This version of Adobe Flash Player allows you to view Flash content on your Pocket PC.

Not having Flash installed in your browser is rather like not having an aerial attached to your TV. So many sites these days utlilize the Adobe technology to offer graphical-rich interactive content, and it would be a shame to miss out on this.

Adobe Flash Player is very easy to set up on your PDA. You just download the .cab file either directly to your device or sync it via ActiveSync. Once you've run the installer Flash Player will automatically be operational when you start Internet Explorer.

Unfortunately this version of Adobe Flash Player 7 doesn't support all content created in the very latest version of the authoring tool.

Nevertheless, Adobe Flash Player is still an essential addition to your Windows Mobile device.

MyMobiler lets you move files via drag-and-drop, control the system with a keyboard and mouse, copy documents from the Windows clipboard and capture your mobile screen with a built-in screenshot function.

In order to get My Mobiler to communicate with your desktop PC you'll need to install and ActiveSync. An icon will appear on your desktop to launch the free program, from where you can remotely control your mobile.

As soon as you start using your Pocket PC in this way with My Mobiler, you'll notice how much easier everything is when dragging and dropping files, and using the keyboard and the mouse to control your device. The connection works very well and we didn't notice any significant delay between performing an action on the PC and it appearing on the mobile display via My Mobiler.

It's a shame this kind of functionality isn't available as default in Windows Mobile so you can use it on the move because My Mobiler demonstrates how much easier the native Windows system is to operate.

When I was younger (in fact, it still applies now) I always wanted to have James Bond's Miss Moneypenny as my secretary. As I grow older, I realise this is becoming less and less likely to happen. However, I've just stumbled across a mobile app that will give me almost the next best thing.

Agendus is an excellent personal information manager designed to make you more you a more productive human being through your Pocket PC. The application combines the different standard applications such as address book, notepad, tasks and email, and supports data synchronization with Microsoft Outlook.

It's incredible to be able to manage and access so much information from one place, and it surprises me that Microsoft couldn't have come up with its own Agendus when it developed the Windows Mobile OS. The program centralises a huge range of tasks, including managing contacts, appointments, tasks, notes, SMS and emails.

There's a whole bunch of stuff you can do with this information using Agendus, such as displaying data in daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly views, grouping, editing and deleting. A powerful built-in full-text search ensures that whatever you need is always close at hand. Everything is very simple to synchronise too, using ActiveSync.

Thanks to an intuitive centralised interface and some slick integration with Outlook, this really is a product you can't afford to be without if you have a busy personal or professional life.

I think we'd all agree that the default Windows Mobile contacts book is a little primitive compared with those you'll see on other mobile platforms.

That's why it's a good idea to install a third party address book application onto your Pocket PC as soon as you get it out of the box. Inesoft proves to be one of the best options you'll encounter, offering a wonderful environment for storing and managing your contacts.

The sheer depth of this software is difficult to convey in a short review, but needless to say this is a very powerful utility. When you launch Inesoft Address Book you're presented with a gorgeous user interface comprising of an ABC keypad with quick access to contacts via a T9 system. Alternatively, there's a small search bar at the top, or you can view contacts by category. There's a colourful menu bar with History, Dialer and Favorites options.

You could probably spend all day exploring the program's menus, and it boasts settings for contact-specific ringtones, filtering options, beaming contacts, making appointments, and much more. What's more, the New Contact option lets you enter all manner of information about a person such as their email address, IM details, multiple phone numbers and family details.

If you want a comprehensive contacts manager for your Pocket PC you'll be hard-pressed to find anything better than Inesoft Address Book.

The virtual wallet market is popular with software developers. Nearly all PDA users make use of some sort of virtual wallet program to store their credit card numbers, email passwords or other personal data. eWallet, already regarded by most as the leader in its field has improved on its already excellent reputation with version 4, a feature packed virtual wallet application which is near perfect.

Whatever information you want to keep safe, eWallet is designed to help you entering and retrieving your data with the least hassle possible. Like most virtual wallet programs, it includes a range of categories to choose from as well as a ‘custom’ category option. However, because eWallet’s range of categories is so expansive (check out the ‘internet settings’ option with space for IP addresses, default gateways and more), you may find that you never even need to create a custom category.

When you create a new card (a card can represent an actual credit card or any other record), you’re immediately given a range of customisation options which exceed the offerings of other programs. Change the colour of your card, add a custom .ico icon file, or even a sound effect to make each entry unique and easily recognisable. Cards can be created in the main set of your data store or in unlimited levels of subcategories, offering a level of organisation which is simply unavailable in other applications.

eWallet’s level of security is also impressive. With frequent requests for your passcode, you can be sure that no one can simply pick up your PDA and gain access to your cards. eWallet offers 256-bit encryption where some of its competitors still don’t encrypt your data at all. It also offers you the option to set password hints on individual items, a handy and popular data-protection technique often employed on websites. With top level stability, eWallet can be relied on to stand up to the job, even if you use your virtual wallet application frequently.

As you may be able to tell, we were pretty happy with this version of eWallet! It has so few flaws that the biggest issue we had was with the non-alphabetic listing of icons in the card-editing screen – hardly a critical issue. Synchronisation via SyncPro is actually far better than using ActiveSync, given that it doesn’t need to upload/download the entire database each time it syncs: SyncPro is capable of only updating the latest changes you’ve made, saving you precious time.

eWallet performs its core role with simplicity and ease of use and then offers you a higher level of customisation than any of its competitors. It’s not only the best in its category but one of the few absolute ‘must have’ programs for Palm, Pocket PC and Windows Smartphones. With practically no negative points, it just can’t get a higher recommendation!

