Long awaited by the Mac crowd, the beauty that is Pixelmator is finally out. This intuitive and sleek image editor can be seen as a slimmed down version of Photoshop. It integrates layers and filters perfectly and gives you all the essential tools of a good image editor: brushes, magic wand, objects, text, gradients and fills. The multi-windowed interface makes it very easy to edit. Every time you select a different tool, you'll notice that the "Tool" window at the bottom left will change to show the settings for that tool. Similarly, depending on the selected tool, the "brush" window on the right will offer different settings.

It's recommended that you have a Core Image supported graphics card when you use Pixelmator, and you'll understand why after experiencing the smooth transitions and flowing movements of the different elements of the application. The dark, slightly transparent look of the interface also sets it apart from other image editors.

Pixelmator is an excellent image editor in a gorgeous interface. It may not offer Photoshop shortcuts, nor all of the effects you can find in Adobe's image editing app, but Pixelmator looks great, is very intuitive and has pretty much all the effects and filters you'd need.

It seems that everyone is slowly starting to realise that the future of video broadcasting lies online rather than inside a television.

Following the success of Joost, Babelgum and VeohTV, Adobe decided to get in on the act with the release of the Adobe Media Player. The philosophy of the software giant is that if you use a browser to navigate web pages, why shouldn't you use one to view multimedia too?

The result is basically a version of Joost as seen through the eyes of Adobe. Now out of beta release, the app provides an interesting and immersive way of watching videos online. Navigation is very smooth and feels natural and there are a number of features and services that make it easier to eyeball TV more effectively. For instance, you can create a list of favorites, and keywords add ratings to Flash video, build playlists and use the Dashboard-style interface to check out the latest episodes of your top shows. You can also now subscribe to RSS feeds that tell you when new episodes are online.

Content is king though, of course, and version 1.1 of Adobe Media Player adds a lot more episodes and channels from a broad range of genres. At the time of writing, Adobe estimates that there are around 25,000 episodes available through its media player. Adobe has even partnered with Sony Pictures to offer some movies through the service, such as Jerry Maguire and Men in Black. I was also impressed by the speed and quality of the videos.

One of my main qualms with Adobe Media Player though, is that many of the episodes are not available outside the USA. Fine if you live there, of course, but for those of us in other lands it's so frustrating to see a show you want to watch only to discover it's not available (of course, you don't find this out until after an advert has played in the player).

Glossing over the unavailability of some programs and channels, Adobe Media Player is making all the right strides to becoming the best place to watch TV online.

There is nothing that annoys me more in Firefox when a PDF document tries to open and crashes the browser.

PDF Download prevents this problem ever arising by allowing you to control exactly how and when PDF files are opened or downloaded. Instead of opening PDF files "blind" which is currently the case, PDF Download lets you know exactly how big it is with options of whether to convert it, open it, download it or convert to HTML. PDF Download stops the annoying problem of PDF files taking ages to open - especially big ones. The PDF Download plugin usually presents you with 3 options unless you've instructed it to do the same thing by default all the time - convert the PDF to HTML, download the PDF or open the PDF in the browser. One bonus with PDF Download, that perhaps separates it from others, is that it's not just limited to Adobe Reader. It also works with Foxit Reader and other PDF readers although to be honest, if you're using Foxit, you won't find much use for PDF Download anyway as it opens PDF files much more smoothly than Adobe Reader.

PDF Download is an excellent PDF tool which will result in fewer Firefox crashes although not everytime as it still seems susceptible to crashes when opening PDF files in the browser.

I was a little disappointed that the interface only underwent slight cosmetic changes, but the biggest drawback of all to Dreamweaver in my opinion is still the price. Even though it's a powerful application, not everybody will be ready to pay $399 for it. You'll also have to make for sufficient disk space to accomodate the 1GB installer package.

Adobe Dreamweaver is a reference in terms of web designing, editing and creating and offers alot of help and guidance.

PTLens is an excellent application to correct or add distortion to your pictures.

You'll be able to apply a fish eye effect, modify perspective, chromatic aberation and vignetting. PTLens also lets you correct barrel-pincushion distortion on a wide range of camera models. It doesn't seem to allow you to add new models though. Adding effects is really easy thanks to sliders and you can immediately see the changes in the preview. You can also simply disable an effect you don't want by unselecting it.

The program's interface does feel a little clunky, and you wonder why the directory is on the right, instead of next to the preview. We appreciate that plugins for Photoshop and Aperture and an external editor for Adobe Lightroom come in the installer though, so you can also use it in your favorite photo editor. The plugins will work exactly as the standalone application.

Despite the slightly unintuitive interface, PTLens is an excellent tool for correcting image distortion. Recommended for any serious photographer!

