against one or more persons in the different scenarios available through LAN or the Internet. The latest release also incorporates "fair" player spawning, the ability to kick players, and a very cute welcome screen to encourage players to set their names and favorite settings before playing their first game. The game has quite a few similarities to the Worms series of games, with the big exception that Teeworlds is played in real-time, while Worms is turn based.

The game is played using both mouse and keyboard - A/D moves your "Tee" left and right, W/spacebar makes it jump, and the mouse is used to aim and fire. Right-clicking launches a grappling hook, which can be used to move around the map quickly, and also grab other players. The game is so far free-for-all only, but a Capture the flag mode seems to be in the works. The problem comes if you try to set up your own server to play against a friend though - it's immensely complicated but there is an FAQ to help you through.

Fun, action packed and easy to play - if only Teeworlds was easier to play against others over the net, it would be even better.

Download Teeworlds 0.4.2 in Softonic

You can use a range of martial arts in your struggle against the dark forces of the Stones Metin.

This classic role-playing game is based online with different classes based on various martial arts weapons. You can use swords, spears or bows and over time, your aim is to become the most powerful warrior in the Orient. Graphically, the game is steeped in Oriental symbols with some fantastic buildings and backdrops although it's the excellent soundtrack that sticks in the mind. The battle scenes are also pretty memorable as you take on warriors from other empires in your quest for dominance of the continent. You can switch between a mix of martial arts from what seems like kung fu to taikwando and karate.

If you like kung fu and martial arts games, then you'll love this - great graphics and a great soundtrack mix to make it a beat-em-up classic.

Download Metin2 20080205 in Softonic

It's story is a common one - you assume the role of a penguin tooled up with lots of weapons and must take on a mad scientist who has turned your feathered pals into brainless zombies. The game is very simple to handle and you'll only need to use four keys and your mouse in order to guide Pablo the penguin through the story.

However, the gameplay itself is far from straightforward and the sheer number of brainwashed penguins that come at you make the action very frantic. The graphics in the program are quite interesting as they combine the classic 2D stylings of platform games with 3D elements, making for a very unique gaming experience. What's more, TAGAP is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack.

Download TAGAP in Softonic

FireHawk PC 1.21

FireHawk is one of those unashamedly fun, silly games that are just perfect for mobile phones. It's a classic-style arcade shooter, in which you pilot an aircraft and destroy all enemies in your path. Your plane spits out bullets and bombs constantly, so no need to hit a 'fire' key. In fact, it's pretty difficult not to destroy your first few enemies and, at first, the game feels like it's a bit too easy. As things progress, however, the game gets harder and the bosses get nastier! In terms of graphics, FireHawk performs well, but not brilliantly. The game's sound effects are OK but the repetitive electronic soundtrack is pretty irritating. Luckily, the music and SFX volume can be changed separately.

Unfortunately, FireHawk doesn't translate very well to a Windows desktop. The gameplay is still undeniably fun and addictive but the graphics, sounds, controls and menus have had nothing changed in their move from smartphone to PC. In fact, the game menu still includes a setting for 'Vibrate' - not a feature you find on many computers. This is definitely an enjoyable game but we felt it could have been implemented better.

Download FireHawk PC 1.21 in Softonic

Chances are, you’ve probably played on several games created by the M.U.G.E.N graphics engine. 2D fighting classics such as Street Fighter and Paws of Fury were originally developed on it. Today, the M.U.G.E.N engine is enjoying something of a revival due to the great old-school cartoon style characters you can create with it. Note however, that this download is for the design engine and you’ll need to be familiar with DOS programming to use it. There is one game included simply called “M.U.G.E.N” although it’s only intended as a demo to show you what you can do with it.

M.U.G.E.N is essentially a DOS based 2D graphics design engine designed by Elecbyte (now defunct) and was originally released in 1999. It allows anyone to create characters, stages and other game objects through interpreted text files, graphics and sound compilations and it also supports various types of audio formats such as MP3, ADX, OGG and MIDI for sound effects. The engine is currently setup primarily for fighting game development but several other game types have been developed using it, including shoot-em-up’s and platform games.