PhatWare have a history of finding a weak spot in Microsoft’s Pocket PC software, and developing a new application which not only fills the gap but adds new features you’ll never live without again. PhatNotes continues this fine tradition by improving Microsoft’s barely-there Notes support while also replacing Pocket Word in the process.

Notes are, to this reviewer at least, one of those functions you’d expect that your PDA could really handle: after all, how much use is a Pocket PC that can’t adequately handle note-taking tasks? However, Microsoft’s built in support for Notes is so prohibitively designed that many users find they use it once then forget all about it.

PhatNotes brings power and multi-functionality to Notes. PhatNotes allows you to set up multiple databases of notes, each with multiple categories, which sync automatically when you connect your Pocket PC to your main computer. This makes it easy to categorize and sort your notes in a simple and convenient manner. Or, if you choose, select and drag text from any drag’n’drop friendly application (Firefox, for example) straight into PhatNotes’ desktop application, and in seconds, it’s saved to your PDA. Similarly, PhatNotes supports Microsoft Word documents on its own. As far as we could discern, there were no key features missing from this support. Indeed, PhatNotes has arguably the better interface.

In its basic functions, PhatNotes is easy to use, quick and reliable, but in some more complex operations, we found it a little less intuitive. Synchronising attachments (image files, for example) seemed like a useful function to have. It would be nice to quickly and simply add a map or a photo to a note which you’re taking with you on the road.

While the documentation provided with PhatNotes helped us set up attachment syncing in minutes, the feature itself is somewhat lacking. Any file you wish to attach to a note must already be in the shared documents folder for your device on your desktop PC. In other words, it pretty much already needs to be on your handheld. With the leaps and bounds being made in storage these days, we think that the time has come for programs like PhatNotes to automatically handle this sort of task. A feature we’d like to see in the future is attaching any file on your desktop PC to a note, and PhatNotes automatically making a copy of that file in your sync folder. After all, surely the general idea here is automation, not making the user check whether a file is in some folder.

Another gripe, though with potentially less impact, is the process for deleting databases. It would seem obvious that if you wanted to delete a database, you could select it (either on the PDA or the desktop computer), select ‘delete’ from a context menu, confirm and that’s it. However, PhatNotes asks us to disconnect our Pocket PC, delete the database on both it and the desktop, and then reconnect. This ungainly process could easily be automated, if necessary with a special warning, or an option to leave the database on the pocket PC, desktop PC or neither.

It is what PhatNotes brings to the table though which should be remembered. Despite the trouble with attachments and databases (features which Microsoft hasn’t even tried to include), are tempered by a very simple and enjoyable user experience with the more basic of its features. This program offers lots now, and hints at more to come… just like the developer that created it.

There are times when you need to get a text message out to lots of people at once, and it can be oh-so irritating having to type the details several times and send it to umpteen different numbers. MoblMsg solves this problem in a flash.

MoblMsg is installed very quickly through your desktop PC via ActiveSync and leaves a very small footprint, so it won't put any kind of strain on your device's resources. The user interface is a little ugly though, and the buttons are clunky and irregular in size. Nevertheless, MobMsg makes it simple to create new groups and add recipients to these groups in the main window, using the arrow buttons. There are no options for editing contacts in MoblMsg, which I felt was a bit of a shame.

Once the groups are connected you can write a message and send it to everyone in the group with the click of a button. MoblMsg stores all of your sent messages so you can go back at any time and check what you've written and when.

There are definitely better designed groups SMS tools out there, but nevertheless MoblMsg does provide a simple and functional way of creating group messaging lists.

Most of us could do with a screen capture tool in our lives, as they allow you to record what's going on on your computer, making it easy to explain to friends, tech support guys or even to yourself in the future.

But what do you do if you want to snap what's happening on your Windows Mobile screen? Well, you simply install a program such as HauteCapture. Let me point out first that I don't tolerate lame puns in software names, but I'll forgive this one as the software proves to be pretty functional.

The app is a breeze to set up. You just need to install it on your PC and connect your device up using ActiveSync. HauteCapture then quickly detects the handset and installs some software components onto it.

Once the program is all linked up and running it's pretty easy to use. You simply hit the 'Capture' button and it will take a grab of whatever is on your mobile screen and display it in the main window. You can then commit this to your PC by choosing 'Save' from the toolbar.

I also liked the 'Live' mode in the program, which displays exactly what you're doing in Windows Mobile inside HauteCapture's main window, changing as you use your mobile. Again, you can record any screen by clicking 'Capture'. Your captures can then be viewed either in full-screen or thumbnail view.

Unfortunately that's about as far as HauteCapture goes. There are no editing features for cropping or polishing your grabs and the program settings are quite limited. In fact the only thing you can really change is the file format to save to, and even then, there are only four choices. What's more, I found the program ran a little slowly, especially in Live mode and this can quickly become annoying.

However, if you want a simple, no-nonsense way of capturing screens from your mobile, HauteCapture does the job effectively.

They say that a change is as good as a rest. I'm still not really sure if I agree with that but I do agree that altering some things in your life can be good for you.

Like your Pocket PC theme, for instance. . .

Some might say this is a shameless way for Mobiano to plug its themes, and they'd be right of course. However, given that the themes are all free and, on the whole, are of good quality, I can forgive the company.

All of the themes are organised into categories, such as Nature, Computing, People and Sci-Fi, though, bizarrely, there's no search functionality included.

Installing the themes onto your PPC is seamlessly easy. You just click 'Apply to device' and, providing you've connected your device via ActiveSync, the theme will instantly transform Windows Mobile.