Adobe Reader is the standard application needed for PDF viewing on your Macintosh. It has been in existence for over a decade now and has gone through various evolutions during this time. One result of this is that it has been increasingly loaded with plugins and extensions which mean that it's consistently criticised as being bloated and slow.

This is true to a certain extent although it still has much to offer. With this release, Adobe have addressed some of the speed issues and the memory footprint has been improved consistently throughout the development of version 8. The biggest problem with this program however is and continues to be security. It has too many features that most people do not need which not only slow it down but also leave it very vulnerable to attack. However, it does a very good job of allowing you to scroll through documents, jump to certain pages, copy text and print.

Adobe Reader is a well designed application that still performs effectively despite its size and will continue to be an essential application for producing documents.

Adobe's new cross-operating system runtime opens up much more possibilities to both developers and everyday computer users. It allows developers to create new web applications using HTML, XML, Javascript and Flex. What's more they aren't limited to using Adobe's library, but can create, share and use their own to create specific web applications.

For users, it gives access to new and exciting rich internet applications (RIA) which can be run straight from their desktop. These use very little memory, are usually quick to launch and execute and have very smooth animations. A quick visit to the Adobe Showcase Gallery and you get an idea of the sort of applications that are being developed for AIR: a Google Analytics Reporting Suite, a Twitter desktop client, a movie discovery tool and much, much more. The possibilities are endless and really depend on the creativity of developers.

While I've had some errors with AIR, especially when installing new apps, I'm overall very impressed with it. Quietly but surely, we're seeing more and more exciting web applications being developed. Install AIR to be part of the web applications revolution!

Taking from the original PulpMotion, PulpMotion Advanced brings more powerful tools to the table to create professional looking presentations.

Just like its older brother, the advanced version includes a wide range of excellent visual themes you can choose from to start working with. The interface itself is very easy to handle: creating your own animation is simply a case of dragging, dropping and arranging elements.

The advanced version now allows you to time every element precisely, setting the rhythm for your presentation. One limitation we did find is that you can only add one audio track to your slideshow.

You'll find PulpMotion Advanced gives access to media from much more applications, like Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture. Navigating through files in full screen is a bit of eye candy, but still enjoyable.

As with the standard version, PulpMotion Advanced really makes exporting a snap, with many presets for the iPhone, Apple TV, iDVD or iMovie.

As enjoyable as ever thanks to a beautifully designed interface, PulpMotion Advanced brings a bit more features to the table. You can't help but think then, why ever go back to the standard version?

To make sure you can view any Flash video online you'll have to check you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player installed.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this program does not offer a normal interface as you could expect. Once set up it will allow you to see normal Flash video or animation of Flash 9 or under in any website.

This application is extremely handy to extract objects from a SWF or simply to convert a SWF into FLA. The program offers both basic and advanced modes. When testing it we found it converts SWF files fairly quickly. The progress bar lets you know how far you've gone in the operation anyways. The advanced settings for converting include detecting motion tweens, actionscript, symbols, and you can specify what timeline, page or library elements you want to include.

In the extracting feature you can select specifically what sort of object you wish to obtain from the SWF, such as video, images or fonts. The application can convert them into FLA or a more native file type, like MP3 for sounds. The extracted files are all a saved in a well organized folder, with sub folders for each object type.

Obviously, there's always a risk of losing a few elements when converting or extracting from SWF to FLA. This program gets it right the majority of the time and the sleek interface divides both extracting and converting features well.

You can create sets and collections to store your pictures and add tags to every individual photo. The time line view at the bottom is a great way to quickly browse through pictures.

Editing tools are located on the right of the interface. The Quick Develop section works wonders to adjust things like white balance, exposure or vibrance quickly. For advanced editing you'll have to go to the 'Develop' section though. This is where you'll be able to correct details, camera calibration, split toning and more. Lightroom lets you create virtual copies so you can edit elements without affecting the original.

Adobe's photo management tool also includes a section to create your own slideshow, including transitions and overlays. Although it creates nice slideshows it felt a bit counterintuitive. We also liked how in-depth the print settings were, letting you adjust things like margins or print resolution very precisely. The last section allows you to optimize your photos for the web and create a flash gallery and a postcard viewer among others.

Ligthroom is still in Beta and you'll find it can occasionally slow down. On the whole though, it truly is a top of the range photo management tool. Serious photographers will find it makes working with thousands of images much easier. This Beta is good to test out new features although it can be a little unstable at times.

Thanks to an excellent structure, advanced editing tools and features to print, publish to web and create a slideshow, Adobe Photoshop Lightroom truly is one of the best photo management programs out there.

Knowing how to convert video files to Flash is almost necessary nowadays, as Adobe's video format is quickly becoming the dominant one on the net. Working as any other converter, Video2SWF has the advantage of outputting not only to swf but also to flv and html. It supports most of the video and audio formats out there, though we were disappointed to find out that audio mpeg was not handled.