The official Elecbyte website has disappeared meaning M.U.G.E.N is now hosted by a developer who has renamed it “WinMugen” which is basically a hybrid of the original engine designed to work with Windows. For those familiar with programming, there are full instructions about how to use the engine in several README files contained within the download.

If you’re nostalgic about the games you played in the arcade as a kid, and are willing to learn a bit of coding to create your own, this is exactly the tool you need.

Download M.U.G.E.N in Softonic

TMW uses 2D graphics and aims to create a large and diverse interactive world.

The Mana World somehow reminds us of Zelda, presenting us with an online multiplayer universe where you can become a hero. There's no linear plot so you can build your own history by making searches, creating deals between players, fighting and acquiring experience.

This new approach to fighting games caused a total revolution, which in turn gave place to many subsequent titles. A few Mortal Kombat fans decided to create a completely free version of this game using the M.U.G.E.N. gaming engine and including all the characters that have appeared along the Mortal Kombat series.

Mortal Kombat Project features more than 30 characters with all their special movements and the so called "Fatalities". However it's still in beta, so it has some bugs. Regarding graphics, the game includes Mortal Kombat III models, which are considered to be the best of the whole series before going 3D.

Download Mortal Kombat Project 4.1 Beta in Softonic

MythWar Online 1.0.48.34

Myth War Online is a fantasy-themed MMORPG based on the magical era. Four classes of species exist, the Human, the Centaur, the Mage and the Borg.

What is exceptional about this MMORPG is the way the graphics are rendered. Instead of the usual 3D graphics that we see now in many games, we are experiencing a wave of nostalgia from the beautiful hand-painted 2D graphics.

Combining the powerful visual element of the game along with solid game play is the ultimate elixir for creating a long lasting ultra playable multi-player game. The maps are huge and detailed and the game is so in-depth that individual characters can possess over 200 skill sets!

Apart from the usual fighting scenarios, players can also have the option to play political mind games to amass power or destroy their enemies. The vastness of this game will definitely thrill hardcore MMORPG gamers right now who have seem to hit the limit with current games.

ATB System

Usually, battles in online games are all real-time or turn-based. Myth War combines these both and uses the ATB fighting system, meaning: player's turns and moves are controlled differently by each other, the ATB system is active throughout the whole battle, depending on each player's statistics, turns are determined by it, thus players can actively change commands depending on the battle situation.

Making use of the Country / Kingdom system

A country/kingdom is the proof of strength and power in Myth War. Sustaining a country/kingdom requires supports from lots of players who are willing to sacrifice and play a role for the survival.

Master and Apprentice System

Myth War has a newbie helping system called the 'master and apprentice' system, higher level players are able to help newbies in exchange for gold and experience points. This is a system which benefits both parties involved.

Rumour System

There is a saying that goes "Once a lie is spoken by 100 people, it becomes a reality". In Myth War, players are able to make such a thing come true. Rumours are able to materialize to become the truth. It is a way to let players make a name for themselves and at the same time, get specific rewards.

Download MythWar Online 1.0.48.34 in Softonic

Dragon Ball Z MUGEN Edition 2

What do you get if you cross Manga animation with a blistering martial arts fighting game? Super Dragon Ball Z. This classic arcade fighting game is based on the retro MUGEN graphics engine and will appeal to anyone who likes Street Fighter or Double Dragon.

In the start menu, you’re presented with several different modes. Arcade means you go 1 on 1 against the computer; in VS mode you take on a friend; Team VS lets you play various team-up modes against a friend; Team Arcade means various team-up modes against the computer and Team Co-op allows you to beat the crap out of the computer tag-team style. Finally, Training allows you to work on your moves and Watch mode allows you to observe computer controlled characters beat the hell out of each other in various modes. There’s also an options menu where you can configure such things as the level of difficulty, time limit, sound features and controls.

