PDF-XChange Viewer is a free PDF editor/reader that allows you to view and edit PDFs, all from within an attractive and intuitive interface.

If there is something we have learned here at Softonic, it's that a good PDF creator is hard to find. They are either ugly, slow, lack functions or, more often, all three. Will PDF-XChange Viewer be any different?

PDF-XChange Viewer's editing options are also impressive. Although the free version doesn't allow you to create documents from scratch, it does let you edit extensively, with a few exceptions, mainly the ability to add or remove pages. Commenting, underlining, stamping, attaching files and creating text boxes are all easily done, and can be modified and removed in the click of a button.

There are also tooltips, so you know what you are doing before you click. This feature is very welcome, as the PDF-XChange Viewer help is not very good. Additional cool features include a snapshot tool, document preview when opening PDFs and a huge range of interface language options.

PDF-XChange Viewer is a great PDF editor that is streets ahead of its many rivals.

PDFs are the best way to distribute documents on the Net, particularly if you've scanned one. It's way better than sending a generic JPEG scan.

PDF Studio is easy to use, yet powerful enough to allow you a whole host of editing options that enable you to annotate and edit documents. You can use it with existing PDF documents, or directly using the tailor-made scan-to-PDF feature. Note that PDF Studio doesn't require Adobe Reader to work - it uses its own propriety reader, which isn't nearly as good but does the job.

Foxit Reader on the other hand is light and quick. The proof is in the pudding for starters - compare Foxit Reader's installation file of just 12MB against Acrobat's more than 320MB and you can see why it opens documents in a snap. The key is that Foxit Reader doesn't have all those annoying splash-up screens, endless credits lists and plugins.

Foxit Reader's interface been designed with ease of use in mind. You have several toolbars available, which you can show or hide at your will and which give you access to all the available utilities: zoom, text selection, image snapshot, search tool, rotation or full screen view, among others. There is a small ad in the upper right corner, but you can deactivate it by going to the View menu and deselecting the Advertisement option.

PDF files can be a real pain if you want to take information from them and don't have Adobe Reader. Able2Extract is an application designed to make it easy to deal with.

The main selling point of Able2Extract is that it's especially designed to extract to Microsoft Word and Excel files - and other formats - with as much formatting and tables etc. intact as possible.

This trial version of Able2Extract lets you convert up to three pages at a time to whatever format you choose. The interface is really nicely designed, and won't cause anyone problems. Converting files from PDF could hardly be easier. Highlight what you want to convert and click convert.

For text PDFs the conversion quality is generally fantastic; we didn't notice any errors. When dealing with things like charts and graphs, Able2Extract isn't quite as good, although it deals with tables well if you convert to Excel format.

One criticism of Able2Extract is that many browsers can now handle PDF files directly, and also allow you to highlight the content, so you can copy/paste into other applications. PDF files are not as inaccessible as they used to be. Nevertheless, Able2Extract does the job very quickly.

If you deal with PDF files a lot, this is one of the most effective tools for extracting that we've seen, although it is quite pricey.