Settings is probably where Video2SWF packs the most features. Not only can you select in and out points for your videos, but you can also add overlay, and a few filters. The program also has a choice of half a dozen different video controls to add to your video. If you work with multiple video files, you'll be glad to know that you can batch convert them.

Performance is where Video2SWF underachieves, with pretty slow conversion speeds. We were also surprised that the application is not yet Universal Binary and still only available to PPC users.

Video2SWF is a flash converter with lots of extra settings but a tad slow in the conversion process.

Apple's star photo editing and management software has just been updated to version 2.

Focused on performance, simplicity and imaging, this new release brings with it more than 100 new features, a fresher interface and a completely new processing engine, now putting it on par with Adobe's Lightroom.

Aperture can handle thousands of images, which it can be displayed in a number of views, quick preview being one of the best. It offers support for a wide range of digital RAW formats, with new ones being added to the update. Also, Apple have made the effort to make Aperture simpler to use for amateurs. Importing your images from any source, whether iPhoto, your camera, or any folder, is easy and you can watch a few great tutorials to learn all about the program.

Projects, Metadata and Adjustments have been joined into one single inspector and Heads Up Display (HUD). You can edit metadata, such as iso, exposure, tags, or aperture straight from a RAW file. Aperture will now even show your lens model. The adjustments tab is probably where you'll spend the most time though, especially if you're working with RAW. Use the sliders to play around with everything from white balance to exposure, colors, highlights & shadows or enhancements. Changes are instantly displayed onto your picture.

New editing features you'll find include highlight recovery, color vibrancy, local contrast definition, soft-edged retouching, vignetting and RAW fine-tuning. Aperture 2 now also includes support for tethered shooting, which allows you to connect a camera to your Mac via USB or Firewire and shoot directly into Aperture. We also enjoyed the Loupe tool, which lets you zoom in up to 1600%.

The most significant update has got to be the new plugin architecture though. This will allow anybody to create their own third party plugin for Aperture, so you can soon expect to see all sorts of cool effects and filters only for Aperture popping up.

Aperture allows you to save and export your edited snaps in a number of ways, from smart albums to web pages or your .Mac Web gallery, which you can then view from anywhere using your iPhone, iPod Touch or Apple TV. The library database has been redesigned and you can now easily switch between projects, even when working with a lot of images.

There's no doubt, Aperture is a real beauty and a pleasure to work with. It's fast, looks great and makes it easier than ever to enhance pictures. The only drawback is still the price though. Despite having dropped by a significant $100, at $200 it's still an expensive piece of software, especially for amateurs.

Fast, extremely well designed, and offering up a lot of advanced editing tools, Aperture is an excellent photo editing and management application. Another milestone here by Apple.

If you want to make a large print of a small photo, what you really need is a good zooming tool to enlarge your image whilst maintaining quality.

PhotoZoom uses its own S-Spline XL developed technology to perform the task. Fitted with simple yet powerful tools in a slightly bloated interface, the application gives you many ways to zoom in and change the size of your image. After you've opened a picture in PhotoZoom, you can rotate, flip and crop it until satisfied with its arrangement.

From the side menu on the left you can easily zoom in and browse onto your image thanks to the navigation box and set the size in different metric settings. However the more interesting features are the resize methods and new sizes. PhotoZoom offers 11 different resize methods including bi-cubic, bilinear and mitchell. You can also adjust image size to specific TV settings like NTSC or Pal, HDV or desktop for your computer. PhotoZoom even includes a very thorough list of print presets such as envelope, sheet or tabloid. These come in very handy if you know exactly what you want to use your image for.

Overall, we were satisfied with the application's performances. One little nag we had with it though was the slightly bloated interface, which you could have been better structured.

Despite the interface, PhotZoom is a good solution to resize any image to a specific format.

What you usually look for in a font manager is for it too be quick and able to manage large font libraries.

FontAgent Pro manages to do this well. The application includes both smart search and keyword search to easily find any font you're looking for. Fonts are well categorized and easy to find via the main window. We encourage you to create smart sets to also arrange them to your preferred order. You can quickly access the ones you want via smart activation.

In terms of performance, FontAgent does not seem to suffer any slow down even if you have a large library of more than a 1,000 fonts. FontAgent also include many handy tools to manage your fonts in batch. You can quickly clean up fonts and remove errors or even update them. The application also includes Adobe Photoshop CS3 support, so you can quickly upload your custom fonts to an image you're retouching.

FontAgent's strength, the interface, is also its weakness. While it's packed with a lot of very useful features it can be a little confusing to work with, especially for new users. You'll have to give yourself a little bit of time to get used to it. A lot of users have also complained at the lack of information from developers regarding new updates. Hopefully this will change in the future though.

FontAgent offers a lot of features to quickly manage large font libraries. While a little complex for new users, it comes in really handy once you get used to it.