The game lets you take on the role of of almost 30 characters. Highlights include Chibi Trunks, Future Trunks, Normal Trunks and Mr Boo. As one of these fighters, you take on a series of martial arts beasts in an effort to win battle points and collect dragon balls. If you choose to take on a friend in the “VS” mode, make sure you’ve either got two joysticks or at least one whilst the other plays on the keyboard. For beginners, I’d advise going straight into training mode where you can practice some special moves which range from a simple karate-chop to a “fist of death” hammer blow which involves pressing at least seven different keys at once. Remember those old Amiga and Atari games where a special move literally involved snapping the joystick and you’ll get the picture. You can also customise your own player although it’s mainly limited to changing the name and colours here and there.

The game itself works on the basis of battle points - the more you beat-up, the more you win. Points give you access to a “skill tree” which enables you to pimp-up your character and give him/her some new moves. Along the way, you also collect dragon balls and once you have collected 7, you can call forth the “dragon of Shenron” which grants you a wish. According to the developers, this can range from adding a new move to your character to creating an entirely new one. The gameplay is just like a classic arcade game thanks to the ever-popular MUGEN graphics engine. The sound is also excellent with some classic satisfying retro kicks and punch effects. On the downside, it can seem a bit limited and boring compared to fighting classics like Street Fighter or Tekken but for a game that’s only around 30 MB , it certainly packs a punch.

Be warned also that although the developers claim this game works on all Windows platforms, some forums report that users with anything above Windows 98 have experienced problems starting the game. More advice is available from the developers’ website. In summary, a must have for any retro fighting fan.

Download Dragon Ball Z MUGEN Edition 2 in Softonic

Brutal is a 2D fighting game similar to Street Fighter and Mortal Konbat but the gameplay is very distinctive. Each of the 12 martial-arts characters have their own strengths, weaknesses and abilities. The gameplay consists of 3 punch buttons and 3 kick buttons making for some furious action. Unlike a lot of other M.U.G.E.N. games which suffer from being glitchy, this game hits all the right notes.

The sound is also excellent and the announcer who presents all the bouts is quite a character.
You can play in either 2-player tag team format or 4 player battle mode to add some extra spice to yout fights.

Ragdoll Masters 3.0

Ragdoll Masters might sound like an unlikely name for a combat game but if you look at the alternatives it sounds a whole lot better than ‘Puppet Fighters’ or ‘Dolly Wars’. The idea is so simple it’s genius – two relatively hefty stick men, neither with any control over their limbs (as tends to be the case with stick men) must repeatedly bump in to each other while confined in an anti-gravity chamber from which there is no escape. Throw in a healthy portion of 'realistic' physics and things start to get really interesting.

Your control over the fighter is limited to up, down, left, and right. To kick or punch, you have to hurtle your ragdoll spinning through the air and hopefully land a perfectly placed big toe to the head of your opponent. As the fight progresses, you build points for combos and head blows, and you will notice the wrists of the fighters grow red. This redness becomes increasingly brighter until the losing ragdoll explodes in a shower of small balls.

The unique controls and game play of Ragdoll Masters make it extremely addictive although it is most likely the kind of game that you will return to time and time again when you have a few minutes to burn.

"Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars" is a sequel of "Cossacks: European Wars," the hit of 2000-2001. Developed on a new 3D engine, the game combines 2D graphics and the latest achievements in 3D technologies. Significant rework on the engine as well as a number of gameplay innovations allow for presenting the game on a new level. "Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars" answers to the latest technology advances and provides a chance to even hardcore RTS gamers to experience a brand new gameplay of historical battles played on the true-to-life scale, with tactics and strategy particularities of warring sides taken into account.

Napoleonic period brought "civilized" warfare, fighting in combat formations into being. The very principle is put into practice in Cossacks II gameplay. Generally speaking, formations play a decisive role on the battlefields whereas individual units are mostly ineffective. Players are given a chance to lead their armies to victory in epic battles with tens of thousands of units on the map. The new engine's ability to zoom in and soar upwards to get a bird's-eye view of the battle makes Cossacks II the most spectacular game about the Napoleonic era.

Download Cossacks II: Napoleonic Wars Demo in Softonic
